Dogmilk Films is a collective based between Naarm-Melbourne, Makassar Indonesia, and Paris, France. Founded in 2017, Dogmilk brings alternative and ambitious films to life on screen with impactful screenings of world cinema. In addition to their screenings, Dogmilk has also expanded into filmmaking, with their searing short film Faceless being a prime example of risk-tasking Australian cinema that actively pushes boundaries and questions the status quo of this nations history.Faceless is a piece of co-authored cinema, with co-directors William Jaka and Fraser Pemberton working alongside co-writer, producer and editor Chris C.F., cinematographer Alexandra Walton, composer Josh Peters, production designer Anna Ross, and many more all working together to critique, question, and examine the class system that lives on the Birrarung-Ga (the Yarra River). In the film, William plays an Indigenous man through three parallel realities; in one world he's on the banks of the Birrarung-Ga, encountering a rough sleeper who reveals himself to be a war veteran. Heading up the steps into an art gallery, William takes on the role of an aspiring actor encountering a world of fellow artists utilising pain, distortion, and the recurring motif of fish, to turn anguish into art - or is it entertainment? Finally, as they head up the lift to the heights of Naarm, overlooking the city in a luxurious restaurant, William embodies the role of alpha-male stockbrokers and mining companies, lavishly devouring seafood and guzzling wine, all the while mocking his engagement with Andrew Forrest's Mindaroo mining corporation. There's an acidity to Faceless that, once splashed on the surface of this land, exposes it for what it is: a fractured home of unresolved issues. In turn, those issues have become an unhealthy source of income or salvation.Faceless screens as part of the Accelerator Shorts sessions at MIFF on 13 and 23 August. EXPLAINED (https://youtu.be/wvWyr6SBGnA) (Easy English 191) Transcript Intro Mitch: [0:22] Hiya, welcome to the Easy English Podcast. Isi: [0:27] Poddy. Mitch: [0:28] The poddy. The poddy. This week, I wanted to speak about something which we've made an episode on, and I want to ask you for your opinion Isi, now you've been in the UK for some time. We want to speak about the British social class system. Isi: [0:46] Okay, I'm in. Mitch: [0:47] But before we do that, I just want to do some housekeeping, general housekeeping of the podcast. And that is to firstly, give you another nudge to remind you that we, at the moment in May, have a 50% sale of all of our memberships. That includes this podcast; there is a membership for, which you can join and get an interactive transcript, which helps to translate the entire podcast, interactively - whilst you're listening into your language of choice, to help you keep up and listen along with our podcast. Really useful for if you're someone who is struggling with your English comprehension and want to really understand exactly everything we're saying, because English people, we talk fast, we have really crazy accents and dialects all over the place, for such a small country. And we use a lot of slang and quite frankly, a lot of grammatical errors. And this will help you keep up and listen along with our podcast. Mitch: [1:54] We also offer memberships for our videos on YouTube, which is where you can get worksheets and things to help you if you're maybe more of a beginner. And if you're a more proficient English learner, maybe an expert you'd like to say, but you'd like to be able to practice your English speaking, because maybe you don't have any English friends or English speaking friends, then you can join our Conversation Membership for a 50% discount, this May. But you only have... tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, you have less than two weeks to claim your 50% discount. To check it out, all you have to do is go to easyenglish.video/membership to take you to our membership site, to check out all of the memberships we have on offer for 50% off in May. The second thing I want to say is that we forget, always, to mention that if you want to leave a message and feature on our podcast, then you can, you just have to go to easyenglish.fm and you'll find there's a little microphone button you can press and you can ask us questions. Maybe about an English language learning question, an English culture question, or anything you like, we will answer all of your questions. Mitch: [3:18] My question for you, Isi, speaking of culture, is; are you aware of this class system? Do you feel it when you're in the UK? Because it's a big cultural topic. In this episode of "ThinkFuture," host Chris Kalaboukis takes a deep dive into the persistence of hierarchies and class systems, even in spaces meant to break them down—like America and the internet. Chris reflects on how the U.S. aimed to ditch rigid class structures, allowing anyone with grit to climb the ladder, yet subtle hierarchies linger. He then pivots to the digital world, noting how the internet's early “Wild West” days—where anyone could connect with anyone—have been replaced by social media platforms that recreate class divides. With algorithms deciding who sees what (and pay-to-play boosting visibility), platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X have built-in upper, middle, and lower classes based on followers and engagement. Chris challenges listeners to imagine a social network without these tiers, returning to the internet's original promise of universal connection, and questions if it's even possible in today's world.---The First Future Planner: Record First, Action Later: https://foremark.usBe A Better YOU with AI: Join The Community: https://10xyou.usGet AIDAILY every weekday. https://aidaily.usMy blog: https://thinkfuture.com

Sandra Tsing Loh, writer and performer, discusses Paul Fussell's book “Class: A Guide through the American Status System”. Fussell's book was first published in 1983, and reviewed by Sandra in in 2009 in The Atlantic, but the ideas from it are as relevant as ever. As Sandra writes, “The experience of reading (and re-reading) Class is akin to wiping goggles one didn't know were fogged. Fussell's methodology settles into the brain like a virus; one soon cannot stop nanocategorizing one's world.” In this highly entertaining, conversational episode, we talk about the constraints of the class structure, the challenges of opting-out, the value of useless degrees, and what your living room furniture says about how likely you are to go on a Carnival Cruise.
