Saga Thing

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2026 100:18

In this episode, Glúm continues to establish himself as a leading figure in southern Eyjafjörður. We start with a brief overview of the many marriages that take place at this stage of the saga, including: Glúm - Halldóra Thórir of Espihóll - Thórdís Thórarinn of Espihóll - Thorgerd Thorvald Hook of Espihóll - Thorkötla Of course, the real trouble starts when Thórir's son Thorgrím sets his heart on the lovely Thórdís. Things get interesting from there. Check out the Víga-Glúms saga genealogy Andy's been building here. All these marriages naturally result in the arrival of many new characters to the saga. Among them are Már, the son of Glúm and Halldóra, and two special little cousins, Arngrím and Steinólf. These two boys get along better than anyone in Iceland. Surely they have a bright future ahead of them. Right? We also dive into a fun little story about Ingólf, a very large man who finds a home at Þverá with Már and Glúm. Through no fault of his own, Ingólf gets caught up in a somewhat precarious feud between Glúm and a no-good neighbor known as Kalf of Stokkahlaðir. There's a horse fight, some hurt feelings, and then thing leads to another. Before you know it, there's a lawsuit against Ingólf at the Althing. As usual, we've got plenty of digressions to distract you from the story. We talk about ice storms in Mississippi, snow storms in Massachusetts. We go on for too long about formalist approaches to the structure of Víga-Glúms saga and how we approach building an episode of Saga Thing. This actually leads to a brief discussion of the role of minor characters in the sagas, a subject that the great Ármann Jakobsson covers in his new book (grab a copy here): We discuss the fascinating subject of children and toys in medieval Iceland. While there's not much info out there, we found just enough to get John excited about a possible Saga Brief on the subject ;). At some point, I mention a small toy carving found at Seydisfjordur (a great spot to visit in the East fjords). What kind of animal is this? Read the article in Smithsonian for more information. As you'll hear, this episode is very digression heavy as we work our way through a transitional moment in the saga. There are many many references to Gabriel Turville-Petre's edition of the saga, which provides plenty of useful insights and discussion points for us. Welcome to the PRESSURISED version of episode 58, just the science, none of the waffle   We are still talking about Antarctica, the continent that keeps on giving!   For this month's interview, we speak with Devin Harrison - Marine Geoscientist/Postdoctoral Researcher at Kelpie Geoscience - Devin is a postdoctoral research fellow at Kelpie Geoscience. His research utilises high-resolution topographic models of the seafloor and complementary geophysical and geospatial datasets to understand the geomorphic evolution and process landform relationship of the deep sea and the continental shelves. Devin is particularly interested in the glacial geomorphological record and the evolution of glacial environments from the last glacial maximum (~20-25 thousand years ago) to the present day.   We're really trying to make this project self-sustaining, so we have started looking for ways to support the podcast. Here's a link to our page on how to support us, from the free options to becoming a patron of the show. We want to say a huge thank you to those patrons who have already pledged to support us: Elena Thanks again for tuning in; we'll deep-see you next time!   Check out our podcast merch here!   Feel free to get in touch with us with questions or your own tales from the high seas on: podcast@deepseapod.com We'd love to actually play your voice so feel free to record a short audio note!   We are also on  BlueSky: @deepseapod.com Twitter: @DeepSeaPod Instagram: @deepsea_podcast   Keep up with the team on social media Twitter:  Alan - @Hadalbloke Thom - @ThomLinley  Instagram:  Thom - @thom.linley  Inkfish - @inkfishexpeditions BlueSky: Thom @thomaslinley.com   Reference list Dowdeswell, J.A., Canals, M., Jakobsson, M., Todd, B.J., Dowdeswell, E.K. and Hogan, K. We are still talking about Antarctica, the continent that keeps on giving! Alan and Thom discuss trying to stop working momentarily, constructing a treehouse, and acquiring a shark. In the news, we rattle off a list of newly discovered species with some very cool (but hard to pronounce) names. There has been a lot of squiddy news. Footage of divers swimming with a giant squid has resurfaced; in an exclusive for the podcast, Alan has recorded more amazing Magnapinna (bigfin or elbow squid) footage. And the biggest bit of news: the colossal squid has been seen alive in its natural habitat for the first time! Thom and Kat were part of the press conference. Megalodon (the not-deep-sea and very extinct shark) has been reassessed based on what we do know. It was likely longer and slimmer than we thought, and we have estimations for their speed and size at birth. We also have a new coelacanth population and a classic car found in the deep.   For this month's interview, we speak with Devin Harrison - Marine Geoscientist/Postdoctoral Researcher at Kelpie Geoscience - Devin is a postdoctoral research fellow at Kelpie Geoscience. Haustið 2023 var ljóðskáldið Mosab Abu Toha tekinn höndum þegar hann reyndi að flýja Gaza og PEN samtökin og fleiri kölluðu eftir upplýsingum um afdrif hans. Þá var liðið ár frá því að Abu Toha gaf út sína fyrstu ljóðabók, Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear, sem farið hefur sigurför um heiminn. Móheiður Hlíf Geirmundsdóttir, skáld og bóksali, þýddi bókina á íslensku og lítur við í hljóðstofu. Gauti Kristmannsson, bókmenntarýnir, grípur í sígilda bókmennt eftir Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha sem segja má að hafi orðið til þess að mörg ungmenni hippakynslóðarinnar lögðu leið sína til Indlands. Þá grípum við niður í fyrsta þætti Kristlínar Dísar Ingilínardóttir, Var afa mínum slaufað, þar sem Ármann Jakobsson prófessor í íslenskum bókmenntum leggur orð í belg, og rifjum upp innslag um huldutónlistarmanninn G. It's a storied island with a rich saga tradition. A land of ice and fire. But rarely do we hear of how Iceland went from being a stouthearted farming settlement to one of the most respected nations on Earth. This week, Danièle speaks with Sverrir Jakobsson about what life in Iceland was like in the early Middle Ages, how it became linked to the kingdom of Norway, and how Iceland's interactions with Europe changed after the Black Death.  You can support this podcast on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/medievalists

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the Saga of the Earls of Orkney, as told in the 13th Century by an unknown Icelander. This was the story of arguably the most important, strategically, of all the islands in the British Viking world, when the Earls controlled Shetland, Orkney and Caithness from which they could raid the Irish and British coasts, from Dublin round to Lindisfarne.
