Jaryd Clifford experienced one of the cruellest Paralympic Games you could imagine. First, he was disqualified in the 5000m after crossing the line in bronze medal position. To really rub salt in the wounds, he missed out on another bronze in the 1500m by 0.01 of a second. Ouch. In his first podcast appearance since his Paris heartbreak, Jaryd speaks about what went wrong, the lessons he learnt the hard way and how he's bouncing back with optimism and excitement for the future. We talk about the positives that can come from experiencing failure and why your inner circle is so important for helping you recover from disappointment. The lessons in resilience that Jaryd shares can honestly be applied to anyone in any situation. This is a must listen! At the age of 25, Jaryd Clifford has already achieved so much. He's a world champion, world record holder and three-time Paralympian for Australia in the category for vision impairment across multiple distances. He won two silver medals in the T13 5000m and the T12 marathon, and a bronze in the T13 1500m at the Paralympics in Tokyo. Jaryd is sponsored by Nike, has a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Politics/Criminology, and does public speaking in his spare time. -- Jaryd's Instagram: @jarydclifford Run With It Instagram: @runwithit.pod Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

In the final edition of our Clean and Gold series of On Side, we relive the Paralympic Games highlights with the team's chief de mission Kate McLoughlin and Channel 7 commentator David Culbert. Madi de Rozario's gold and the silver to Jaryd Clifford on the final day of competition brought the team total to 21 gold, 29 silver and 30 bronze. McLoughlin tells hosts Tim Gavel and Petria Thomas that her main challenge was keeping athletes safe and “making sure they had that opportunity to perform”. This involved constant changes and reworking of scenario plans to try to ensure they were a step ahead to give athletes every opportunity to perform at their best. “They are elite athletes in every sense of the word,” she says. “They are just the same as their Olympic counterparts and they dealt with the changes and the challenges so brilliantly.” She says the whole team was “overwhelmed” with the reaction they received from home. “The fact that there was 14 hours of coverage in Australia, the fact that people were in lockdown and not able to go anywhere was a silver lining for us in a way,” she says. “…So many more eyeballs on the Paralympic team than ever before and hopefully a realisation of what an amazing team it is.” McLoughlin believes the focus on performances and not disabilities has been a gradual shift. David Culbert, a commentator for both the Olympic and Paralympic games, agrees. “At the end of the day the classification system whilst not 100% perfect in Paralympic sport, it groups like athletes with like athletes, so you can remove that element of it and just concentrate on the performance,” he says. “What times they do are only relevant to the times that they do, so therefore you need to know their personal bests, their season's best, the Paralympic records…” He says the Games offered a glimpse of hope for people with a disability and their parents. “The interesting thing about the Paralympics is that there would be a lot of parents that would be worried about their young children who have got a disability, whether it's congenital or whether it's acquired, they would be watching that and thinking that's there's nothing my son or daughter can't do…” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's episode is with Jaryd Clifford - Paralympic Athlete.  Jaryd is a vision impaired middle distance runner who made his Paralympic debut as a fresh-faced 17 year old at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. There is no denying that Jaryd raced well in Rio – he placed seventh in the men's 1500m T13 and men's 5000m T13, with one of his races attracting worldwide attention for being faster than its Olympic equivalent – but his improvement and success since then has been astronomical. Jaryd won a bronze medal in the men's 1500m T13 at the 2017 World Para-athletics Championships, became the first Paralympian to compete at the able-bodied U20 World Championships in 2018, and was crowned a dual world champion and world record holder in the men's 1500m T13 at the 2019 World Para-athletics Championships last November. He was set to be the man to beat at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games which has been postponed due to the pandemic, however this year Jaryd has managed to secure the first para-athlete sponsorship deal with Nike. Jaryd is a seriously inspiring athlete and human being with an incredible life mantra - “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced” This episode is brought to you by Giraffe Consulting. If your business is looking for a new perspective, visit www.giraffeconsulting.com.au + Follow Footprints on Instagram + Follow Giraffe Consulting on Instagram + Find Giraffe Consulting on LinkedIn + Jaryd Clifford on Instagram

Riley is joined on the show today by Paralympic star Jaryd Clifford. Jaryd competes in the T12 (vision impaired) classification in the 1500m and 5000m – where he is the world champion in both (oh, and he holds the world record in the 1500m). Jaryd chats with us from Canberra, where he relocated as lockdowns came into effect in Melbourne in July. In Canberra Jaryd has the opportunity to train with his coach, Dr Philo Saunders and his squad – including his guide Tim Logan. The athlete-guide relationship is critically important to Jaryd, and he speaks at length about the elements that have to go right for the partnership to work – in a race the athlete and guide are connected by a 30cm long tether – which is a lot shorter than it sounds!Jaryd also talks about his plans for 2021 and beyond – including a potential 1500m, 5000m, and marathon triple in the 2024 games. Mind blowing. This morning I had a 60 minute yarn with the ever inspiring Jaryd Clifford. Jaryd is a ‘blinky’ as he affectionately calls it, an athlete with a visual impairment and recently he became a dual World Champion at the 2019 Dubai Paralympic World Athletics Champs in the 1500m and 5000m! I was fortunate to be but a small part of his build up to the event (as physio on Pre-event Flagstaff altitude training camp). We talk about this experience, the ups and downs, Tokyo, his writing and much more. Tune in, it’s a fun listen and great insight into the life and head of one of modern day Australia’s most inspiring and amazing sporting athletes!

Lots to talk about once again as Sean & Tim digest all the action in the world of athletics. Weekend 2 of the All Schools Championships once again provided some challenging conditions as the heavens opened up of the Saturday competition. Nonetheless the cream rose to the top and some great performances in trying conditions were recorded. Day one of the World Para Athletics in Dubai provided Australia and Victoria with a big reason to celebrate as Jaryd Clifford took gold and claimed a new world record in the 1500m. Michael Roeger snared a silver in the 1500m to kick off a championship that holds plenty of promise for Team Australia. A number of AV Specialist Groups have kicked off their seasons so we report in on the action from the Rare Air Club and Milers Club meets. Lisa Verstraten was trackside at Milers Club to grab interviews with Marlie Campton, Alex Rowe, Lucinda Rourke and Sam McEntee. The Race Walking Club also started their summer program at Middle Park with a range of distances on offer. There are hot topics a plenty at the moment! Tim has delved into the current WADA banned list of athletes to come up with the top 10 nations – fortunately Australia is not there. With news coming through of the IOC move to shift the Out of Stadium Olympic events away from Tokyo to Sapporo, Sean discusses the reasons behind it and potential problems that may still face the organisers. And there are some disgruntled athletes in the Diamond League scene now that World Athletics have decided to dup a number of events from the 2020 program. The New York marathon has been run and won, so Sean provides an update of the performances from both the International and Australian competitors. So the anniversary edition of Down the Track is full of information, results and analysis from across the athletics spectrum. Jaryd is a classified T12 visually impaired very fast Track Runner. Earlier this year Jaryd set a World Record for the T12 visually impaired class in the 1500m, and lets not forget Jaryd is just the tender age of 18 years old. Jaryd ran an incredible 3:45 to post the World Record and that is off the back of some other remarkable achievements in recent times. Jaryd recently won the under 20 years able bodied 1500m in a time of 3:49. Jaryd first divbuted for Australia the 2015 International Paralympic Committee World Champs in Doha Qatar where he placed 7th in the 5000m, he then went on to match this result the 2016 Paralympic Games in doing so shaving 49 seconds off his 2015 time and setting an oceanic record in the 1500m and that 2016 Paralympic Rio experience. Jaryd had an extraordinarily 2016-2017 summer season where he slashed masses of times from his personal best, he went on at just 18 to become a Bronze Medallist in the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships earlier this year. During this conversation Jaryd takes us through what it was like for him as a young boy. His diagnosis of Juvenile Macular Degeneration which was made at the age of 3, pursuing other sports before focusing Jaryd's efforts on distance running, what is like before living day to day with the challenges that he encounters, we talk about bucket list, becoming the school captain, a usual physical performance round and of course the physical challenge for the week.
