In June of 2024 I finally set a date with Ventura surfing legend and master craftsmen Mr. Dennis Ryder for a quick interview. Fifteen minutes away from my home, Dennis and his wife live in a beautiful property alongside a calm creek. What seems to be a serene and beautiful creek unfortunately has another side to it. A nightmare turned reality due to a series of weather anomalies which included fires, apocalyptical rains and mudslides changed the Ryder's way of living. Though able to save their home, barely, the whole property and structures within have been compromised. For example, the shed that was Ryder's shaping bay and micro board factory for his "from scratch to finish" operation is now under water. The Ryder Family through their perseverance and determination are taking the steps to bring their property back to its almost original beautiful state.Dennis now shapes out of William Dennis Surfboards shaping bay and keeps producing beautiful functional magical surfboards under the label Dennis Ryder Surfboards. Paul Newton from Uriah Heep talks to Phil Aston for the Now Spinning Magazine Podcast Welcome to another episode of the Now Spinning Magazine Podcast! In this episode my guest is Paul Newton. He's known for his remarkable bass playing skills, he's been a part of the progressive rock scene since the late 60s, and he was the original bass guitarist for Uriah Heep. Recently, he added ‘author' to his impressive repertoire. Paul's music career is one to be celebrated. His early days with the progressive group Shinn saw him collaborate with organist Don Shinn and drummer Brian "Blinky" Davison. He then joined forces with Ken Hensley and Lee Kerslake in a reformed line-up of The Gods before becoming a founding member of Uriah Heep. Paul played a pivotal role in Uriah Heep's first three albums, which really set the foundation for the band's illustrious career. He has appeared on a plethora of recordings. In recent years, he's taken the stage with Uriah Heep Legends, alongside fellow Uriah Heep alumni Ken Hensley, John Lawton, and Lee Kerslake. He was also at the Masters of Rock Festival in the Czech Republic on 11th July 2019, where he played with Uriah Heep for the first time since 1971. That was a momentous occasion for rock fans around the world! Paul has made his debut as an author with the release of his book 'Bone Structure: A Journey From Boy To Band'. Ulla Vangelis – Leslie Reggie Carlisle – John (Beta) Trae Mowaka- Jesse Jack Nash – John (Prime) GM- Tod Foley Trae flips to his drone view to see that a child named "Max" has fallen into a fissure - into water below. There's chaos as the adults push the other kids out of the way, because they're all excited about finding fresh water. One of the adults calls Whisper to the front of the line, ordering her to climb up into the crack Max just fell through. They want to know how far down the water is. Ulla is the first to speak. "Ok I'm ready to go kill people. Who's with me?" and Trae pulls out his gun. Nash looks over and tells him "Trae, you are officially loose." As the group hustles down-tunnel toward the work site, Reggie establishes telepathic communication with Whisper. Splashing into the freezing water, she calls out "I've got him! I've got Max!" His body is cold. As the connection is broken, Reggie feels the rope pulling at her waist. By the time they get down there, every adult in town is standing around, smoking and slapping each other on the back. The miners and engineers are very excited about finding water, and no one seems concerned that a child died in the effort. Whisper hugs her. Then she spots Reggie on Nash's back, and runs over to hug him as well. "Jar Baby! You were there with me! How did you do that?" she asks. Reggie explains that she has powers, if she only works at psychic manipulation, she can do anything. "I couldn't save Max!" she says, and begins crying again. "I'm not like you, Jar Baby." - then she stops and her eyes open wide: "YOU CAN SAVE MAX,' she whispers. "You got manip-alation!" "Reg, back me up!" shouts Nash, as he runs to Max's side and begins attempting to resuscitate him. Reggie furrows his brow, envisioning bursts of Life Energy flowing into the small brain. Nash keeps massaging the kid's chest, and after a minute, the eyelids flutter, and Max sits up, spitting out water. The undergrounders stand there, amazed, saying nothing. "WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?" shouts Nash. Exo steps forward, waving his cigar around. "Look friend, I thank you for bringin' the kid back, but his lot in life is to WORK, just like the rest of us here. I don't know what YOU do... maybe YOU'RE the problem." Nash puts the child down and slams his fist into Exo's face, breaking his nose, as Exo grabs his wrist and pulls him close. In his other hand Exo has been holding a knife, and he stabs Nash in the ribs just as Nash head-butts him. The other adults all step back. Glancing over at Ulla, Trae pulls out his pistol and shoots the foreman who led Max's team. Ulla releases her nanobots. Her hair whips around as the tiny bots pour out of her nose and mouth, swirling out of her head in a giant black whirlpool. The undergrounders scream and back up, many of them running away up-tunnel. She then sends the cloud toward Exo's body, where they begin swarming around him, penetrating his skin. Eco's body begins swelling uncomfortably. Nash steps forward and stabs him, and Exo's body POPS like a giant blood-filled balloon. Blinky raises his hands and steps forward. "I take it you had problems with Exo," he says. "Some of us did." Turns out Blinky is the new leader. Ulla and Nash confront him about child labor, which he defends as "from each according to his ability." In the end it is decided that the child miners will be given a choice. The six youngest children, including both Whisper and Max, decide they want to go with "Jar Baby" and his friends. HBO Max has rebranded as Max, offering double the programming with 35,000 hours of content, including original shows, Warner Bros. films, and additional shows from networks like HGTV, Food Network, and Discovery Channel. Fortnite has announced a crossover event with Spider-Man, tied to the upcoming film "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse." Players can obtain Spider-Man-themed items from the in-game shop for a limited time, including outfits for Miguel O'Hara and Miles Morales, web shooters, and pickaxes. Lego has revealed a Pac-Man arcade set, faithfully recreating the classic arcade machine in brick form. Namco's ground-breaking arcade game Pac-Man had its first focus test in a Tokyo cinema foyer on May 22nd, 1980. Created by 24 year-old Toru Iwatani, it was originally called ‘Puck-Man' and designed to appeal to women as well as men. Each of the ghosts - Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde - was programmed to have its own personality using AI routines, creating a sense of ‘character' despite the pixelated rendering. Examining the interior of the lid, she's shocked to find a message embossed into the metal: "YOU WILL RETURN WHAT YOU HAVE TAKEN." She shows it to the others. Ulla comes clean and tells them about the experimental implants in her head. She was "designed," she explains, to function as a first-generation cyber-assassin for Wolfram. The system in her head is worth billions. She actually performed several missions for them -- including one that took out an important lieutenant of their enemy "The Fate Broker" and his army of "whisperer" informants -- but eventually she grew tired of their mistreatment and fled. They continue walking eastward, talking as they go. Ulla is experimenting with her new senses, mastering the use of this nano-swarm like a new skill, and becoming hyper-aware of things in her general area. Ulla becomes aware that there is a group of people about 300 meters ahead: they're a little bit below ground. Trae sends a drone ahead and locates an underground door. Nash and Reggie decide they'll go in first and Nash knocks on the door. The door cracks open a bit and a large gruff man in a mining helmet stares out at them. The man pulls a cigar out of his mouth and barks: "PEOPLE OR STATE?" Surprised, Nash assures the man that they have nothing to do with any city or state, so... "I'm gonna say people. The man opens the door for them and shakes everyone's hands. "My name's Exo, and I run this place. He leads them down a set of rickety stairs to a massive subterranean complex, all recycled wood and scavenged machinery. "Welcome to Tube City," he says. Exo leads them deeper into the complex. A workshift is just ending, and a crew of miners comes up the tunnel toward them. The foreman of the off-duty shift introduces himself as "Blinky," Ulla asks what exactly they're working on. Exo looks at her. "Why the tunnel, of course! We're gonna finish the job we came here to do!" He explains that they "hit a few snags" when the city abandoned the project. We'll be there in a year, maybe two. Are they ready for us? NO!" He rallies the others up around him, shouting "People over State!" Fists are raised, slogans are chanted. Nash asks Exo what they plan to do when the tunnel is completed. Exo tells him that they're already in touch with some people who'll be helping from inside. "When we finally break through, it's Revolution Time, son." Trae asks who those people on the inside might be. Exo laughs at him, and hands them off to Blinky. "Get these people a meal," he says & walks away. Blinky takes them back up tunnel to a small eatery where they have some lizard stew and hardtack crackers. Blinky explains how the job of digging the tunnel was a lot easier when they had the old automated equipment and AI, but now they're doing it "the old fashioned way: a lotta shoulder and back work." Trae asks him about the smaller tunnels Exo had mentioned. The foreman says they keep those tunnels sealed for a reason. Ulla notices that Whisper is hiding behind a nearby table. She coaxes the kid over and begins asking questions in a soothing voice. The kid listens intently and moves slowly closer, but doesn't speak. Finally the child is close enough to touch Ulla's knee, and leans in close to her ear.
