Medverkande:Dave Gascon, polis i Los Angeles (LAPD).Jim Newton, journalist verksam i Los Angeles.Martin Gelin, journalist och författare av boken ”Den vita stormen: Rasismens historia och USA:s fall”.Zoey Tur, tidigare Bob och helikopterreporter i Los Angeles.Shawn Holley, advokat i OJ Simpsons försvarsteam.En dokumentär av: Anna Gjöres.Producent: Hanna Frelin.Publicerad år 2024.
There are October Surprises, and there are October crisis. Just days before Americans went to the polls to vote for Ike's 1956 reelection, his allies France, England, and Israel launched a surprise October invasion of Egypt to capture the Suez Canal. With Cold War temperatures rising, Ike was faced with a high-stakes dilemma. Would he back his allies, or Egypt, for control of the all-important canal.Veteran journalist Jim Newton, author of Eisenhower: The White House Years, discusses the crisis that reshaped the political world order.Support the show
My brother in christ, Matt McLean, joins for a jaunty-ass personal episode about society's preventative answer to the war on drugs: DARE! Cops certainly did not get this one right, despite receiving an insane amount of funding. Like bonkers. In recent years, thousands of local newspapers have gone out of business, a trend exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. As of late 2019, over 65 million Americans lived in a county with either only one local paper or none. Studies show a connection between a shift away from local news and a decline in the number of candidates that run for local office as well as lower voter participation. Communities that have lost a newspaper are more likely to become politically polarized, which, as a recent Gallup poll notes, has significant negative impacts for our society. CivitasLA is joined by Jim Newton, former Editorial Page Editor & Columnist of the Los Angeles Times, to discuss the state of local news coverage of our communities and the role newspapers play in informing, educating, and engaging its readers, while alternative forms of news reporting and sharing are on the rise. Over a distinguished 25-year career, Jim served as a reporter, editor, bureau chief, columnist, and editor of the editorial pages. He is the recipient of numerous national and local awards in journalism and participated in two staff efforts, coverage of the 1992 riots and the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, that were awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Jim has also authored four books. In 2015, Newton joined the faculty at UCLA, teaching communications and public policy, and as Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Blueprint, a magazine about Los Angeles and California policy challenges. Learn more about Blueprint here: https://blueprint.ucla.edu/ For more information about CivitasLA, please visit www.CivitasLA.com and we hope you'll rate and review our show; and connect with us on Facebook (@CivitasLA), Instagram (@Civitas_LA) and Twitter (@Civitas_LA).
Jim Newton is a veteran journalist where he worked as a writer, reporter, editor, bureau chief, and columnist for the LA Times for 25 years. He is a recipient of many national and local awards in journalism and worked on several prominent cases such as OJ Simpson, Rodney King, and Michael Jackson. Now a retired writer, Newton teaches a writing course and a Journalistic Ethics course at UCLA. He also founded Blueprint Magazine in the Luskin School of Public Affairs. He comes on the show today to discuss how his passion for journalism began in high school, how it flourished during his time at Dartmouth College, his career as a journalist, and why wanted to become a professor. Professor Newton and I engage in rich discussion about the evolution of journalism, talk about what it was like to work on such prevalent cases, and he gives advice to college kids about how to make the most of their experience.

Veteran journalist Jim Newton discusses Man of Tomorrow: The Relentless Life of Jerry Brown (Little, Brown, May 12), a brilliant biography of California’s self-reliant, iconoclastic longest-serving governor. Then our editors offer their reading recommendations for the week, with books by Sarah S. Brannen and Lucia Soto, Candy J. Cooper and Marc Aronson, and Curtis Sittenfeld
With an overwhelming amount of news coming from mainstream media, blogs and social media, Jim Newton, a former LA Times Editor at Large and professor of Public Policy at UCLA, joined us for an IVY Ideas Night. Among many other topics, he touches on the evolving industry of journalism, using insights from his experience and personal journey. Though social media and blogs are essential to mainstream media succeeding, he claims nothing can take the place of true reporting, as there is a difference between fact and opinion. That being said, they must coexist in order for the other to be successful.

What are these issues, and what others are likely to arise with Donald Trump as president? How are the courts likely to resolve them? Chemerinsky, the founding Dean and Professor of First Amendment Law at UC Irvine– and one of our leading constitutional scholars— addresses these questions with veteran journalist Jim Newton. Wilson: An Intimate PortraitA. Scott BergIn conversation with Jim Newton, editor-at-large, LA TimesPulitzer Prize-winning biographer A. Scott Berg clears away myths and misconceptions in this penetrating portrait of one of America’s most influential yet often misunderstood presidents. This deeply emotional study reflects the whole of Wilson’s life, accomplishments and failings- from designing the ill-fated League of Nations, using his trailblazing ideas that paved the way for the New Deal, to his denouement as a politician whose partisan battles left him a broken man. *Click here to see photos from the event!

There may be more to "Like Ike" than we realize. Veteran journalist and editor-at-large of the Los Angeles Times, Jim Newton offers a bold reappraisal of the 34th president, who was belittled by critics as "the babysitter in chief." Newton yields a portrait of a shrewd leader, a progressive politician, and a champion of peace who refused to use an atomic bomb, grounded McCarthyism, built an interstate system, and turned a $8 billion deficit into a $500 million surplus.

TechnotronicWhen you're looking for an example of a huge fast marketing splash, few have been more effective than Jo Bogaert. He's the Belgian music producer who, in 1988, created the "Techtronic" sound that spread like wildfire over land, air and ocean to seemingly everything and every place that played music. His global hit single "Pump Up the Jam" with vocalist Ya Kid K was ubiquitous whether you were at a club in New York, an elevator in Tokyo or a cafe in Paris. The song and the sound spread like Kudzu and kept its grip on world music well into this decade.Jim Newton wouldn't discourage a "viral" splash like that, but both he and his clients would really prefer to build it themselves. And that's exactly what they're doing at Tech Shop. Mr. Newton is the founder of this nationwide nirvana for those who never got enough of Industrial Arts in high school. But actually Tech Shop is much more since it allows anyone with a manufacturing idea, to create, design & produce that dream all for about the cost of joining your local YMCA.For this week's special "On-the-Road" edition of Autoline, John McElroy takes you inside the original Menlo Park, California Tech Shop location. Here you'll meet some of the members of this creative community, experience their dreams coming to life and see why this idea is already spreading Technotronic-like across America, perhaps coming soon to a neighborhood near you.

Forty years ago, California's higher education system was the envy of the nation. It´s bold strategy welcoming any resident who wanted to learn led to a doubling of enrolled students, and sparked similar efforts across the country. California ranked high among other states for its share of working adults with a bachelor´s degree. But that figure has declined sharply in the decades since. According to new research by the Public Policy Institute of California, by 2025, the state will fall nearly one million college graduates short of serving its economic needs. With dire California budget crunch, vast demographic shifts including the retirement of the Baby Boomer generation and the influx of immigrants, and the ongoing struggle for stronger secondary education, California needs to recall and possibly adapt its long-heralded higher education vision. What prompted California´s fall from higher education excellence, and how can it be reversed? Zócalo and the Public Policy Institute of California host a panel including Los Angeles Times editorial pages editor Jim Newton, Campaign for College Opportunity Executive Director Michele Siqueiros, UCLA professor Gary Orfield, and PPIC Associate Director Hans Johnson on the history and future of higher learning in California.
