He discusses various factors that he believes could be favourable in the current market environment and updates us on Fidelity all-in-one ETFs. Étienne discusses how value has a chance of doing well this year, but it's not a guarantee. It will depend on many upcoming factors including getting fewer cuts than expected, the labour market remaining strong, large growth names continuing to work through challenging environments and more. He explains it ultimately relies on the macro standpoint; if the rates are going up while there is less sensitivity to the change in the discount rate. With that, your net present flows become worth more than companies that are discounting in the far future.  Étienne also dives into the world of cryptocurrency, specifically how the SEC in America has given their approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs. This means that Canadian Bitcoin ETFs will lose a portion of its demand from American investors, and their prices will also decrease given the aggressive fee structure and increase in overall volume.  Recorded on January 12, 2024 At Fidelity, our mission is to build a better future for Canadian investors and help them stay ahead. Today on the show, we welcome ETF Strategist Étienne Joncas Bouchard as he breaks down the latest ETF trends, including investing trends for the remainder of the year. Étienne gives an overview of the growth of ETFs in Canada. Last year, there was $35 billion in net new assets. As of September of this year, we are at $30 billion for the industry, which is dominated by the fixed incomes, mostly cash alternatives such as HISA ETFs and MM. He notes there has been significant growth in the active side of ETF industry over the past couple of years. Étienne points to a survey done by a discount broker in the US reports that 89% of millennials own ETFs and it's their vehicle of choice. And more than 60% of baby boomers would use ETFs as their vehicle of choice. Taking a look at US equities, Étienne says in terms of performance it has been pretty good when you look at the benchmark. He says we've seen double digit returns so far this year on the S&P500, but a big concern is the lack of breadth. There are fears that this index is too concentrated and is really pulled up by the magnificent seven stocks. Those stocks represent 95.6% of the YTD total return of the index as of October 20th. Étienne also touches on the volatility of the bond markets, factor investing, and all-in-one- ETFs. Recorded on October 27, 2023. North American equity markets have been relatively flat of late, following a wave of disappointing earnings this earnings season. U.S. Treasury yields have also slipped as new data signalled a greater-than-expected economic slowdown. Today we ask how this market environment is affecting the ETF space. Etienne Joncas-Bouchard, ETF strategist, joins host Bryan Borzykowski today, for a discussion on which factors may be favourable in the current market environment, and to provide an update on the Fidelity All-in-One ETFs. Etienne shares today that the main reason all-in-one ETFs have been growing in popularity is due to their simplicity as well as ensuring broad diversification. Among other topics, Etienne also comments on the market's ambition to expect rate cuts, shares how not every dividend strategy is the same, and notes that high-quality names have been popular lately as those businesses generally do well coming out of a slowdown and are able to weather inflationary pressures better. It's been a wild year for investors both in equities and fixed income. As we approach the end of the year, what factors should investors consider as we settle into a late cycle? What factors tend to outperform during this period? On today's show, ETF strategist Étienne Joncas-Bouchard explains how he is attracted to high-quality and low volatility. With host Kathryn Black, Director of Sales Enablement, he shares his thoughts on a fixed income. In the coming year, he says to expect GICs to be a great short-term opportunity. Moreover, it might be helpful to look at more options as GICs have yet to outperform bonds the last two years in a row. Étienne also touches on the benefits of Fidelity All-in-One portfolios. While the fees are slightly higher, those higher fees allow Fidelity's strategy to be vastly different from competitors, involving factor-based equities and active fixed income. Joining host Quinn Flaherty today are Fidelity Canada ETF Strategists Etienne Joncas-Bouchard and Himesh Patel for a look at factor investing. Given the recent market volatility, inflation concerns, and how central banks will react to inflation, this seems like an opportune time to revisit the Fidelity Canada ETF lineup and specifically the factor-based ETFs. Etienne and Himesh also share their perspectives on the current market environment, look at the performance of various factors, and look at the topics and storylines they'll be following in the weeks and months ahead. Recorded on May 18, 2022. At Fidelity, our mission is to build a better future for Canadian investors and help them stay ahead. Today is the last episode Ministry Monday will be airing before a two-week Holy Week and Easter hiatus. We wanted to leave you with an episode that would provide a prayerful pause as you wrap up the last rehearsals, make the last binders, and write the last “thank you” notes to your Holy Week musicians. Today we begin a conversation focusing on the sequences and hear from Fr. J. Michael Joncas. What is the history of a sequence's form? What terminology predates the sequences? How can we most effectively employ sequences in our parishes? It is a great episode from which to prepare the Sequence for Easter Sunday.
