The mentorship gap is a frequent topic of discussion in a lot of climbing circles, and the gap seems to be especially pronounced for climbers trying to get into crag and boulder development. In this episode, we dove into the joys of having too many mentors to count. Long-time developer and AAC member Josh Pollock decided to collaborate with Jefferson County, in the Front Range of Colorado, to develop a beginner-friendly crag called the Narrow Gauge Slabs. For this project, sustainability and accessibility was a focus from the start, and Josh and other local developers designed a mentorship program that would coincide with developing the crag, to support climbers of traditionally marginalized backgrounds who want to equip themselves with knowledge and mentorship resources so that they could be developers and mentors in their own right. In this episode, we sat down with Lily Toyokura Hill and Ali Arfeen, two mentees in the program who have really taken this experience and run with it, stepping into leadership roles in the local climbing community. We cover what inspired them to become developers, perceptions of route development and who belongs, grading and individual bolting styles, and much more. The conversation with Lily, Ali, and Josh illuminates a lot about the power of mentorship and the complex considerations of developing in modern climbing.

Check out thewpminute.com for the links. In the News There was a lot of excitement this week around LTDs (LifeTime Licensing Deals). There were several posted reactions to the email sent from Delicious Brains, the new owners of Advanced Custom Fields. The email was not well-received (to say the least) by some users that have had Lifetime Licensing because it was asking for a part-time donation for the product. Twitter exploded with reactions and many in the WordPress community responded as well. We covered this on the WPMinute and Sarah Gooding also wrote about both perspectives — positive and negative — in her article over on the WPTavern. The bottom line is that the lifetime licenses are tough, and very few still remain in the WordPress space. ACF (read: Brad) will continue to honor the pricing for legacy customers. The Lawsuit claimed AMP was created for the purpose of pushing publishers away from “header bidding.” The full text of the newly unredacted complaint, which was unsealed by a federal judge last week, references research from internal Google documents. It states that internal Google communications identified header bidding as an “existential threat.” We will keep an eye on Sarah's reporting as this concern should continue to be a priority for the WordPress Community. It means that he didn't have a formal Computer Science degree and his knowledge came from his community engagement and participation. Josh came out of the WordPress community where he has developed several plugins for the platform over the last few years. CalderaWP was the company that he co-created and it was acquired in 2019 by their competitor, Saturday Drive. It is where Josh works now and he is still helping to create and mainlining amazing plugins for WordPress. We spoke about his experience of selling his baby, I mean, his company. Josh Pollock had tapped into his local WordPress community when he started Caldera Forms. (6:03) Christie and Josh got to know each other organically before deciding to partner in a business. (7:03) Founder meetings and networking seminars should be approached cautiously. You do not want to appear phony when you are trying to find a good business partner. (8:41) The strong parts that each person can deliver must be bigger than one goal. (9:59) The best way to grow your business is to be helpful. You can put something out there that can solve a problem for a particular group of people. (12:06) Sales Growth: The approach to getting customers is constantly changing because so many people have multiple options at their fingertips. (13:54) What is being taught in business school for sales is getting thrown away. The retail space is changing across the board. (14:22) The consumer has more information today and is able to have a two-way conversation with the vendor. (15:40) Old patterns die hard. We are seeing a generation now that only grew up with the Internet. (16:31) Cultural changes are happening across all industries (ex: food) and across all forms of marketing.  The consumer has more options and choice today.(17:42) Small businesses are competing on a differentiating strategy rather than just low cost – now you need to find a niche with a product that is unique. (20:56) The Future of WordPress: There is an idea in the WordPress world that there is room for everyone. But the reality is that you need to find the thing that makes your product unique and special. (22:24) It has been said that WordPress.com and Automattic are able to get in front of the typical user with an unfair advantage.(25:23) WordPress has a very specific problem in the industry, with risks, it's advantages and disadvantages because of the opensource world. (27:47) The risk with any business that ties itself to a platform (like WordPress) is that it can change, which means your business will need to change. (28:23) Every business should have a “get hit by a bus plan”. It helps the business if you diversify and keep your skills current if you need to pivot and move quickly. (30:39) Research and development are very important. Many plugins are getting Gutenberg ready. (33:05) The space of easy websites is changing the climate. (34:21) Tactics used for Business Growth: Create conversations everywhere. It is important to talk about what is going on in the industry. (36:33) Make sure you know that your customer's needs are being met. (37:18) Encourage people to connect with you on Facebook, your website, Meetups and everywhere your customers are. In this episode, I share a conversation that I had with Josh Pollock, who is a wildlife biologist in Utah, where I discuss turkey populations and my best chance for success on my upcoming hunt there. I want to be sure I am setting myself and my hunting buddies up for the best chance for success, especially when preparing for a public land hunt. One of the best ways to do that is to ask the people who know the most about the land you’ll be hunting where you can find huntable birds.  That is exactly what I do in this week’s episode. Early in the conversation with Josh Pollock, I ask what the chances of success are in Southern Utah, and the next thing I know he is telling me exactly where I should start in my search for birds. This type of assistance is exactly what we all are looking for when we are preparing for a public land hunt. Listen in to hear some of the questions I ask Josh so you can write them down and ask the biologist or game warden who is over your favorite public hunting lands the same questions. I also briefly discuss the upcoming NWTF Convention and Sports Show and my request for show topic ideas as well as the ongoing listener survey.

What creates WordPress' potential teams is code in the form of custom plugins, themes, integrations, and more. If you're writing custom code to extend your own site in new and interesting ways or building plugins and themes to distribute, not using modern developer tooling and automated testing can open up additional risks for you or your clients and drastically slow you down.In this episode of PressThis, we interview Josh Pollock of Plugin Machine about his thoughts on why modern development tooling & automated testing are super important in WordPress development, some of his favorite developer tools, and how to approach automated testing with your WordPress development projects. If you're looking to harden your current WordPress development approach or you're looking to expand your developer skillset, don't miss this episode of PressThis.
