Welcome back to the Cross Points Church podcast! We are your hosts, David and Orah, and we are thrilled to be with you again after a four-year hiatus. It's hard to believe it's been so long, but life has a way of keeping us busy. From babies to pandemics, we've faced it all, and now we're excited to reconnect with our amazing community. Whether you've been with us from the start or are tuning in for the first time, we're glad you're here. Let's dive in and catch up on all that's happened and explore some thought-provoking topics together. Episode Notes: Scriptures Referenced in the Episode: 1 Samuel 3:1-10 - The story of young Samuel hearing God's voice for the first time. “In those days, messages from the Lord were very rare, and visions were quite uncommon.” (1 Samuel 3:1) John 10:27 - Jesus talking about His sheep hearing His voice. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27) Elijah's Story - Hearing God's voice in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:11-13). “After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” (1 Kings 19:12) Moses and the Burning Bush - God speaking to Moses through the burning bush (Exodus 3:1-6). “There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.” (Exodus 3:2) Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trusting in the Lord for guidance. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) Philippians 4:6-7 - Finding peace through prayer and petition. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7) Finding Quiet Time: Make a conscious effort to eliminate distractions and find a quiet space to listen for God's voice. Start with short periods of silence and gradually increase the duration. Try practicing seven minutes of silence each day for a week to center yourself and listen for God's guidance. Reading Scripture: Engage with the Bible regularly to understand God's character and voice. Use both theological study and personal reading to deepen your relationship with God. Allow scripture to challenge and encourage you, and personalize the messages you read. Tips for Engaging with Scripture: Regular Reading: Make it a habit to read the Bible daily, whether through a reading plan, devotional, or study guide. Reflect and Journal: Write down your thoughts and reflections on the scriptures you read to internalize the messages. Pray for Understanding: Ask God to open your heart and mind to His word, seeking deeper insight and application in your life. Discuss with Others: Share what you've read and learned with friends, family, or a study group for broader perspectives and encouragement. You are the light, and you are here on Earth to light up the world. When you feel your very best, you're out in the world doing your best. It's only when you feel hurt that you could hurt others. Join this episode to learn about the journey your soul is taking through the darkness to remember who you really are. You'll learn rituals to increase your positivity and help you shine your light the brightest. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: The story of the little soul and the sun Remembering who we really are The role of negative thoughts and the ego The eight bad moods of the ego Rituals you can practice to make you feel good every day The power of meditation, prayer, & journaling [05:17] Remembering Who We Are We're walking through this world of darkness to remember who we really are. And who we are is not the pain and the hurt and the suffering and the darkness – who we are is the light. We can only know that light – love, joy, peace, forgiveness, and compassion – when we experience the opposite of it. When we get stuck in those bad mood emotions, we're like a magnet for more bad things and more things that attract circumstances that prove that those emotions are valid and worthwhile. So if we do things that are negative, we'll feel more negative. [17:23] Rituals to Make You Feel Good Be mindful that your brain is not you. Choose which thoughts you want to believe and which ones to pass on by. Limit the inputs that are negative. Eliminate the news. Watch positive shows. Unfollow people in your social media feed that make you feel bad. Stay away from things that trigger negative thoughts such as fast food, alcohol, pornography, and lack of sleep. Finally, feed your brain with positive inputs and make a list of the things that make you feel good. [25:29] The Power of Meditation, Exercise, Journaling, and Reading (1) Meditation allows you to separate yourself from the thoughts that your brain is giving you. (2) Journal - Write three things you did well the day before. Then write three things you're grateful for. Get super small on gratitude, whether that's your cup of coffee this morning or the electricity in your house. Then write down the top three goals in your life. (3) Read. Feed your brain with something positive. (4) Exercise - It's scientifically proven that if you exercise, you feel good. When you work out, you feel good about yourself and it increases your confidence. Notable quotes: [05:17] You are walking through this world of darkness to remember who you really are… You are the light. [05:30] [06:23] Humans have about 70,000 thoughts a day… how many do you think are positive and how many do you think are negative? [06:33] [23:41] Here's the truth. When you feel on top of the world, what can you accomplish? Anything! Dwayne had a dream of being in the NFL and when he realized that would never be a reality he stated "All my friends were living their dream and I was living a nightmare," he said. "I fell into depression at that time." He also said “Struggle and pain is real. I was devastated and depressed, I reached a point where I didn't want to do a thing or go anywhere. I was crying constantly.” I have been there. I remember not wanting to get out of bed for days on end. Struggle and pain are part of this existence. We all learn to deal with it differently. Many of us, especially Men, don't want to talk about it. There is an ongoing stigma around depression. Especially in the military. If you are going into or are in the military you cannot mention ever being depressed. This is a taboo. If you have had any depression in your life they will not let you in the military. If you have it when you are in you will never get a promotion. The Military doesn't know how to deal with emotion especially depression so they just screen for it. If you wonder how that works for them look at the veterans suicide numbers. The Rock said, "It's kind of like what's been deemed as 'toxic masculinity.' You've got to talk about it and (realize) you're not alone.” Talking about feeling that is not masculine! That is a crock. The only reason not to discuss feelings is fear. If fear is not masculine then talking about feelings is. Later on he tweeted "We all go through the sludge/shit and depression never discriminates," he wrote. "Took me a long time to realize it but the key is to not be afraid to open up. Especially us dudes who have a tendency to keep it in. You're not alone." So what are the things to look out for? Things that help you overcome depression Talk or be around others who lift you up Exercise and eat right: I know it's hard to believe but Dwayne says he likes to go to the gym. Mindfulness: Change your thoughts Practice meditation, stay present Journal Write your story give it your past and pain a outlet write out things you are grateful for Serve others this builds new relationships and help you be grateful Get enough sleep, go to bed and get up at the same time. The other day I was driving to the grocery store, and suddenly a memory from an accident that happened to my son came to mind. I started remembering this painful event, and straight away, I noticed feeling negative about myself. I began to feel insecure about my parenting as I still blame myself for my son's injury. Connecting with the problematic memories made me realized that I still have not resolved and healed from this event. As any parent, I deal with situations that bring me to doubt my parenting skills. Sometimes I tend to find it more challenging to deal with negative self-talk in these parenting issues. Maybe you find this too. Perhaps you also have noticed that specific memories or situations can trigger negative self-talk in your life. Usually, they are about the things that we feel the need to be perfect and judge ourselves harshly because we think we have failed. This self-criticism can also be things related to our identity, moral principles, or values. There is a mindful solution that I use, and you can use it too to cope with negative self–talk. Whether the inner voice is talking about your parenting, work, relationships, or self-control, you can use this mindful technique. Every time that we bring mindfulness to a challenge, it always starts with listening to our inner dialogue. A mindful solution Journal: Write down the event and the words that come to mind during your negative inner dialogue. For example, it will look like I was driving, and my mind wandered to memory about a painful event with my son. My internal dialogue was: You should have done better. You are responsible for what happened. You failed as a mother. Mindful attention: Bring your attention to your body and notice how you feel as you write these words. Write down whatever comes to mind. Write the opposite though: Think about changing your perception and phrase it the opposite way. “I did the best I could at the time. I'm not responsible for what happened. I didn't fail as a mother'. As you write these opposite statements, notice what feeling and emotions arise. Keep writing down how you feel as you connect with these sentences. Finish with writing down your lessons: Look at the bright side of what happened and reflect on personal growth and how you will do better next time. Here is today's quote: “Beautify your inner dialogue. Beautify your inner world with love, light, and compassion. Life will be beautiful.” Amit Ray And my one question for you is… How often is your negative self-talk disrupting your inner peace? In Today's Episode I discuss how in midlife we can often be lonely. Our kids have left the nest or now they're in middle school or high school and they don't need us as much. Here are 6 tips to help you overcome that loneliness. Tip #1: Action! Do something that fills your tank. If you're feeling bad be creative and try something new. Tip #2: Schedule Regular Appointments to Meet Up with Someone. Knowing that you will meet with someone on a regular basis gives you something to look forward to. Tip #3: Journal: Write 3 thoughts and feelings that you're having each day. Keep track of what has triggered those thoughts and feelings. You will start to get a better picture of your mindset. Tip #4: Join a Community. Find a group of women that you share ideas with and communicate. There should be different types of communities in your town or join a Facebook Group that interests you. Join The New Mid Official Facebook private group! We're a group of midlife women talking about midlife issues! Tip #5: Exercise: Nothing will make you feel more alive and better than taking a brisk walk, pumping some iron or taking a class at your local gym or Y. It will get your endorphins going! Tip #6: Volunteer: Find an organization you believe in and go help them out. A lot of times you will get more out of the experience than the people you help. BUT make sure it's the right fit for you. If not, find an organization that's right for you. I'd love any feedback or comments you might have on the episode. “Teach us to number our days…” ~ Psalm 90:12 Welcome to Day 10! Here’s something for you to think about. What did you have for breakfast yesterday? Where did you go? What did you see? Who did you spend time with? Does any of what you did really matter? In his inspiring book, “Go Outside and Come Back Better”, author Ron Lizzi proposes the concept that many good days make up a good life. He invites us to, “Picture a see-saw, (teeter-totter in some places). This balance represents your life…” He then asks you to imagine that when you came to the end of every day, if it was a good day, you would place a stone on the right side of the seesaw. If it was a bad day, or at least a not-so-good day you would place a stone on the left side. So for a very bad day, say the death of a loved one, you lost your job, or received bad news, the stone would go on the far left. And for a very good day, a great day, like - you got married, the birth of a child, landed your dream job, etc., you would place a stone on the far right. All the other days, so-so days, where nothing very remarkable happened, you would place a stone more towards the center; closer to the left if it wasn’t such a good day, and closer to the right if it was ok but yielded nothing memorable. Are you with me so far? So you’ve got this teeter-totter full of stones on top of it, and as you look at it, you begin to realize that the seesaw is off balance, tipping either to the right or left, for good or bad. Get the picture? This balance symbolizes the quality of your life. For most of us, our seesaw would probably look pretty balanced, leaning only slightly to the left or right. Hopefully, more to the right, because we had more of what we would call “good days” than bad. These “good days”, Ron Lizzi calls “matterdays”. “In short”, he says, looking at the balance you could say “some days matter and some days don’t. The day stone balance only holds stones for what I call matterdays.” He then points out that the farther to the left or right a stone is placed on a balance, the greater its impact on the balance. Therefore, he says, “a great matterday or an awful matterday will have a larger impact than a bunch of marginally good or bad matterdays”. What if nearly every day for the rest of your life was a good or great “matterday”? What if you could create great matterdays any time you wanted simply by doing things you enjoy that have a positive impact on your life and the lives of those around you? Great matterdays are the ones you remember because of how you felt and what you thought. These can create new discoveries and feelings, new understandings and fresh outlooks on life and the world at large. So how do we do this? Where do we begin? Such days are available from… you guessed it, time spent in Nature! Wild places have the power to renew and inspire us. They lift our gaze and create new memories and values. They refresh, restore, invigorate, and can even heal us! Research is verifying that time spent in nature impacts us in ways we can’t even fully understand. It surprises and delights us, freeing us from our everyday prisons of self-absorption and technology. Nature is the ultimate elixir. And the more time you spend in the great outdoors, the better the quality of life you begin to have. So here at Mountain Zen Den, I propose a new day of the week. In fact, from now on if you like, stop thinking of it as weekdays and the weekend - Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Let’s just start thinking of every day as Matterday. Keep this in mind as you head out the door and explore the big, beautiful world that awaits you just off of your doorstep today! And remember, as a wise man once said, “It’s not how many days you were alive, but about how many days you truly lived”. Go and live this day well, my friend… We’ll see you Matterday! Checklist for Day 10 ☐ MEDITATION: Active meditation - Day 10 ~ “Creating a ‘Matter’ Day” (Listen to this active meditation on iTunes or here at Mountain Zen.) ☐ NATURE WALK: Walk, run, sit or lie down outside for 20 minutes, creating a new matterday to add to your “life balance”, (your seesaw). Make it your best day yet! ☐ JOURNAL: Write about your experience and one thing you are grateful for. That’s it! See you back here tomorrow for another Matterday in the Park, (if you’re a Chicago fan you’ll be singing that song all day long… sorry for putting that earworm in your head…) If you like post your pictures, experiences, observations and questions and share them on our 21-Day Nature Challenge Facebook Community Group page. We'd love to hear how it's going for you!
Welcome to Day 9 of the 21-Day Nature Challenge! Do ever feel like there’s just not enough time to get everything done? Guess what? There isn’t. It is a sad fact that here in the age of high-tech convenience where we can have pretty much anything we want on demand, the feeling that life is supposed to constantly be busy and rush by in a blur is a normal thing; not healthy, just standard living these days. And no one really seems to notice, or care. Or at least we don’t believe we have the time to do anything about it. We’ve said it before, but here at Mountain Zen Den it’s not about spending time in nature for the sake of being more mindful just to be mindful. (Although that’s not necessarily a bad thing.) It’s really about creating and designing the lifestyle that you desire and know you were meant to live. When we are always madly rushing from one task to the next, one appointment to another, one soccer game, one project deadline, one birthday party or funeral, without a sense of purpose, place and groundedness, we lose our way, become frustrated, sad, lonely, empty and lost. Our internal sense of purpose and place in eternity is being denied. We basically forget how to live; or why we’re alive in the first place. We are not cattle raised in a pen, waiting to be slaughtered for beef before ever having lived a real life. That is no way to live my friend. And it shouldn’t be normal. It’s not how we were created to be and deep inside you know it’s true. So what is the answer? It’s in slowing down enough to take the time to listen deeply, and with intention to the still, small voice deep within, that we begin to find and truly understand how it is that we are supposed to live. Mindfulness is the vehicle to help us get there. Slowing down doesn’t mean becoming less productive. It’s much the opposite. When we slow down with purpose and intention there is a lot less “doing”, and a lot more “accomplishing”. When we decide to choose to become mindful we begin to allow life, and our thoughts to unfold life a delicate flower, or to grow like a seed planted in fertile soil. Whatever you’re doing right at this moment, I want you to stop, take a deep breath and just look around you. What do you see? What do you feel? What do you know deep in your heart? Is there a sense of peace? Or anxiety? Joy? Or fear? Take another slow deep breath… Ask yourself, “What can I do today to slow down enough to live the life I know I was meant to live? How can I design my life to be productive without killing a little part of myself every day?” Immediately the thought arises, “But that’s not realistic! I have so many responsibilities with so much to do!!” What’s not realistic, is thinking we can keep up a crazy, mindless, frenetic pace without losing something near and dear to us - our true life, relationships and our very souls. If you are living a life full of purpose, at a pace that is slow enough to appreciate and enjoy, you are in rare company these days. I don’t know about other countries but it’s a well-known fact that the average American is overworked and overstressed. Road rage, school and workplace shootings and mindless acts of stupidity can be found in the news every day. These are all indications of a society that has lost its connection with true meaning and purpose, with a better way of mindful living. The good news is that the cure is right outside your front door. Not only does spending time in Nature and her seasons give one a richer experience, with a sense of truly being alive, but it also enhances our sense of time and place in the Universe. Because things in the natural world occur and unfold in an organic, unhurried rhythm, when we align ourselves with Nature, we are able to find our place again. This seemingly minor adjustment can make a world of difference in our lives. But it must first be an intentional, mindful decision. To slow down and truly enjoy a well-lived life is a beautiful art, just like poetry, music, training bonsai trees and dancing. Today, in everything you do, decide you will slow down, enjoy it, and do it with purpose and intention. Checklist for Day 9 ☐ MEDITATION: “Practicing the Art of Slowing Down” (Listen to this active meditation on iTunes or here at Mountain Zen.) ☐ NATURE WALK: Before stepping outside today, do everything mindfully, with purpose and meaning. Make your tea or coffee, breakfast and lunch in a thoughtful and grateful manner. Put on your shoes with mindfulness and intention, etc. Step outside, take a deep breath, and just pause for a moment, being alert, awake, aware and alive - grateful for the opportunity to live this day. Now go spend the best 20 minutes of your life outdoors that you have ever had! ☐ JOURNAL: Write about your experience and anything you are grateful for. Don't forget to post your pictures, experiences, observations and questions, and share them on our 21-Day Nature Challenge Facebook Community Group page. Thanks!
We all know that eating junk food is not good, sugar is not the best, that overeating or binging is not good for our body and our weight. Yet we do it. We are intelligent people. We have the facts, we have the data, we’ve listened to podcasts telling us that sugar drives inflammation and insulin. We know that if we want to lose weight, we need to eat better and less… So what the heck is the problem? I believe it’s self-awareness. Self-awareness is from the Greek aphorism: Know Thyself. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines self-awareness as: an awareness of one’s own personality or individuality. Self-awareness is the conscious knowledge of one’s own character, feelings, motives, and desires. It’s the ability to understand ourselves. Self-awareness is about learning to better understand why you feel what you feel and why you behave in a particular way. With self-awareness, we can feel empowered to make changes in our lives. Self-awareness is a major mechanism of self-control. We notice what is going on in our inside world. Non judgement is essential We notice. We do not judge. No color. No good. No bad. No “I should” or “I shouldn’t.” Example: “I shouldn’t have eaten this much…I did it again. Why do I always do this? What is wrong with me?” Instead: “I don’t feel good right. My stomach is distended and my energy is low. I have overeaten during dinner. Isn’t it interesting that every time I go out with my friend X, I overeat?” Or “I ate ice cream again.. I can’t resist the freaking ice cream when we go out with the kids. I know it’s full of sugar. I know it’s not good for me. I know this is going to send me on a roller coaster of cravings more sugar yet I do it! Why can’t I just have more willpower?” Instead: “I ate ice cream. The ice cream tasted good. When I go out with the family at the ice cream parlor, it’s a difficult environment for me. I feel deprived because everyone else around me has ice cream, and I feel I can’t. When I feel deprived it makes it really hard for me to say no.” The key here: We accept this as part of being human. Part of human experience. Self-awareness is empowering Self-awareness will lead us to act consciously rather than reactively. We are no longer victims of our thoughts. We no longer react passively. We are conscious of our choices. We are in power. We’re not victims. Back to our example of overeating when you are with friend X: As you reflect without judgment that you are a bad person for overeating, you will discover that when you are with you friend X, you feel unheard, un- recognized, that you never get to share about your life. She takes all the space. So next time you go out with friend X, first you will be aware of your tendency to react to your relationship by overeating. You will express yourself more during your time together and gently yet firmly share your own stories and be heard. Instead of stuffing your feeling of frustration on the state of your relationship with food, you will attempt to improve the situation. Same for the ice cream… you will go into the experience knowing what you feel deprived. Maybe what you will do is to invest the time to learn to make healthy ice cream at home. You will have healthy ice cream from time to time when you feel like it. When you get to the parlor, you won’t feel deprived because you “never have ice cream because of your crazy diet.” The feeling of deprivation will not be there and you will be able to enjoy the time with the family for what it is… not for the ice cream. Once you begin to understand this concept, you then have the opportunity and freedom to change things about yourself, enabling you to create a life that you want. Self-awareness begins in willingness Being present, being self-aware is counterintuitive to today’s society. We are so busy all the time that we have little time left to be with ourselves, to reflect, and ultimately to be present. We operate from the subconscious part of our mind most of the time. Being present and conscious is work. Being aware and present require the willingness to be present and aware. Willingness, not willpower. Willingness means that you are now aware of the concept that we just learned and you believe that it will help you grow and advance in your journey, and you desire to take next steps. That’s willingness. You need that. Being self-aware begins with being present Self-awareness begins with being present in the moment. We need to develop the muscle of being in the moment. By being in the moment, we will be able to be self-aware and reflective without being judgmental. Otherwise, we will revert to the behavior we have repeated all of our lives — being reactive and judgmental. Mindfulness is a psychological process of bringing one’s attention to the internal experience occurring in the present moment. Below are three mindfulness exercise you can choose to practice to cultivate awareness: Mindfulness eating: Begin with one meal a day. Sit with no distractions and eat. Create space for you: Is there time in your schedule for you to be with yourself? No interruptions, no kids, no friends, no TV, no music — just you being with yourself. Start at 5 mins a day. Journal: Write about the things that you’re grateful for. If you’re a writer, write one page a day. Use a pre-written question to start the process of introspection. VIA SACRA – The Sacred Way This is what the LORD says: Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it… Jer 6:16a The Bible is God’s instruction manual for how we’re supposed to do life, marriage, finances, sexuality, relationships, business, every facet of life. (2 Timothy 3:16-17) 16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Life is as good as it will get when we are surrendered and submitted to the authority of the Bible. (Psalm 19:7-10) 7 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. 10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. How to study the Bible – Tools, not rules (from Matt Chandler’s 6/26/10 Saturday Seminar) What to Bring 1. Consistent time and place – You must solve the time problem. 2. Bible translation – Find one you like to read.* • Paraphrases: The Message, Living Bible, Amplified • Dynamic equivalence: New International Version (NIV), New International Readers Version (NIRV) • Word-for-word: King James (KJV), New King James (NKJV), New American Standard Bible (NASB), English Standard Version (ESV). *There is no excuse for not reading something. 3. Reading Plan – this will give you some direction to gain understanding of the whole revelation of God. It will make you read what you ordinarily would not. 4. Pen and highlighter – to mark verses that jump off the page. 5. Journal – to put down your thoughts, prayers, confusion, revelation, etc. Journaling will help you meditate and remember what your read. 6. Day Planner – This is not spiritual, but intellectual. There will be distractions (including resistance from your sinful nature). Use the planner to write down tasks that come to mind so you can deal with them later and focus. What to Do 1. Start with prayer – You need more than knowledge. You need God – to hear from Him, to have your heart and mind transformed by His word. 2. Read the Bible – Start small (5 minutes) and let it grow to 20 or 30 minutes or an hour. Do not read to check the box. Do not read like it’s a race. It is an opportunity to hear from your Creator and Savior. 3. Underline or highlight verses that jump out at you. 4. Journal – Write out the verses that jump out at you and observations. Write down other verses that relate. 5. Application – How would this apply to you? Write it down. Deal with your heart. You will not be able to do it like someone who’s done it for years. Start small and let it grow. The value is an accumulation of time spent with the Lord. Over time it will change your thinking and transform your heart and mind. Jeremiah 6:16 This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ You have to get to the root of why you are resistant to read the Bible. Not walking in the path that God has shown you exposes a problem in your heart. Your actions / inactions are from your heart. You have to deal with your heart or you will try this and fail.
