Kim [00:01:22]:Welcome to another episode of The Kim Doyal Show. I always say I'm very excited about my interviews, and it's true because I only talk to people I know, admire, and respect, and this is actually our 2nd time talking. But The 1st conversation I had with my guest, Marco Schmidt, which I'll do an official introduction in a minute, it was like I felt like we could have talked for hours. I'm like, we need to do a podcast episode. So here we are. So, first of all, welcome my guest, Marco Schmidt.Kim [00:02:05]:Marco, thank you for being here today.Marko [00:02:08]:Oh my god. Kim, it's Such a pleasure to be here, and it's really true. I mean, every time we connect, I just feel like, oh, wow, sister. You know? We're doing crazy cool stuff together. Even though we're operating in different places, we're still, like, in the same universe.Kim [00:02:22]:Totally. Totally. And we connected just through Twitter and then saw each other in a Kavon co cohort.Marko [00:02:30]:Right. Yeah. Yeah. We both love Kavon Chung. He's He's such a super cool guy in terms of bringing community together. And so and then, yeah, we've, like, had, you know, tons of, like, back and forth on Twitter and stuff like that, and I just love what I do. And so yeah. Super happy to be here.Marko [00:02:45]:Thanks.Kim [00:02:47]:Thank you. So I love hearing the backstory. So for the audience's audiences, I've got plurals now. But for the audience, can you share your backstory and what brought you to where you are today? And then we'll get into your business and what you're doing today.Marko [00:03:01]:For sure. I'm happy to talk to all of your audiences.Kim [00:03:07]:You know what?Marko [00:03:07]:Hey. Look.Kim [00:03:08]:Swear to god. Yeah. I sometimes my my mouth cannot keep up with my brain, but go ahead.Marko [00:03:14]:And vice versa. Right? I mean, sometimes I find my mouth saying something that my brain is going, no. No. No. Anyways, my backstory, probably it Started in some ways with dropping out of high school to join the circus. And, you know, it's like one of those things. I was one of those accelerated kids I was, like, always in the smart classes and got to do, like, the crazy fun things, you know, like going to the factory and seeing how they printed newspapers or, You know, bringing odd guests in and stuff like that. And by the time I got to high school, I had really thought high school is gonna be super fun, like college, like, really exciting, and it was Boring.Marko [00:03:51]:It was super boring. I lasted for almost 2 whole years, and then I dropped out to start doing circus work and play in a rock and roll band. And, I actually moved out of my parents' house and, you know, it's like the great thing is is that I already had skills. I already knew how to, like, you know, hustle and sell things, and, I learned how to paint houses. I I did a bunch of things. So I was Financially self sufficient when I moved out, and it always gave me this sort of independent attitude that I don't have to work for the man. And I have to say, here it is, you know, all these years later. Part of what I do as a coach is, like, working with people who are super skilled at what they do, You know, who are experts and seasoned, but they're afraid to let go of the weekly paycheck or or their corporate affiliation.Marko [00:04:37]:They they know they're not getting paid what they're worth. They know they're being lighted. But they don't have that background that I have of, like, being able to...
Ofinno's founder Esmael Dinan and CEO Kavon Nasabzadeh join the Clause 8 podcast to tell Ofinno's unique story of succeeding in the patent monetization space and talk about its plans for the future. After spending years as an inventor at a large operating company, Esmael came to the conclusion that most such companies aren't good at obtaining valuable standard essential patents (SEPs) on their own. This spurred him to found Ofinno in 2011, an R&D lab that would obtain such patents. He almost quit after spending his savings and initially failing to find any buyer for Ofinno's patents. Instead, Ofinno went on to sell patents to companies like Samsung, Comcast, Huawei, and Honda. Ofinno recently joined Avanci's 5G Connected Vehicle licensing program and is executing on plans to start its own licensing programs in a wide variety of other technology areas, including next generation Wi-Fi, video compression, and semiconductors. Esmael and Kavon also discuss: Kavon joining Offino as its first in-house patent attorney and becoming CEO earlier this year How Ofinno structures its patent development program to obtain valuable patents And, much more!

In a brand new study in the Washington Post, the paper found that at least 41 American children lose at least one biological parent to gun violence a day. Pulitzer-finalist journalist and author John Woodrow Cox did a deep dive into the lives of some of those children left behind, including siblings Kaleigh (7) and Kavon (11), in his latest piece, "Orphaned by gun violence: Two kids, two shootings, two parents gone." John joined hosts Kelly and JJ to detail how this study came about, what life is like after losing a parent to gun violence, and what it means to know that "there [were] only 11 days in 2020 when The Post did not find a child whose parent had been shot and killed." What's up and welcome to the Fitness Business Foundations Podcast! Join me every episode where I bring on actual facility owners and specialty experts to share their story and insights to help you move your own journey forward.Today I am bringing you another facility owner to share their story and insights on how they built their business. So I am excited to introduce you to Kavon, Doug, and Josh and they own Functional Fitness VA.It was amazing to talk with them about how they built the business they have today, and share insights into how they are making their partnership work to grow their business. Check out this episode to learn the successes and failures they had along the way to improve your own business.More on today's guests:Doug:I’ve been in the personal training world since 1996. I’ve done everything from being a floor trainer at a box gym, managing a 35,000 square foot health club, in home private training and owning personal training studios.Kavon:I got into exercise because my older brother had huge biceps, and naturally I wanted those! So I started lifting weights at 12 years old and haven’t turned back since. How I turned that into a career as a personal trainer and now business owner was kind of an accident initially. Like a lot of trainers I was just working out regularly when some friends and coworkers started to ask me if I could help them workout. After fumbling my way through a bunch of workouts and just making them do what I did I started to find a groove. I geared my, until that time aimless, Community College path to fitness, got certified and then made it my full time job.Along the way I have worked in a retirement home as a fitness instructor, big commercial gym, in home, and now finally at my own studio where we do personal training and small classes. There have been plenty of bumps and bruises, but following my desire to help people Move Better and Get Stronger (shameless plug of our tagline), constantly working hard to build our business, and having amazing clients have kept us not only alive as a business but thriving.Josh:I have really always been an active person, and fitness has been a big part of ensuring I have the capacity to participate in as many things as I can. My enthusiasm is very contagious and I have a fairly mellow disposition that usually helps people feel at ease around me. This is something I fell into and genuine have enjoyed people able to impact people in a positive way.Where to connect with them:Website: http://www.functionalfitnessva.com/Want To Learn How Many Virtual Assistants You Can Afford Right Now To Scale Your Fitness Business? “Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.” When William Wordsworth said that, he was talking about the art created by poets like Kavon Cortez-Jones. Kavon is proud to say that his poetry is for everyone. He writes about tough issues but also about the sights and sounds of his city, seamlessly melting together a light, observational style with more difficult topics.

Kavon Cortez-Jones loves Milwaukee. The poet and lifelong resident calls the city the "Paris of the Midwest" in his new book, Club Noir. Cortez-Jones' debut release is bursting with references to local landmarks, area musicians, and beloved regional institutions. The majority of the book—which features works written between the ages of 18 and 21—comes from a place of love and appreciation, but through acknowledging some of the difficulties faced while growing up on Milwaukee's north side, some poems also indirectly shed a light on the city's issues with segregation. Host Tyler Maas caught up with the up-and-coming Milwaukee poet at Riverwest Public House. Cortez-Jones talked about his introduction to this often-overlooked art form, the upbringing and experiences that inform his work, and why he holds Milwaukee in such high regard. Oh, and they talk about Cheetos for a while, too.
