For years, readers (including my son Isaac) have been asking for Helmer's origin story — and now it's finally here. Not only will we get a brand-new full-length novel, but Green Ember fans can also also enjoy an action-adventure video game that brings the story to life in a whole new way! And get this: the game is designed to be family-friendly with no ads, no micro-transactions, and no creepy internet people. Just pure storytelling, adventure, and delight for our kids.In this conversation, Sam and Zach share the hospitable heart behind the project, the challenges of creating something this big, and some behind the scenes nuggets true fans of #rabbitswithswords won't want to miss. You'll hear about the creative process, the vision for the story and game, and what makes Helmer in the Dragon Tomb such a special addition to the Green Ember world we already love.Plus, there are over a dozen questions from actual kids ranging from banjos to shading techniques to mysteries and deep dives! We tried to make it rapid fire...but we had a lot to say.

Apple production is looking to be ahead of normal bloom time and production level. This is according to Jacob Franzen, farm manager at Ski-Hi Fruit Farm in Baraboo. He says despite the excess rain the state has been getting, they've been lucky to avoid severe flooding. Ski-Hi Fruit Farm, established in 1907 by AK Bassett, continues to thrive as a family-owned farm. Now in its third generation of ownership, the farm is owned by Bassett's granddaughter, Betty, who will be celebrating her 83rd birthday this September. Ski-Hi Fruit Farm is renowned for its diverse apple production, boasting 30 different varieties spread across 40 acres of orchard.  "Despite the challenges posed by recent weather conditions, we are optimistic about this year's crop,” explains Franzen. “Last year's drought significantly affected our yields, but the rain this year has been beneficial. Although we've faced increased fungal pressure, our trees have responded well to the moisture."  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I remember getting the knife.     It was near Christmas about 10 years ago and Leslie and I were zipping up a tiny suitcase before a beach trip with her grandparents and extended family. We weren't married and I was making a desperate last-second plea to stuff a 576-page novel called ‘The Corrections' by Jonathan Franzen into our bag. “It just won't fit,” Leslie said. “You have … 100 pages left? Want to leave it and read it when we're back?”     I did *not* want to do that.     The book was slipping under my skin—serrating my soul.     So I remember getting that knife.     The deep blasphemous pain I felt slicing the paperback spine and carving the last 100-ish pages off the book was far outweighed by the exquisite suite of pleasures I had slowly savoring it on the beach all week.     I had never read anything like ‘The Corrections'—with a clarity of character, wildly spinning plot, and unique three-dimensional *realness* that, page by page, twist by twist, left pits in my stomach, lumps in my throat, and tears in my eyes.     The book single-handedly elevated what I thought books could do.     I read ‘Freedom' (2010), ‘Purity' (2014), and Crossroads (2021) the same way—equal parts admiration, fascination, and with a psychologically-transporting feeling of living outside of myself.     Jonathan Franzen is one of the most successful, accomplished, and decorated writers in the world. He is a Fulbright Scholar, National Book Award Winner, Pulitzer Prize Finalist, PEN/Faulkner Finalist, 2x Oprah's Book Club Pick, voted to TIME's ‘100 Most Influential' list as well as gracing their cover as "Great American Novelist," and much, much more.     The NYT calls his books "masterpieces of American fiction," NYMag calls his books "works of total genius," and Chuck Klosterman writing in GQ says "Franzen is the most important fiction writer in America, and—if viewed from a distance—perhaps the only important one.”     Tall praise! But there is just nothing like a Jonathan Franzen novel and it was sheer delight going deep with the master of the deep to discuss writing advice, the magic of the written word, what heroes look like today, competing with David Foster Wallace, the best thing we can do for the climate, Jon's 3 most formative books, and much, much more…     Let's turn the page to Chapter 137 now…

It is the unlikely tale (some may say preposterous story) of a young German woman who moved to the United States in 1980 by herself, made friends and established a successful livestock farm, against all odds. I hope this book will appeal to women who have overcome great obstacles to establish their careers, as well as young women who might find encouragement to follow their dreams. Brigitte Franzen left Germany for a farm internship in Illinois, never expecting to stay. Yet, the bonds she formed and her love for American life led her to build her own farm, housing 5000 pigs. However, in 1998, the rise of mega hog farms forced her to close her doors forever. Undaunted, she pivoted to become a financial planner, drawing on her farming experiences to aid others. Amidst the pandemic, she penned "Have Pigs, Will Travel," sharing tales of her life, including pig deliveries across the US. Our conversation explores her writing journey, the challenges of publishing, her advocacy for balance, her non-vegan stance, and the heartbreaking loss of her farm, offering compelling reasons to dive into her book.
