It usually sounds logical. We tell ourselves it's selfish, unrealistic, or that the timing just isn't right. But deep down, we feel stuck because we're not taking action. And when that cycle continues long enough, we start believing we're just not someone who follows through. The way out of that cycle is action. Even before you “decide,” you move. You take one small step, and then another. Those steps reshape your identity and rebuild your self-trust. I also dive into how so many people are stuck in a life they never actually wanted, making the best of a situation they talked themselves into. It's not always a crisis—it's often a reconnection with who you really are.If you've been feeling like you're boxed into your life, this is your invitation to open the lid. Not for anyone else. If you find yourself torn between rationality and spirituality, science and mysticism, facts and belief; The Lectern's inaugural 8-week course will offer you a new lens through which to reflect on these dilemmas. Click here to enroll: https://lectern.teachable.com/p/einstein-and-spinoza-s-god1 “What does it really mean to be authentic, and can this virtue be meaningfully understood and measured across psychology and philosophy?” John Vervaeke, Gregg Henriques and Matthew Schaublin embark on a discussion covering the concept of authenticity. The discussion explores authenticity as one of the premier virtues of modernity, comparing it with autonomy, and tracing its roots through romanticism and existentialism, notably discussing Heidgegger and Kierkegaard. Greg introduces psychological perspectives and client-centered therapy influenced by Carl Rogers, while Matthew shares insights from his empirical research on dispositional authenticity carried out at the University of Chattanooga. The trio also touch on the tensions between self-identification and participation, self-alienation, cognitive fluency, and the societal quest for authenticity, proposing a nuanced and dynamic understanding of the true self. Gregg R. Henriques is an American psychologist. He is a professor for the Combined-Integrated Doctoral Program at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, US. Matthew Schaublin is a master's candidate in psychology at the University of Chattanooga, with a four-year research focus on authenticity. His work blends empirical psychology with philosophical and classical inquiry, investigating how dispositional authenticity is expressed and experienced. —- Notes: 0:00 Introduction to the Lectern 0:45 Exploring the Concept of Authenticity 3:30 Greg's Perspective on Authenticity 5:00 Matthew's Research on Dispositional Authenticity 9:00 Theoretical Foundations of Authenticity 12:30 Philosophical and Clinical Perspectives 24:30 Relational and Psychological Dimensions 36:30 The Evolution of Self-Definition in Modernity 38:00 The Greek Roots of Authenticity 39:30 Modeling Authenticity and Personality 43:15 Rationalization and Authenticity 44:45 Tensions in Authenticity: Identification vs. Participation 49:00 The SAFE Model of Authenticity 55:00 Empirical Studies on Authenticity and Agency 1:06:30 Key Takeaways and Future Directions —-- Connect with a community dedicated to self-discovery and purpose, and gain deeper insights by joining our Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/johnvervaeke The Vervaeke Foundation is committed to advancing the scientific pursuit of wisdom and creating a significant impact on the world. The recent removal of information about Black, Indigenous, and female military personnel from the Arlington National Cemetery's website exemplifies how cancel culture intersects with broader societal dynamics, particularly in the context of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Under directives from the Department of Defense, pages highlighting notable veterans, such as Colin Powell, Jackie Roberson and members of the Tuskegee Airmen were deleted. These actions align with executive orders targeting DEI efforts in federal agencies, raising concerns about historical erasure and its implications for marginalized groups. This form of cancel culture—removing or altering narratives—reflects a modern-day example of erasure as a defense mechanism. Psychoanalytic theory offers insights into this phenomenon, particularly through concepts like repression and the “return of the repressed.” Erasure can be seen as a defense against confronting uncomfortable truths about systemic inequities or historical injustices. By eliminating these narratives from public platforms, institutions may unconsciously attempt to suppress collective guilt or discomfort. However, Freud's theory suggests that repressed material often resurfaces in unintended ways, potentially fueling collective anger or demands for accountability. Other psychoanalytic defenses also play a role in cancel culture. Projection involves attributing one's own insecurities or biases onto others, which can manifest in public condemnation of individuals or groups perceived as embodying those traits. Rationalization allows individuals or institutions to justify their actions—such as removing historical content—under the guise of compliance with executive orders or policy changes. Displacement, another mechanism, shifts focus from systemic issues (e.g., structural racism) to surface-level actions like website edits, thereby avoiding deeper engagement with societal problems. Cancel culture extends beyond institutional actions to broader societal trends. Modern examples include public figures like Andrew Cuomo and Chris Brown navigating cancellations and subsequent comebacks. These cases highlight how cancel culture can sometimes lose its potency over time, especially when individuals retain strong support bases. Social media platforms have also relaxed moderation policies, allowing previously banned accounts to return, which reflects shifting attitudes toward cancel practices. Ultimately, understanding cancel culture through psychoanalytic mechanisms reveals its complex interplay between societal norms and individual psychology. Erasure as a defense may temporarily shield institutions from scrutiny but risks perpetuating cycles of repression and backlash. Addressing these dynamics requires fostering empathy and critical dialogue to prevent harmful patterns of exclusion and suppression. Learn more about your ad choices. What's the cure for fear? Fearlessness? Avoidance? Rationalization? The answer is…none of the above. Fear is something we all experience, and even though it dresses itself up as different things (anger, diminishing or attacking ourselves), the same thing happens. When we're afraid, we make an enemy of everyone - even ourselves. We become internally gridlocked so we can't problem-solve. We fall into whatever reactive pattern we learned early on to cope with our fears. Thankfully, there is a better remedy which we all possess. The only true solution for fear is presence. We have to locate ourselves within the fear and move it through our bodies with something as simple as wiggling the body a bit. What are some simple fear-melters that will allow us to not be ruled by fear? How do we create even the tiniest doorway to presence? In this episode, we talk about simple but profound tools for shifting from fear into flow. Things You'll Learn In This Episode -How fear works Why does fear incapacitate us internally and why do we get so tripped up when we're afraid? -From gridlocked to “goldfish” Fear has a way of internally incapacitating us. What simple exercises can we use to interrupt this pattern? -How to befriend yourself through fear When we are fearful, we tend to abandon ourselves and disconnect from others. How do we use presence to be softer towards ourselves and create doorways to connection? What if society's outcasts held the keys to profound moral insights? Join us as we unpack the incredible legacy of Reb Aryeh Levine, a tzaddik renowned for extending compassion and hope to those languishing in Eretz Yisrael's prisons. Through gripping stories, we reveal how Reb Aryeh's encounters with some of the most marginalized individuals illuminate the power of redemption and the perplexing nature of human rationalization—even in the face of attempted manslaughter. Witness the shaking moment when Reb Aryeh confronted a prisoner's chilling justification for violence, challenging us to explore the fragile line between morality and the self-serving narratives we spin. The echoes of Avram Avinu's interactions with Avimelech remind us of how easily societal norms can sway without the anchor of spiritual discipline. As we discuss the intricate balance between moral integrity and the seductive pull of rationalization, this episode invites introspection on the role of divine guidance in our ethical compass. By reflecting on these timeless lessons, we urge listeners to scrutinize the moral frameworks that guide their lives in an ever-evolving world. This journey challenges us to see beyond initial reactions, diving into the defense mechanisms—denial, projection, rationalization, displacement, and dehumanization—that often emerge when we confront intense suffering. Today, we'll explore these psychological shields, understanding how they protect our comfort yet distance us from true empathy and responsibility. Denial and Projection: Shielding Ourselves from Empathy Our journey begins with denial, the instinctive reaction to look away from suffering, which keeps us comfortable but disconnected. Projection takes this a step further, transforming our discomfort into judgments about those in poverty. Confronting these reactions asks us to drop our defenses and see others' suffering without bias or blame. Rationalization and Displacement: Justifying Inaction Rationalization allows us to intellectualize poverty, distancing ourselves by framing it as inevitable or deserved. Displacement shifts frustration away from self-responsibility, turning critique onto charities or social systems rather than our own potential to help. Recognizing these patterns enables us to soften our stance, moving towards real compassion. Dehumanization and Compassionate Detachment In its harshest form, dehumanization strips others of dignity, making it easier to ignore suffering. True empathy requires compassionate detachment—the ability to witness hardship without losing our emotional balance. Through practices like self-reflection and meditation, we expand our capacity to feel without overwhelm, enabling thoughtful, authentic responses. Bridging the Gap: From Passive Empathy to Active Compassion Ultimately, confronting these mechanisms reveals a path toward compassionate action. As we dissolve the “us vs. them” mentality, we unlock our ability to contribute meaningfully, responding to suffering with empathy that inspires action. This journey leads us to a shared humanity that calls us to lift others up, creating tangible change and connection.
Dr. David Alleman first created his Six Lessons Approach for vital teeth, but the same conservative principles can benefit endodontically treated teeth too. Compared to traditional techniques for retention and bonding, the advanced adhesive and stress-reducing techniques of biomimetic dentistry are better suited for treating non-vital teeth, which are more brittle and susceptible to cracking than fully hydrated teeth with healthy pulps. This episode outlines how biomimetic techniques approach endodontically treated teeth differently and the research that supports these protocols.Articles referenced in this episode:Kishen A., Vedantam S. ———— Garth Heckman The David Alliance TDAgiantslayer@gmail.com BAM - watch them every Tuesday night on our Facebook page. INTRO: What is the most common sin in man? Lust? Lust for power? Pride? Its actually none of these… but so common it is overlooked. You do it, I do it, we all do it… So we should probably know what it is… right? Health Insurance Follies: (1) Blue Shield California twice refused to pay $2,700 emergency-room claims by Rosalinda Miran- Ramirez, concluding that it was not a "reasonable" decision for her to go to the ER that morning that she awoke to a shirt saturated with blood from what turned out the be a breast tumor. Only after a KPIX-TV reporter intervened in September did Blue Shield pay the claim. (2) National Women's Law Center found that the laws of eight states permit insurance companies to deny health coverage to a battered spouse (as a "pre-existing condition," since batterers tend to be recidivists), according to a September report by Kaiser Health News. [KPIX-TV, 9-25-09] [MSNBC, 10-7-09] Garth's note: I am sure that being Hispanic the Insurer thought it was a clear Cut case of spousal abuse. The insurance agency probably justified their Actions because that is the way it always is (in there minds) So what is the most common sin of man? Rationalization! We can rationalize anything. Rationalize Satan can sound very reasonable, but he is never reliable. Gary Zarlingo Its not a baby, its a fetus, its not a fetus its just tissue, its not tissue its about a woman's reproductive rights… and by that we mean a health issue… Or back to step one… its Murder. Jeremiah 17:9 " The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? What does deceitful mean? It means it can twist logic to get away with anything… rationalization! Morris Siegel, the owner of a small Kosher New York deli, was being questioned by an IRS agent about his tax return. He had reported a net profit of $60,000 for the year. Why dont you people leave me alone? the deli owner said. I work like a dog, everyone in my family helps out, the place is only closed three days a year. And you want to know how I made $60,000? Its not your income that bothers us, the agent said. Its these business travel deductions of $125,000. You listed ten trips to Israel for you and your wife. Oh, that? the owner said smiling. Well....we also deliver. [haruth.com]. The problem with rationalization is we can rationalize ourselves right out of the presence of God… and even then rationalize why he is no longer felt in our presence.

What is it that we are hungry for in this world? So many of the writings of the fathers can be reduced to this very question. What is the deepest desire of our hearts? What have we been created for and what satisfies the sense of incompleteness or the strange feeling of nostalgia within us? Because we have been created for God and find in Him our truest identity, we are going to experience ourselves as strangers in a strange world. We are made like everyone else and experience internal and external pressures to pursue what the world deems legitimate and of value. In the process, any thought of the future or the remembrance of God slips out of our minds. We become slaves not only to our bellies but to everything that we consume in an unthinking fashion. Abstemiousness and simplicity are not about lack but rather fullness. We must attend to the very real needs of the flesh but only as much as is required - and sometimes less. When we lose sight of God, our internal world is driven by anxiety and fear. We seek for security and to protect ourselves from want. What we find in the fathers, however, is not a starving of themselves, but rather the starving of the demons and what they nourish themselves upon. We engage in the ascetic life in order not to keep feeding the appetites and the passions that tie us to the world. This is no easy task. Rationalization and the illusion of joy and freedom keep us moving forward. However, these things (very much like rights and happiness) are very fragile. We think they are the norm but this is perhaps the great deception of our times. Our life has been given to us for repentance and we must not waste it. Life is a relationship; a constant turning towards God and who is constantly seeking us. Let us not grieve the Holy Spirit by seeking to quench our thirst for life and hunger for love other than in God. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:11:09 Bob Cihak, AZ: P. 118, para 2 00:17:20 Bob Cihak, AZ: Oops. Application rationalization is one of those thorny projects -- absolutely necessary and extremely challenging. It's absolutely necessary because millions of dollars are potentially being wasted on applications that are little used, if at all, while their mere existence increases the cyber attack surface. And it's extremely challenging because, even though leveraging data to understand which apps should be retired is relatively straightforward, actually severing those apps from the users who love them adds another layer of complexity. In this timely webinar, we'll first look at the science of application rationalization to find ripe targets, and then delve into human dynamics that can often stymie these critical initiatives. Rationalization is a problem for most of us, and if we examine the action closely enough, we find that it distances us from God. When we rationalize, we go against ourselves. We have internal conflict, and that brings frustration and discouragement. In this podcast, we hit the topic head on and suggest ways to recognize rationalization and avoid it. __________________________Do you have questions or comments? Please contact me: rtosguthorpe@gmail.comWant more info about my books and talks?Go to my website: https://www.russelltosguthorpe.com/Want to order a book? The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me. Today, our interdenominational Christian ministry serves the poor in primarily 17 countries throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. Thanks to our faithful donors, we are able to provide food, housing, healthcare, education, fresh water, emergency relief, micro-enterprise solutions and much more. We are proud to have fed millions of people and provided more than 15.7 billion dollars in aid. Our faith inspires us to be an organization built on compassion, and motivated by love. Our mission is to bring relief to the poorest of the poor in the countries where we serve. We strive to reflect God's unconditional love. It's a sacrificial love that embraces all people regardless of race or religion. We believe that we can show His love by serving the “least of these” on this earth as Christ challenged us to do in Matthew 25. We pray that by God's grace, and with your support, we can continue to bring relief to the suffering and hope to the hopeless. --------------------------------------------------------
Paul and Randy review the Iowa State game and wonder why anyone would willingly head slap a resting tiger and lion? After discussing A&M's follies and the impossible permutations of the Big 12 tie breakers, it's on to Texas Tech. Like many in Longhorn nation they're fed up with Tech's combination of posturing and whining before the final showdown in Austin. What Tech team will we see? We're not sure.
