Wally Ashby is a Patrol Sergeant with the Arcadia Police Department and a proud graduate from Rio Hondo Prep in 1993. Back when he was a Senior at Prep, Wally coached me and my 2nd grade teammates on the Gators in Kare Youth League. The first time I ever went to a Rio football game was to watch Coach Wally on the gridiron. We chat about the impact on KYL kids when they go watch their assistant coaches play for Rio Hondo and then dream about following in their footsteps. Wally has also been a high school basketball coach with successful stops at St Lucy's and Bishop Amat as well as La Salle where he currently coaches. Back when I was in 2nd grade, I wanted to wear the Rio Hondo Prep uniform someday just like Coach Wally. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/a-charge-to-keep/message

Kyl, a good friend of mine, interviewed me. You can look him up on kylreber.com.au. Also, martialartsmedia.com/145.I had the pleasure of having Kyl on our podcast. By the way, I was looking at it. In episode 145, we were talking about him having 370 students. I know that number's almost up to 500 now. They are booming, to put it mildly. Anyway, go have a listen to that if you haven't yet.For this episode, I really wanted to feature it because I got to tell you. I've been trying to record a podcast where I tell a bit of my story and just background where I came from, how this all got together, and I've given the pieces and inside of this over the years. I just had a look. We had episode 150, and I actually started this podcast in 2016, July of 2016.I'm probably in the race for the longest-going podcast with the least amount of episodes, but 150 awesome episodes it has been, and I'm going to continue to do this for a while. Anyway, I've really wanted to have an in-depth– about my story, and I tried to record it a couple of times solo by myself, and I've got to say, it felt weird.I did it about three times, and I deleted it every time. Then, I got on Kyl's podcast, and Kyl gave me 10 questions just to prepare for the podcast. I did that, and I thought it was going to be enough, but Kyl's questioning technique was really solid and in-depth. Every time I answered, he dug a little deeper and dug a little deeper.I've got to be honest. I probably spoke about things that I maybe just haven't shared over the years. Nothing too serious, but just things that I've buried in my past and let go. But Kyl did a really good job of unpacking all the details about me and asking a lot of questions. So, this podcast is going to be a bit longer.I highly recommend you check out Kyl Reber's podcast. I will have all the links for that at martialartsmedia.com/150. That's it for me. I hope you enjoy...
Greg Bolinger was one of the original founders of the Glendora Gators in Kare Youth League. He was also a member of two championship teams at Rio Hondo Prep in 1977 and 1979. Mr Bolinger was my first Leader in KYL back when I joined the program in 2nd grade. We reflect on some great memories at Wingate Park and his playing days at RHP. I attended my first Rio football game for a Gator team Outing as has become a tradition for many clubs over the years. Mr Bolinger has a deep connection to Rio Hondo Football. His son Clark is the play by play broadcaster on the NFHS Network, his daughter Darcy is the Cheerleading Coach, and his late father-in-law was the legendary Coach Randall Johnson. Greg Bolinger also made one of the biggest tackles in RHP Football history in the 1977 Title Game. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/a-charge-to-keep/message
Gary Shintaku was my Leader for most of my time in Kare Youth League. He coached me in 3rd-5th grade on the Gators and taught me more lessons than I can count. His attention to detail and ability to challenge our teams at such a young age absolutely prepared us all for bigger things down the road. Mr Shintaku played in the famous 1977 CIF Championship against Montclair Prep that is nearly unanimous as the greatest Rio Hondo Prep game ever played at Kare Field. We discuss his teammates from that incredible era of RHP Football and why the great tradition has stood the test of time. Gary Shintaku is one of many coaches I had in Kare Youth League that sparked my passion for Rio. Hundreds of kids from KYL over the years have gone on to play at RHP themselves after watching their heroes from the bleachers with wide eyes and eager anticipation. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/a-charge-to-keep/message
In this special edition of the podcast, we are promoting a big fundraising event for Kare Youth League that is just one month away. On April 20th, KYL is hosting a Topgolf Tournament and Awards Luncheon Fundraiser in Ontario, California. Topgolf is located right next to Ontario Airport for easy access to those interested from out of the area and is truly a fun environment for all who participate. Joining me today is Dan Kirby, one of the event coordinators as a Director of Development for Kare Youth League. We talk a little Rio Hondo Prep Football but mainly focus on the great opportunity to contribute to the best and most unique youth sports organization in the entire country. Today I am interviewing one of our great clients, one of our members of our Partners community, Kyl Reber. Kyl is from Brisbane. Chikara Martial Arts. You can look them up. And this interview is a bit of an extension from the Partners Intensive, which is an event that we hosted here on the Sunshine at the beginning of June. And Kyl was one of the featured speakers talking about the things that they are doing in the community. And what is mind-blowing for many other school owners is Kyl and his team, they're just pushing past the 370-member mark. And at this point, they've only focused on organic marketing strategies. It's all about community. It's all about giving back. It's all about the things that they do in their school and the impact that they make within their community. And so I wanted to get Kyl on and dig a bit deeper, talk a bit more about the strategies, what they do. And the great thing is I've been working with Kyl for a little more than six months, and I haven't really tapped into that backstory about how he got started on this journey when they opened their school, what got him into martial arts and so this was a great opportunity for that. Do you lean on marginalized people to educate you? In this week's episode, Dr. Kyl Myers (they/them, she/her) shares how their gender creative parenting has evolved over the years and that it can look different for each family. Learn how gender creative parenting gave her an opportunity to check in with herself about her own gender and gender expression. We also discuss some of the questions that you asked on Instagram! Are you trying to support friends in your life who have LGBTQ+ kids? Kyl talks about some of what's helped them, which might sound counterintuitive. We also talk about the emotional labor of internet trolls and some of the pressures of a large following on social media. Self-reflection questions: Do I have permission to share my kid's LGBTQ+ identity with others? If I don't have permission, how can I still seek out support without potentially outing them? If my friends have kids who are part of the LGBTQ+ community, do I make space for other topics? Do I know what they want to talk about? Do I unintentionally box people around me into binaries through my questions, statements, activities, and gifts? Do I give people around me the space to grow and explore their genders? Do I do the same for myself? Are there gender norms of my gender that I conform to that feel good for me? Can I give myself permission to enjoy what feels good? Do I learn from marginalized or underrepresented educators? Do I pay them and/or generally support their work? Resources, references, and full transcripts for each episode are available at www.allyshipisaverb.com Host Chris Angel (they/them) has a background in LGBTQ+ education, community organizing, and social work. Welcome back to my ~glamorous~ life!!!!! For this month we are focusing on our personal HEALTH. We are not talking colds, coughs, and fevers… we are talking with professionals and experts about vaginal, breast, and gut health. These are all things I had difficulty talking and asking about growing up. I felt these topics were too personal, uncomfortable and embarrassing to discuss. We are here to have those uncomfortable conversations to help educate you on these important topics. Today we are joined by Dr. Corrine, founder and designer of The Know Your Lemons Foundation. KYL is a global breast cancer nonprofit organization focused on early detection. Dr Corrine is here for our annual Breast Cancer Awareness episode. Dr. Corrine talks to us about The Know Your Lemons Foundation backstory. She does an incredible job educating us on the 12 symptoms of breast cancer, the importance of self exams, the breast anatomy and so much more!! This episode and foundation is incredibly important. What is gender creative parenting? It's a lot of things according to Dr. Kyl Myers, author of "Raising Them: Our Adventure in Gender Creative Parenting"; it's not a one-size-fits-all approach. Most broadly, it's a parenting philosophy that encourages kids to grow into their gender than be assigned one at birth. Dr. Myers explains what this looks like in every day, why some people chose to adopt this parenting style, how it can help eliminate gendered oppression later in life, and more. Role models, trailblazers, and leaders are sometimes felt to be in short supply in the queer community -- and in the genderqueer community in particular, it can feel like there are almost no non-cis leaders in day-to-day life. This week, El and Josie talk about their experiences (or lack thereof) with genderqueer leaders, and how to find that leadership in your own life. In lieu of leaders in your day-to-day life, here are some nonfiction books by non-binary authors that you can look up to! Those that El has read: What's Your Pronoun, by Dennis Baron - This is very academic and much more about the grammar of pronouns than gender expansive identities, but it is a great resource to throw at people who are still upset about the singular use of they/them Raising Them, by Kyl Myers - A memoir about gender creative parenting that follows an incredible family as they raise their child without an assigned gender. The author, Kyl, identifies as gender expansive and uses she/them, and has a PhD in gender studies - and I'm obsessed with them. Nonbinary: Memoirs of Gender and Identity, by Micah Rajunov - A memoir series written exclusively by older nonbinary folx aimed primarily at showing how long various nonbinary gender identities have existed. Gender Queer, by Maia Kobabe - A beautiful graphic memoir written by a non-binary author as e discover eir gender identity. TW for pap smears Some El hasn't read, but found from reputable sources and plans to read eventually. . . The Queer Art of Failure, by Jack J. Halberstam - This one is heavily academic, and focuses on willingness to fail and to lose one's way, to pursue difficult questions about complicity, and to find counterintuitive forms of resistance Beyond the Gender Binary, by Alok Vaid-Menon - ANOTHER graphic memoir! Transcending: Trans Buddhist Voices, by Kevin Manders - A series of memoirs of nonbinary Buddhists. On Tuesday, Arizona's governor appointed former Republican senator Jon Kyl to fill the US Senate seat vacated by the late John McCain. The appointment could spell even more government scrutiny for tech giants like Facebook and Google—even though Kyl has only committed to serving until the start of the next Congressional session in January, though he may stay through 2020.
