Star Wars - The Force Awakens In this podcast, Chris who has never (ever) seen a Star Wars film, interviews movie goers as they leave the cinema after watching Star Wars - The Force Awakens, just to see what all the fuss is about. It seems like he isn't the only one, there is even a BBC Radio 4 program called "I've never seen Star Wars." Read more about the radio series here. Star Wars - The Force Awakens - Thirty years after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, the galaxy faces a new threat from the evil Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and the First Order. When a defector named Finn crash-lands on a desert planet, he meets Rey (Daisy Ridley), a tough scavenger whose droid contains a top-secret map. Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas. It depicts the adventures of various characters "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away". The first film in the series, Star Wars (later subtitled Episode IV: A New Hope), was released on May 25, 1977 by 20th Century Fox and became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. It was followed by the similarly successful sequels The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983); these three films constitute the original Star Wars trilogy. A prequel trilogy was later released between 1999 and 2005, which received a more mixed reaction from critics and fans, compared to the original trilogy. All six films were nominated for or won Academy Awards, and were commercial successes, with a combined box office revenue of $4.38 billion, making Star Wars the fifth-highest-grossing film series. The series has spawned an extensive media franchise—the Star Wars expanded universe—including books, television series, computer and video games, and comic books, resulting in significant development of the series's fictional universe. Star Wars also holds a Guinness World Records title for the "Most successful film merchandising franchise." In 2012, the total value of the Star Wars franchise was estimated at USD $30.7 billion, including box-office receipts as well as profits from their video games and DVD sales. In 2012, The Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm for $4.06 billion and announced three new Star Wars films; the first film of that trilogy, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was released on December 18, 2015. 20th Century Fox retains the physical distribution rights to the first two Star Wars trilogies, owning permanent rights for the original 1977 film and holding the rights to Episodes I–III, V and VI until May 2020. The Walt Disney Studios owns digital distribution rights to all the Star Wars films, excluding A New Hope. Talking about films requires specific vocabulary so check out this quiz which will show you how to use new words in the right context.

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and BJ discuss Star Wars Episode VIII The Last Jedi. Rey (Daisey Ridley) trains in the ways of the Force with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) while Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) continues to throw Dark Side temper tantrums. Rian Johnson writes and directs this controversial installment of the Skywalker Saga. There is a lot of plot at the expense of character development. At times, the screenplay is a bit too cute and smarmy. Still, we get a solid starfighter sequence at the beginning, a great Yoda scene, and few compelling plot twists. Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and BJ and Thrasher discuss Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens. An orphan (Daisy Ridley) and a former stormtrooper (John Boyega) team up with Han Solo (Harrison Ford) to try and convert Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) back to the Light Side of the Force. Released a mere three years after Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, director J.J. Abrams sets up a zippy adventure introducing new characters and returning favorites in a plot that's highly reminiscent of Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope. Acting and special effects are good, but the ending's the worst kind of tease. Much like Abrams' first Star Trek feature, the most exciting thing about it is the promise it brings to the future of the franchise. Here we go! ///// > ///// Today’s movie is STAR WARS: EPISODE IX - THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, the final installment in the recently coined Skywalker Saga, directed by J.J. Abrams, and written for the screen in collaboration with Chris Terrio, based on a story by Derek Connolly, Colin Trevorrow, and Kathleen Kennedy, based on the characters and universe created by George Lucas. Following the events of THE LAST JEDI, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) discovers the path to the hidden Sith world of Exegol, where he also learns that Emporer Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) is still alive and wants Rey (Daisy Ridley) dead. Now the Resistance must face this new threat, before Palpatine conquers the entire galaxy. No spoilers. Before we start talking about today’s movie, I want to walk through the sordid history of the Star Wars film franchise, particular with the naming of this nine movie film series the Skywalker Saga. My first taste of Star Wars films was watching RETURN OF THE JEDI on television, having been far too young to have seen the films in theaters. I was absolutely entranced by the Ewoks and thought the lightsabers were pretty cool. I also knew that my peers had quite a few of the toys, which became a sort of status symbol amongst us. I think I was more into G.I. Joe and Transformers at the time, but I definitely dug Star Wars, and when it became available, I bought the trilogy on VHS for a lot more than I should have paid. I also read quite a few of the extended universe novels and comic books, which my friend had, including the incredible Timothy Zahn trilogy currently being reworked into the new canon. I started out knowing way less than my friends, and through a lot of reading, came to know more about that galaxy far, far away. I might have been too young for the original trilogy, but I was definitely old enough to know the hype was so real in 1999 when THE PHANTOM MENACE was finally coming to theaters, sixteen years after the last film. My friend group was mostly nerd, or at least nerd-friendly, so we got our tickets for the midnight showing, got all sorts of liquored up, then headed to see the film. And, as we all know by now, it didn’t live up to expectations. I don’t think it could have. The special effects were incredible, but the story lacked something important, and also included the overly-maligned Jar Jar Binks, who became the target for this hype backlash. By the time 2005’s REVENGE OF THE SITH had graced theaters, the fanbase had reached new levels of toxicity, and the films quietly disappeared as Lucasfilm went into production for THE CLONE WARS animated series. It wasn’t until my daughter started getting into Star Wars that our family went back to view the first two trilogies, which was well after Lucasfilm was sold to Disney for $4 billion. Subsequent viewings made the original trilogy seem a lot less good and the prequel trilogy to seem a lot better than it had been received. One Movie Spawn and I began working our way through THE CLONE WARS, along with a whole new generation of Star Wars enthusiasts finding more affinities with Ahsoka and Anakin. It also filled in a lot of the gaps between Episode II and Episode III, both in terms of plot and character development. So, when Disney announced they were bringing J.J. Abrams on board to reboot the franchise, I was stoked. THE RISE OF SKYWALKER feels like what happens when a franchise tries too hard to safely cater to its fans. Whatever criticisms there might be of the first two trilogies, George Lucas did provide a singular vision for the characters and the story, building a universe out of the surprise success of A NEW HOPE, with the constant support and co-leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. However, in the wake of Lucas’ retirement, and the backlash from a subset of franchise fans, that vision has slowly gotten muddled in the past few years between the continuing saga films and the one-offs set before the original trilogy, and in the case of ROGUE ONE, right before the original trilogy. We should expect a few bumps in the road trying to rewrite canon, rather than just starting over. Even the pre-reboot canon had more than one instance of contradictions requiring clever retcon, a sign that the universe was growing much too fast for its creators. All the toxic fans came out of the woodwork again, picking apart the plot of THE FORCE AWAKENS, then the absolutely bizarre fascination with tearing down Kelly Marie Tran’s portrayal of Rose Tico in THE LAST JEDI. With each bit of criticism, the franchise seems to be constantly overcorrecting. Critically speaking, the new films have been well-received when they take chances (THE FORCE AWAKENS, ROGUE ONE, THE LAST JEDI), and not as well received when corporate has come in to provide feedback and comments. SOLO had a major shake-up along the way, when Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were fired in favor of Ron Howard, with the result being muddled. And now, with THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, we see overcorrections all over the place, real or perceived. We have toxic fans to thank here again. It seemed like every bit of information about THE RISE OF SKYWALKER came with an avalanche of hot takes. I don’t mind speculation, especially with teaser information, but toxic fans have a way of turning speculation into fact, then forcing everyone to pick a side, and lambasting anyone who doesn’t choose their side. I still can’t believe folks thought there was a beef between Johnson and Abrams, and that they would use $200M movies to wage it, but it happened. The coverage in the wake of THE RISE OF SKYWALKER has already started with the “IS STAR WARS OVER?!” messaging, and frankly, I’m getting tired of it. So, to be safe, it looks like Lucasfilm brought in a team of writers, to try and make everyone happy, and not really succeeding anywhere in the process. The story appears to be a collaboration between Abrams, Terrio, Connolly, and Trevorrow, and it really shows in THE RISE OF SKYWALKER. Connolly and Trevorrow are no strangers to franchises, having successfully, in a matter of speaking, rebooted the Jurassic Park franchise with the current Jurassic World trilogy. THE RISE OF SKYWALKER contains a lot of iconic shots, similar to the Jurassic Park franchise. And those iconic moments look really great in the screen, but the connective tissue between those shots is, at best, a mixed bag. Everything is played pretty safe, and as such, doesn’t really surprise. The question is why? How can an iconic franchise fizzle out in such spectacular fashion? Well, first, it was an impossible task, told over too many years to be effective. Lucas’ career appears to have been one of fascination, moving between his two major franchises, Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Franchises, as we saw more than once last year, require consistency to stay viable, and having ten to sixteen year gaps between trilogies is ineffective to maintain momentum. I wonder how much better these stories may have been without the massive gaps. And I’ll just say here that “The Mandalorian” gives me a great deal of hope for the future of the franchise. The other major factor is the storytelling approach. The trilogies have acted as the backbone for the franchise, with the rest of the canon being built off that backbone. By contrast, the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not just in consistency, kicking up to four films a year soon, but also in their crossover approach for building their backbone. All the character development we need for Marvel characters happens inside their individual films, so we can focus on the story almost exclusively in the crossover films. THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, having no other real development for its characters outside of the canon novels, ends up having to do character development, find the iconic shots, and close out a massive nine-film space opera story in one film. Much more story was needed before this film to make it effective on the screen for franchise fans. STAR WARS: EPISODE IX - THE RISE OF SKYWALKER is a lackluster ending to a nine-movie saga, which may either lead to some deep introspection for the franchise, or perhaps releases the franchise from the three trilogy burden initially envisioned by George Lucas. Struggling to do too much with the final film, Abrams & Terrio (along with Connolly, Trevorrow, and Kennedy) attempt to please everyone, and end up with mixed results. Where it lacks in story, however, it makes up for somewhat in Lucasfilm’s commitment to special effects and gripping action scenes, along with more than a few iconic shots set in the beauty of space. Hardcore Star Wars fans have already seen the film, possibly more than once, and will likely have mixed feelings. Everyone else, especially those without franchise expectations, will find a visually appealing film that is still ultimately entertaining at its core. And much like the prequel trilogies, I suspect this reboot trilogy may age better over time. Rotten Tomatoes: 55% Metacritic: 54 One Movie Punch: 6.5/10 STAR WARS: EPISODE IX - THE RISE OF SKYWALKER (2019) is rated PG-13 and is currently playing intheaters.
The Emperor Strikes Back! Zombie Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) steps from the shadows with secrets that could force last Jedi Rey (Daisy Ridley) to turn to the Dark Side and bad boy Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). But General Leia (Carrie Fisher) is committed to using every last ounce of her Old War star power to squash this Final Order, and pave the way for The Rise of Skywalker. Find out how much resistance Arnie, Jakob, and Stuart put up for the ninth and final episode in the Star Wars saga in when you download this massive podcast. Listen Now!
The Rise of Skywalker takes place sometime after the events of The Last Jedi. Rey (Daisy Ridley) has been in training with General Leia (Carrie Fisher) on how to be an elite Jedi. She ends up abruptly leaving so that she and her merry gang of Resistance fighters can hop around the galaxy. They're looking for a Wayfinder crystal that is the key to finding the planet called Exogol, where the Siths reside, led by the return of Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), who is somehow still alive. Obstacles abound, including First Order leader Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Ren is ostensibly seeking to help Palpatine return to power, trying to get his hands on the Wayfinder for himself, possibly to join forces with Palpatine to enact the Final Order to bring the galaxy to its knees. J.J. Abrams directs. John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Joonas Suotamo, Billy Dee Williams, Naomi Ackie, Keri Russell, Domhnall Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, Lupita Nyong'o, Kelly Marie Tran also appear
J.J. Abrams returns to Star Wars with The Rise of Skywalker, and to end a 9-film saga. For this go round, Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe (Oscar Isaac) have been tasked with locating a hidden planet that contains the key to bringing down the entirety of The First Order, now led by Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Still conflicted with his connection to Rey, Kylo – aka Ben Solo – struggles and pontificates on his place in this world, as Rey continues to force forward towards completing her journey and saving the galaxy. And yes, Rey and Kylo continue their back-and-forth psychic shenanigans about who is worth redemption, and who is truly pulling whom into the Dark Side. On this episode, we dive head-first into the final film in this epic series (for now), and specifically what we loved and loathed about this latest attempt to satisfy fans worldwide. Is it too safe? Does it wrap up all of those insane loose ends? Does Kylo care about Rey as more than just a frenemy, or would Finn be better suited? Also, what's up with all those cameos?! We have a lot to discuss, and limited time to do it, so this is one podcast you do NOT want to miss! Find more information on the episode HERE

Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
In the eighth (and penultimate) installment of our retrospective on the Star Wars saga, we take on the most divisive installment. That's right, folks. This week, we're talking Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi. Kerri Jones returns to the show to talk about how Johnson's film upends the franchise, its thought-provoking depiction of the Force, and the tantalizing possibility of Reylo. Strap in, Star Wars fans, because this episode probably won't please all of you. Then return for the final installment next month, as we finally discuss The Rise of Skywalker itself. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
Listeners to the show — or, really, anyone within earshot — already know how much of an affinity Rob has for the Star Wars saga. The intergalactic battles and "space opera" melodrama of the Skywalker family have been attracting audiences for more than 40 years. So the fact that the franchise has long ranked among Rob's personal favorites shouldn't be much of a surprise. Over more than 40 years, George Lucas's "galaxy far, far away" has spawned countless films, television series, novels, comic books, video games and assorted ancillary merchandise. But, while the saga's Disney overlords will certainly keep fresh content coming for many, many years (including original series on its upcoming Disney+ streaming services), 2019 does mark a definitive end to at least part of what we've all come to love about Star Wars. This December, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — the ninth "Episode" within the franchise centering on the lineage of Anakin Skywalker) — will bring a close to not just the sequel trilogy that began with the introduction of Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in 2015's The Force Awakens. The new film, featuring the return of director J.J. Abrams, will serve as the conclusion to the Skywalker story once and for all. As such, the film has been shrouded in mystery. Until now. At the recent Star Wars Celebration event in Chicago, Disney and Lucasfilm at long last unveiled the trailer (and, thusly, the title) of their follow-up to divisive 2017 release The Last Jedi. Clocking in at roughly two minutes, this first footage certainly doesn't spoil anything. But it does whet our appetites for what we may expect this December. Join us as we break down the title and trailer, exploring exactly what we may expect when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters later this year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adzYW5DZoWs SHOW NOTES Rob's Star Wars story: https://www.crookedtable.com/podcast-star-wars-story/ Our two-part The Force Awakens review: https://www.crookedtable.com/crooked-table-podcast-episode-17-a-long-time-ago/ https://www.crookedtable.com/crooked-table-podcast-episode-18-in-a-galaxy-far-far-away/ Rob's Rogue One review: https://www.crookedtable.com/rogue-one-star-wars-podcast/ Rob's Solo review: https://www.crookedtable.com/star-wars-solo-boba-fett-podcast-review/ Want to appear on a future episode of the Crooked Table Podcast? In our 70th episode we see an old cranky suddenly literate Jedi priest (Mark Hamill) send himself to exile for his special uncle relationship with Ren that Han Solo didn’t approve of. How the true Jedi ways and scripture led Luke to "dark impulsive decisions" that in turn caused his nephew to release suppressed rage and destroy his jedi brothel. Apparently, every jedi priest that gets registered as an offender hides and makes fish-lizard nuns take care of, but Luke just walks around and harasses animals to keep him nourished. Poor Rey just wants to be a jedi and forget about her crappy vagrant child hood and she gets absolutely no training except for the japanese man disney hired to teach to play fight with a round staff. All the while, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) chases down his mom General Slur (Carrie Fisher) to get back his drug money. Turns out she had all her drugs at her stash planet and she’ll live in space with no suit and fly to save her stash if Poe is near it. We also find that the dark side and Kylo’s darlside is led by a talking 11 foot tall Tapeworm (Andy Serkis) who is proud of his special manipulative relationship with Kylo and his ginger dirty British slave. Snoke will kill or make someone watch what he does to Kylo on a daily basis and it aint pretty and it definitely involves nipples thats why Rey was so grossed out. We also see Finn (John Boyega) get torn between two boyish looking girls, while he comes up with a plan on how to waddle his way out of this one. Sit back and strap in with the ambiguously skin colored token idiot to push a plot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), as he joins us in the suicide mission that is breaking down Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Ep. 70). Go back and listen to our previous episodes including our most recent, Justice League (Ep. 69), Thor: Ragnarok (Ep. 68), and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Ep. 67). Also be sure to listen to the other “great” movie series we have done: Planet of the Apes (Ep. 63-66), Transformers (Ep. 57-61), Pirates of the Caribbean (Ep. 52-56), Fast and the Furious (Ep. 44-51), X-Men (Ep. 33-43), Star Wars (Ep. 24-31), Harry Potter (Ep. 15-23), and MCU (Ep. 1-14 and 62, 67,68). It's been a little over a week since The Last Jedi was released! Join us as BB-N8 (Nathan Jesse), Samuel the Hutt (Sam Jesse), and The Bow Tie Jedi Guy (David Jesse) discuss the polarized opinions about the movie.First, we're taking a deeper look at this new version of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). The Jedi Master was nothing like we were expecting. Was it good? Bad? And what does that mean for the future of the Star Wars saga?Next, we're debating whether the whole "Reylo" idea is finally dead. There's no doubt that Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) had an intense connection through the Force. But does this mean that a romantic storyline is coming in Episode IX? And finally, we're starting our countdown to Solo! Is Disney holding back a trailer because they're nervous about what this movie has become? Was Ron Howard able to salvage the train wreck that Lord and Miller left behind?Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TatooineSonsLike us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TatooineSons/Subscribe to us on YouTube: http://bit.ly/2sQw3oyMay the Force be with you!

Is there more than just a Force connection between the protagonist and antagonist of the Sequel Trilogy? Finally, we give our craziest The Last Jedi predictions sure to go wrong! Is Luke Skywalker on Ach-To in order to train an army of Force-sensitive Jedi porgs?
