Most high achievers never look back and see how far they've come. They tend to focus on perfection and not wanting to let anyone down. Because of their outward focus on others - colleagues, customers, or employees - They often don't know how to be empathetic and tender with themselves.Empathy starts with self-awareness and self-care so leaders who want to achieve their goals would be wise to practice tenderness and empathy for themselves first. This kind of self-reflection and tenderness for self will help them be an effective and inspiring leader for others.Today, author and leadership coach Lauree Ostrofsky joins us to talk about self-empathy and owning your leadership style. Lauree shares how challenging and yet worthwhile self-empathy can be. We discuss the downside of empathy and how to balance focusing on others with caring for yourself. She talks about how to develop our sense of self so we don't fear reinvention, we can take better risks, and avoid unnecessary worry or anxiousness that doesn't serve us. To access the episode transcript, please search for the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.comKey Takeaways:Dig into your fears and discomforts. It may just be an opportunity that is outside your comfort zone and making you feel vulnerable. Fear is an opportunity. Make a list of compliments you receive as you receive them - we need the physical evidence of what we have accomplished and where we have been to see how we've gained the confidence we have now.Sometimes you have to give yourself space before you can give space to the other person to hear and empathize with what they're saying and needing. Own who you are without apology. You can invite people in and invite them to also own who they are. "There's a way to value people and value yourself at the same time, and it really takes understanding of yourself." — Lauree OstrofskyFrom Our Partner:SparkEffect partners with organizations to unlock the full potential of their greatest asset: their people. In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about managing the pressure to be an A student at work. Many of us felt really comfortable in school because we were given very clear instructions. The workplace, unfortunately, does not come with clear instructions, yet we cling to old habits for the illusion of emotional safety these habits bring us. My guest this week, Lauree Ostrofsky, helps introverts, A students and overthinkers to more confidently take their next leap. Here Lauree and I explore how deciding for ourselves what's good enough can help us manage perfectionism and begin to loosen the unrealistic standards we hold ourselves to so that we can do more of what is meaningful to us.About My GuestLauree helps career-minded introverts, overthinkers and A students clarify their next leap and feel more confident putting themselves out there. There is so much you bring already, that you've done already, that you are already. ”There is so much you bring already, that you've done already, that you are already, and recognizing that is so much more powerful than focusing on the next mountain and seeing how far it is and seeing what you've yet to learn. "It's doing what works for us in order to allow ourselves to move to the next place and to feel empowered and confident about that. I think fear is part of that. It's our relationship with fear that allows us to determine our own destinies." We are so excited to welcome Lauree Ostrofsky to the podcast! Lauree has been an integral part of Courtney's entrepreneurial journey over the last several years and so it only seems right and fitting that they talk today about fear and how it shows up when you're on the cusp of something life changing. Much of Lauree's current narrative begins with a devastating medical diagnosis. With candor, vulnerability, and honesty, Lauree shares the story of how her brain tumor helped her explore and work with her "A student" tendencies in a new way. Courtney and Lauree also dive into the linguistic complexities around courage, fear, and being brave. Lauree gifts listeners with strategies that she has utilized on her own journey, as well as in her professional coaching work, including how to speak kindly and softly to yourself in times of fear. Lauree and Courtney also explore the role of trusting one's self in overcoming fear and extend the ongoing offer of being your pep squad whenever you need a reminder of how awesome you are! Sharp eared listeners may hear a little noise in the background -- that is Courtney's elderly black lab Montana making her on-air debut! We see it as a gentle reminder that we keep it real here at Pragmatic Alchemy! Today in the Book Lounge, Tom & Karin discuss the book Big Magic with special guest Lauree Ostrofsky. Each week Book Insights creator and author of The 50 Classics Series Tom Butler-Bowdon and Memo'd Program Manager Karin Richey invite you to join their fun and casual conversation about the book of the week. Hear what they love it about, what they don't, how they rate it, and how it can advance your work and life. You'll learn why it was selected to be part of the curated list of Book Insights, and what's new with the book or the author currently. This week, Tom and Karin offer you insight on: *Lauree shares how getting cancer, changing careers, going to art school and upending her life helped her redefine her relationship with fear and unleash her creative potential. *Elizabeth Gilbert's theory on how ideas have a life of their own and find hosts to bring them into fruition. How to stay receptive! *The joy of creating for creation's sake and detaching from the need to succeed or achieve monetary gains from your creative ventures. She is also a coach, and communications consultant. http://www.simplyleap.com/ https://www.elizabethgilbert.com/magic-lessons/ What is the difference between Book Insights episodes and Book Lounge episodes? Book Insights are formal, structured summary, analysis and exploration of a bestselling nonfiction book. Each episode is read by a professional voice actor and will introduce a new title selected specifically for its value to your work and life. Book Lounge episodes are casual discussions about the book, the author, and anything else that comes along through the course of conversation. It's more of a broad chat about how the book relates to current, everyday life. Should I listen to both the Book Insight and the Book Lounge episode on the same book? Sure! Each episode works fine as a standalone piece, so no requirement to listen to both or to listen in any particular order, but we definitely recommend (and think you'll enjoy!) both. Think of it like reading a book and liking it so much you want to chat about it on the porch with a friend. That is the vibe at the Book Lounge. Like what you hear? Today I'm delighted to welcome the lovely and courageous Lauree Oftrofsky to the show!Lauree is a coach for the A+ type student. She helps people figure out how to actually enjoy the process instead of saving all the good feelings when the goal has been achieved. What a concept, right?!In the courage part, Lauree admits that right when she thought she had her life plan totally locked down (literally, hours before she planned to go into her job and QUIT), her world was turned upside down: the persistent ear infection that wouldn't go away actually wasn't an ear infection after all.It was a brain tumor. In the episode we dig into the wild and scary ride that followed, which includes brain surgery, lots of days recovering in the ICU and the unexpected yet powerful lesson that came from a little tube designed to drain fluid from her head. I was on the edge of my seat with this one, and I know you'll love it too! Then, in the Clarity portion, we're diving into Lauree's top tips for having fun on the way to our goals, rather than waiting to cross the finish line before celebrating.
We often think fear is designed to keep us safe. When you shift focus you may find it’s that very fear that keeps each of us from living out our dreams. Perhaps we misunderstand fear’s purpose and message. It’s uncomfortable to be in relationship with fear so we tend towards making choices that allow us to avoid fear altogether, that keep us safe (and playing small). The thing is, that our fears cloud our ability to enjoy the crap out of our lives. Fear and joy coexists simultaneously, constant companions. We don’t eventually become unscared. Instead, we learn to feel the fear and move forward anyway. In this discussion, Lauree Ostrofsky and I reflect on the power in vulnerability, possibility and community—that sometimes, we just need someone to be the first to be vulnerable to give us permission to do the same. We talk about laying groundwork for our dreams, seeding our visions, and about choosing our words and company wisely along the way. And we discuss the importance in viewing joy and pleasure as a practice—in choosing to feel it ourselves, in seeking it out in others. And, of course, we dive into the reality of fear as a guiding presence throughout our lives and how we keep it in its serviceable place. Quoted in the Episode: “What I learned from the brain tumor was that things are really scary and you don’t become unscared. You actually just deal with fear in a different way.” - Lauree Ostrofsky “If you’re not enjoying your life now, how will you ever enjoy it when you get the goal that you want to achieve? Enjoying your life is actually a muscle that you have to develop.” - Lauree Ostrofsky “If we can be present with the fear that’s in us, we can also be present with the joy. Because it’s likely you have multiple feelings going on at the same time.” - Lauree Ostrofsky “Luckily that happened because, otherwise, I would still be in that marriage. I would still be doing that job. And I would know that I was unhappy, but it was definitely safer. I was making all safe choices and I think I needed something big enough to wake myself up.” - Lauree Ostrofsky “If we don’t feel that there’s other people with us, then part of the fear is that we are all alone. So, this is beautiful because we’re really talking about how to make these leaps, how to reach our own audacious goals even when they’re intimidating. And a lot of it has to do with being with ourselves and finding community that we can also be with.” - Rebecca Wong Resources Referenced in this Episode: Joseph Campbell’s quote, “If the path before you is clear, you’re probably on someone else’s.” IFS (Internal Family Systems) model of therapy Where to find Lauree Ostrofsky: SimplyLeap.com Facebook Twitter Instagram If you're interested in working with Rebecca Wong, you can find out more about her services here: 1. Lauree Ostrofsky helps women who value structure and accountability get clearer on what they want to do in life and become more confident to start doing it. She is a speaker, coach and hugger (dig this!), and is the author of a memoir entitled "I'm scared & doing it anyway" and her latest "SIMPLY LEAP: Seven Lessons on Facing Fear and Enjoying the Crap out of Your Life." I was first introduced to Lauree via email. Like any normal person in this digital age, I did some internet sleuthing. And when I did, I instantly thought, “I so want to know this woman.” During our conversation, she opened up and shared her story of how she went from being a straight-A student and type-A personality to someone that felt completely out of control after a life changing event. In early 2004, Lauree had an MRI to determine the source of some inner ear issues she was experiencing. That was when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The news was completely unexpected. It made her question everything she knew about her life, her world, and having control of everything in and around it. In this episode, Lauree walks us through before, after and during her experience and tells us how she is going through life now. Her story is one of resilience. She helps us understand how we can be both serious and silly at the same time. As well as, remain structured and scared. She also shares how mantras helped her heal, regain focus, and clarity.Lauree is our kind of people! This is an inspiring interview that you absolutely should not miss.
