Episode 111 with Linda Yi. “My internal monologue is always asking, ‛Why does this seem so easy for other people but it's so hard for me?'” Linda Yi is a Sichuanese-American comic-artist, food entrepreneur, and mental health advocate based in New York.   She is the creator of Panda Cub Dtories, a weekly comic series about Chinese culture, Sichuan food, and living with ADHD. Panda Cub Stories has an engaged global audience of over 15,000 followers on Instagram — and has been featured in Today.com, Kaleidoscope Society, and BoredPanda. Linda is also the founder of Panda Cub Diner, a membership-based online cooking club and community space where she teaches Sichuan food lovers how to recreate their favorite dishes at home. As a self-taught cook, she specializes in making cooking accessible and fun.  Linda and I talk about some of the unique challenges many of us face when it comes to cooking, meal planning, shame, and executive dysfunction. She shares her incredible story of how lockdown and homesickness fueled her desire to learn to cook traditional Sichuan meals, and how teaching others has helped her to take care of herself. And we talk about how her comic characters have helped her process her own adult ADHD diagnosis and be kinder and gentler with herself. Grab a coffee or tea and pop in for Linda's free "Cooking Sichuanese with ADHD" webinar! One-part Sichuanese cooking class and one-part ADHD friendly cooking techniques, all garnished with Linda's illustrations. Episode 110 with Meredith Carder.  “One of the best things we can do for ourselves is to get support, rather than thinking ‛I should be able to do this.'” Meredith is an ADDCA-trained ADHD coach and one of my favorite Instagram creators.  As a true multi-passionate adult with ADHD, Meredith has gained varied experience over the last 20 years working in employee training and development as well as creating several small businesses.  In 2019 Meredith decided to pursue ADHD coaching after seeing the positive impact it had on both her life and on her daughter's life. Meredith prides herself in her ability to hold a supportive space for her clients and facilitate lasting connections in her groups.  We talk all about impulsivity and the “now/not now” relationship with time management. We also talk about curiosity and the love of learning, our mutual love of movie trailers, and how to unlearn perfectionism and take ourselves less seriously. Episode 108 with Robin Zheng. “My family always called me the absent-minded professor. I'd walk into a room and forget what I was doing, and I'd have to walk back to the room I came from in order to remember.” Trigger Warning: Talk about suicide and suicidal ideation. Dr. Zheng is an academic philosopher. She's originally from the U.S. but spent several years working in Singapore and currently lives in Scotland working as a Lecturer in Political Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. Her research and teaching focus on moral, social, and political philosophy with special emphasis on issues of gender, race, and class.  It was only very recently that Dr. Zheng's therapist suggested that she might have ADHD, and she's still in the midst of the long and drawn-out process of getting a formal diagnosis through the NHS (National Health Service).  Nevertheless, simply learning the truth about ADHD has already led to major improvements in her mental health. We talk about her experience with anxiety and depression in an academic setting.  She notes that she was particularly motivated to share her experiences on this podcast because she's come to realize that ADHD manifests in a diverse multitude of ways and each new personal story makes it possible for another person to feel that self-recognition and potentially start living a more flourishing life. Dr. Zheng and I also talk about mental health stigma especially in the Chinese-American community, as well as some of the barriers to understanding ADHD and neurodiversity within Chinese culture. Episode 98 with Sarah Wheeler. “I was like, Why do I have all these ambitions, yet so much incompetence? Like, I know I'm smart. Why can't I just get it together?” Sarah is a writer, educational psychologist, and neurodiversity trainer based in Oakland. I first discovered Sarah through her Substack newsletter Momspreading. She wrote a piece reflecting back on her adult ADHD diagnosis, and it was just so compelling and nuanced and thought-provoking and hilarious that I kind of started stalking her a little bit online after that. Thankfully, she agreed to sit down with me and talk about her own diagnosis journey and how she managed to spend 15 years studying and diagnosing ADHD in children without realizing she herself had ADHD.  We talk about how a diagnosis in adulthood can feel both profoundly life-changing and, at the same time, inconsequential. We also talk about internalized hyperactivity in girls and those good old-fashioned ADHD tangents and long-winded conversational curlicues for which more than a few of us are known.  And we talk about one of Sarah's favorite studies involving the Ariaal tribe of northern Kenya, and how environment and social factors can play an integral role in whether or not someone with ADHD thrives.  Website: sarahwheelerphd.com   Episode edited by E Podcast Productions Find the transcript of this episode at www.womenandadhd.com/transcripts   This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Episode 97 with Kalin Johnson. “When I was growing up, my mom used to ask, ‘Don't you ever get tired of thinking?' And I was like, ‘Yeah, but what am I going to do? Is there an alternative?'” Kalin is an American healthcare provider, mental health advocate, and entrepreneur. She shows high-achieving, neurodivergent individuals how to unmask their health and feel their best through concierge whole person care. As a licensed clinical pharmacist, functional medicine specialist, healthcare advocate, and neurodivergent mentor, Kalin bridges the gap between mental health and physical health through her professional and personal experience. After a year of struggling with extreme burnout and depression, she was diagnosed with ADHD, autism, and PTSD at the age of 33.  Contrary to some, she had always suspected she was autistic but she was shocked when her therapist first told her she suspected ADHD. Kalin had to unpack a lot of the overzealous coping mechanisms that had been in place since she was young to compensate for her mostly inattentive ADHD symptoms.   We discuss what it takes to curate a neurodivergent-affirming care team. We also discuss self-advocacy and finding the right medications for your treatment plan. And we chat about her experience coming out as queer versus her experience "coming out" as ADHD & autistic, and why the latter proved to be the more difficult experience for her. - - - - - Kalin will be hosting a live Q&A in the Women & ADHD online community on Sunday, August 21, where she will be giving an intro to ADHD medications, explaining the different types of popular ADHD medications, their classifications, and what symptoms they target. There's something else going on that's inhibiting that child from succeeding.” Diana is the founder and CEO of Parallel Learning. As early as 7 years old, Diana realized she was not progressing at the pace of her fellow classmates. Soon thereafter, she was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD.  Diana was fortunate enough to have the support to get the help she needed in order to thrive. As an adult, she realized that while 1 in every 5 students has a cognitive difference, support is confusing, expensive, and inefficient. Diana is now on a mission to make psycho-educational services widely available across the nation. As founder and CEO of Parallel, Diana is building the first tech-enabled, integrated care model for children with learning and thinking differences.  Diana & I talk all about the online assessment process for kids, which is a relatively new option for families and schools. We also talk about empowered learning and the importance of positive framing and teaching kids about the strengths of ADHD at an early age rather than simply diagnosing a disorder.  I loved getting the chance to sit down with Diana and hear her personal story and chat all about this incredible business she started and how much it has benefited my family's journey. ** If you are interested in learning more about how Parallel can help your child, please call 914.377.5655 or visit www.parallellearning.com. Episode 83 with Catherine Avery. “With neurodivergent folks, we need to recognize that if it's already working, don't try to fix it.” Catherine is an ADHD & productivity coach and the CEO of Productivity by Design. She believes that in order to be truly productive, you need to learn how to be intentionally unproductive.  Catherine coaches her clients through proven strategies that help them master their time, space, and information so they can be more productive, more profitable, and have more time to spend doing the things they love.  Catherine is a former “queen of clutter,” a recovering Type-A Wall Streeter, and a cancer survivor/thriver who was officially diagnosed with ADHD in her 50s.  We talk about her own deep dive into her “chemo brain” and brain fog, and how that ultimately led to her ADHD diagnosis. We also talk about the grief that occurs to many of us diagnosed later in life when looking back over our lives with this new lens. And we talk about burnout, how to lean into our natural biological rhythms of productivity, and knowing when to hit pause. And finally, we compare our crazy TMJ stories — and I rehash my own story about teeth grinding and vertigo! If you grind your teeth at night, you definitely want to stick around and hear more about our experiences. Episode 82 with KC Davis. “We work so much harder just to do the simple things everybody else can do automatically.” KC Davis is a licensed professional therapist, author, speaker, and the incredible maven behind the mental health platform Struggle Care. She is also the casual genius behind the TikTok account @domesticblisters, where her accessible advice on self-care, self-compassion, cleaning and organizational systems that actually work, has amassed nearly 1.5 million followers. KC's compassionate and practical approach to self and home care for those dealing with mental health, physical illness, and hard seasons of life has also been summarized in her book, “How to Keep House While Drowning.” The revamped, expanded version comes out tomorrow April 26, as does the audiobook read by the author. KC Davis began her therapy journey at 16 when she entered treatment for drug addiction and mental health issues. After getting sober she became a speaker and advocate for mental health and recovery. Professionally, KC has worked most of her career in the field of addiction in roles such a therapist, consultant, and executive director. She lives in Houston with her husband and two daughters.  KC and I talk all about how her TikTok audience convinced her to get an ADHD diagnosis and how the app is helping to change the face of what it looks like to be neurodivergent. We also talk about the shame and guilt so many of us feel around domesticity, and the reasons why neurodivergent brains can struggle to stay on top of cleaning and organizing. And we also talk about the cleaning strategies she created for her family that went viral and have changed the lives of so many women, myself included. Rebecca is a neurodiverse speaker, writer, and educator based outside of Melbourne, Australia. She is the CEO and founder of My Spirited Child, an advocacy hub that provides strategies and support to parents, carers and educators of neurodivergent children, and to neurodivergent adults themselves. She also co-founded the National PEKE Centre, a resource center for neurodivergent families with individualized treatment plans, therapies and services located in Cranbourne, Australia. The center is an absolute dream for anyone who finds the diagnosis and treatment process to be overwhelming and confusing (which is basically all of us, right?).  Rebecca and I talk all about our own difficulties in school as undiagnosed children, how the education system fails neurodiverse children, which is ultimately what led her to start advocating for her own neurodiverse kids. We also discuss why so many of us think we're failures even though we're often achieving at Energizer-bunny levels. We also talk about demand avoidance in relation to Autism and ADHD, and why it's chronically misunderstood and misdiagnosed in so many neurodivergent children. And Rebecca gives one of my favorite answers yet for renaming ADHD, so stick with us to hear that later in this episode! Rebecca is doing amazing work in Australia — she was recently a speaker at the Victorian ADHD Conference, which was a massive success. Dr. Anhalt is a psychoanalytic psychologist, emotional fitness consultant, and the co-founder of Coa, an online gym for mental health.  Emily was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 7, and her doctoral dissertation (inspired by her own life) was on ADHD and success beyond medication. We talk all about how an early diagnosis shaped her life and academic pursuits, how her ADHD contributed to her success, and her ongoing efforts to reframe how we treat and talk about mental health. Emily describes her research into the 7 traits of emotional fitness, and how Coa differs from traditional coaching or group therapy. Episode 69 with Julia Edwards. "Even if I'm by myself, I can't relax because the guilt creeps in. ADHD comes with a very lovely side of guilt and shame." Julia is a therapist and certified ADHD-Clinical Services Provider who was diagnosed with ADHD in college after immigrating to the US from El Salvador. As a specialist who also has this diagnosis, she uniquely understands the innumerable ways that this neuro-developmental condition can impact every area of a person's life as well as those around them. She specializes in helping adults who are coping with trauma, shame, anxiety, and low self-esteem as a result of undiagnosed and untreated ADHD. We talk about her history as a competitive swimmer in El Salvador, as well as how we tend to push ourselves to the point of exhaustion and burnout. She also talks about the emotional toll of COVID, and the complex trauma when you become injured and have ADHD. Julia also co-manages the Women & ADHD online community and premium community, where she offers weekly office hours for members who have questions about ADHD or want 1-on-1 expert advice, and she also hosts a monthly live Q&A in the premium community on various topics relevant to our ADHD experiences.  This month's “Q&A with Jules” is on January 30, and focuses on the love/hate relationship our ADHD brains have with new year's resolutions and radical change — and what we can do instead. Episode 68 with Alex Gilbert. "The most important thing, whether you're officially diagnosed or not, is advocating for yourself." Alex was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD at the age of 8. She also knew by the age of 16 that she wanted to go into business for herself and help others who might have been struggling with learning disabilities and/or ADHD. After spending years working in leadership development, she has finally pursued her dream and now runs a consulting and coaching business that helps other adults with learning disabilities who have been struggling in their careers.  Alex helps others navigate their day-to-day workloads so that they feel supported and are able to reach their highest potential, and she offers free 30-min Declutter Your Mind sessions. Her biggest goal in creating Cape-Able Consulting is to change the stigma surrounding learning disabilities and ADHD by reminding people how “cape-able” they are. We talk about her early diagnosis and some of the stigmas and stereotypes she encountered while having the label of a learning disability, and how that impacted her education journey as well as her perception of herself. We also discuss advocating for yourself in the workplace, whether and when to disclose a learning disability, and why there has been such a recent increase in adult diagnoses of ADHD. Karis Yves Knight is a visual artist based in Scotland. Her ongoing project called “The V.O.W (The Voice of Women)” came about in an effort to showcase how diverse and multifaceted we are as women. She interviews and gets to know her subjects and encourages them to offer their unique perspectives and life experiences, and then she also paints them to accompany their stories. It's a beautiful project and endeavor and it's incredible to think she's only 24. Karis and I talk all about how isolated and radicalized we've become as a society and how important it is for projects like these that highlight our similarities and how good it is for our souls to empathize and feel connected others. We also talk about the concept of masking and ADHD, and how often we are told that we're too much, so we pull back on our natural impulses. We also discuss hyperfocus and burnout, especially around gigantic projects like her art shows. Episode 65 with Dr. Sam Hiew "Growing up in an Asian country, we didn't talk about mental health. If you're struggling, you need to suck it up and get over it." Dr. Hiew is the Director of ADHD Girls in the UK, and has an extensive background in communications and cancer research. Raised in Malaysia, she won the Malaysian Prime Minister's scholarship to study her postgraduate degree in the UK, where she now resides. Having worked in 16 different business sectors over the years, she spent the last decade as a communications consultant helping doctors, scientists and data experts convey the value of their research to a wider audience through written and video media. She was diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year at the age of 40, and she's currently pursuing an ASD diagnosis. Her diagnosis (and her daughter's diagnosis) led her to develop ADHD Girls, where she operates as a vocal advocate and mentor for girls and women with ADHD, helping them understand their brains and learn to thrive in education and workplace systems. We talk all about her experiences navigating academia both in Malaysia and in the UK, and we talk about motherhood in general and how she's now able to advocate for her daughter within the school system. Dr. Hiew is a fantastic resource and a real champion for women and girls and I was so pleased to get this chance to find out more about her own journey. Enjoy! Raegan is 25 years old and lives in Denver. She works for the political advocacy non-profit New Era Colorado. Raegan reached out to me because she is a listener of the podcast, but noted that a lot of my guests are in their 30s or older and she felt she could offer an interesting perspective on what it's like to be facing ADHD in early adulthood at this particular moment in history. Raegan was born in 1996, so she is literally right on dividing line between Millennial & Gen Z, and we talk about the various impressions and stigmas that were held around ADHD and mental health as she was growing up and how they might differ from older generations. We also talk about what it's been like to get this diagnosis during the pandemic as a young adult, as well as the various ways ADHD is still being overlooked and dismissed in girls and young women. I really appreciated and enjoyed Raegan's perspective and I'm sure you will, too.     - - - - - Reserve your spot in the Jan/Feb Book Club: www.womenandadhd.com/bookclub - - - - - Work 1-on-1 with Katy: www.womenandadhd.com/coaching - - - - - Women & ADHD listeners can now receive 10% off your first month of BetterHelp. Click here to get started! - - - - - If you are a woman who was diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood and you'd like to be a guest on this podcast, please reach out to Katy via email womenandADHDpodcast@gmail.com. Episode 63 with Sari Solden. "A neurodiverse brain isn't something to be fixed. Only dogs and furniture get fixed." If you had asked me when I first started this podcast who my dream guest would be, I would have said today's guest: psychotherapist, author and researcher Sari Solden. When she wrote Women and Attention Deficit Disorder back in the mid-90s, she was one of the first to look at how neurodiversity appears differently in women than in men and why that is. Now 30 years later, Sari continues to counsel adults with ADHD and specialize in unique ways in which ADHD presents in women. In addition to her groundbreaking research and her books on ADHD, she serves on the professional advisory board of ADDA (the Attention Deficit Disorder Association) and was the recipient of their award for outstanding service by a helping professional. Her books include Women with ADD, Journeys Through ADDulthood, and the workbook A Radical Guide for Women with ADHD (co-written with Michelle Frank), which in my opinion should be required reading for all late-diagnosis women. I was such an absolute pleasure and honor to chat with Sari, and we talk about the connections she made 30 years ago when it comes to what ADHD looks like in women, why ADHD is overlooked in girls and why women tend to get diagnosed much later in life. We discuss traits that are unique to women, as well as the current “trendiness” of an ADHD diagnosis … and Sari reveals how she rename ADHD if she could.
