Quinn's in Beacon hosts monthly open mic Aside from local celebrity Mary Poppiins playing the spoons and Beacon High School junior Teo Fairbanks sitting in on drums, the house band and most of the visiting musicians at Quinn's monthly jazz jam in April came from afar. Pianist Elliot Steele, who drove 75 minutes from Catskill, has attended every first Monday session for the past three years. (It happens again at Quinn's on May 5.) Trumpet player Josh Economy trekked across the river from Walden, and drummer Jeremy Holman bopped down from New Paltz to check out the vibe and socialize. "I'm way out of practice," he says. Steve Scholz, a piano player who lives an hour away in Germantown, says it's worth the trip - not so much to jam along on two songs, but because "there's a big sense of community." Horns, guitars and spoons are BYO. Chris Talio (bass) and Matthieu Carvin (electric keyboard) offer their instruments to regulars and strangers alike as host Bryan Kopchak reads the room to assemble compatible combos. Most participants play piano or drums and the house set, a compact vintage Ludwig model, is well-suited for jazz. Because no other bass players showed up at Quinn's on April 7, Talio put in yeoman's work. During his dinner break, Poppiins pulled out the spoons and improvised with Kopchak, who lives in Central Valley. "This is the bestest place to be on a Monday night in Beacon," said Poppiins, who established the rhythm. Kopchak started on brushes, then picked up the sticks and hit the drums' metal rims. Sounding like tap dancers, they created enough variation to keep things interesting. According to Kopchak, the jazz cats began hanging at Quinn's about 10 years ago, took a hiatus during the pandemic and returned in February 2022. The forum gives younger students a chance to mix it up with experienced musicians in a real-world setting. Fairbanks plays trumpet with the high school big band and a smaller group, but he is also adept behind the drums. Anticipating his turn at Quinn's, he took a seat near the stage, bobbing his head, tapping his feet and staring at the kit. After Kopchak counted off "one, two, you know what to do," Fairbanks locked in with Steele on piano as they exchanged improvised call-and-response riffs. When Talio took an experimental flight, Fairbanks kept pace, incorporating the tom-toms into beats that complemented the tune. Fairbanks' parents, professional trombone player Jeff and cellist Choi, instilled a love for the form. His younger brother, Kyle, plays alto sax and would have shown up to the jam but got bogged down with homework. Teo would like to study jazz in college. "There's nothing else like it; you can be creative with the dynamics of the solos and slip in your own material on the fly," he said. "It's where the unexpected happens." Jazz also fosters communication onstage and off. "I can have anxiety speaking with people sometimes, but when I play, it's like me talking and it's not as awkward," Teo says. "I've made a lot of friends through this music." Quinn's is located at 330 Main St. in Beacon. The music begins at 8 p.m. There is also a jazz jam on the third Wednesday of each month at The Falcon in Marlboro.
Also, public hearing on budget scheduled for Tuesday The Beacon school board agreed March 24 to a $60,000 payment to end a lawsuit filed by Daniel Glenn, a former South Avenue Elementary principal who was fired in 2023. Glenn, who is Black, alleged in a federal civil suit filed last year that he had been the victim of "disparate treatment and a hostile work environment due to his race." He asked for damages and to be returned to his job with back pay. After being hired in August 2021, Glenn said he told district officials in 2022 "that his job was permeated with racial discrimination on a continuous basis in the structure of how the school operated." He said he received no notice allowing him to contest allegations against him before being terminated in June 2023. Glenn had been removed from his position five months earlier, replaced by an acting principal, Brian Archer, then the district's director of evaluation and student services. Before coming to Beacon, Glenn taught first and second grade for 19 years in the Newburgh district and was an assistant principal in New Paltz. The district's response to his lawsuit, filed in June 2024, argued that there was insufficient evidence to "plausibly claim" that Glenn's dismissal was racially motivated. The district said the allegation that Superintendent Matt Landahl believed only the accounts of "unidentified teachers and students" whose racial identities were not named was "insufficient to allege discriminatory intent." The settlement agreement, obtained through a Freedom of Information Law request, notes that Glenn's employment record was amended to show he was not dismissed but resigned. The district also agreed to provide a neutral reference that provides only his title and dates of employment. For his part, Glenn agreed not to apply for employment in the district "until the end of time." The settlement was paid by the district's insurance carrier. Second lawsuit A lawsuit against the district that alleged a student was assaulted by a classmate at school and on the bus has been resolved, according to court records. In legal documents, a parent alleged the child had been "sexually abused," "falsely imprisoned" and "psychologically tortured" during the fall of 2022. The state judge held two settlement hearings before closing the case in July. In response to a Freedom of Information Law requested filed by The Current, school officials said the district "is not in possession of any documents" concerning a settlement. Eric Richman, the attorney who represented the parent, said he could not discuss the case because it had been sealed. Budget hearing The Beacon school board will hold a public hearing during its Tuesday (May 6) meeting on the district's $87.7 million budget proposal for 2025-26, the final step before voters are asked to approve the spending plan on May 20. On April 22, the board unanimously approved the $87.7 million plan, which includes a 5.09 percent tax-levy increase. Most of the discussion in recent board meetings has revolved around the levy - or the total amount of property taxes the district can collect - which stands to increase because of new development and debt service on a $50 million capital project approved last year by voters. The proposed revenue for 2025-26 includes $50 million in property taxes, about $32 million in state aid and $2.5 million taken from savings. Administrators said the budget will allow the district to maintain smaller elementary class sizes, increased mental health support for students and a full-day pre-K program. For the first time, the district would launch a summer workshop program for incoming high school students and create an on-site mental health clinic at Rombout Middle School. The district would also hire additional teachers for elementary students struggling in math and reading and a part-time elementary speech instructor.

Program would connect city with Newburgh Two area residents have been awarded $100,000 by New York State to explore a bike-sharing program that would connect Beacon and Newburgh. Thomas Wright, a Beacon resident and head of the city's Greenway Trail Committee, and Naomi Hersson-Ringskog, an urban planner who lives in Newburgh, were awarded the funding through a Clean Mobility program overseen by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). It aims to add zero-emission connections to public transportation in underserved communities. The award is not to create a bike-share program but to plan how one could work. Wright, who works in Newburgh, and Hersson-Ringskog will be paired with WXY Architecture + Urban Design to develop a blueprint for a program similar to New York City's Citi Bike initiative. Wright and Hersson-Ringskog said they envision stations with eight to 10 bikes each, some electric, which users could check out for a fee or perhaps at no charge because of sponsors. The duo foresee their plan leading to a public-private partnership like Citi Bike's, which partners with the New York City Department of Transportation and Lyft, the ridesharing company. A combination of private funding, sponsors and memberships support the program. Officials on both sides of the Hudson River have indicated they're supportive of bikes for transportation, Hersson-Ringskog said. In Beacon, Mayor Lee Kyriacou has endorsed the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail, a 7.5-mile linear park that Scenic Hudson is planning between Beacon and Cold Spring. The city is equally enthusiastic about a proposed Beacon-to-Hopewell rail trail. Both projects would significantly increase safe bike routes. Beacon also has applied for funding from Dutchess County for a rehab of Beekman Street, which leads to the Metro-North station. The project, still several years away, could include bike lanes that would build on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's "first mile, last mile" initiative for environmentally friendly ways for passengers to connect to trains. In Newburgh, Hersson-Ringskog's nonprofit, Dept of Small Interventions, in 2020 partnered with the city's Transportation Advisory Committee to create a community bike action plan, while monthly "critical mass" community rides take place from April to October. "You feel proud of your community that you're not starting from zero," Hersson-Ringskog said. She and Wright are also working to create the "Regional Connector," a 1-mile path that would connect the Metro-North station in Beacon to the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge. That effort, they say, could unify a growing network of trails. A bike-share program could accelerate the campaign, Wright said, "by providing a means of mobility which gives users much greater range. When you add in e-bikes, the options are further multiplied." WXY plans to survey residents in both cities (see linktr.ee/newburgh.beacon.bike), while Wright and Hersson-Ringskog will make presentations to community groups. WXY will also help with data analysis, mapping and exploring partnerships for maintenance, operations and funding. "We hope to uncover the voice of a broad cross-section of the communities that desires this," Hersson-Ringskog said. "Here you have a transportation system that could really unite Beacon and Newburgh. We're stronger together, essentially." The bike-share grant was one of 29 - totaling $2.9 million - that NYSERDA announced in March. Projects elsewhere in the state will explore the feasibility of charging hubs, scooter-share programs and electric-vehicle car shares. Ten of the 29 are in the Hudson Valley, including in Kingston, Poughkeepsie and New Paltz. With "transformational" developments being considered in the region, Wright said he believes "multi-modal systems" that can alleviate congestion without polluting the environment "are so important to think about."

We signed the exchange of prisoners, but he didn't do it. What kind of diplomacy, J.D., you are speaking about? You're gambling with World War Three!” Social Security announces significant workforce reductions The Social Security Administration is set to lay off a large number of employees, with workers being offered incentives of up to $25,000 for voluntary separation, reports The Epoch Times. Heart disease could be prevented with this one simple test After abortion, heart disease is the second leading cause of mortality. But that doesn't mean people are powerless against the condition — there are some steps they can take to help reduce the risk. In addition to adopting healthier lifestyle habits, getting a specific screening — the coronary artery calcium or CAC score — can help detect early signs of heart disease, reports Fox News. The CAC score is a specialized Computed Tomography or CT scan that measures calcium buildup in the walls of the heart's arteries, according to board-certified cardiologist Dr. Robert Segal, founder of Manhattan Cardiology. He said, "This calcium points to the accumulation of plaque that can cause heart disease." The higher the score, the more calcium in the arteries, thus a greater likelihood of a heart attack, stroke or other cardiac issue. In 1 Corinthians 6:19, the Apostle Paul asks, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.” New abortion battle opening up over state shield laws And finally, the national abortion battle is moving to a new front, and it's one that stretches across state lines, reports The Epoch Times. A telemedicine abortion provider in New York has thrust the state's abortion shield law into the spotlight, setting the stage for an unprecedented state-against-state clash on one of the nation's most divisive issues. Abortionist Maggie Carpenter of New Paltz, New York, was fined in Texas and charged in Louisiana for providing abortion kill pills to patients in the two states, where the procedure is all but banned. Judge Bryan Gantt of Collin County, Texas, ordered Carpenter to pay $100,000 in penalties, plus attorney's fees, for prescribing the abortion kill pill to a woman near Dallas in violation of Texas law. He also barred the doctor from prescribing abortion medication to future Texas patients. The February 13th ruling was made just two days after Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed a warrant for Carpenter's arrest and extradition to his state to stand trial for allegedly prescribing abortion kill pills to a pregnant minor. On Tuesday, February 25, the NY Department of State (DOS) and NYSERDA released a revised draft of the 2024 Building/Energy Code update. A public hearing was held on February 28. While many praised the council for including the provisions of the All Electric Building Act in their draft, a number of key proposals made by the Climate Aciton Council were relegated to an advisory appendix rather than being treated as the mandate they are. We hear from a number of speakers, starting with Assemblymember Gallagher of Brooklyn; Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha of New Paltz; Justin Flagg representing Senator Kruger; Assemblymember Anna Kelles of Ithaca; Eric Wood of NYPIRG; and a staff person for ACEEE the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy
The Landisi siblings are hoops standouts for Beacon. Their mom was among the best ever to play for Haldane. Jen Moran Landisi, 48, oversees Beacon's Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) basketball program, which has 200 players in kindergarten through the eighth grade. Otherwise, she is probably watching her daughter, Reilly, and her son, Ryan, play for Beacon High School. The girls' and boys' teams compete on Monday (March 3) in the first round of the state tournament. Jen knows a bit about being a standout. By the time she graduated from Haldane High School in 1994, she had set a scoring record with 1,776 points that held for 14 years until Brittany Shields scored 1,945. (Reilly has 1,293 points for Beacon; she is also an All-State soccer player who will compete this fall for SUNY Oneonta.) Described as a "whirlwind of hustle" when she was inducted into the Haldane Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017, Jen led the Blue Devils to three state Final Fours. Her teams went 97-15. She began playing for the varsity in eighth grade, was named first-team All-State as a senior and went on to score nearly 1,000 points for St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill. "I remember the gym [at Haldane] was always full - that's not always the case for girls' games," Jen recalled. She said a running joke at the time was that the best time for burglars in Cold Spring was during state finals weekend, when the entire village decamped to Glens Falls. "It was the community support I remember most," she says, "and having a really great coach." That was Ken Thomas, who, she said, "knew the game, made us love it and didn't put up with much." She and her teammates were inspired by the 1989 girls' team, which won the school's first state title. (Haldane also won in 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2008.) "We wanted to do just as well," Jen said. Young fans also helped motivate the team. "Win or lose, they'd ask for our autographs," she said. Jen began playing at age 5 in the Philipstown Recreation League, with her mom and dad as coaches. "I don't know if I had a choice, with them coaching," she said. "But there was no question I loved it." Her children also began playing at an early age in the Beacon CYO program. "I loved it right away," says Reilly, 18. "I always wanted to go practice, looked forward to games and my best friends were on the team." While Reilly feels ball handling and playmaking are her strengths, she needs to "pull up and shoot more, instead of always driving to the basket." The Bulldogs enter the tournament at 15-5, with a 12-game winning streak that included a win at previously undefeated Pine Bush after losing to the same team by 20 points earlier in the season. Reilly said she especially appreciates rival games, such as the Battle of the Tunnel series against Haldane. "That game is always fun," she said. "There's a larger than usual crowd, and if we win, we get a big trophy!" She was diplomatic regarding whether she or her younger brother, a junior center who averages nine points and 5.5 rebounds for the 16-4 boys' team, is the better player. "We play different positions," she said. Ryan also started basketball in Beacon's CYO, during the first grade, and also loved the game immediately. "It's fast-paced, so it can't really get boring, plus I've been playing with the same group of kids since I was little," he said. "It's fun when you have a team that's good and knows how to play together." He said Beacon's biggest rival is New Paltz, which beat them 73-66 early in the season. New Paltz was also the opponent in the game he remembers most after 2½ years on the varsity, in the state tournament when the Bulldogs won despite having one of their best players out sick. He concedes his sister is probably the better ballplayer. "I'm just bigger," he said, with a smile. Mom said she squirms a bit when watching her kids play. "I'm a nervous wreck because they're my babies!" she said. "I just want them to do well, for themselves."

Thom Francis welcomes Mike Jurkovic to the stage at Albany Poets Presents at Restaurant Navona in Albany, NY. Mike Jurkovic‘s latest collection, "mooncussers," was published by Luchador Press in 2022. Recent collections include "AmericanMental," (Luchador Press 2019) and "Blue Fan Whirring" (Nirala Press, 2018). He is the president of Calling All Poets, New Paltz, NY. His reviews appear at All About Jazz and Lightwoodpress and he hosts New Jazz Excursions WIOX 91.3 FM. He loves Emily most of all. On February 15, 2017, Mike was the guest poet at the Albany Poets Presents, a bi-monthly featured reader series hosted by Thom Francis at Restaurant Navona in Albany, NY. Local poet Dan Wilcox noted in his blog that Mike "began appropriately enough with a poem looking at language as dangerous. A couple poems on mortality included “Gravity Gets Us All,” & “Breathing Issue” from a hospital visit. Mike ... read poems about the new administration in Washington, including “Cloud Land,” “I'm the Next Guy” & a poem of revolt beginning “I can't control myself these days…” Of course there was a poem for his wife, “Gather Here.” For more information about Mike and Calling All Poets events in the Hudson Valley , go to https://callingallpoets.net/
Thom Francis remembers Hudson Valley poet, host, and educator Robert Milby, who passed away in December 2024, with his reading at the 15th Anniversary of the Mudd Poets open mic series in New Paltz on June 16, 2018. Born and raised in Florida, New York, Robert began sharing his poetry publicly in March 1995. Over nearly three decades, he performed at more than 1,500 readings, captivating audiences across the Hudson Valley, New York City, Long Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New England. Robert's poetry appeared in respected publications such as Chronogram and Home Planet News, as well as in anthologies like Will Work for Peace and Calling All Poets: CAPs Voices. His collections, including Ophelia's Offspring and Victorian House: Ghosts and Gothic Poems, reveal his mastery of language and his deep connection to the spiritual and the gothic. In May 2017, Robert was appointed Poet Laureate of Orange County, New York, a role in which he championed poetry's power to connect communities. His chapbook Gothic, Orange reflected his appreciation for the region's unique character. Robert's performances were unforgettable, often blending poetry with music. His collaborations with Carl Welden in “Theremin Ghosts!” brought poetry to life in a haunting and innovative way. This unique duo became a seasonal favorite during October, adding to the mystique of Robert's gothic-themed work. By his own reckoning, Robert Milby was a featured reader over 450 times in his 30 year career as the "Hudson Valley's hardest working poet." He hosted over 30 poetry open mic series in that time. Robert Milby's legacy will continue to inspire poets and writers throughout the Hudson Valley and beyond. He leaves behind a body of work that speaks to the human experience with grace, passion, and honesty. There will be a memorial celebration and open mic at Elting Memorial Library, 93 Main Street, New Paltz NY, on January 19, 2025 from 1 to 5:00pm. Bring five minutes of material to perform, either one of Robert's own poems, a poem of your own written in his honor, or a poem by one of his favorite poets.

Later on, we hear Taina Asili's 2024 “soulful conversation” with musician, singer, and composer Toshi Reagon. After that, we reflect on small acts for peace by hearing from Kristoph DiMaria about a small online demonstration he did to remember people, mostly children, who were killed in Gaza. For our final piece, Thom Francis remembers Hudson Valley poet, host, and educator Robert Milby, who passed away in December 2024, with Milby's reading at the 15th Anniversary of the Mudd Poets open mic series in New Paltz on June 16, 2018.

Steve Greenfield, a New Paltz firefighter and long-time activitist for alternative and third-party candidates explains the self-defeating votes we've just seen by working class people and minority men. Democrats need to understand why this happened and act to prevent it — yet again — from costing them an election Steve Greenfield, 63, of New Paltz, is a past member of the New Paltz Board of Education, the current Captain and former Secretary and Executive Board member of the New Paltz Fire Department, and has served the village, town, and school district of New Paltz in appointed positions for more than 20 years. He is a former New York State and National Committee member of the Green Party. He resigned from that job in 2020 in a disagreement over failing party strategy, and ran for Congress in the Hudson Valley in 2002, 2018, and 2020. He has been an organizer of civil disobedience actions against non-defensive war, fossil fuel use, and ICE and police misconduct, and has been arrested many times. He was the press officer for the New Paltz Green Party at the time of the first illegal same-sex marriages conducted in New York State by then-Mayor Jason West, the first Green Party elected official in New York State history. In 2005, Steve generated a brief national media frenzy by entering the Democratic Party primary for US Senate against Hillary Clinton, on an anti-war and progressive platform, in protest against Clinton's support for the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. In his youth and young adulthood, he became an Eagle Scout, earned his bachelor's degree in economics at Columbia, and has traveled the world engaged in his career as a musician. He is also an endurance athlete for a variety of charities, including the 9-11 oriented Tunnel To Towers Foundation and the Sloop Clearwater.
In this episode Rosemary discusses 3rd parties, the future for the Democratic Party, and how the Republican Party continues to cruise to election wins. In this episode of “At Your Convenience,” in partnership with C-StoreTEC, Mike Templeton, vice president of digital strategy at NexChapter, talks to convenience leaders about opportunities for c-stores in the mobile gaming space. Templeton speaks with Abigail Cerra, loyalty marketing manager at Chestnut Market, New Paltz, New York, and Kim Carlson, chief revenue officer and chief operating officer at Mobivity, a Chandler, Arizona-based company that connects mobile game and marketers with restaurant, convenience and fuel brands. Mobile games are the No. 1 activity on mobile devices, Carlson said, and it actually ranks ahead of social media and texting. “Gaming and impulse purchases go hand in hand,” said Cerra. “Gaming is a billion-dollar industry, so knowing that we could capture the attention of consumers that are already conditioned to micro purchases, AKA impulse buying, we knew we can make them our most valuable customer.” Chestnut Market is No. 93 on CSP's 2024 Top 202 ranking of U.S. convenience-store chains by total number of company-owned retail outlets. Tune in to learn about the power of partnership and how technology and strategy combine to drive growth in the convenience store sector, and don't miss out on future C-StoreTEC webinars, podcasts and the upcoming conference.

Paul starts the podcast with a discussion of his special presentation to the graduating nurses from the College of Nursing at Texas A&M. This presentation was part of a Life Transitions Series. He discusses how he might be able to do a similar presentation for other groups of graduating college students, as well as groups of investors who are trying to get the most from their company 401k. The second topic is regarding a new set of tables that should help investors figure out potential future returns for the S&P 500, Small Cap Value, U.S. 2 Fund Index Portfolio and U.S. 4 Fund Index Portfolio. The third topic was motivated by Ben Carlson's articles on “Why Housing is Everyone's Favorite Investment” and “What is the Historical Rate of Return on Housing?” Paul recently sold his home and discusses the challenges of figuring out how the profits compared to the S&P 500., As promised Paul had his meeting with David Sterman, an hourly CFP, who has followed our recommendations. NeeNee Rushie grew up in Jamaica where her mom and her 3 sisters raised her. She's always been very touched by music and songs from a very early age. She sang in church and school choirs since the 4th grade- when she discovered that she had a talent for singing and performing.NeeNee moved to NY in 2003 and went to college in New Paltz in 2005 where she met the original drummer and Rob (their current bass and musical director) that same year. The band would form in a couple of years. Since then, they have released 5 full length studio albums, a couple live EPs, performed all over the country and experienced countless strange and unforgettable moments. The band has had some line up changes over the years. Some wonderful musicians have come and gone. Rob, Chas and NeeNee are original members. Guthrie, Manuel, Roger and Ryan have been on board for several years now. The band operates like a family. They play reggae-ish, ska-ish, world-ish grooves, sprinkled with some soul-ish nuggets. When NeeNee became a mother, their strategy changed from playing tons of shows, to being more picky about the shows they play. She realized that she was going to have to make the same or stronger impact, but by playing less shows. NeeNee's daughter really regenerated a new love for the band in her. Her daughter has taken a major interest in the band and their music, and that has given NeeNee a new perspective. She's never felt more passionate about the band and is feeling prouder of what they have done, and more confident about what they are working on.https://www.bigtakeoverband.com/On today's show NeeNee shares about her childhood and the music that she was surrounded by while living in Jamaica and what it was like leaving her home and her mama. We talk about her process for writing and collaborating with the band, being a woman in a male dominated industry, and listen to a few songs and hear what they mean to NeeNee. Of course, we also talk about motherhood, how that's impacted her and the band, and how they are evolving as a result. They have two local shows coming up. First up is at The Falcon on September 28th and then The Linda in Albany on October 26th.Here's the Tarot reading that I shared from Nikki Foggerty. "I bring love and compassion to myself and embrace all the possibilities that lie ahead.. "We listened to a song from Amber Rubarth who will be a guest on the show Sept. 9th. She's also playing this benefit...Neighbors for Neighbors on September 14th supporting People's Place and the O+ Festival. Here's a link to today's playlist.Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.Our show music is from Shana Falana!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFYITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCAFollow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast

Last episode with Luis Favela, we discussed many of the ideas from ecological psychology, and how Louie is trying to reconcile those principles with those of neuroscience. In this episode, Damian and I in some ways continue that discussion, because Damian is also interested in unifying principles of ecological psychology and neuroscience. However, he is approaching it from a different perspective that Louie. What drew me originally to Damian was a paper he put together with a bunch of authors offering their own alternatives to the computer metaphor of the brain, which has come to dominate neuroscience. And we discuss that some, and I'll link to the paper in the show notes. But mostly we discuss Damian's work studying the fractal structure of our behaviors, connecting that structure across scales, and linking it to how our brains and bodies interact to produce our behaviors. Along the way, we talk about his interests in cascades dynamics and turbulence to also explain our intelligence and behaviors. So, I hope you enjoy this alternative slice into thinking about how we think and move in our bodies and in the world. Damian's website. The Layover Hoodie. Black, Oversized and Insanely Comfortable. https://footwork.club/product/the-layover-hoodie/ 9am. 3pm. 21:00. Newark. Hamburg. Bangkok. No matter the time, no matter the city or airport, the Footwork Original Layover Hoodie is the only choice. As globe-trotters and travelers we found our inspiration in the miles/km that lay ahead. As well as the ones before that helped shape us today. On the front you'll find condensed text. The same text that you can also find before every podcast episode we've ever made. To go further, it's a portion from a speech by Alan Watts titled What if Money Was no Object. A title which we live by. If you say that getting the money is the most important thing, you'll spend your life completely wasting your time. You'll be doing things you don't like doing in order to go on living, that is to go on doing thing you don't like doing, which is stupid. Better to have a short life, that is full of what you like doing, than a long life spent in a miserable way. On the side, you'll see part of our logo deconstructed. Our boarding pass. It can't be the Layover Hoodie without the ticket. And on the back, we had to spread the legendary logo from coast to coast. Now you can plug and pass from any airport lobby in the world. The tee was made in New Paltz, NY as it was also important for us to work locally with those who could understand and help put our vision to life. Thank you to T-SOURCE. Episode No. 616 features artist Gary Simmons and curator Sarah L. Eckhardt. The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is presenting "Gary Simmons: Public Enemy," a survey of Simmons' 35-year career. The exhibition reveals how Simmons has addressed race, class and US history in ways that have remained persistently au courant. It was curated by René Morales and Jadine Collingwood, with Jack Schneider. After closing on October 1, the exhibition will be on view at the Pérez Art Museum Miami from December 5 through April 24, 2024. The MCA Chicago and DelMonico Books have published an outstanding catalogue. Bookshop and Amazon offer it for $56-60. Along with Drew Thompson, Eckhardt is the co-curator of "Benjamin Wigfall & Communications Village." It's at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond through September 10. The exhibition is a survey of Richmond-native Wigfall's work, and a historicization of Communications Village, the interdisciplinary artist-run project that Wigfall instigated while teaching at the State University of New York, New Paltz in the early 1970s, as the instigator of what we now call social practice. The excellent catalogue was published by the VMFA, which offers it for $40. Instagram: Gary Simmons, Tyler Green.
