Olana (Hudson) Olana is less than 50 miles north on Route 9 or the Taconic Parkway. Now is the perfect time to visit the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Hudson River School of Art painter, Frederic Edwin Church, in the home he designed with architect Calvert Vaux and on the grounds that were his visual embodiment of a bucolic landscape. The current exhibit, Global Artist, which runs through Oct. 25, portrays the multitude of landscape paintings from distant lands. The exhibit is on the second floor of Church's home, which was inspired by his trips to Persia in the 19th century. You will see works on loan from many museums and private collections that depict the Parthenon, an iceberg off Newfoundland, Petra in Jordan, the Andes in South America, and yes, the sunsets over the Hudson River. Church's own iconic paintings adorn every part of his living space, with European masters in the dining room. There is also fascinating ephemera throughout his sitting rooms, library and studio. Large windows highlight the landscape. The home is surrounded by 250 acres, now a state park, that was thoughtfully planned by Church. Apparently, he was fond of collecting seeds during his travels. As you stand on the grounds, you may feel like part of one of his paintings. Within 10 minutes is Hudson, another gem of a bygone era, where whaling vessels had safe harbor. Hudson is home to upscale boutiques of house furnishings and clothing by makers and designers, food markets and antique stores. For simple, affordable fare, try Baba Louie. Another local stronghold on Warren Street is Red Dot. Or pack a picnic basket, weather permitting, and dine at Olana. Olana, at 5720 Route 9G in Hudson, is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset. Home tours take place daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. except Monday and start at $20 (children ages 16 and younger are free). You can explore the house on your own on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for $25. Picnics and dogs on leashes are allowed on the grounds. See olana.org. Campus Art Tour Two college campuses within an hour of the Highlands have well-kept secrets. The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, at SUNY-New Paltz, is housed in a nondescript building that is also home to the Parker Theater. There are three areas in the main exhibit area to explore, which is across from a studio that features local artists (e.g., the annual Hudson Valley Artists Show) and contemporary themes (e.g., language, society and power). In the Main Hall, A Living Collection highlights the museum's assortment of permanent acquisitions or commissions. The art includes paintings by American masters (e.g., Milton Avery, George Inness, Joel Meyerowitz) and contemporary sculpture and collectible objects of great distinction. One featured exhibit and program hang from four to six months and is frequently curated by a member of the art faculty. Recent exhibits highlighted the artistic heritage of New Paltz faculty and global connections amongst international artists that had all crossed paths with a teacher in New York. There is also a dedicated space to sit for a while where creative experimentation is encouraged with art materials provided in a hands-on activity room. It is a chance to ponder the impact of what was viewed during the walk through the gallery. Conversation with museum staff — university students who share artistic interests — is welcomed. Overall, the hallmark of the visit is having a self-paced tour, without rush or crowds. The low-key art adventure continues by traveling across the Mid-Hudson Bridge to Vassar. Take a lunch break at Meyer's Olde Dutch on Collegeview Avenue in Poughkeepsie, a recent expansion from Beacon. After lunch, a walk across the campus, which is an arboretum, takes you to the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center near the South Gate. The Loeb is double the size and packs more into its galleries than the Dorsky. It will take twice the amount of time to wander and absorb the art treasures. Starting with the Founding G...

This week, pop culture historian Jennifer Keishin Armstrong stops by to discuss her latest book Parks and Rec: The Underdog TV Show That Lit'rally Inspired a Vision for a Better America. Armstrong tells the definitive story of the creation and legacy of the beloved television show Parks and Recreation, with exclusive interview content from its cast, crew, and creators, as well as an introduction by Nick Offerman. Armstrong is interviewed by AWM Director of Programs Allison Sansone. The two are joined by special guest Ric Offerman, the mayor of Minooka, IL (and Nick Offerman's dad!) This conversation originally took place April 22, 2026 and was recorded live at the American Writers Museum. We hope you enjoy entering the Mind of a Writer. AWM PODCAST NETWORK HUB More about Parks and Rec: More than fifteen years after Parks and Recreation premiered, it has become a streaming and pop culture staple. It's beloved for its jokes, characters, and expressions—the show even created a now widely observed holiday, Galentine's Day. How did it all happen and how did the show transform from a ratings disappointment into a cult classic? Pop culture historian Jennifer Keishin Armstrong reveals all this and more in the definitive history of the show, which is as full of humor, optimism, and heart as Parks and Recreation itself. Through new and exclusive interviews, as well as deep insight and smart and entertaining pop culture analysis, Armstrong tells the story of how Parks and Recreation came to be: how it grew from The Office's success and Obama-inspired optimism, how producers assembled one of TV's most lovable casts but barely survived a mediocre first season, how the show found its voice by getting more political and more romantic, and how it became a cultural force despite middling ratings during its network run, going on to become a television savior of the Trump era and a modern classic. For fans of the show, readers who enjoy behind-the-scenes stories, and everyone who loves a nostalgic deep-dive, Parks and Rec is an exploration of its legacy as an enduringly lovable modern comedy classic full of optimism and heart. Lovingly told and deeply researched, Parks and Rec is the ultimate history of the show that taught us what's important in life: friends, waffles, and work. New York Times bestselling author JENNIFER KEISHIN ARMSTRONG has written nine books, including Seinfeldia, Mary and Lou and Rhoda and Ted, Sex and the City and Us, When Women Invented Television, and So Fetch: The Making of Mean Girls. With this news, we wanted to look at the impact this has had on students and the campus at large. This isn't just a New Paltz issue, however, as numerous institutions around the country have begun to make changes to their cultural departments due to the recent crackdown on DEI in higher education by the Trump Administration. Through the lens of Hip Hop in activism we tell the story of what happens when an institution makes changes to its curriculum based on politics and national trends. In this insightful conversation, Glenn Geher shares his expertise in evolutionary psychology to examine how modern society often diverges from the conditions under which humans evolved. The discussion explores the concept of evolutionary mismatch in modern life, illustrating it through vivid examples such as processed foods, the active lifestyles of nomadic societies, and contemporary educational systems that may not align with natural learning patterns. The conversation highlights the unintended consequences of modern technology—including social media, smartphones, and AI—and emphasizes the importance of understanding human behavior within its evolutionary context. The episode also offers insights into educational innovations, such as Montessori and Sudbury models, that attempt to address mismatches between traditional schooling and natural developmental needs. Glenn provides a thoughtful exploration of the ethical and practical challenges posed by rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, including concerns about cognition, learning, and societal impact. Additionally, the discussion touches on the economic implications of mismatched systems, including issues of accessibility and inequality, and considers how evolutionary psychology can inform our understanding of health, behavior, and broader societal systems. Overall, the conversation examines the powerful influence of technology, social media, and AI on human behavior while reflecting on how aligning modern systems with evolutionary principles may help address contemporary challenges and shape a healthier future. by UFO History Buff & Author, Charles Lear ~ This past week, I found myself in the position of having two co-workers who are UFO witnesses and decided to take advantage of this and have them tell their stories for this blog. The first story is that of Ilya Vett, 54, who has been with the organization for over three years, and he first told it to me not long after I met him. He grew up in the area of New Paltz, New York, which is near Pine Bush and the Hudson Valley. Both of those areas are notorious for UFO flaps in the 1980s (Ilya and I went to the 2022 Pine Bush UFO Fair where I met up with Martin), which is when Ilya said he had his sighting. Ilya also told me that his wife, prior to their marriage, had a sighting of a UFO with her family while they were driving. According to him, when they got home, it was over their house. As for Ilya's story, he recorded it for me on his own time not prompted by any questions from me. According to him, he and some friends were riding their bikes on Prospect Street in New Paltz sometime in the fall (school had started) “in the early 80s.” It was dark, and they were heading north towards Henry W. Dubois Drive. The area was undeveloped at the time, and there were “a lot of trees” on both sides of the road. They heard what Ilya indicated through vocalizations was a combination of a whoosh and a hum, though he settled on it not being “distinct.” Read more →

A lot of team leaders are trying to grow right now, but very few know how to scale without burning out, losing culture, or drowning in problems that show up the moment the business gets bigger. That tension is exactly where Lindsay Stevens built her strength. And the way she talks about these challenges will make every real estate leader stop and think.   On this episode of the GRIT Podcast, Brian Charlesworth sits down with Lindsay, co-owner and team leader of Stevens Real Estate, to uncover how she went from overwhelmed agent to running one of the fastest-growing teams in her market.    The twist is that none of it came from perfect planning. It came from saying yes to uncomfortable moments, including being thrown onto a five-thousand-person stage with one week to prepare. She also breaks down the discipline required to survive New York's long 120-day transaction cycle. It is the kind of cycle that forces leaders to either master their systems or get buried by them.   Lindsay talks about the seasons she had to fight through distractions, doubt, and long days that made her question whether she was even built for leadership. She shares a simple line that keeps her centered. "Life is hard. Real estate is hard. But the sun comes up tomorrow." It is the kind of line that hits differently when you hear the story behind it.   Brian and Lindsay also break down a moment that shifted their entire operation. Dialing in their Sisu stages, statuses, and tagging finally removed the chaos inside New York's long transaction cycle, and it changed the way their agents performed. As she puts it, "You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems."   Top Takeaways:   (2:23) Saying yes to a 5000-person stage (9:51) Breakthroughs after wanting to quit (12:02) CEO vs. team leader roles in a business (14:21) How Sisu rebuilt transaction flow (21:08) The power of proximity and fast execution (32:19) Scaling with leverage and a new COO (32:12) Working on the business, not in the business (37:58) Why systems come before 20 agents (38:28) Micro commitments and predictable wins in Sisu (42:21) AI as a business partner and coach (45:00) Why AI will not replace relationships in real estate   If you want an honest look at growth, leadership, and the real work behind building a strong team, this episode with Lindsay will pull you in from the first few minutes.   About Lindsay Stevens   Lindsay Stevens is a Hudson Valley native and co-founder of Stevens Realty Group, featured on HGTV's House Hunters. Today on the show, I get to chat with Marielena Ferrer and Viktorsha Uliyanova, a multidisciplinary artist and educator working with alternative photography, installation, video, and fiber art. Her work explores impermanence, the notions of home, and cultural identity narrated through the prism of memory. Her practice is informed by her upbringing in the Soviet Union, political repression, and the immigrant experience. In her research, Uliyanova explores neglected and overlooked histories, often using archives as a catalyst for her work. She received her BA in English Literature, Language, and Criticism from Hunter College and an MFA in Photography and Related Media at State University of New York at New Paltz. Her work has been exhibited at Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, Baxter St., MOMA PS1, Participant Inc, Collarworks, among others. She is the recipient of New York State Council on the Arts Grant, Arts Mid-Hudson Culture Grant, Traverso Photography Award, Women's Studio Workshop SAI Grant, Sojourner Truth Diversity Fellowship, and Research for Creative Projects Grant. Recently, she completed a residency at Vermont Studio Center. She lives in the Hudson Valley and teaches photography at SUNY New Paltz.Viktorsha's upcoming solo exhibit “Quieter than Water, Lower than Grass” is a multimedia installation that examines the fragility of memory and its impact on history, immigrant narratives ,and cultural identity. This work explores themes of migration, belonging, and domesticity. The opening is November 8 at Roundabouts Now Gallery in Kingston, with a panel discussion on November 16 featuring Marielena, Viktorsha, and two additional women artists whose work addresses these same themes.Today, we talk about the meaning of the show title, and how this Russian idiom permeated culture and played a role in repression and control. Viktorsha shares about the layers of her creative process and how this show came to be. We discuss some of the pieces, their meaning, the process in creating them, and the meaning behind that process. One of the main pieces in the exhibition is an installation of suspended large scale cyanotypes of "Brezhnevka"s, prefabricated  panel buildings that were built in the Soviet Union from 1964-1980. They were built fast and cheap and can still be found and seen throughout former Soviet states. Our conversation weaves through themes of assimilation, (uniform)ity, culture, healing, memory, domestication, femininity, the multidimensionality of softness, and belonging.Viktorsha's Project Statement: “Quieter Than Water, Lower than Grass'” is a multimedia project that explores the intersection between history, memory, and photographic evidence. The work employs analogue photographic processes , fabric, and video to explore remembrance, storytelling, and ancestral healing. Drawing from family albums, oral histories, and archival images, I construct narrativesthat have been hidden by the Soviet regime and are often invisible within the dominant historical discourse. The project takes its name from an old Soviet proverb which instills a behavior of keeping a low profile, avoiding any attention from the self, and acting in a way that does notgenerate conflict. The phrase has been used as a deliberate linguistic tool to disseminate imperialist ideologies, generate fear, and maintain repressive socio-political tactics throughout the USSR. This project outlines the importance of critically engaging with mainstream narrativesin order to unlearn them and see their limitations and biases.Quilts are powerful conveyors of the human experience. They are valuable historical documents and memory transmitters that honor storytelling and intergenerational knowledge. Using bed sheets , I hand-sew patchwork of imagery into quilt forms preserving not only my personal memories but also those obscured within the larger cultural and geo-political discourse. Each fabric piece will source from historical documents, family albums, and collected objects to explore, visualize, and underscore the complexity of post-Soviet trauma and immigrant experience. Blue is a color of peace, a color found in our dreams, our hopes, and our memories. It is the color of the sky, water, and our planet, Earth. The cyanotype process uses the natural elements of sun and water to register a photograph. While it is stable, the final result is prone to changing over time. Using this photographic technique allows me to address all of the themes that show up in my work such as identity, history, and memory, all of which are fragmented, mutating, and ever-changing.The project combines a collection of materials and techniques that reference matrilineage, ancestry, and transgenerational trauma. Through layering of fabrics and utilizing the deep blue hues of the cyanotype process, the work visualizes histories that have been hidden, obscured, and lost. The project examines the selective nature of memory, challenging historical biases and emphasizing the importance of community knowledge and healing. The final project will be presented to the public in an exhibition fostering cultural exchange, community dialogue, andbridging the gap between the personal and collective memories. Here's your New Moon Astrology!Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.Our show music is from Shana Falana!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFYITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCAFollow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast

It's a preorder-and-pickup food event featuring handmade dishes -- tamales, pupusas, empanadas -- prepared by a small group of incredible local chefs, most of whom are female immigrants launching their very first food businesses. The chefs are part of the Briico Food Academy, which helps new entrepreneurs build sustainable income, community connections, and confidence through food, without needing outside capital or formal business experience. Each meal tells a story of migration, tradition, and resilience, and proceeds go directly to the chefs.Marielena shares her experience teaching art to women incarcerated at the Ulster County Jail and the many interactions that taught her about them and their lives including surprising insights through the vision boards the women created, their creative writing exercises, and how they collaborated with one another. Through that experience she shares her thoughts about how living together in an incarcerated setting can teach us about the art of living together in a broader community. The womens' art "Voices Unbound" is currently exhibited at Unison in New Paltz now through August 31st.This weekend is Upstate Art Weekend. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus 40 Uyghur Muslim men deported from Thailand to China A group of 40 Uyghur Muslim men detained in Thailand for more than a decade were deported to China in the early hours of February 27th, reports Christian Solidarity Worldwide. Romadon Panjor, a Thai Member of Parliament, reported witnessing two sets of vehicles with covered windows transporting detainees from the International Detention Centre in Suan Phlu, Bangkok. The 40 men were among a group of approximately 300 Uyghurs who were detained by Thai authorities on March 13, 2014 after crossing the border into Thailand in an attempt to escape persecution in China. Family Research Council has documented that China is detaining 1.8-3 million Uyghur Muslims in Internment Camps. Mexico extradites dozens of cartel leaders to US Mexico has begun the process of extraditing dozens of high-level cartel leaders and members to the United States, including Rafael Caro Quintero, a former leader of the Guadalajara cartel involved in the kidnapping and murder of Drug Enforcement Administration agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena in 1985, reports FoxNews. The founders of Los Zetas, Miguel and Omar Morales, also known as Z-40 and Z-42, will be extradited to the U.S. as well. The extraditions were done at the request of the U.S. government as President Donald Trump's tariff deadline looms. One of the president's demands is for Mexico to crack down on dangerous cartels and fentanyl production and distribution. Psalm 37:28 says, “For the LORD loves justice; he will not forsake his faithful ones.” Pope Francis's health declining Pope Francis' health took a sudden decline today after he had an attack of “bronchospasm” resulting in his inhalation of vomit from the attack, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Trump and Vance confront Zelenskyy in Oval Office President Donald Trump berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for being “disrespectful” Friday in an extraordinary Oval Office meeting, then abruptly called off the signing of a minerals deal that Trump said would have moved Ukraine closer to ending its war with Russia, reports the Associated Press. Here's the key moment as Zelensky is explaining how Russian President Vladimir Putin did not keep his word. ZELENSKYY:  “[Putin] killed our people, and he didn't exchange prisoners. We signed the exchange of prisoners, but he didn't do it. What kind of diplomacy, J.D., you are speaking about? What do you mean?” VANCE: “I'm talking about the kind of diplomacy that's going to end the destruction of your country.” ZELENSKYY: (inaudible) “Yes, but …” VANCE: “Mr. President, Mr. President, with respect. I think it's disrespectful for you to come to the Oval Office and try to try to litigate this in front of the American media. Right now, you guys are going around and forcing conscripts to the front lines because you have manpower problems. You should be thanking the president for trying to bring an end to this conflict.” ZELENSKYY: “Have you ever been to Ukraine that you say what problems we have?” VANCE: “I have been to...” ZELENSKYY: “You have come once.” VANCE: “I have actually, I've actually watched and seen the stories, and I know what happens is you bring people. You bring them on a propaganda tour, Mr. President. Do you disagree that you've had problems bringing people in your military?” ZELENSKY: “We have problems.” VANCE: “And do you think.” ZELENSKYY: “I will answer.” VANCE: “that it's respectful to come to the Oval Office of the United States of America and attack the administration that is trying to prevent the destruction of your country?” ZELENSKY: “A lot of questions. Let's start from the beginning.” VANCE: “Sure.” ZELENSKYY: “First of all, during the war, everybody has problems, even you. But you have nice ocean and don't feel now, but you will feel it in the future.” TRUMP: “You don't know that. Don't tell us what we're gonna feel. We're trying to solve a problem. Don't tell us what we're gonna feel.” ZELENSKYY: “I'm not telling you. I'm answering all his questions.” TRUMP: “because you're no position to dictate that exactly.” TRUMP: “You're in no position to dictate what we're going to feel. We're going to feel very good.” ZELENSKYY: “You will feel influenced.” TRUMP: “We're going to feel very good and very strong.” ZELENSKYY: “You will feel influenced.” TRUMP: “You're right now not in a very good position. You don't have the cards right now. With us, you start having cards.” ZELENSKY: “I'm not playing cards. I'm very serious, Mr. President.” TRUMP: “You're playing cards. You're gambling with the lives of millions of people. You're gambling with World War Three!” Social Security announces significant workforce reductions The Social Security Administration is set to lay off a large number of employees, with workers being offered incentives of up to $25,000 for voluntary separation, reports The Epoch Times. Heart disease could be prevented with this one simple test After abortion, heart disease is the second leading cause of mortality. But that doesn't mean people are powerless against the condition — there are some steps they can take to help reduce the risk. In addition to adopting healthier lifestyle habits, getting a specific screening — the coronary artery calcium or CAC score — can help detect early signs of heart disease, reports Fox News. The CAC score is a specialized Computed Tomography or CT scan that measures calcium buildup in the walls of the heart's arteries, according to board-certified cardiologist Dr. Robert Segal, founder of Manhattan Cardiology. He said, "This calcium points to the accumulation of plaque that can cause heart disease." The higher the score, the more calcium in the arteries, thus a greater likelihood of a heart attack, stroke or other cardiac issue.  In 1 Corinthians 6:19, the Apostle Paul asks, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.”  New abortion battle opening up over state shield laws And finally, the national abortion battle is moving to a new front, and it's one that stretches across state lines, reports The Epoch Times. A telemedicine abortion provider in New York has thrust the state's abortion shield law into the spotlight, setting the stage for an unprecedented state-against-state clash on one of the nation's most divisive issues. Abortionist Maggie Carpenter of New Paltz, New York, was fined in Texas and charged in Louisiana for providing abortion kill pills to patients in the two states, where the procedure is all but banned. Judge Bryan Gantt of Collin County, Texas, ordered Carpenter to pay $100,000 in penalties, plus attorney's fees, for prescribing the abortion kill pill to a woman near Dallas in violation of Texas law. He also barred the doctor from prescribing abortion medication to future Texas patients. The February 13th ruling was made just two days after Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed a warrant for Carpenter's arrest and extradition to his state to stand trial for allegedly prescribing abortion kill pills to a pregnant minor. In this episode, Damian and I in some ways continue that discussion, because Damian is also interested in unifying principles of ecological psychology and neuroscience. However, he is approaching it from a different perspective that Louie. What drew me originally to Damian was a paper he put together with a bunch of authors offering their own alternatives to the computer metaphor of the brain, which has come to dominate neuroscience. And we discuss that some, and I'll link to the paper in the show notes. But mostly we discuss Damian's work studying the fractal structure of our behaviors, connecting that structure across scales, and linking it to how our brains and bodies interact to produce our behaviors. Along the way, we talk about his interests in cascades dynamics and turbulence to also explain our intelligence and behaviors. So, I hope you enjoy this alternative slice into thinking about how we think and move in our bodies and in the world. Damian's website.
