I'm pleased to interview one of our Biz Book Publishing Hub's Founding Partners. Our Hub Partners are experts who support entrepreneurs along their author journey. Today's guest has dedicated her career to helping others build meaningful connections. She specializes in empowering introverts to develop a sense of self-worth, discover their community, and pursue the careers of their dreams. Having grown up painfully shy and feeling like an outsider, she once believed that forming deep, authentic connections with many people was impossible, which held her back from trying. However, everything changed as she embraced leadership roles and began to reveal a more outgoing side of herself. Since then, she has been on a mission to reframe what it means to be an introvert. Initially leading by example, she now helps others through her company, Confident Introvert. Through corporate workshops, webinars, and private one-on-one coaching, she empowers introverts to enhance their networking skills. To further share her insights, she wrote “Confident Introvert: A Practical Guide to Connecting with Others at Networking Events and Beyond.” She is a Hub Partner because she collaborates with nonfiction authors looking to blend strategy with personal storytelling from an empowered, heart-centered perspective. *Aristotle's relentless quest to categorize everything has had a massive impact on philosophical and scientific thinking over the last 2,000 years. *His very rational, left-brain way of seeing is the essence of Western civilization. *The Nicomachean Ethics (dedicated to his son, Nicomachus) is the best expression of Aristotle's moral philosophy. It provides a recipe for the good life that is still discussed and applied today. *The good life is one where reason is taken into account at all levels. One should act with the appropriate balance, rather than live a life of unrestrained action or bland asceticism. *Pleasures should not be ignored, nor should they control one's life entirely. A person should be brave when necessary, but should not put themselves into pointless danger. *Happiness is not pleasure, but a by-product of a meaningful life, and meaning tends to come from striving and self-discipline. *By carefully weighing each decision with the end of a good life in mind, we can all live in a way that brings the highest goal and reward: happiness. *Through his discussion of his early life and studies, his long career in law enforcement and role in the spotlight of various Clinton and Trump controversies, ex-FBI head James Comey examines what it takes to be an effective, ethical leader. *Comey led the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails that some believe tipped the 2016 election result in Donald Trump's favor. *Getting to the truth was crucial, but so too was running the investigation independently from the inevitable political pressures. *After Trump was elected, Comey battled to maintain the independence of the FBI. He describes his encounters with the president and the difficult legal and moral situations he was placed in. *A Higher Loyalty provides a gripping insider's look into the highest echelons of American government and the personal dilemmas Comey faced in upholding the FBI's – and his own – integrity. *In Shoe Dog, the famously reticent founder of Nike opens up to tell the story of how he transformed a $50 loan into a multibillion-dollar business. *Opening with Knight on a brisk morning run, aged 24, we're treated to a description of the almost divine manner in which the idea for starting a shoe company first strikes. *Yet the actual making of the future megabrand was founded on Knight's own athletic prowess and business acumen, not to mention his dogged determination. *While his college friends secured “proper jobs” and his father scolded him for “jackassing around” with sports shoes, Knight persevered. By selling shoes from the boot of his car, he managed to turnover $8,000 in his first year. *At the heart of his burgeoning business was a desire to capture the thrill of competition, to do work that didn't feel like working. *As well as providing insights into the highs and lows of running a newly formed company, Shoe Dog shows what happens when you stop playing by society's rules and decide to follow your heart. *Despite the attention-grabbing title, this isn't a guide for rebels without a cause, keen to flip the middle finger at society and authority. Instead, it's an unusually deep and thought-provoking look into the human experience. *Mining his own memories of being expelled from school for drug possession, travelling around the world seducing women, coming to terms with his parents' divorce, and struggling to forge a career as a blogger, Manson presents a unique and intriguing life philosophy that cuts through the empty promises of clichéd self-help manuals. *The “subtle art” of the title poses a challenge: stop chasing other people's visions of happiness, identify your personal “things to give a fuck about” and stick to them. *Manson doesn't pretend this counterintuitive approach guarantees eternal wealth and happiness – this is not that kind of book – but he's convinced it will give you a shot at a pretty good life. *Banned from elite schools due to the circumstances of his birth, Leonardo propelled his own education through endless reading, observation and experimentation. *He found refuge in the world of art, where his paintings of sacred dramas and Earth-based beauty astonished contemporaries. *Today, most of us know the name Leonardo da Vinci and something of his genius, but little of the full breadth of his creative impact and achievements. *Acclaimed biographer Walter Isaacson's richly illustrated book, published ahead of the fifth centenary of Leonardo's death, fills the gaps. He uses as his primary source material the extant notebooks – 7,200 pages survive, scattered in collections across the world, teeming with sketches and jottings – which demonstrate Leonardo's insatiable curiosity about the world and his understanding of the interconnectedness of nature. *The book tracks da Vinci's astonishing advances in art and technology which helped power Europe's cultural rebirth. It also brings alive da Vinci the man, the original Renaissance man, revealing the ways he was both ahead of his time, and of his time. *Countless books have been written about him, but The Essays of Warren Buffett (first published in 1997) is the only edited compendium of writings from the ‘Sage of Omaha' himself. *Buffett's eagerly anticipated annual letters to shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway contain valuable insights into his philosophy and idiosyncratic investing style, plus many simple nuggets of wisdom that everyone – multimillionaire or not – can benefit from. *Despite their age, the basic lessons in these essays have not dated. His overarching message, unusual yet undeniably successful, is that if you work with people you like and trust, and the financial fundamentals are sound, prosperity will take care of itself. *The example set by the esteemed CEO himself, who still lives in his birthplace, Omaha, Nebraska, in the house he bought in the 1950s, remains a truly inspiring one. *Sebastian Junger's work as a journalist and film-maker in war zones led him to some startling facts about conflict and hardship: people are often happier in times of war than in peace; disasters are sometimes recalled more fondly than vacations or weddings; and mental illness increases the richer a society becomes. *Rather than hardship, what people cannot bear is the feeling that they are unnecessary, not part of some tight group that needs them and looks out for them. *History bears this out: in the early days of North America's settlement by Europeans, many white captives of American Indians, once freed, chose to go back to tribal life. *And many of the soldiers who Junger met admitted they didn't just struggle to find civilian life meaningful, they actually missed the war experience. *Junger pulls these facts together into a compelling argument about the intrinsically tribal nature of human beings and the dreadful cost of the de-tribalization of modern life. *Katharine Graham had an image as a cultured society hostess who held court from a grand Washington residence, and as the friend of US presidents and their wives. *But this image omits the less fabulous details of her life and the decades of hard work to make The Washington Post into the institution it became. *Personal History is partly the story of the building of that enterprise, but it's also a leadership book. *Graham never intended or wanted to lead, but she became one of the most powerful media figures in America, with an inside view into some of the biggest events in 20th-century history, from John F Kennedy's death to Watergate. *Her story tells us that not only are there no born leaders, but all of us can be transformed by situations thrust upon us. *Our brains are machines that are always simplifying and approximating, focusing on some detail that captures our attention. Those details may be important, but we are only a brain within a vast universe, and our biases often lead us to bad predictions. *Drawing on his groundbreaking forecasting work, Nate Silver surveys the field of prediction and discusses how to identify a meaningful signal in amongst a barrage of data. *Only forecasting that arises from many points of data, both quantitative and qualitative, and that tries to take account of all biases, is likely to be correct. *The only way to become better at forecasts, Silver says, is to make more of them. *Anyone in the field of prediction has to be constantly taking in not just new points of data, but getting more and more rigorous about how they assess the data. Otherwise, you start to lose the signals for the noise. *The story of Steve Jobs's rise, fall and restoration at Apple resembled a Greek epic, and Walter Isaacson was fascinated by the chance to reconstruct this odyssey. *Like the fabled Icarus, Jobs tested the limits of technology and design to soar ever higher. *But while he took a number of nosedives – descending for a time from the heights of Apple's leadership – he never totally crashed to Earth, but was held aloft by his imagination and peerless intuition about the future. *That remarkable inventiveness helped Apple launch a series of planet-changing products, led by Jobs's vision of the sublime integration of art, design, ideas and technology. *In later life, Isaiah Berlin regretted calling his essay The Hedgehog and the Fox, but it's an undoubtedly intriguing title. *While it investigates the two ways of approaching knowledge, that of the fox who ‘knows many things' and the hedgehog who ‘knows one big thing' – outlining what would become a key principle of modern cultural theory – the essay's real subject matter is the Leo Tolstoy's view of history. *Berlin had studied his fellow Russian Tolstoy's work (he had also translated Russian literature), and viewed Tolstoy as a first-rate philosopher. In analysing War and Peace, and keeping in mind the aforementioned wildlife imagery, he reveals the fundamental tension between the two approaches. *This tension is at the heart of Tolstoy's philosophy: the hedgehog-like yearning for a unifying Truth despite the fox-like acceptance of everyday life in all its infinite and unknowable variety. *Parenting can be tough work, and at times it can feel like just surviving is the most you're able to do. But psychotherapists Siegel and Bryson show that the most difficult moments are actually opportunities to thrive – you just need to use integration. *Integration means connecting the two sides of your – and your child's – brain. *This can occur both horizontally, left brain to right brain, or vertically, ‘upstairs' brain to ‘downstairs' brain. *It's about engaging both the emotional and logical parts of the brain and understanding how these sides develop at different stages in your child. *Eminently practical and engaging, the strategies and techniques in The Whole-Brain Child will help your children lead connected, meaningful and balanced lives. This leads to bloody battles among competitors who are forced to keep reducing prices while continuously spending money on incremental improvements in product quality. *If they are successful at this, they will merely stay afloat in red oceans. *If dying is a certainty, dying early is almost always a choice. *This is the thread running through Michael Greger's How Not To Die. Backed up by a catalogue of studies, Greger compellingly demonstrates how we can prevent, treat and even reverse our most common chronic diseases. *The subtitle is Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease. *Greger argues that to avoid the fifteen leading causes of death and disease in the developed world, all it takes is one simple, if sometimes challenging, dietary change: a whole-food, plant-based diet. Theme 1: We are all going to die - 0:29 Theme 2: The dark motivations of the food industry - 8:56 Theme 3: How not to die early - 14:35 Like what you hear? Book Insights are formal, structured summary, analysis and exploration of a bestselling nonfiction book. Each episode is read by a professional voice actor and will introduce a new title selected specifically for its value to your work and life. Book Lounge episodes are casual discussions about the book, the author, and anything else that comes along through the course of conversation. It's more of a broad chat about how the book relates to current, everyday life. Should I listen to both the Book Insight and the Book Lounge episode on the same book? Sure! Each episode works fine as a standalone piece, so no requirement to listen to both or to listen in any particular order, but we definitely recommend (and think you'll enjoy!) both. Think of it like reading a book and liking it so much you want to chat about it on the porch with a friend. That is the vibe at the Book Lounge. Like what you hear? *Most great companies enjoyed years of obscurity before their great results compelled the world to look at them. In fact, they seemed just like any other company until a certain ‘transition point' saw them leave the pack behind. *These leaps into greatness did not occur through revolution. Contrary to popular opinion, these firms did not get in an expensive new CEO to turn things around. *This is actually the mark of a mediocre company. And although the remarkable results of great companies sometimes make it look like their success happened quickly, the ‘leap' only happened after years of effort, what Jim Collins calls ‘pushing against the flywheel'. *The great companies all had leaders that were surprisingly humble, not charismatic, and put in place a culture of total honesty. *Once the company was crystal clear on its reason for being, it could be super-ambitious and vault past any competitors. *The old-world method of mass advertising through TV and radio was hugely successful for big corporations. With the arrival of the internet, everything changed. *Traditional marketing is about trying to sell something to someone, trying to get something out of them. The new way is almost the opposite. It's about generosity, listening, and making a connection that lasts. *New opportunities now exist for anyone to reach an audience with a new idea, cause or product launch. If you care enough about your audience to create true connection you can make change happen. *Marketing should always be about the customer's problem, not helping the company to make more sales. That sounds counterintuitive, but it's only through generosity and genuine interest in people that you can make your message or product succeed. *This book's subtitle, You Can't be Seen Until You Learn to See, reinforces the idea that marketing should be grounded in empathy.
