Jason Teasley, Chae Tate and Mark Radulich review movies currently on streaming services: The Wiz/Purple Rain/DreamGirls Movie Review! First up is The Wiz (1978). Then we move on to Purple Rain (1984). Finally we review Dreamgirls (2006).The Wiz is a 1978 American musical fantasy adventure film directed by Sidney Lumet. Adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical, the film reimagines the classic children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum with an African American cast. Dorothy, a 24-year-old teacher from Harlem, is magically transported to the urban-fantasy Land of Oz. On her travels seeking help from the mysterious Wiz, Dorothy befriends a Scarecrow, a robot called Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion. The Wiz was theatrically released the following year on October 24, 1978, to critical and commercial failure. The film received generally negative reviews from critics, with many unfavorably comparing the film to its source material. Some critics criticized the casting of Ross as Dorothy, while others criticized the direction of Lumet, who was considered a poor choice for directing a musical. Despite its initial failure, critics have become more favorable in recent years, and it has become a cult classic among audiences, Ross's fanbase, Jackson's fanbase and Oz enthusiasts.Purple Rain is a 1984 American romantic rock musical drama film scored by and starring Prince in his acting debut. Developed to showcase his talents, it contains several concert sequences, featuring Prince and his band The Revolution. The film is directed by Albert Magnoli, who later became Prince's manager, from a screenplay by Magnoli and William Blinn. The cast also features Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day, Olga Karlatos and Clarence Williams III.It grossed $70.3 million worldwide, against its $7.2 million budget. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. Publications and critics have regarded Purple Rain as one of the greatest musical films. In 2019, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".Dreamgirls is a 2006 American musical drama film written and directed by Bill Condon and jointly produced and released by DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures. Adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name, Dreamgirls is a film à clef, a work of fiction taking strong inspiration from the history of the Motown record label and its superstar act the Supremes. The story follows the history and evolution of American R&B music during the 1960s and 1970s through the eyes of a Detroit girl group known as "The Dreams" and their manipulative record executive. The film adaptation features an ensemble cast, starring Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles and Eddie Murphy with Jennifer Hudson, Danny Glover, Anika Noni Rose and Keith Robinson in supporting roles. In addition to the original compositions by composer Henry Krieger and lyricist Tom Eyen, four new songs, composed by Krieger with various lyricists, were added for the film. The film marks the acting debut of Hudson, a former American Idol contestant.Dreamgirls debuted in four special road show engagements starting on December 4, 2006, before its nationwide release on December 15, 2006. With a production budget of $80 million, Dreamgirls is one of the most expensive films to feature a predominant African-American starring cast in American film history. The film received positive reviews from critics, who particularly praised Condon's direction, the soundtrack, costume and production design, and performances of the cast, in particular Hudson and Murphy, and was also a commercial success, grossing $155.4 million worldwide.[4] At the 79th Academy Awards, the film received a leading eight nominations, winning Best Supporting Actress (for Hudson), and Best Sound Mixing. At the 64th Golden Globe Awards, it won three awards, including for the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
Continuing their conversations about films featuring Best Supporting Acting Oscar winning performances, Madeline, Julian and Emilio dive into a film they had yet to see: 'Dreamgirls', the 2006 film adaptation of the Broadway musical, starring Jamie Foxx, Beyonce, Anika Noni Rose, Danny Glover, and Jennifer Hudson, whose portrayal of Effie White earned her an Academy Award in her film debut. The group gets into its status as a "film a clef" with many references to Motown history and associated artists, the unstable foundation (narratively speaking) upon which "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" sits, as well as that song's undeniable power. They dig into the 2007 Oscars win (and snub) that is a huge part of this film's legacy, Beyonce's irrepressible voice, the distracting brief appearance of John Krasinski (looking way too much like Jim Halpert), other possible directors who could have brought this musical to the screen, and so much more! On this episode, Matt & Eric review Barry Jenkins' Mufasa: The Lion King starring Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Tiffany Boone, Donald Glover, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, Blue Ivy Carter, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.
For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Nadia Dalimonte, Josh Parham & Tom O'Brien to review and discuss the latest film from director Barry Jenkins, "Mufasa: The Lion King," starring Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Tiffany Boone, Donald Glover, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, Blue Ivy Carter & Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. We say it's the latest film from Barry Jenkins, but it doesn't look or feel like any of his previous works, as he decided to undertake the sequel to the poorly received but financially successful 2019 remake of "The Lion King." What did we think of Jenkins's direction? Was he able to elevate this material? How did we feel about the visuals, music, and voice performances? Tune in as we discuss these topics, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... The King has returned! Barry Jenkins' Lion King prequel - Mufasa: The Lion King - has released in theaters and I had the chance to check it out just recently. The Lion King is my favorite animated film of all-time but beyond further reflection and pondering, the remake was quite a big letdown that lacked much of the soul and creativity of that original animated film. That's why I was very skeptical about Barry Jenkins' prequel and I wanted nothing more than to be excited about more movies set in the continuity of The Lion King. Barry Jenkins' involvement certainly had my curiosity piqued though. Did the movie win me over, or is this yet another soulless live-action Disney film? Find out in this review! This week, Bryan's brain is a level of goo that can only be described as...disturbing. However, before things get weird the guys discuss the 2006 masterpiece, Dreamgirls, starring an ensemble cast that includes Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Danny Glover (sadly no Donald), and Anika Noni Rose, just to name a few. In this film, we see a fictionalized retelling of the creation of Motown as three up-and-coming singers go from backup singers to super stars under the watchful eye of Curtis Taylor. At the same time, the world changes as do members of the group as Curtis grows in power in the music industry. Then...things get really weird. Sorry....For now, though...Enjoy our take on DreamgirlsSupport the show
Episode 126 - 5 Things We're Looking Forward To! 5 Things We're Looking Forward To! Hey everyone, I'm Mike, she's Sophie, that's Brenda, and and he's Grogu, and we're On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 126 for June 13, 2022, and today our feature topic is 5 Things We're Looking Forward To! Our trip is right around the corner, and we are looking forward to at least five things for our trip. Grab your favorite beverage, sit back, and relax, and tell us in the comments below what you think! Here's the rundown of what we talked about: Cheddar from the Big CheeseMike: According to Anika Noni Rose, who is the voice actor of Princess Tiana from Princess and the Frog, the re-imagined themeing of Splash Mountain will be completed in 2024 and will open at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Officially, Disney has not confirmed the timing for the renovation, but more information may be released at the end of the month.Brenda: What a special moment at Walt Disney World. The resort welcomed several of the Special Olympics USA Games athletes to the Magic Kingdom. They were celebrated as honorary grand marshals in a parade down Main Street, U.S.A. The Special Olympics games this year are in Orlando, with the majority of the events being held at the Wide World of Sports complex. There's an awesome YouTube video about it in the show notes, check it out: Disney World Welcomes Special Olympics Athletes With Glittering Parade | Walt Disney World ResortSophie: Coming to Disney+ on August 10th – “I am Groot!” This series of original shorts – five in all – will focus on Baby Groot. Vin Diesel, who is the voice of Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, also will voice him for the series.Sophie: Lastly, coming back to Walt Disney World starting June 29th - the Minnie Van Service! It is handled through the Lyft app and is only for transportation around the resort – it will not go to the airport at this time.Connect with us! Here's what she added: Neck wrap cooling towels, the big huge new hand fans, or a small one, tank tops, get one of the insulated tervis style canteens or cups filled with ice, stay cold all day even in hot vehicles. When entering the park, walk through the long street stores in the AC instead of the main street to stay cool. Biggest mistake constantly made: DO NOT wear spirit jerseys during the months of April thru mid December, people wear them then complain it's so hot. January/ February is the best time for those. After a 10-day closure, the attraction reopened on Friday, June 3rd. Still no official word on what the cause of the incident was, but a former Disneyland Maintenance Cast Member told MiceChat that the ride vehicles break down regularly and curcuit breakers in each car will cause the vehicle to stop when problems arise. – https://www.ocregister.com/2022/06/03/disneyland-reopens-radiator-springs-racers-after-smoking-car-closes-ride-for-more-than-a-week/ and https://www.micechat.com/322588-disneyland-news-radiator-springs-racers-incident-blue-bayou-return-info/ and https://disneyland.disney.go.com/dining/disneyland/fantasmic-dinner-packages/availability-modal/ Guests at Disneyland can dine at a favorite restaurant that has recently reopened in a limited capacity. The Blue Bayou has returned and is not taking online reservations, but guests can join the walk-up wait list for lunch or dinner at the podium at the restaurant, or through the Disneyland mobile app. Pirates of the Caribbean is still closed for refurbishment, so the view may not be as magical as normal. The Fantasmic! dining package lists reservation times starting on June 16th. – https://twitter.com/DisneyParks/status/1532803837068824578 MiceChat was able to obtain aerial photos of Toon Town progress this week. From the air, we can see that all of the pavement in the land has been removed and is currently dirt. The facade of the El CapiTOON theater is looking more and more complete. The area where the new park will be located has been cleared and awaiting work to start. Both fountains in the land have also been removed, along with the gazebo in front of the City Hall building. – https://www.micechat.com/323486-disneyland-update-new-views-booking-up-locking-out/ The former entrance to Tarzan's Treehouse has come out from behind walls this week. The area is much more open now for guest traffic heading out of Adventureland toward the bridge over the Pirates queue. Once again, there is not any theming on the new concrete. The lack of the entrance also allows parts of New Orleans Square to be visible throughout Adventureland. – https://www.micechat.com/323486-disneyland-update-new-views-booking-up-locking-out/ We are one week into June, and Celebrate Soulfully has officially kicked off at Disneyland. In Disney California Adventure, groups have been performing at the Hollywood Pictures Backlot stage, and in front of Carthay Circle daily, and seasonal food offerings scattered about. – https://www.micechat.com/323486-disneyland-update-new-views-booking-up-locking-out/ For anyone who has never seen Fantasmic! or would like some tips on how to best experience it, the Orange County Register posted some tips. Among the best tips are to make sure to find a spot in front of one of the mist screens. They are located in front of the island, and on both sides. If you find yourself in the middle of the screens, the view isn't as good. The other stand out tip is to catch the second show of the night. The second show is always less crowded and it is impossible to sit for hours holding a spot since the entire area is cleared after the first show, and fireworks afterward. The longest you will have to wait is about an hour. – https://www.ocregister.com/2022/06/03/7-tips-for-watching-the-return-of-fantasmic-at-disneyland/ Much like the electrical parade, there is a favorite treat at Disneyland that keeps on returning. The Fluffernutter churro is available once again at Willie's Churros on Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure. The churro is a standard churro, topeed with a peanut butter sauce, marshmallow sauce, and chocolate chips. The churro is available for $6.75. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2022/06/review-fantastic-fluffernutter-churro-returns-to-disney-california-adventure/ When we were there last month, there was a line of walls up in front of Ariel's Undersea Adventure. Those walls have finally come down to reveal that they were just replacing the concrete in this area. This is just some of the walkway repaving that has been going on around the entire resort. – https://www.micechat.com/323486-disneyland-update-new-views-booking-up-locking-out/ Discussion Topic: Nicolasa from the Disneyana Fan Club
"There is no way I am kissing a frog and eating a bug on the same day!" It's the final week of The Frog Prince Month, which means it's Disney week! We are taking a look at Disney's version of this story, 2009's The Princess and the Frog, starring Anika Noni Rose, Bruno Campos, Keith David, Jennifer Cody, John Goodman, Oprah Winfrey, and more! This animated movie, loosely based on the book The Frog Princess by E. D. Baker, is a little bit meta as it inverts the classic tale. When a frog appears to Tiana, a hard-working woman living in New Orleans in 1926, she agrees to kiss him to make him human again. But the spell backfires, leaving Naveen as he is and turning Tiana into a frog too! Now they're stuck together until they can figure out how to reverse the spell. We discuss this movie's controversial history, Tiana's friendship with Charlotte, the beautiful 2D animation, the affect this movie had on Disney's marketing, similarities to Wicked and The Wizard of Oz, and more!
