The pandemic and the shift to hybrid working have raised the profile and importance of internal comms. Remote workers have different needs and can feel disconnected from their employers if communications aren't handled right, and workers on the whole are more selective about the jobs they take and what they expect from the people they work with. In this episode, internal comms experts Sue Dewhurst, Liam FitzPatrick and Justin Talbot discuss how employers can better engage their people in times of change.

JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Coal will continue to be assessed but should remain in Glencore right now, Glencore CEO Ivan Glasenberg said on Thursday. For the six months to June 30, the London- and Johannesburg-listed diversified mining and marketing company reported that its energy business was down 65% at $0.7-billion on disproportionately impacted lower coal prices. A slide displayed by the company stated that Covid-impacted coal production was 10.1-million tonnes lower year-on-year, with the coronavirus particularly impacting Colombia. Coal price indices in the half-year were 16% to 30% lower with more than 50% of the seaborne thermal coal cost curve currently estimated to be cash negative. “Let’s hope the tonnage cuts that we’re doing in coal has a positive effect and the market looks better for coal, which I think is a key for the balance of this year. But the Ebitda for the year’s spot price is looking very good, around about $10.5-billion, with a $1-billion pick-up. With the recent movement on some of the commodity prices that we’ve seen in the last few days with gold, silver, zinc and copper moving, that’s advantageous for us and hopefully we’ll get more of that in the second half,” Glasenberg said. Coal was a big factor in the energy business being down. Coal production has been reduced in both Colombia and Australia to bring stability to the market. In response to Deutsche Bank head of metals and mining equity research Liam Fitzpatrick, Glasenberg said that the coal market had been hit this year because of Covid, which affected the demand for coal in major importing countries, such as India, which normally imports about 180-million tonnes of coal and which Glencore believed was reducing that by about 35-million tonnes. Glasenberg said China would be reducing coal imports by about 33-million tonnes. “So, we think that demand has been cut by Covid in a 985-million-tonne seaborne market by about 133-million tonnes. However, the coal price has come down, so certain countries have cut production. We believe Indonesia could be down about 50-million tonnes. Our calculations are that the market’s lost supply of about 120-million tonnes. “Demand has reduced more than the supply reductions therefore we’re getting excess supply. It could correct itself with the lower prices. You will have further shutdowns around the world. No doubt Indonesia, which is cash negative, will reduce some of their production. “We’ve reacted like we always do when you have falling commodity prices and oversupply in the market. We’ve put Prodeco on to care and maintenance and we’ve cut seven-million tonnes out of Australia, and hopefully we believe with these actions by ourselves and the Indonesians the market will be back in rebalance and there will be an upward movement on the pricing. “We still have many coal-fired power stations being built around the world. Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and China continue to build new coal-fired power stations so demand continues to grow in those areas. “Naturally, in Europe, demand is decreasing and Europe has gone down considerably to about 40-million tonnes of coal. So, we think the overall scenario on the seaborne market is still okay and should bode well for the future, and in fact we look at future years and believe there will be a shortage because there is no new supply coming into the market. “Regarding our coal business, it’s still a good business for us. It is a cash generator, not as high as it has been in the past, with the falling coal prices. However, even at these lower prices, it still generates cash for the company, with an Ebitda of $1.4-billion at current prices, so still a good Ebitda generator and a cash flow generator for the business. So we’ll continue assessing it, but coal should remain in Glencore right now,” Glasenberg said. “Let’s hope the tonnage cuts that we’re doing in coal have a positive effect and the market looks better for coal, which I think is...

Digital still means differing things, depending on who you ask. So for us at 'Cut the Cliches', we turned to a man for episode five, who has decades of experience in the field, leading his agency through the era of mobile, through to the customer experience focus which his agency has today. Ben Beath, MD at Loud & Clear helps brands transform internally to become more digitally enabled. Simply put, he's taking legacy infrastructure and making processes streamlined for today's increasingly time-poor workforce. This can, and often does involve automation, as we discuss the impact of Industry 4.0 on how jobs are viewed. Ben has worked with some of Australia's leading brands including AGL and FFA, and our man on the ground Liam Fitzpatrick caught up with Ben in his Melbourne office.
Episode three of Cut the Cliches, and host Liam Fitzpatrick is in Sydney to get the thoughts of Steve Sinha COO (and acting-CEO) of the Australian Alliance for Data Leadership. We chat with him back in the middle of winter, when we both had colds and England were still in the World Cup. Discussion topics ranged from his background, the role for agencies, the changing role for marketers, the rise of customer experience and what's next for AADL.
Episode 1 of Cut the Cliches takes host Liam Fitzpatrick to Brisbane to speak with Mark Gustowski, CEO of QUT's Creative Enterprise Australia. We discuss Mark's two decades of startup experience, including his time in the Melbourne scene during the Dot Com boom and London after the 2012 Olympics announcement. Enjoy

Halfway: Made up of eight players, Brisbane based rock band, Halfway injects the unusual combination of banjo, pedal steel guitar, piano, and mandolin into the genre’s usual instrumentation. Three of the members – John Busby, Elwin Hawtin and Chris Dale originally hail from Rockhampton, Central Queensland. After moving to Brisbane and recruiting the like-minded Ben Johnson (bass), Halfway was formed in 2000. Joining shortly after were Dublin born brothers Noel Fitzpatrick (pedal steel) and Liam Fitzpatrick (banjo/mandolin). The finishing touches to the lineup were added with the inclusion of ex-Go-Between John Willsteed (guitar) & Luke Peacock ‘The Bird’ (keys/guitar). Since their formation, the band has released four critically acclaimed albums, the latest being ‘Any Old Love’ in 2014. In 2008, key writers, John Busby and Chris Dale won the Grant McLennan Memorial Fellowship, arguably one of the most prestigious song writing award in Australia. Recorded & mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at The Triffid, Brisbane, 24th of April, 2015. The Scrapes: Formed in Brisbane in early 2009, The Scrapes are an unusual duo who combine feedback drenched guitar and scraping, epic violin. Their music is rooted firmly in the traditions of western classical music while representing an attempt to break the chains of these traditions. It is music that evokes landscapes and acts of nature as well as cerebral landscapes. Inspired equally by composers such as Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass and La Monte Young, sound artists and pioneers of the drone such as Tony Conrad and Spacemen 3, and the dark, demented sounds of the underground of rock music, The Scrapes can be at once immersive and chaotic in a live setting where wild improvisation and high volume come into the fold. Recorded & mixed by Branko Cosic @ 1000hz Recordings Recorded at The Ice Cream Factory, Brisbane, 14th of July, 2012. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 14 August 2015. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
