Have you ever thought, “I want to get better at sharing my faith, but I don't know where to start”? Then this episode is for you! In our new book, “Joyful Outsiders,” we break down six ways that Christians can change culture (without being changed by culture). On today's episode, we're focusing on ambassadors, those who find great joy in sharing the gospel with people who are far from God and seeing them come to faith in Jesus. Joining us to provide such an example is our friend, Patrick Cox. Patrick is the Chief Production Officer at Veterans United Home Loans in Columbia, Missouri. Today, Patrick shares some practical evangelism tips learned through years of sharing his faith through “Faith and Doubt” discussion groups at work. He explains the motivation behind his drive for evangelism, whether or not he ever feels intimidated by the process, and how he addresses people's most intense questions and skepticisms. Plus, what are the most common doubts he encounters? Has he noticed a current shift in the public's opinion on Christianity? How should Christians approach those who have experienced church hurt? Patrick ends by providing some practical guidelines for more effectively sharing your faith. Listen now! Are you an ambassador? Or maybe you're an advisor, trainer, artist, builder, or protester? Find out in our free self-assessment. Our new book, Joyful Outsiders, is coming January 21, 2025. Want to start reading now before release day? Download the first chapter for free. Have you benefitted personally from Truth Over Tribe or seen it have a positive effect on someone you know? have you used the podcast, book, or blog as a catalyst for conversation on polarizing topics? Imagine learning a language that is spoken by only a few hundred people—an Indigenous language that belongs to a people and a land that have been in relationship with each other for countless generations. This is the heart of our episode about Gwich'in language revitalization in the Boreal. Princess Daazhraii Johnson (Neets'aii Gwich'in) is an Indigenous TV and film producer on a patient journey of learning, reclaiming, and revitalizing Gwich'in. The language connects her to the land and to the people who came before her. “Our generation is really making the effort to use the language, and express ourselves in the language, and it's really powerful,” she explains.   Princess and her dear friend Alishia Carlson (also Neets'aii Gwich'in) talk with language journalist Kavita Pillay about the struggles of learning Gwich'in, and the joy with which they approach the effort, especially in relation to the language learning of children. Princess is inspiring a whole new generation to be curious about Indigenous languages through her work as a screenwriter on the Peabody award-winning PBS Kids series Molly of Denali. Later this summer, California could be first American state to ban discrimination on the basis of caste. California's move, and the moves by universities, cities, and towns across the country, to raise issues of caste discrimination has generated a massive controversy that is roiling the Indian American community in the United States. One reporter, the freelance journalist Sonia Paul, has been doggedly pursuing this story for years, even before it became a mainstream news issue. Sonia is an award-winning journalist, writer, producer and story editor based in Oakland, California, and she is the daughter of immigrants from India and the Philippines.Sonia joins Milan on the show this week to talk more about her reporting and the state of caste in America. How American English has borrowed, stolen, and evolved into an imperial language

Language is perhaps our most powerful tool. It has been improved, imposed and modified widely over time. From James Baldwin, to the first settlers in the Plymouth Colony, to beat poets, to hip-hop artists, American English in all its forms has become a global, and imperial language. "Words are never static, they go through changes, and in fact, change is the essential element for any language to thrive," said Ilan Stavans, professor of humanities and Latin American and Latino culture at Amherst College. "We borrow, we steal, that is in American English, from other languages, and also lend words to other languages and that give-and-take is essential." Language is at the forefront of many cultural debates. It both unites and divides us. What language should we use when educating our children? How should we classify cultural dialects or colloquial languages, like Black vernacular English? "There are people who are bringing other languages to English in ways that are not really happening with any other global language, like Chinese for example," said Patrick Cox, host of the popular Subtitle podcast and former editor and reporter for The World. "In that sense, I think it gives English the chance to evolve and transform and take on new, not just words, but phrases and thought patterns in a way that some of those other languages don't." From the ubiquity of English, to understanding how language might help explain our current political moment, we analyze how words both help and hurt our culture on this week's episode of Under the Radar with Callie Crossley guest hosted by Phillip Martin. GUESTS: Ilan Stavans, Professor of Humanities and Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College, and editor of a new book: “The People's Tongue: Americans and the English Language.” Patrick Cox, host of the popular "Subtitle" podcast and former editor and reporter for The World. Patrick is the winner of the Linguistic Society of America's 2019 Linguistics Journalism Award.

My guest today is Patrick Cox and I have to say, he is a very special guest, because I bought his shoes to be cool. Patrick's shoes made you belong to the so called cool Britannia in the 90ties: The band Oasis wore them, glamorous DJs and rockstars, cool Londoners, the cool nightlife world wore them. More than that. The whole fashion world liked Patrick's fashion taste. Patrick was a design super star, his nickname, Janet Jackson gave it to him, was "Party Pat". And Party Pat had everything. Celebrity friends like Elton John lots of money, charm, party stamina, talent, humour, until these things turned out to cover up his old trauma, the one that he experienced at age 4. Patrick never thought about it any more. But a few years ago, Patrick lost everything, his company and his ability to ignore the old trauma with his certified tools: travelling, partying and ignoring. So he tried everything, to save his mental health, but nothing worked. He even told his friends about a possible suicide. Before it was too late, he found toad venom, aka 5 MeoDMT. Toad Venom is found in the poison of Bufo alvarius, a toad native to the Sonoran desert in Mexico. After a few experiences, Patrick said, he didn't hate himself any more. he found out, there was nothing wrong with him. The only question was, who would he be now? Patrick and I talk about how an intervention form Elton Johns feels like, how alcohol lost it's so called cool, why heavy partying and depression are siblings, how generation X never leaned anything about healing. And how trauma, you have experienced so long ago, will catch up with you, even if you have everything you think we should have.

Patrick Cox was the most sought after shoe designer of the 90s, now he is a toad facilitator in Ibiza. When it comes to changes, you can't get much more extreme. Patrick (otherwise known as Party Pat thanks to Janet Jackson) is the creator of the Wannabe, a modern style loafer, wanted and worn by everyone in the Brit Pop era. Every pop star you can think of had them - George Michael, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, the list is endless. The queues to get a pair were huge and at the peak frenzy, as many as 1 million pairs a year were sold. A LONG TIME AGO ON VERONICA MARS: • The themes of the season, bombs and beheadings, combine, as a spring breaker who's been spiking women's drinks gets a bomb strapped around his neck. • The Marses, Matty and the murderheads are still shuffling around their various theories about who the bomber is: Big Dick and Clyde trying to kill the Spring Break business for property prices; or the Maloofs, for reasons that nobody can really be arsed with any more. • Daniel Maloof is regretting ordering the hit on the Carrs, but too late! Dodie and Alonzo have video of them killing them… • ...but one has survived? What a twist! • Not enough jerks for you? This episode features the reappearances of Mercer, Lucky-in-a-wig and Toxic Max! • But in compensation we also see Vinnie, and... LEO! A LONG TIME AGO ON VERONICA MARS: • Daniel Maloof's having a shit one. He is being blackmailed because he was videoed masturbating to a cam girl. He's still being accused of murder by Penn all over the TV. He is kidnapped, strung up, stoned and dickpunched by the Carrs. Then he is rescued by Alonzo and Dodie, who are going to kill him - but Daniel turns the tables! And the other side is also really shitty.  • Sea Sprite Bombing Suspect of the Week is Matty's pick: mole-having gum vending machine-filling Perry, who blows himself up when the police come for him.  • But Veronica doesn't buy that he's a culprit, and with another bomb going off at the end of the episode, the mystery continues. Unsurprisingly. • More surprising is that Veronica actually has some fun! She gets to try on Nicole's punching gloves, drop some E, dance dance dance - then puke puke puke the next morning.  • Keith's also having fun - he and Clyde bond over golf!  • And Penn and his group of Murderheads are, unfortunately, still in our lives, dredging up Lilly Kane's murder, advancing some wild theories about the Sea Sprite bomber - but one does give Veronica the link between the bombing and El Despiadado. Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars season 4 episode 3: Keep Calm and Party On, and probe such mysteries as how Alonzo and Dodie are delivering the heads to El Despiadado back in Mexico; if They Might Be Giants were around too late for Logan's cut-off date for culture; whether Logan's jacket is available in Jenny-size; and whether the show is trying to coin an in-universe version of BDE. Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Hairdressing Icon, Sam McKnight. This episode was an absolute joy for me as it is one of my absolute hair heroes, Sam McKnight.Celebrated session hair stylist, Sam McKnight, is the hairdresser's hairdresser. He boasts a legendary career spanning over four decades encompassing catwalk, editorial and advertising campaigns for fashion houses such as Chanel, Fendi, Balmain, Burberry and Tom Ford. A regular contributor to both British and international Vogues, W, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, i-D and Love, he has over 100 covers to his name from British Vogue alone. McKnight is also a Contributing Beauty Editor at British Vogue. McKnight has collaborated with some of the world's most prominent photographers including Patrick Demarchelier, Mario Testino and Nick Knight. A long-time stylist for the late Princess Diana, McKnight was the creative behind her iconic short, slicked back hairstyle in the now-famous 1990 Demarchelier shoot for British Vogue, a partnership that led to him becoming her personal hair stylist for seven years. One of the original session stylists, McKnight initially trained as a teacher before working as an assistant at a local hairdresser in his native Scotland. Moving to London in the early 1970's, McKnight secured a position at Molton Brown, which at the time was a leading hair salon in London's South Molton Street. He worked on projects for London-based magazines 19 and Honey before landing his first editorial shoot with British Vogue in 1977. While working in London, he was introduced to stylists Liz Tilberis (later editor of British Vogue and Harpers Bazaar US) and Lucinda Chambers (British Vogue), who were instrumental in hiring him for high-profile editorial shoots.McKnight has been bestowed the Lifetime Achievement Award at both the Scottish Fashion Awards and Creative Head Awards 2015. He is hugely respected within the hairdressing community and is often cited as a source of inspiration or named as ‘the hairstylist I would most like to work with' by his peers. On November 2nd 2016, Somerset House launched Hair by Sam McKnight, a major exhibition celebrating McKnight's impressive career. Never before has an exhibition of this kind taken place, looking at hair from a new perspective and celebrating the significant role of session hair styling in both fashion and culture throughout the decades. In tandem, McKnight also released his first book: Hair by Sam McKnight (Rizzoli), a hardback anthology of his magazine covers, editorial shoots and personal insights into working at the heart of the fashion industry.June 2017 saw McKnight launch a brand: Hair by Sam McKnight, in Liberty of London, injecting fashion, glamour and ease into haircare and styling. We are how we speak, right? Well, it's complicated— enough so to spend Subtitle's next four episodes on this question. We'll tell the stories of a diverse collection of people, tracing how each came to speak the way they do. Along the way, we'll ask: Is speech a good barometer of identity? Does anyone truly speak authentically? Why are we so judgmental about how others speak? And how can we overcome our biases? In this first episode, hosts Patrick Cox and Kavita Pillay tell their stories. Jane Setter's book about speech and accent bias is Your Voice Speaks Volumes. Colleen Cotter researches the language of journalism and cultural representation. Dennis Preston is the editor of the Handbook of Perceptual Dialectology. Romona Robinson's memoir is A Dirt Road to Somewhere. Music in this episode by Blue Dot Sessions, Podington Bear, Spectacles Wallet and Watch, Honeycutts, Alan Carlson-Green, Moss Harman, Josef Bel Habib and Arthur Benson. Very few of us have experienced anything quite like the crisis we’re going through now. We don’t know how to describe it, or what to call it, or what to compare it to.Our leaders, though, seem pretty certain. China’s Xi Jinping set the tone in February when he called for a “people’s war” against the virus. On April 1, Donald Trump declared that the US continued to “wage all-out war to defeat the virus.” On April 26, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that every Indian complying with that country’s lockdown “was a soldier in this fight.”French President Emmanuel Macron was perhaps the most succinct. As he prepared to shut his country down in March, he simply told the French people, “We are at war.”Related: Corona Diaries: Open-source project chronicles pandemic life via voice notesIf you think the war metaphor is being overused, you’re not alone. But why is this kind of rhetoric such a go-to for world leaders? And should we consider other metaphors?Metaphors allow us to see one thing in terms of another. Arguably, they are most effective when the comparison transforms our thinking. But there’s a danger in that, too.“The choice of metaphor can affect not just the way in which we talk about something.”Elena Semino, linguist, Lancaster University in Britain“The choice of metaphor can affect not just the way in which we talk about something,” said Elena Semino, a linguist at Lancaster University in Britain. That choice, she said, can also “change the way we think about something and experience it.”Related: 'Stay home or dance with us': Ghana's dancing pallbearers urge social distancingWe’re not at war, we all know that. But our situation bears enough resemblance to life during wartime so as to make the metaphor appealing. The ability of metaphor to change how we think, and maybe act, is at the root of the power of the war metaphor. It is why leaders confronted with this pandemic reached so quickly for the language of bombardment and trenches and sacrifice. They need to convey the peril in the starkest of terms. In a way, they’re all trying to channel the likes of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who of course had to deal with a real war.“What crimes has Hitler and all that Hitler stands for brought upon Europe and the world?” asked Churchill in 1941. “The outrage of the unopposed air bombing applied with calculated and scientific cruelty to helpless populations.”Once Churchill had established the existential nature of the threat, he made his appeal for renewed resistance with a combination of hard truths and optimism.Related: Shutdowns have led to cleaner air quality. Is it sustainable?“Lift up your hearts,” he continued. “All will come right out of the depths of sorrow and of sacrifice.”With a formula as powerful as that, why wouldn’t a president or governor declare that we’re at war with a virus? And why wouldn’t we buy it?“I have to say that I, too, sometimes slip up and fall into that language. But I think it's really important to correct ourselves and think about the impact that can be had when you're using really violent language at a time when people are already anxious and already scared.”Seema Yasmin, Stanford University“I have to say that I, too, sometimes slip up and fall into that language,” said Seema Yasmin who teaches medicine and journalism at Stanford University. “But I think it's really important to correct ourselves and think about the impact that can be had when you're using really violent language at a time when people are already anxious and already scared.”The trouble is, Yasmin says, this stuff is almost hardwired in us. We’ve deployed war metaphors to describe our attempts to control epidemics since at least the mid-1600s when a prominent British doctor called Thomas Sydenham made the comparison.Related: Amid pandemic, Animal Crossing gamers create dreamy ‘islands,’ travel and mingle with friendly (and really cute) animal neighbors“I attack the enemy within,” Sydenham declared. “A murderous array of disease has to be fought against, and the battle is not a battle for the sluggard.”“This might be one of the earliest instances of that kind of violent language in medicine,” Yasmin said. She notes that French biologist Louis Pasteur spoke of infectious diseases as “invading armies that lay siege to our bodies.”Yasmin says that in the 1920s, cancer cells were described as anarchists or Bolsheviks, the enemies of that era. And in 1971, Richard Nixon took aim with his own “war on cancer.”So, are there better ways to talk about our current situation? Lancaster University’s Semino says yes. She oversees a crowdsourced project called Metaphor Menu, which lists the many ways people with cancer think of their condition. Weaponizing their struggle works for some patients, she says. But others prefer to think of being on a journey, or in a difficult relationship — or for one person, like having a stone in her shoe. As for the coronavirus, Semino says it might be time to drop the war talk.“If a war is protracted, people could become fed up with it,” she said. “They could think there is no victory in sight, so the messages could become less effective.”Semino has come across several other metaphors that she thinks work better. The most comprehensive one compares the pandemic to a forest fire.“There are firefighters fighting it directly, such as doctors and nurses,” she said. “But other people have to be vigilant in order not to get in the way and not to be in danger themselves.”The metaphor can be extended. When the main fire appears under control, we might still have to continue to modify our behavior so that it doesn’t flare up again. Even after it has been all but extinguished, smoldering ashes could reignite the forest.“To avoid future fires, you need to look after the wood and the land,” Semino said.If the forest fire metaphor proves inaccurate or unwieldy, Semino has found others on Twitter and elsewhere. These include comparisons with child development, orchestras and parachutes.Social distancing is like asking a string section to play pianissimo: it only works if everyone does it. pic.twitter.com/KowZA7dOHG— Classic FM (@ClassicFM) March 27, 2020Patrick Cox is with the language-themed podcast, Subtitle, which is supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

We hear what London used to be like in the ’80s and why he might have been the bass player for Pink Floyd. He also talks about his decision to join Habitat, setting up with his eponymous brand, and the importance of food to his practice… as well as answering the biggest question of all: what exactly is the scent of Tom Dixon?

We've got another very special on for you this week, dear listeners! Way back at the Sound Education Conference in Boston, we were lucky enough to sit on a "podcasting about language" panel with the likes of Kevin Stroud, Patrick Cox, Mark Sundaram and the one and only Grammar Girl: Mignon Fogarty! Well guess what? Mignon joined us earlier this month for a wordy chat, and here it is! We sincerely doubt there's anyone who knows us who doesn't already know Mignon - she's got a huge following on Twitter and Facebook and her website (https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/grammar-girl) is nothing less than a treasure trove for anyone wanting to improve their writing skills! In this episode, Amy looks at various fractured definitions with "break", Ryan looks at how different history might seem if we studied The Brass Age with "brazen" and Mignon explores the connection between sickness and the stars with "measles". Lexitecture is a podcast about words. In each episode, a Canadian (Ryan) and a Scot (Amy) each present their current favourite word and talk about its origins, current use, and try to puzzle out how it may have gone from A to B. If you love thinking and talking about words, word origins, or just random bits of head-scratching language trivia, this may be the show for you! Please subscribe to us on Google Play Music, iTunes, Stitcher, Pocket Casts or wherever you get your podcasts!   Also, if you enjoy what we do, please give us a great rating on iTunes - it's a huge help in letting other people know we're worth listening to. One can hardly believe it - ANOTHER super special episode! Not only is it another time that Ryan and Amy were able to record an episode in the same room, but we're joined by another special guest! Mark Sundaram (of The Endless Knot) moderated our "podcasting about language" panel (which also included last episode's special guest Kevin Stroud of The History of English Podcast, Mignon Fogarty - Grammar Girl - and Patrick Cox from The World in Words) and presented a talk at the Sound Education conference in Boston with his wife and Endless Knot co-host Aven. He was gracious enough to come along and bring a word of his own to chat about this episode. Because of time constraints on the day we recorded this, we only had time for one word, so the three of us sat around and pondered the long and bizarre history of "sad". Lexitecture is a podcast about words. In each episode, a Canadian (Ryan) and a Scot (Amy) each present their current favourite word and talk about its origins, current use, and try to puzzle out how it may have gone from A to B. A possible cure with side effects is better than no cure when people are dying.   27:00 – The FDA has not adapted to the new model of how personalized medicine works.  30:10 – Scientists did tests on a chemical compound called anatabine and found it be the most effective anti-inflammatory agent ever discovered.   34:00 – There are a number of ways you can rejuvenate the heart muscles when they've been damaged. We thought for a long time that these could not be repaired at all.  39:00 – The Japanese are leading in rejuvenation medicine because they understand their citizens are getting older and fewer Japanese are being born.   42:15 – We have the tech crowd pushing against the roadblocks that cutting-edge medicine is facing.    Mentioned In This Episode: http://www.jasonhartman.com/ http://www.patrickcoxdna.com/   https://www.mauldineconomics.com/

This week on I was just thinking.... “There has been more technological improvement in the last 50 years than in the previous 5, 000,” asserts Patrick Cox, co-editor of Technology Profits Confidential, our brand new research service. Another year has come and gone and where do we find ourselves? We can talk about the births and deaths that occurred last year the decline and advancements of society, but where are we headed this year? The old man with the cicle has made way for the baby in the diaper. Will we face a new year filled with wonder and expectation or is this another brick in the road to our enslavement? Last year we saw the rise in new technology, but where is all this heading? Individually one invention can be exciting, but when you put it all together it looks a lot like 1984 on steroids!   Join me Friday night @ 8pm eastern and 6pm pacific to talk about it.
