In this 57th episode of the SUPPAUL Podcast, Paul Clark talks with Brent Allen. The discussion includes his full circle from being raised in Oklahoma, becoming an entrepreneur in the outdoor industry, moving to the California coast, and then back to reestablish his roots in Oklahoma. We talk about industrial whitewater parks in the South, inclusiveness, sustainability, and the value of outdoor pursuits. I feel whitewater is too often a whitewashed sport. It's wonderful to see opportunities for people of color and First Nations people to discover new outlets for creative self-expression. Brent was Lifestyle Director at the Riversports Rapids park in Oklahoma City, OK. He's now enthusiastic about what he's seeing at the WOKA park recently built along the border of Oklahoma and Arkansas. He has been involved in the SUP industry since 2008 originally working with surftech as a consultant then transitioning to Starboard as an Ocean Ambassador in 2016. Also with Kialoa then Werner paddles . He has worked in the lifestyle sports industry for 27 years and has created 2 non profits built around ocean advocacy and inland waterways. He has competed in numerous endurance sports from Ironman Triathlon to M2O. He is truly an ambassador for the industry. Thank you for listening. “Be authentic, be you. Don't try to be anything you're not. Don't try to be everything to everybody. That's another big piece. That's where a lot of people tend to lose because they get caught up in not really knowing who their customer is and what they stand for. They truly want to be everything to everybody.”We are so excited to share this conversation with Jason Pirock, the Director of Marketing for Aparium. Aparium makes “hotels that matter'' and provides “the most unique experiences in the most distinctive places”. When the founders saw an opportunity to bring elevated, upscale, boutique hotels to secondary and tertiary markets that's exactly what they did. Creating and mastering a niche in translocal hospitality, Aparium brings passing guests together while connecting with local communities and the people that inhabit them. Not only does Jason manage a marketing campaign for the Aparium brand itself, he also oversees each of the individual properties in the portfolio, personalizing each brand identity to the specific market. The properties alone don't speak for themselves so it's crucial the teams in each market are genuine and truly care about the guests and their experiences. Anita Bhagwandas I’m a brand consultant and journalist who has worked with the likes of Freuds, YSL, Dove, Superdrug, Braun, L’Oréal and many more. I’ve been on Woman’s Hour, BBC’s Asian Network and ITV’s This Morning talking all things race, beauty and wellness. My words have also appeared in The Guardian, Guardian Weekend, Cosmopolitan, Stylist, Marie Claire, Sunday Telegraph, Esquire, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, i-D, NME and Kerrang! to name but a few. I’m now a Contributing Beauty and Lifestyle Director at Glamour UK alongside my freelance and consultancy work. But I’ve also held some seriously prestigious staff roles in the last ten years too. I was Beauty Director at Stylist and stylist.co.uk leading the digital beauty strategy for the brand and pushing the agenda for inclusive beauty to the max (#skinpositivity, colourism, being fat-shamed at spas – you named it, I covered it.) Prior to this I was Acting Features Director at Stylist, coming up with cover feature concepts and flying across the world to interview CEOs, film directors and celebrities at the drop of a hat. I was also Senior Beauty Editor at Marie Claire (winning many awards for my investigative beauty journalism and being nominated for a BSME Columnist of the Year) and launching their plus size fashion column. Before that I was the first Beauty & Health Editor at Women’s Health UK, where I also won both Johnson & Johnson’s and Fashion Monitor’s Journalist of the year awards. I started my beauty career at Stylist when the magazine first launched – becoming the figurehead for calling out racism in the beauty industry after a feature I wrote about it went viral. I’ve always been part beauty activist, part journalist – and above all have a passion for using beauty and wellness as a lens for cultural and social commentary. Hello and welcome to Beauty Island! As I mentioned in Tuesday’s episode, to mark the halfway point of season two, instead of a normal beauty island episode, this week we have two bonus Five Favs from two of my guests so far. Jules Sebastian was earlier this week and today, is former ELLE Beauty Director Amy Starr. As you might know by now - or maybe you don’t! - my name is Brittany Stewart and I’m the voice inside your ears aka the host of Beauty Island. In each main episode, I ask a special guest about the eight beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. But, in Five Favs, the focus is on the beauty products in their makeup bags they’re loving right now.Amy Starr is the former Beauty and Lifestyle Director of ELLE Australia. Her main episode dropped a few weeks ago, so just scroll down a little on your feed if you haven’t listened to that already. In Five Faves, she talks about nearly-always-sold-out foundation alternative she loves, and why you should never apply a serum to a dry face. This was one piece of beauty advice that blew my mind. As someone with over a decade of experience at Australia’s top magazines, I couldn’t not ask about where she thinks there’s still a future for print magazines. If you enjoy the podcast, you can subscribe to make sure you never miss an episode. And if you really like it, please consider rating five stars and writing a review about why you love Beauty Island. It helps other people find the podcast and therefore allows me to keep making it!Enjoy.Follow Amy:Instagram: @amystarrFollow host Brittany Stewart:Instagram: @brittanybeautybts @beautyislandpodcastEmail: beautyislandpodcast@gmail.comSubscribe to It's A Beauty! Margie’s castaway this week is Pip McCormac. Pip is the Lifestyle Director for Red Magazine, he oversees all the food and interiors content in the best-selling women's monthly title in its field. He formerly worked as the Food and Interiors Editor at Sunday Times Style and he has also created a recognisable voice for himself with his popular recipe review blog Pip Cooks The Books. He has now published 2 beautiful books all about cooking with edible flowers and growing your own herbs. I wanted to catch up with Pip and find out the inspiration for the books, all about his glamourous job and of course pick his brains about the best places to eat in London. I don’t know about you but I need to make that delicious sounding 24 hours eating extravagnza in London happen immediately – sounds so good! What are we all thinking about the unusual combination of peanut butter, tomato, cucumber and mint? There is never any judgement on this podcast and I vow to keep an open mind until I try it! Thank you for listening and until next time – you can come and find me on instagram @madebymargie and you can read about other episodes at desertislanddishespodcast .com
