snyopsis- Challenging the narrative on Palestine in this edition of our monthly Meet the BIPOC Press series : "The Encampments" documentary,  and its creators aim to push back against the dominant narrative on Palestine, highlighting the difference between the corporate media coverage and those who have no allegiance to money or corporations, and sparking a wider conversation about the world's first live streamed genocide. “The Encampments” co-produced by Macklemore, brings viewers into the anti-Gaza war protests at Columbia University and gets up close and personal with leaders including Mahmoud Khalil, the student negotiator currently detained by ICE in violation of a court's order. In this special episode in our series Meet the BIPOC Press, Laura sits down with Sueda Polat and Grant Miner, two of Khalil's colleagues in the encampments, who were suspended and expelled, respectively, as well as the film's co-director, journalist Kei Pritsker of BreakThrough News to discuss how the film came to be, and where the situation stands today as well as what's missing and who is misrepresented in commercial news. All that, plus a commentary from Laura on Columbia University's move to suspend four college journalists “being too close to the action.”“I don't really participate as a Jewish person, I participate as an activist and a person of conscience that is Jewish . . . There's a very insidious narrative that was basically, ‘If you're not Jewish and you're not Palestinian, then talking about this is strange. Having an opinion on this conflict is strange and you should just stop talking about it because you're probably only motivated by antisemitism.' I want to push back and say that anybody can have an opinion on this. It's the world's first livestreamed genocide.” - Grant MinerGuests:• Grant Miner: Columbia University Student Activist, The Encampments; President, SWC-UAW 2710• Sueda Polat: Columbia University Student Activist, The Encampments;  Graduate Student Human Rights• Kei Pritsker: Co-Director, The Encampments, Journalist, BreakThrough News Watch the special report released on YouTube May 23rd 5pm ET; PBS World Channel May 25th, and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode). In 'Meanwhile', Jacqueline Woodson and Catherine Gund weave together the words of literary legends to explore the intersection of art, grief, and social justice.Description: James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Muhammad Ali and Nina Simone are some of the artists featured in the moving new film “Meanwhile”, from National Book Award-winner Jacqueline Woodson and Emmy-nominated producer & director Catherine Gund. Their meditations on grief, art, breath and more are beautifully woven together as the film poses the question, how do you keep breathing amidst the chaos? Catalyzed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the police killing of George Floyd, Gund and Woodson tap into our shared existence. The artists featured in the docu-poem, with a haunting soundtrack by Meshell Ndegeocello, work through questions of race, political violence, resistance and identity — so much of what shapes our lives and relationships. “This is not a love letter to this country but to us inside this country,” says Woodson in the film. “We see us. We love us. We make eye contact and nod to us”. In this conversation with Laura Flanders, the trio of longtime friends discuss the film from Aubin Pictures, the losses they experienced in the 80s, and how the arts and poetry can compel us to enact change. Can we reclaim the “meanwhile”? In a chilling conversation with Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor, the co-authors unpack their Guardian essay on "End Times Fascism," exposing how today's billionaires and right-wing leaders aren't just profiting from global crises—they're actively accelerating them. Find out why, in this chilling conversation with Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor, co-authors of a revelatory essay on "End Times Fascism" in the Guardian. “Today's rightwing leaders and their rich allies are not just taking advantage of catastrophes, shock-doctrine and disaster-capitalism style,” write Klein and Taylor, “but simultaneously provoking, planning and seeking to profit off apocalypse.” These are deeply dangerous times, Taylor and Klein argue: “Trump 2.0's economic project is a Frankenstein's monster of the industries driving all of these threats—fossil fuels, weapons, and resource-ravenous cryptocurrency and AI.” As the Right prepares for the end of life as we know it, can we build a movement to counter their apocalyptic, fascist ideology? What about a vision of love and compassion for people and the planet? All that, plus a commentary from Laura on Elon Musk's recently privately-incorporated Tesla town in Brownsville, TX. “These people are preparing for the end of the world. They are abandoning this place. They are traitors. And so we respond to them in part by committing to where we are and by being committed to other people. And it sounds very simple, but I think there's something really fundamental and profound about that when you realize the scale to which these folks have decided to embrace this politics of contempt and abandonment.” - Astra Taylor“Under colonialism, the creation of nation states is pretty arbitrary. Guy with book decides to form country. That's what they see in Israel  . . . At the same time as the Iraq Sinjar crisis, Gaza was experiencing the 2014 Gaza War (Operation Protective Edge), a 50-day conflict  between Israel and Hamas that began in July 2014. The war involved intense Israeli airstrikes and a ground invasion in response to Hamas rocket attacks, resulting in over 2,000 Palestinian deaths (mostly civilians) and significant destruction in Gaza. Israeli casualties included 67 soldiers and six civilians.  The US response in Gaza was primarily diplomatic. URGENT REQUEST TO OUR FOLLOWERS: Support independent media in the fight against authoritarianism. I will not compare death to death. I will not compare I will not compare… “Welcome to my morning mantra. It's been a long hot news summer and it's important to remember the rules. Under prevailing US media law, you may not compare a killing to a killing. You may not say the word Palestinian for example and then in the same sentence, say Yazidi. You may not compare. You may not compare… The rules are very clear, especially when it comes to the Middle East.I, for example, may not compare destruction to destruction. It is best, in fact, if I do not even contemplate or wonder about men and women and children trapped without food and medicine and drinking water under siege on a mountain top, and at the same time, contemplate or wonder about men and women and children trapped without food and medicine and drinking water under siege on a place near a beach.A mountain under siege is not to be compared to a beach besieged. That's simple enough. After all, a mountain is very different from a beach.I will not compare. I will not compare… In particular I will not compare a destroyed mosque in Mosul with a destroyed mosque in Khuzaa. And I absolutely will not compare the motivations of the uniformed soldiers whom I hear laugh and cheer on a videotape out of Gaza as they explode that mosque in Khuzaa, with the motivations of any men anywhere committing war crimes.- Even if I can't get that laughter and cheering out of my head.I may not compare, I may not compare. Why? Because comparisons are odious, of course, and politics is complicated. You heard the president, the U.S. "cannot and should not intervene every time there's a crisis in the world.”Some require the U.S. to act to help the people besieged. Some require the US to act to help the people doing the besieging. To compare is to risk blurring the differences and the differences are all important. To recap the rules: it is wrong to compare. You can not say: a life is a life. You can not say words like oil and money and markets. You can not ask what's the difference between a mountain and a beach.I'm Laura Flanders. Synopsis:  Is Authoritarianism Here?: Gessen and Stanley discuss the shift in America's self-understanding, from democratic ideals to a self-identity based on loving the US for its past greatness, and warn that this is not a democratic project, but rather a fascist one, similar to what Putin is doing in Russia. ARE YOU AUDACIOUS? Masha Gessen and Jason Stanley are two leading experts on autocracy, and they're sounding the alarm. They and their families have escaped totalitarian regimes and oppressive governments; today Gessen and Stanley are pulling back the curtain on the attacks against DEI, trans bodies, civil rights, higher education and more. Is authoritarianism here? Masha Gessen is an acclaimed Russian-American journalist, a Polk Award winning opinion writer for the New York Times and the author of "Surviving Autocracy" and “The Future is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia.” Forced to leave Russia twice, in 2024, a Moscow court convicted them, in absentia to eight years in prison for their reporting on the war in Ukraine. Jason Stanley is a best-selling author and professor whose books include “Erasing History” and "How Fascism Works". He recently left his teaching position at Yale University to relocate to Canada with his family; noting that he is a child of Jewish refugees who fled Nazi Germany. In this historic conversation — the first interview between Gessen and Stanley — the two explore how to be bold in our movements and envision a multi-ethnic democracy. Plus, a commentary from Laura.“Trump has proposed a revived empire, a return to an imaginary past. The Democrats have proposed the way things are now, which are deeply unsatisfying and horribly anxiety provoking for a very large number of people. So we need a vision of a future that is more appealing than the imaginary past.” - Masha Gessen“What I see now is this regime shifting the self understanding of America, from having these democratic ideals . . . God knows they've been imperfect, to a self identity as loving the United States because we've had these great men in our past, and we've conquered the West, and we can punch you in the nose. And that's not a democratic project. That's like what Putin is doing in Russia.” - Jason Stanley• Masha Gessen: Opinion Columnist, The New York Times; Author, Surviving Autocracy; Distinguished Professor, Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, CUNY• Jason Stanley: Author, Erasing History & How Fascism Works; Professor, Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto Music Credit: “America” by Sylvan Paul, courtesy of Wolf+Lamb Records.  "Steppin" by Podington Bear. The power of niche A ‘Langpreneur' I know spent $35K on an event ran by a world class entrepreneur that you know from social. Someone I also look up to. And yes, loved the event. They studied his business. Their key insight; his conversion rates were too low. Then he came to our event for creators in the language space. And so he asked us how to increase his conversion rates. And then he told us what his conversion rates were. We were surprised! They were high… for a business in our niche.. We could tell, because we've been working with language businesses for over a decade. Suddenly, the conversation changed. It wasn't about conversion rates anymore. After some digging, we discovered another way for him to grow his business. Something only someone with a deep understanding of our niche would have noticed. Now it's still too early to say wheter these insights will actually grow his business. But the point is clear. There is a lot of power in creating solutions for a very specific customer avatar. Online language entrepreneurs in our case. That's the power of picking a niche. Join our events: www.creatorempires.com

Shoot us a Text.Today, we're talking about how the White House lawn became a Tesla dealership yesterday. Plus, we're covering Ford's investment into EV charging for its drivers and how Southwest is ending its longstanding free bag policy.President Donald Trump, long an opponent of Joe Biden's EV push, threw a political curveball on Tuesday by inspecting—and even considering purchasing—a Tesla at the White House. The moment was seen as an olive branch to Elon Musk, a vocal supporter of Trump's administration and a key player in the EV industry.Despite campaigning against Biden's EV mandates, Trump praised Tesla's technology and price points at the event. His appearance with Musk comes amid protests and boycotts of Tesla by liberal groups unhappy with Musk's alignment with conservative policies.Tesla's stock, which saw its worst day since 2020 on Monday, rebounded slightly after the event. While admiring Tesla's tech, Trump drew the line at a new model lacking a steering wheel, saying, “I'm going to pass on that.”An eagle-eyed photographer at the event noticed that the President's handwritten notes looked a lot like a sales pitch for Tesla, with phrases like “Teslas can be purchased as low as $299/month or $35K.”Ford has officially delivered over 140K NACS adapters to its EV customers. This move grants Ford EV drivers access to Tesla's vast Supercharger network, marking a major step toward simplifying public charging and expanding infrastructure options. The milestone follows Ford's 2023 announcement to integrate Tesla's Supercharger network into its ecosystem.Ford EVs now have access to over 20,000 Tesla Superchargers—up from 15,300 last year and Ford's BlueOval Charge Network has  over 180,000 chargers at over 50,000 locations, making it North America's largest public integrated charging networkIn February, Tesla Superchargers accounted for nearly 20% of Ford EV charging stops.Plus, Ford EV drivers using Apple CarPlay can now plan Tesla Supercharger stops directly in Apple Maps EV Routing, eliminating the need for a separate app.Southwest Airlines is making a major shift, announcing that starting May 28, it will charge for checked bags—ending its long-standing “bags fly free” policy. The change aims to boost profitability but may alienate loyal travelers.Only Rapid Rewards A-list members and business fare passengers will still get free checked bags.CEO Bob Jordan framed the move as part of an effort to attract new customers and improve profitability. Southwest has also announced plans to introduce assigned seating by 2025, revamp its fare structure, and expand its international routes to stay competitive.Southwest previously touted free checked bags as a key reason customers chose the airline.Delta CEO Ed Bastian sees an opening to attract Southwest passengers, saying, "Those customers aHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

He'd worked for months to land them and had delivered what he promised. But both retailers told him the problem he was solving was not important enough. And then, he met Loblaws-- one of Canada's largest retailers. They loved the case studies he had. They tested it out and quickly launched it across 100% of their locations. "I was going to shut down the company." That's how close it came to failing completely. Instead, a year after meeting Loblaws he was doing $1.5M ARR and had raised a $3M seed round. On today's  Daily Puck Drop, Jason  “Puck” Puckett and Jim Moore jump into the disaster that was the Cougars this weekend against Boise State , and reflect on the Mariners' disappointing season and the decision not to hold a formal press conference .Jim wrote a satirical press conference on how the Mariners end of the season presser should have sounded and it's hilarious!  Go check it out at PuckSports.com, on the blog tab. Why do the Mariners find themselves so unaccountable and why do we as fans seem to put up with their behavior.  They had over 35K people a day there this past weekend. Why??. Both Puck and Jim love the Seahawks +3.5 tonight against Detroit and feel that Geno Smith will once again shine in Detroit.  As Puck likes to point out as a smarts, the team that wins the trenches will win the game! Thanks tips.  Jim wonders if he should write a column on Lee Corso and whey he thinks he should be taken off College GameDay.  Puck, the mature one :), tells Jim not to write the column. Finally, they both find it funny that GameDay will be at Cal this Saturday for the Bears home game against Miami! Jim Duquette, MLB Network Radio stops by for his final visit of the season.  They dive right into the Mariners failures this season and dissected what went wrong and how they could possibly fix it. Jim didn't like the decision for Jerry Dipoto not to do an official end of the year press conference and agreed that John Stanton, the owner should have been present to answer specific questions like why he decided to bring Dipoto and general manager Justin Hollander back for another season. Despite Dipoto saying his outfield is set, Puck and Duquette wonder if they will still try and move Randy Arozarena in the offseason.  Duquette is convinced that they will shot Luis Castillo.  The move would free up $72 million and bring some young talent back. Dipoto claims that they will not have any financial restraints, but they owe a lot of money in arbitration to a number of players and that won't leave them a lot once they are finished with those players.  Rundown00:00 Jim and Puck lament to the Cougars loss…Mariners season being over and the Seahawks taking on the Lions tonight in MNF10:54 Cougars still can't tackle 16:41 Mariners show themselves as cowards this past weekend 30:50 Why won't ownership acknowledge the Dipoto extension. What are they afraid of?35:08 M's won't get any FA's…They owe their own players too much money 55:41 Seahawks and Lions MNF…Take the Hawks and points and over! 01:01:00 Jim Duquette, MLB Network Radio joins for the final official time as he and Puck wrap up the 2025 Mariners and MLB season…..Will Luis Castillo be traded?  Holes all over the infield, who can they get to help?   Ownership not accountable.  Dipoto half-assed press conference.  Edgar Martinez future?  Who will play in the World Series and who do we want?
