I invited a very special language learning and language loving friend to co-host this episode with me and chat all about the joys of language learning. This is a very familiar voice in the language learning community, and it's such a pleasure to have Kerstin Cable of Fluent Language and The Fluent Show on Love, Joy, and Languages! We had an absolute blast talking about loving languages and finding joy in learning them. This chat is extra special for me because I don't think this show would exist without Kerstin and her Podcasting 101 course (https://www.kerstincable.com/podcasting101). Big thanks to Kerstin for putting so much goodness out into the world! In today's episode, Kersin and I talk about celebrating our language achievements, the value of self-work and appreciating your own personal journey, language exams and the excitement of the process, lots of German language, the link between language and culture, Kerstin teaches me a bit Welsh (you'll see why this language can easily become an obsession!), and Kerstin shares some of her favorite language things and people. Learning a language is a long road, and there are so many challenges along the way, but something that keeps us in the language learning world is all the joy we find in the process and the community. I hope you enjoy listening in to my chat with Kerstin, and I hope it reminds you of all the exciting things you find in your own language life. Episode 66: Manifesting in Language Learning w/Angel Pretot of French Fluency

Love, Joy, and Languages

Manifesting. Some people love it. Some people believe it's hogwash. Wherever you stand, the truth remains that our actions lead to consequences. When our actions are in line with our goals (something that takes conscious awareness and intention), then the consequences will be in line with our desires. So it makes sense that our actions that are aligned with our language goals will lead to the language results we want. This is exactly what we're talking about today. I am delighted to share this conversation I had with French language coach Angel Pretot of French Fluency. I first learned of Angel's work in an interview he had with Lindsay Williams of Lindsay Does Languages (linked below), and this led me to Angel's work guiding French learners to fluency with manifestation. While there are many, many different explanations and thoughts about what manifesting is and how it works, there are also many misconceptions about it, as well, especially when it comes to language learning. Because, really, I don't hear a lot of people in language learning spaces talking about manifesting and how we can use the power of our brains to bring the language to us and to align ourselves better with our language goals. Despite what some people think, manifesting in language learning is not simply thinking your language into existence. I need to say this because I know it's a very common misconception. And that's why I wanted to bring Angel onto the show to break this all down for us, talk about what manifesting is and how we can harness it to take inspired action in our language lives that leads to the language outcomes we desire. Angel shares some very practical tips for how you can strengthen your language learning by implementing manifesting techniques to unlock the power of your brain to consciously work for you and lead you to your language learning goals faster and more enjoyably. In this episode, I talk about the power of the words we speak to ourselves about ourselves and our languages. Beginning my language learning journey, I held core beliefs about what that journey would look like and about myself as a language learner. Such things as, "I'm too old," "Language learning is difficult and time-consuming," and "I'm not gifted at languages" were at the center of all my beliefs about language learning and what it meant for me. I often found that the words I spoke -- both out loud and in my head -- upheld these beliefs, and confirmation bias had me focusing on things that seemed to affirm them. Learning to pay attention to these words was the first step I took to halting this destructive pattern. I learned how to pay attention to how I feel in a language moment, which is often a signal that negative thoughts are swirling around my head. Next, I gave this callous voice a name, allowing myself to disassociate from the pessimism and self-doubt and look at things from a more realistic and constructive perspective. Finally, finding positive, believable words to replace the negative ones was something I knew I needed to practice in order to move forward with a growth mindset. Hearing languages I can't understand is one of my favourite parts of travelling - it's one of the surest ways to feel I am away from home, exploring a foreign-to-me place. I've also been lucky enough - from an English-speaker perspective, especially - to have studied quite a few different languages over the years. I still wish, of course, I'd been born somewhere in Europe where I would have grown up learning multiple languages more easily from a young age, but I can only dream about that! Food Safety Tips (0:00:00) When it comes to food safety, we all know the basics: wash your hands after handling raw meat, rinse your produce, and try not to eat raw cookie dough (but we won't judge you if you do). But how good are we when it comes to the lesser-known food precautions? How often do we need to be switching out our sponges, and what's harmful about putting hot food in the fridge? Now that we're all cooking more from home, we need to be extra careful about keeping our bodies safe from foodborne illness. Joining us on the show this morning is Natalie Seymour, a Food Safety Extension Associate, here to discuss how to separate delicious food from dangerous germs.  Learning a Language Fast (0:20:45) 917 million people speak Mandarin. 417 million speak Spanish. And both of these languages have more native speakers than English. Learning a new language isn't just a hobby, but it's becoming a necessity in order to communicate with others all around the world. Sure, learning a new language can seem daunting. But, most of us have a little extra time right now, especially now that it's summer. Plus, it's a great way to keep your children's minds engaged while school is out. With us today we have Lindsay Williams from Lindsay Does Languages—a blog to help inspire independent language learners and tutors. Lindsay has studied 13 different languages. She's here to share all of her tips and tricks on quickly learning a new language.   History Lessons from Hamilton (0:33:05) Have you seen “Hamilton” on Disney+ yet?  This Broadway musical tells “the story of America then, told by America now”. It focuses on the life of Alexander Hamilton, one of our nation's founders. With a mix of hip hop, R&B, jazz, and Broadway music, “Hamilton” has received unprecedented acclaim and popularity. However, a rapping Thomas Jefferson and bald George Washington raise a couple of questions...like, how historically accurate is this Broadway phenomenon? To help us know what aspects of “Hamilton” are based on real American history, we've invited Dr. Benjamin Park onto the show. He's a professor of history at Sam Houston State University.   The Race Against Human Trafficking (1:11:08) Renee Brinkerhoff wants to complete 6 racecar rallies on 7 continents all in a vintage Porsche 356 vehicle. While this seems like a worthy pursuit in and of itself, it's not the end of the story. In fact, we were amazed to hear that Renee's goal with these races is to put an end to the terror that is human trafficking. We were inspired by Renee's mission so we've invited her on the show today to tell us more about it. She's the racer and philanthropist from Valkyrie Racing Team and Valkyrie Gives Foundation.   Weekend Review (1:27:36) Lisa and Richie talk about what there is to do this weekend, from the newest shows coming to streaming services to the New York Times bestsellers list.

Lindsay Williams has been hooked on languages ever since childhood when she got a taste of French—and the free croissants that accompanied the class! Since then, she's gone on to learn Spanish, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, German, Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese, Esperanto, Indonesian, Korean, Guarani, and more. Along the way, she developed a passion for teaching languages, too, and has taught learners in Costa Rica, refugees in the U.K., countless learners online, and even employees at a garlic bread factory! She now dedicates time to inspiring independent language learners and online teachers, sharing a wealth of useful tips and tools on her popular site Lindsay Does Language. She has also created one of my favorite new podcasts, Language Stories, a documentary series that highlights various languages around the globe and the people who speak them.

A little preview of what to expect on November 10th 2017 when the first episode of Language Stories launches! What is Language Stories? Language Stories is a new series here at Lindsay Does Languages of video and podcast episodes about languages in various places around the world. We're currently spending a year travelling and working (online) and wanted to produce something lasting and inspiring both for language lovers and curious travellers alike. We're creating Language Stories as we travel, discovering languages + meeting people in the places we go and sharing their stories. Language Stories is designed to be accessible. Something you can share with your family and friends that both do and don't necessarily love languages as much as you do. It's designed to inspire. To keep or start people learning languages solo and maybe even to travel to explore further for yourself. And finally, it's designed to last. We want Language Stories to be something that you can revisit multiple times both now and in the future to enjoy as and when you fancy. What makes Language Stories different is that it's a multi-format project. There's videos and podcast episodes primarily, that draw from the same sources but are produced by different people so tell things from slightly different perspectives. (The videos are edited by Ashley, my husband, and the podcasts are edited by me, Lindsay). From time to time there'll also be additional blog content that accompanies the core videos and podcasts, and maybe even other formats as time goes on. We have some ideas and places in mind for future episodes, largely based on our travel plans for the year. However, we are flexible and if you have a language story to share, or you know someone who does, get in touch and if our plans align with where you are in the world, we'd love to get chatting about featuring your language story.
