Hello dear friends! I'm excited to share my conversation with a beloved coaching colleague, Heather Egginton. Heather joins us to discuss how it feels to be a millionaire! Recently, Heather's net worth topped $1 million. We discuss how that intersects with her feelings of worth inside herself. It's a fascinating conversation and Heather brings curiosity herself, inviting me to share about how I came to be writing a book about how it feels to be a millionaire. So for part of our conversation interviewer becomes interviewee! This conversation will show up in your inbox (if you're subscribed to this publication) or listen in your favorite podcast app! We'll return to the last few editions of season two's newsletter, about staying creative in disruptive times, next week.Happy Tuesday!About This SeriesThis is a podcast series within Art Creativity & Wellbeing and one that I'm excited to share. It's also research for my forthcoming book, How It Feels to be a Millionaire. I've become curious, as I've grown in this way myself, to understand how “worth” and “net worth”intersect for people living in our modern world.Sometimes millionaires do not feel like a million bucks.. Sometimes non-millionaires do. So, what are the commonalities and challenges? What is there to be learned here about myself, my fellow humans and our world? I'm excited to discover - and share - the answers and I know one thing, conversations like today's are an important part of how we get there. Joyfully so!What I'm Up ToInstagram Live Storytime throughout MayMay 1, 2023 was the day I got on an airplane and flew to England to begin my solo cross-country hike of the Coast to Coast path!I'm celebrating that all this month by reading to you from my memoir about this journey, Waking Up!The times are varying, and you can see when I'll be going live next in each Instagram live post in my Instagram feed @weturnedoutokay .Production Note – While there are swears in the book I am keeping these Instagram lives safe for work and sensitive ears – see you there!New Art Available in My Store"I keep your painting on the shelf with my mom['s ashes] so she can see something beautiful every day.”This was said to me a few weeks ago and I am changed. If you are in need of inspiration, or if you'd like to add to your art collection with some of my original works, view my art by clicking here.Pathfinders Podcast HostI'm honored and excited to share that I have accepted the role of Podcast Host at "the premier platform for changemakers and innovators," Pathfinders.social! When you think there's no good in the worldWhen you're stuck in a bad energyOr a bad news cycleBoogie on over to PathfindersWhere you will always be inspiredBy the cool things that your fellow humans are up toBy the many ways that humans are creating a better world for everyone. Here is my Pathfinders interviewIf you're doing something cool in the worldHead to Pathfinders.social and add your voiceThen I can interview you!About this podcast's new homePractical Intuition with Kay has become Art Creativity & Wellbeing.I am doing a happy dance about this!Seriously if emoji were thing I could do in these show notes you would see so many dancing-people, magic-sparkles, and heart emoji right hereLast summer I started a newsletter called Art Creativity & Wellbeing. And then things got complicated as I tried to figure out what the newsletter is, what my podcast should focus on – practical intuition felt embedded, and not the focus anymore. So I've been letting it all kind of rest for winter and early spring.Lo and behold, the next steps just kept showing up and showing up.Now, we've got a great new home in the Substack app! What this means for youIf you're subscribed in your favorite podcatcher, it's still there.. Let's talk about fairness—or, more accurately, let's talk about how your company is probably failing at it! You know the drill: the ‘neutral' policies that somehow always disadvantage the same people, the DEI initiatives that start and end with a Slack emoji, the performance reviews that feel more like a lottery than actual feedback. This week, Zach Nunn (founder of Living Corporate and certified corporate truth-teller) joins me to rip apart the illusion of fairness at work! We're talking remote work double standards, the sneaky policies that keep marginalized employees stuck, and why ‘transparency' is often just corporate code for ‘we'll tell you the rules but not how to win.' If most workplaces were actually fair, we wouldn't need this episode! But since that's not our reality yet… press play and let's get figure it out together. Macy's Inc., inclusive of companies Macy's, Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury, is setting the stage for a remarkable new era of purpose with their new statement, "Mission Every One." This commitment to creating a brighter, more equitable future set the stage for significant changes across the enterprise, including the revitalization of their annual holiday season campaign. With Mission Every One at its core, Macy's took a critical look at existing programs and partnerships to ensure alignment with its new purpose. This led to the conclusion of a beloved long-term cause partnership and a search for a new nonprofit partner. The search culminated in 2022 when Macy's announced Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America, a nonprofit organization dedicated to mentorship and youth development, as its new signature partner. The first year's partnership results were astounding, with Macy's raising $4.78 million for the nonprofit. We invited Bobby Amirshahi, Senior Vice President and Head of Communications, and Sam Di Scipio, Senior Director of Social Impact, to walk us through how they are continuing to put Mission Every One into action to create a brighter future with bold representation for all. This week we're discussing every album by Sunny Day Real Estate. While they were a massive part of establishing emo as a genre in the mid to late 90s, you'd be a fool to dismiss these guys as just another emo band. Sunny Day has more in common with post-hardcore than with what we consider emo. Leave any biases at the door because this band rules.Closing track: “Pillars” from How It Feels to Be Something On (1998)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexHistory Tom's stuff:New album on BandcampDebut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:Sunny Day Real Estate (1995) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteThe Rising Tide (2000) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:How It Feels to Be Something On (1998) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteThe Rising Tide (2000) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Diary (1994)Sunny Day Real Estate (aka LP2; The Pink Album) (1995)How It Feels to Be Something On (1998)The Rising Tide (2000)

Usually the things that are the farthest out — that look the least like art to me — are the things that become the most important. American painter Glenn Ligon is one of the most recognizable figures in the contemporary art scene. His distinctive, political work uses repetition and transformation to abstract the texts of 20th-century writers. In this episode, Ligon talks about childhood and what it means to have a parent who fiercely and playfully supports you. He also discusses the essential lesson that there's value in the things you do differently, and why he won't take an afternoon nap in his own studio. Wear is the Love, Episode #12This week, we're back to chatting about some of our Top 5 articles, specifically George Packer's piece in The Atlantic on the school culture wars and Vinson Cunningham's interview of Dr. Cornel West in the New Yorker. We're still praying for Ukraine and hope you'll tune into episodes 10 and 11 if you're interested. Also, don't miss Michael's posts from this last week, including his thoughts on cooking with love on a tight schedule, and his essay on the appropriate use of political power. Episode notes:Our Shared Past in the Mediterranean Curriculum (the project Melissa worked on a few years ago)The Top 5 articles for your week:“The Grown Ups Are Losing It” (The Atlantic)Because as we discuss on the podcast, George Packer asks “what is school for?” amidst the debates about what we're teaching children in public schools.“Cornel West Sees Spiritual Decay in the Culture” (New Yorker)Because Dr. West is incisive here and throughout this great interview: “The secular has taken tremendous wounds and bruises in the last thirty years, because commodification is almost taking it over—and so, when you think of the secular, you don't think right away of scientific authority, scientific breakthroughs. When you think of the secular these days, you think of careerism, opportunism, hedonism, egoism, individualism—and the ways in which science seems to be driven by corporate greed, seems to be moving toward the explosion of the planet or the collapse of the environment. So that the secular has a very different resonance now than it did in '77. It's almost as if everybody recognizes the spiritual decay and the moral decrepitude of the culture.”“Awaiting a New Prophetic Dispensation” (Hedgehog Review)Because “Perhaps we can tuck our disagreements about fundamental things away into our private lives, and let the public sphere be a place for adjudicating public things.”“The man who paid for America's fear” (San Francisco Chronicle)Because in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, hundreds of Muslims were detained and jailed on charges of terrorism, and this essay shows the lingering impact that experience had on one such man.“Here is How It Feels to Watch Russia Wage War in Ukraine” (NYT)Because young people, i.e. those under 30 who know nothing but a democratic Ukraine, talked to the NYT about their experiences and attitudes towards the war. In this episode, Niki, Neil, and Natalia discuss Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer's decision to retire. Support Past Present on Patreon: http://www.pastpresentpodcast.com/episodes Here are some links and references mentioned during this week's show: Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer has announced he will retire at the end of his term, a move many say is reflective of his pragmatism. Natalia referred to this New York Times piece about Breyer's effort to eschew ideology and to this Teen Vogue article about the need for him to retire during a Democratic presidency. Niki drew on this Atlantic essay on the illusion of impartiality. In our regular closing feature, What's Making History: Natalia shared Michael Powell's New York Times article, “How It Feels to Be an Asian Student in An Elite Public School.” Neil commented on Emily Baker-White's Buzzfeed article, “Nothing Sacred: These Apps Reserve the Right to Sell Your Prayers.” Niki discussed right-wing radio host Dan Bongino's relish for deplatforming.
Hearing languages I can't understand is one of my favourite parts of travelling - it's one of the surest ways to feel I am away from home, exploring a foreign-to-me place. I've also been lucky enough - from an English-speaker perspective, especially - to have studied quite a few different languages over the years. I still wish, of course, I'd been born somewhere in Europe where I would have grown up learning multiple languages more easily from a young age, but I can only dream about that! In Episode 261 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast I chat with three guests about their various experiences with languages and accents. First, I speak with Helena Fox about the languages of her childhood and how they contributed to her accent. I then chat to Carolanna Lisonbee who chose to study Mandarin and Japanese for a really fabulous reason. Lastly, I turn to Lindsay Williams for some tips on languages for travellers - she has much to say about being practical with your approach to language learning before and during a trip and her tips are really valuable. Studying in other countries isn't just about getting a qualification: oh no, it's SO much more! In Episode 248 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast I chat with three women who've spent some time studying abroad, both undergraduate and postgraduate, and without fail they mention how significant and life changing this experience was. First, I chat with Kaitlyn Jain. She hadn't never been outside of North America before she spent a semester at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, and this experience was particularly life-changing for Kaitlyn because she really threw herself into Australian life. My next guest is Helena Fox who dutifully completed a law degree in her home country before finally "running away" - her words! - to the United States to study writing; let's just say, she's now a writer and not a lawyer! Finally, I speak with Annie Daly who majored in American Studies at college, and had a wonderful full year studying abroad in England as part of this. My definition of thoughtful travel has come a long way since I named this podcast over five years ago; I've also been excited to see a lot more people giving thought to the question of what thoughtful travel means. Episode 245 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast gathers the ideas of many more people to help us consider this important question. I chat with four guests about what they think thoughtful travel means, starting with Henry Gold. He emphasises respecting others, especially because you are visiting their home or country. Next, we hear from James Mwenda who focuses on the impact our travels have. Helena Fox talks about being present in the place you go to, and also discusses ideas of respect and slow travel. My final guest, Vince Dickson, talks about being more open to different experiences, as well as considering the impact our travels have. POLITICAL ANALYST AVAILABLE: Drew Allen is a Texas-bred, California-based conservative author and speaker, who writes a weekly blog promoting conservative ideals at drewthomasallen.com. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) on Wednesday released a recruitment video encouraging Americans to “command your space” and “be unapologetically you.” The video features an unnamed CIA official and her story as the daughter of immigrants. “When I was 17 I quoted Zora Neale Hurston's ‘How It Feels to Be Colored Me' in my college application essay. The line that spoke to me stated simply, ‘I am not tragically colored. There is no sorrow dammed up in my soul, nor lurking behind my eyes. In this Roundtable we are joined by Award-winning documentary filmmaker Yoruba Richen to discuss her powerful film “How It Feels to be Free,” which is streaming on PBS through February 16th. This documentary follows the inspiring stories of six iconic Black female entertainers – Lena Horne, Abbey Lincoln, Nina Simone, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson and Pam Grier – and the ways their actions defied the standards of the entertainment in a time when they were expected to conform into roles that perpetuated racist stereotypes. Their influence is felt to this day and is touched upon in interviews with Halle Berry, Lena Waithe, Samuel L Jackson, and other trailblazers. The film explores how each of them used their art and influence to further advance the civil rights movement. Producer Mishka Brown leads this engaging conversation, covering Yoruba’s early days where fellowships helped her travel around the world creating documentaries, mentorship, and Black representation in Hollywood, and the making of Yoruba’s other film, “The Killing of Breonna Taylor,” which is currently streaming on Hulu.
“How It Feels to Be Free” profiles six Black women entertainers who broke barriers of racial discrimination. Filmmaker Yoruba Richen traces the histories of Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson, Abbey Lincoln, Nina Simone, and Pam Grier. Official trailer:
A year ago, Kiki Aranita was in Hong Kong for a cousin's wedding when she heard the first rumblings about a virus that was highly contagious and beginning to spread. There's no way she could have known that just months later, she'd have to shut down her much-loved Philadelphia restaurant Poi Dog because of its impact. It was an agonizing decision, but the multi-talented chef, writer, and artist is finding purpose in the pivot with a line of condiments that are based in her Hawaii heritage, making objects that soothe her soul, and finding new ways to keep the Poi Dog dream alive and thriving. She joined Communal Table for an in-depth conversation about the practical, financial, emotional, and intellectual work it takes to be a chef in an age of unrest. The New York Times Presents episode on “The Killing of Breonna Taylor” made its debut in September, the same week as The Sit-In: Harry Belafonte Hosts the Tonight Show. Yoruba Richen directed both documentaries and discusses them with Pure Nonfiction host Thom Powers. Starting in June, Yoruba investigated the Louisville police shooting of Taylor in collaboration with reporter Rukmini Callimachi. Her project on Belafonte looks back to 1968 when he took the place of Johnny Carson for one week as host of the Tonight Show. The film was inspired by an article in The Nation by Joan Walsh. In talking about documentaries that rely on archives, Yoruba quotes filmmaker Shola Lynch: “commercial archives need to understand they can’t hold our history hostage.” Yoruba’s upcoming project is How It Feels to Be Free for PBS American Masters. Once, there was a family who had quite a bit of money. They were always warm and well fed, and often bought toys for their children and gifts for each other. But, when the rabbi would come by and ask if they could give to support those in the community who were not always warm and could not always afford food, they would say no. Why not, and what would it take for them to start giving? Rabbi Leora Kaye, Director of Program at the Union for Reform Judaism, retells the story. You can read a written version of this story, titled “How It Feels to Be Poor,” in The Essential Jewish Stories, collected, annotated, and retold by Seymour Rossel.
