The great Lola started her career behind the camera covering a popular reality TV series. Now she's a master storyteller – someone who can leave a room absolutely stunned in silence just from the words that come out of her mouth. She's a powerful speaker, a talented writer, a social entrepreneur, a painter – and so much more. She also has a lot to say about how we're representing women in the world, how we should make travel better for all of us, and how the stories we tell ourselves and the grace we give ourselves plays an enormous role in making that all work. How Travel Photography Can Connect You to Humans Outside (Lola Akinmade Åkerström, travel photographer) We spend a lot of time talking about the act, art and benefits of connecting with nature. But what about connecting with the humans who live on the land? What about seeing and being seen no matter where you are or what kind of nature you call home? Travel photographer Lola Akinmade Åkerström has made a career of creating connections with the landscape, land and culture through portraiture of humans around the world. Born in Nigeria and now living in Sweden, Lola has a deep understanding of connecting with other humans because of the way she shares their experiences. In this episode Lola talks about what she has personally learned through travel photography, what it's like to make excellent portraits around the world and how you can find those same connections, too. I had the pleasure of talking to Lola about her life and career up to the present day. Lola is internationally recognised for her work and has won numerous awards. Some of her work has been featured in the likes of CNN Travel, National Geographic Traveller, and BBC Travel. We spoke about how it all started for her in the industry. Lola told me that she moved to Maryland, USA, and started her education there and then eventually moved across to Europe and settling up in Sweden. She started her career as a field journalist at Eco-Challenge and then years later, she decided to pursue her love for photography and go full time as an entrepreneur. Lola and I spoke about her work, including some projects that she has ongoing. We also spoke about the one work that got her noticed, which was a photograph of a husky she took for the National Geographic Traveller. As an established author, we spoke about some of her published books. She recommended one to pick up if you haven't read any of her books before. She spoke to me about how she went about launching a new academy recently. She hopes the academy will inspire a new generation. We also spoke about her family life being married with 2 kids. She told me how she balances her work being a mother. There are some other new projects on the cards and she will continue to work on her photography. It was a real pleasure talking to Lola. Her passion and commitment are inspiring. I learnt a lot just talking to her and have instilled some of her sage advice she gave me into my work. I look forward to seeing where Lola goes next in her entrepreneurial life. You can also watch the episode on my YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/u6X_g6r44pk). “If you go into something just for the money, then when times get really tough, emotionally, it’s going to drain you. But if you go into something because you are passionate about it, you’re going to be a lot more resilient. So that when it does dip, you’re still going to have that passion, because this is what you want to do, it’s just life is taking you a different route right now.” A message for our times! In this episode of Hormonally Speaking, I talk with my old friend Lola Akinmade, who has become a famous travel writer and photographer during the decade I’ve known her. I was so interested to hear her story and thoughts, because she juggles a successful career with being a mom, as well as being a Nigerian-born woman in a field full of white, mostly American men. She’s always inspired me, and I know she will inspire you too. Listening to Lola, we begin to see it is our self-limitations that hinder us the most, because she’s got gender, race, and motherhood working “against” her, yet she’s still been able to go further than I think even *she* dreamed. Particularly during this time in history, when many of us are reassessing what is important in life, and what we really want our future to look like, Lola’s points about passion and determination are truer than ever. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! Award-winning writer and photographer Lola (Akinmade) Åkerström has photographed and dispatched from 70+ countries for various publications. Matt has an award winning blog http://www.nomadicmatt.com/ (www.nomadicmatt.com) which hosts countless travel resources, plus guidebooks and e-courses. He has been featured on CNN, National Geographic, The BBC and many more.  Matt just released his new travel memoir  https://www.amazon.com/Ten-Years-Nomad-Travelers-Journey/dp/1250190517 (Ten Years a Nomad – A Traveler's Journey Home) and we asked him on the show to talk about it. Matt's new book is deeply personal which differs from his normal writing style on “the how and the what of travel.” He shares his editor's request to go “deeper.”  He tells us what it was like to head out on his own when people in his life were not as supportive, how he overcame it and whether those people are on board now. He discusses how he overcame his fears of traveling solo and how we were are all just wanting human connection. We learn how friendships are different on the road than at home and that leads towards faster friendships and makes dating look very different. We circle back to his home in Austin and ask if has the semblance of routine he was longing for. At the end of his book, he wrote “19 lessons from 10 years of travel” and number 13 stuck a chord – “It is never too late to change.”  Matt elaborates on that point and how travel gives you the space to be whoever you want to be and if your joke bombs you can just start anew at a different hostel or location. Matt has many endeavors and he shared the genesis and vision of https://travelcon.org (TravelCon) a new travel industry conference that focuses on professional development and how to sustain and grow your travel business. He also touched on the mission behind his non-profit https://takeflyte.org/ (Flyte) which helps under-served teens get to experience “the gift of travel.” We learn who is inspiring him right now and some inspirational book recommendations such as https://www.amazon.com/Vagabonding-Rolf-Potts/dp/8415355262/ref=sr_1_4?hvadid=78202817349202&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvqmt=e&keywords=vagabonding&qid=1567383932&s=gateway&sr=8-4 (Vagabonding) by Rolf Potts, https://www.amazon.com/Wild-Found-Pacific-Crest-Trail/dp/0307476073/ref=sr_1_2?hvadid=78065376905134&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvqmt=e&keywords=wild+by+cheryl+strayed&qid=1567384005&s=gateway&sr=8-2 (Wild) by Cheryl Strayed, https://www.amazon.com/Bill-Bryson-Sunburned-Reprinted-12-2-2000/dp/B00HTJNM82/ref=sr_1_2?hvadid=77927940091926&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvqmt=e&keywords=in+a+sunburned+country&qid=1567384057&s=gateway&sr=8-2 (In a Sunburned Country) by Bill Bryson and https://www.amazon.com/Innocents-Abroad-Wordsworth-Classics/dp/1840226366/ref=sr_1_2?hvadid=3527180630&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvqmt=e&keywords=innocence+abroad&qid=1567384139&s=gateway&sr=8-2 (The Innocents Abroad) by Mark Twain. In Episode 31 Amanda is talking about the different ways, both good and bad, that the internet has changed travel - how we plan and book it, how we act when we’re travelling, even how much money we spend on it! Jeff Ryan has a great perspective on this topic having spent 28 years gradually hiking the Appalachian Trail in the US. Over those three decades, he has seen the internet change many aspects of how he travels, and he has fully embraced them. Lola Akinmade-Åkerström has, as always, something particularly thoughtful to say about how the internet has changed travel - and Amanda agrees that we need to use its power pretty mindfully to make the most of it. Finally, Mark Wyld rejoices about how the internet has changed the way we book and plan travel - and how it can save us money, too. So just how slow is slow travel? We can probably all have some kind of similar idea on what slow travel is - being more mindful with how we spend our time travelling, not rushing around to tick off lists of all the sights, and possibly spending longer than usual in one spot - but how slow is slow? Amanda's guests in this episode all have a different take on how we can travel slowly, and her first one is a real champion at it: Jeff Ryan has taken 28 years to hike the Appalachian Trail! Not all at once, of course, but he has learnt some great lessons from these experiences about travelling slowly. Following this she chats with Jeremy and Katie Kloberdanz who are currently travelling full time and have used this experience to figure out the kind of slow travel that works for them.  Finally, Amanda talks with Lola Akinmade-Åkerström who has quite a different way of approaching slow travel, and one that has a lot of merit, as you can use her strategy even if you don’t have a whole of time to travel. Links:  Jeff Ryan’s author website -  http://www.jeffryanauthor.com/ Jeff’s book, Appalachian Odyssey -  http://amzn.to/2bB9o8u Jeremy and Katie Kloberdanz of The Life Bohemian website - http://www.thelifebohemian.com/ The Life Bohemian Podcast - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-life-bohemian/id1079385152?mt=2 Lola’s site Geotraveler’s Niche - http://www.lolaakinmade.com/ Slow Travel Stockholm - http://www.slowtravelstockholm.com Episode 13 - Taking it Slow: Travelling to Feel Like a Local http://notaballerina.com/13 jackrabbit.fm listener survey - thanks in advance for taking it! - http://www.jackrabbit.fm/survey Tweet me @amandakendle Hashtag #thoughtfultravelpod Chat on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/NotABallerina Show notes at https://notaballerina.com/25
