A record 45 million Americans were expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend, long considered the unofficial kickoff to summer. And most of them were hitting the road. Sarah Kendzior is no stranger to the family road trip. Her family, in fact, has visited 38 states—and counting. These trips were born out of a love and curiosity for America and a desire to explore small towns, vast National Parks, and the unexpected oddities along the way. And when money was tight, the best way for her family to see the country was simply to jump in the car and go.In her new book, The Last American Road Trip: A Memoir, Sarah chronicles those family trips while grappling with a country she believes is failing to uphold its own ideals. Sarah says she feels an urgency to share the country she loves with her children but often wonders if these travels—and the version of America she knows—might be coming to an end.“Every trip I describe in that book,” Sarah says, “I set off wondering: Is this the last time the four of us will get to be together exploring America with the freedom that we have now?”On this week's More To The Story, Sarah chats with host Al Letson about trying to show her children the America she adores while holding a light to its flaws, her concerns for the nation's future, and why hitting the road is often the best way to understand yourself—and your country.Producers: Josh Sanburn and Artis Curiskis | Editor: Kara McGuirk-Allison | Theme music: Fernando Arruda and Jim Briggs | Digital producer: Daniel King | Interim executive producers: Brett Myers and Taki Telonidis | Executive editor: James West | Host: Al Letson Donate today at Revealnews.org/more Subscribe to our weekly newsletter at Revealnews.org/weekly Follow us on Instagram and Bluesky Listen: Black in the Sunshine State (Reveal)Read: Republicans Aim to Generate Support for Selling Off America's Public Lands (Mother Jones)Read: How to Travel Abroad as the World's Most Toxic Brand: American (Mother Jones)Read: The Last American Road Trip: A Memoir, by Sarah KendziorNote: If you buy a book using our Bookshop link, a small share of the proceeds supports our journalism. My wife and I stood at the edge of the world—or at least what felt like it—squinting through the murk and sea spray to snap photos of a decommissioned lighthouse. Less like some beacon of hope, its white tower loomed like a ghost, haunting the craggy cliffs of coastal Victoria and my vacation prospects. We'd arrived at the sleepy Victorian coastal town of Port Fairy expecting sunshine, a pleasant breeze—and if not asking too much—maybe a kangaroo or two bounding in silhouette against the sunset. Instead, a spectrum of misery lay before us: wind that could strip the paint from a car and rain in erratic, bipolar bursts. Australians, it seems, are utterly smitten with coffee. The beverage of choice appears to be the flat white, a silky yet buttoned-down cousin to the latte or cappuccino. We landed in Sydney at dawn, dragging two hefty bags from baggage claim. Our first order of business was to snag a flat white before leaving the terminal. Ever the minimalist, I settled for an espresso, watching the crowd in a bleary-eyed daze, squinting at the sun as if it were a new concept. My wife, meanwhile, sat busy photographing her artfully swirled toothpick masterpiece. Soon enough, we embraced the day and ventured out into the land of sculpted asses in Bondi Beach. In this episode of the Money Talks News podcast, we're talking about how organizing your money can make you richer and how to get there with the least possible pain. This will probably come as no surprise, but according to a recent survey, only 23% of Americans have a formal financial plan. And you can probably guess why: 76% of those without a plan say they feel overwhelmed by the thought of creating one, and 56% say life is too uncertain for a plan to have any value. That's a bummer because having a plan for your money can lead directly to having more money. And as we like to say around here, more money is better. That's why this week's guest is going to help us get our money ducks in a row. Host Stacy Johnson is joined by financial journalist Miranda Marquit. Listening in and sometimes contributing is producer Aaron Freeman. Our special guest today is Alissa Maizes, the founder of Amplify My Wealth, a registered investment adviser. Fundraising for your student trips abroad does not need to be scary. In fact, it can become a fun way to bring your community together. In today's episode, I interview fundraising guru, Sara Johnson, where she shares all of her tricks of the trade on how to create and run a fundraising event that will earn your group an easy $3,000-$5,000 in one-easy-step.Sara Johnson has been leading trips with her students for over a decade. What amazes me about her, she is able to run multiple fundraising events each year at her school to help fund her students' trips abroad. With the goal of “low-risk and high-demand”, Sara is able to masterfully craft fundraising events that bring about minimal stress with maximum rewards. On average, her strategically run fundraisers bring about $3k-$5k per event.By listening to today's episode you will become inspired to learn how to help your students finance their trips, so you can be the teacher who shows your students the world. By popular demand, I've decided to extend a travel series centered around the topic of building community or maintaining our need for social interactions when away from home. Community building is especially complicated when abroad, where cultures and languages vary considerably from our own. My guests today, veteran travelers with considerable expat experiences, are perfectly suited to discuss this topic. Meghan Walker, a previous guest who writes at awaytofi.com, spent many of her formative years living abroad in Kenya and New Zealand. Her husband, Callan Cooper, is an expat living in the United States from New Zealand, where they met. Meghan and Callan joined me in my home in Colorado for a rare in-person interview, where we discussed in detail the beauty and challenges of international extended travel, careers, evolving travel philosophies, and financial tactics that can have you living a similar life much sooner than you think. In October I published a mini episode on my thought processes on the pros and cons of extended travel abroad. Many of you left comments or emailed me your thoughts, and I'm so thankful for your input. You've all given me plenty to consider. One of the most insightful emails came from Jeff of awaytofi.com, a previous guest on this podcast (Episode 44). Jeff has been living abroad for over fifteen months with his wife, Rose, and as such is well-versed in discussing the impacts of extended travel, particularly on our social lives. This week's episode is an in-depth exploration of extended travel, especially as it relates to our human need for a sense of place and community. Travel takes us away from our tribe, so how do we create new ones? Do we even need to? You can probably expect more content like this with upcoming guests and articles. Today we're talking about the weapon we seem to talk about after every mass shooting in the United States: the AR-15. The AR-15 is the most popular rifle on the consumer market. An estimated 1 in 20 American adults owns at least one. But, it wasn't always this way. In fact, the AR-15's rise in popularity is pretty recent, and when the gun first became available to consumers, it was something of a black sheep. On the show today, Washington Post reporter Todd Frankel walks us through how the AR-15 went from military weapon to consumer product, the marketing that boosted its appeal and what the AR-15 signifies to a country plagued by gun violence. In the News Fix: Finland is the newest member of NATO. We'll get into what that means for Russia's war in Ukraine. And, some news you can use: There are significant delays for passport processing at the State Department. If you're planning an international trip, renew your passport ASAP! Later, one listener shares a piece of trivia about cherry blossom trees in Tokyo. Plus, another listener sent us a stunning photo of cherry blossoms in Seattle. And, this week’s answer to the Make Me Smart question comes from NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman, commander of the Artemis II mission to the moon. Here’s everything we talked about today: “How the AR-15 became a powerful political, cultural symbol in America” from The Washington Post “Analysis | Decades of marketing reinvented the AR-15 into a top-selling firearm” from The Washington Post “Nashville attack renews calls for assault weapons ban – data shows there were fewer mass shooting deaths during an earlier 10-year prohibition” from The Conversation “The Rifle That Ruined America” from The Atlantic “Hoping to Travel Abroad? Don't Put Off Your Passport Application.” from The New York Times “Passport Processing Times Just Increased Due to Summer Travel Demand” from Thrillist “Finland joins NATO in major blow to Russia over Ukraine war” from AP News “Why did Sanna Marin lose Finland's election?” from The Guardian What have you been wrong about lately? We want to hear it. Leave us a voice message at 508-U-B-SMART, and your submission may be featured in a future episode.

Our guest this week is Madelyne Paulk, the Marketing and Communications Manager at Jet It. I recently met Madelyne at an aviation conference, and I was drawn to how genuine, professional, and personable she is. Moments after speaking with her, I immediately knew she would be a great guest to feature on this podcast, and her perspective on diversity and inclusion would be valuable to the audience. Madelyne had some reservations initially because she was new to aviation, which was precisely why her story was important to share with you.Madelyne started her career in aviation with Jet It in 2020 after completing her master's degree program. With little knowledge of the industry, she took a chance and started as a Marketing Intern. Since then, Madelyne has worked her way up to Marketing Manager, where she is able to lead and guide marketing efforts to build brand awareness. Passionate about service and DE&I, Madelyne volunteers with the RedTail Flight Academy helping them plan their inaugural graduation ceremony and consulting on their marketing efforts. Outside of aviation, she also sits on the Lowcountry Advisory Board for Multiplying Good, a national nonprofit focused on elevating public service and empowering the next generation of servant leaders.
According to at least one survey, as many as 80% of Americans prepare a budget. Even if you don't believe that statistic, it's probably safe to say that 80% of Americans have at least thought about having a budget. So, why don't they actually do it? You probably already know the answer: Because budgets are hard to stick to. And why is so hard to stick to a spending plan? Because they feel so restrictive! Who wants to go on a dollar diet? Nobody. How do we fix this? How do we convert from budget hater to budget lover? Let's find out. In this week's podcast, host Stacy Johnson is joined by financial journalist Miranda Marquit. Listening in and sometimes contributing is producer Aaron Freeman. This week, money and happiness guru Jason Vitug returns to talk about how you can learn to love budgeting. Jason has a new book out, Happy Money Happy Life, and he's ready to share some insight. Remember, anything you hear on this podcast doesn't constitute financial advice. In this monthly series I'm sharing what real progress (including real, imperfect, messiness!) looks like for me. May was a whirlwind, and I'm feeling extra grateful for the "highs" and less focused on any so-called "lows." Our attempt at a camping trip is particularly amusing, and a true glimpse at doing something instead of only all-or-nothing. Tune in to hear what I have planned for this month, including the things I want to cross off my Do Something List and the important habit I have been able to establish to help my daughter. I am also throwing out a pretty big dream right now to travel abroad as a family. I hope these episodes encourage you to pursue your life more messily, and to find purpose and fulfillment in the realness. Full Show Notes + Transcript NEW!!
