Gina Anderson talks about her career journey; sitting on boards; mentorship; the power of reinvention; and why she's a self-confessed parcel fanatic.   IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:   [05.54] An introduction to Gina and her role at Reveel. [06.42] Gina's career journey, and how she found supply chain. “Someone early on took a chance on me… Ron wanted to bring me into his freight forwarding business to do sales. So I said: “Well, what does that look like – and what does it pay?!” [08.24] Why Gina has entered her 7.0 era, and the power of reinvention. “If you stay stagnant, it's going to be really hard to feel fulfilled.” [09.53] Why Gina took the leap from corporate America to entrepreneurship to found the Savii Group in 2010. “It was powered by purpose. I wanted to help companies drive efficiencies within their supply chain, but then also take part of the money I was helping them save and reinvest that into their people and social good… I couldn't do the corporate grind at that time in my life. Having kids and being able to create something that was purposeful and impactful was a gamechanger for me.” [12.04] What Gina learned from entrepreneurship, and how to identify opportunities to pivot. “If you pay attention, you'll know when it's time to pivot, when it's time to take a passion and reinvent. Having an entrepreneurial spirit isn't easy, it's not something that everyone has. But recognize it if you do have it. Because it could be something spectacular.” [13.47] Gina's advice for successful networking. “There's no secret sauce – it's just being curious!” [16.02] From AI to a lack of transparency, the tech trends that supply chain teams need to pay attention to. [18.55] Gina's perspective on the industry and where businesses are at with big trends like data, technology, and business intelligence. “It's exciting – people are starting to get out of a fear-based mindset, and they're willing to actually see and experience what's out there.” [21.09] Why Gina is a self-proclaimed parcel fanatic. [22.18] Gina's experience of sitting on boards, and her advice for others looking to get a seat at the table. [26.17] Gina's experience of mentorship, and her perspective on its importance. “I've never had a mentor – but I love mentoring!” [28.59] Gina's advice for young professionals looking to build a career like hers. [30.16] The future for Gina.   RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED:   If you enjoyed this episode and want to hear more from other long-standing women in supply chain, check out 342: Women in supply chain™, Juliette Samson or 191: Women in supply chain™, Lora Cecere.

Julie Tilenius discusses her career journey; the importance of building skills by trying new things; how the industry has changed; & her biggest achievements.   IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:   [08.57] Julie's early years; how her father's career ignited a passion for finance; and the job that laid the foundations for her future career path. “I was so fortunate that my first job out of college was for KPMG… working there exposed me to so many industries and different business models.... That was really the stepping stone for my career.” [11.30] How a personal tragedy drove a career change for Julie, and led her to supply chain. “Here I am, a 25-year-old female, going to work for an industrial tool distributor!... But, little did I know, that was going to be the beginning of something amazing for my career.” [13.46] The many and varied roles that Julie experienced during her time at MSC and the importance of trying new things; how she was able to move through disciplines within the business; and her advice for professionals looking to take this approach. “Take the chance, be open to change. Yes, it's scary! But it's OK to feel comfortably uncomfortable.” [17.15] An introduction to TrueSource, and Julie's role as President. “In this business, service is key. So, when I first took on the role as President, that was my main focus. How are we going to deliver top-notch service to our customers?” [20.31] A closer look at Julie's key areas of focus within TrueSource; her ambition to deliver best-in-class service; and the importance of building strong partnerships. [23.30] From increasing costs and decreasing footfall to rising theft, a closer look at the current market and the challenges faced by Julie and TrueSource customers. [26.22] What Julie loves so much about supply chain; the motivations that drive her; and the importance of celebrating success. “Always having a purpose is really what motivates me every day.” [29.36] Julie's experiences as a woman in the industry, and utilizing curiosity, dedication and a commitment to learning to build trust over time. “Early on, it was a challenge working in a male-dominated industry. There would be so many times I was the only woman in the room. I put up a barrier, I wasn't confident. But I pushed myself through that barrier to speak up. And, at first, my voice fell on deaf ears.” [32.12] The gap between different generations of supply chain professionals, and the importance of building relationships. [34.30] How Julie's daughter is following in her finance footsteps; how the industry that she's stepping into is a very different one; and Julie's advice to her daughter for navigating the journey that's ahead. “Build strong relationships, because you have to rely on others – success doesn't come on your own.” [38.52] Julie's biggest achievements over the course of her career so far. [40.14] The future for Julie, and for TrueSource.   RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED:   You can connect with Julie over on LinkedIn. Networks are all about meaningful connections. When we think about the future of digital supply chains and ‘the network of networks “ powering the world, it’s just as much about connecting people with accurate information, partners, and ideas, as much as it is about connecting people with opportunities across plan, source, make, deliver, and reimagining conventional business models. In the future of work, we will exist in ONE multi-enterprise business network (MEBN), a super-highway connecting your business, products, services, and impacts to global trading partners.  In Episode 38, Christine Barnhart from Infor Supply Chain Strategy and Lora Cecere’s ‘Network of Network’ consortium joins friend Sheri Hinish to explores the supply chain of the future. Concepts like solutions vs. software, single information models, interoperability, real-time vs. near time interactions, functional specialization across nodes, partner selection in digital transformation, and key-takeaways around why change management is critical in supply chain technology implementation. In the 2nd half of this episode, we explore why diversity & inclusion is important in technology. Who wants an echo chamber of ideas? Christine explores her journey as a supply chain Rebel, transitioning as a supply chain leader/practitioner to technology. We also explore the ‘Network of Networks’ thought leadership pioneered by Lora Cecere, where Sheri and Christine met many years ago. The power of relationships is evangelized in this episode. Christine's lessons learned as a Rebel: 1. be tenacious 2. be patient but not complacent 3. be willing to continuously learn and push those around you 4. develop you tribe 5. your best ideas are not always part of a formal process Please show your support by subscribing, giving a 5-star like, and sharing with your network! Lora Cecere has spent her entire career working in the supply chain arena as both practitioner and analyst. Most recently, she delivered a message to practitioners that says we're looking at supply chains from the wrong end of the proverbial telescope. Instead of looking inside out we should be looking outside in, focusing on value-based outcomes driven by market signals and not, as is currently the case, based on the primacy of orders as the lead indicator for what should be planned for in the supply chain. It's a wakeup call for a world where healthcare is moving to wellness and where some forecasts say that the world will not be able to feed itself by 2050.  In this discussion, Lora recaps the main points of her current thinking and offers a framework for the future that includes the use of advanced technologies including machine learning for essential tasks like data cleansing.  She also has a warning for the usual suspects - the startup world is coming to get you.

There's a new tool for ranking the world's best supply chains. The Supply Chain Index was developed by Lora Cecere, founder of Supply Chain Insights, in partnership with Arizona State University. The idea, she says, was to come up with a way to benchmark global supply chains based on hard financial data. Thousands of publicly traded companies are rated on the basis of economic strength, balanced portfolio, resiliency and peer ranking. The result is a tool that can be accessed by all companies, regardless of size.
