Given the supply chain disruption because of the pandemic, she finds it unsurprising that the top three issues related to managing these disruptions. The number one key issue was reducing supply risk, the second was enhancing product availability and finally improving supply chain agility and resilience. Fourth, Josh shares, was sound the area of digital transformation, in which companies hope to achieve better visibility across the supply chain. Fifth is around cost efficiency and companies are keeping their eyes on the bottom line. Improving sales and operations planning and integrated business planning was actually number one on the survey last year. It dropped down a bit on the list, likely because many companies have acted on this goal. The talent gap was also evident this year, across all functional areas. As Hackett consistently conducts this survey every year, there is an interesting dynamic in observing what happens year to year. They saw the pandemic start to transform the priorities of executives. Companies are needing to mitigate risk and become more agile, all while keeping their eyes on the bottom line. They are no longer pursuing cost efficiency, though Josh predicts it may be an issue in the future. There are many different strategies companies are using to identify, mitigate and solve supply chain risk. First are supplier related strategies, including expanding supply base, multisourcing, leveling different geographies and having a backup plan in place. They are also doing regular evaluation of supplier risk. The third is around structural and operational changes, as companies look towards their entire network itself. Josh then elaborates on the digital transformation goals represented in the study. There are a whole lot of small-scale deployments occurring as companies roll out new technologies on a small scale or pilot phase. The top three focus are data visualization, supply chain analytics and robotic process automation. People are using other technologies within the supply chain, such as AI and blockchain, but Hackett is focused on small scale deployments at this time. The study also considers the types of apps companies are investing in, in which sales and operation planning really rises to the top. Even the most dominant companies in the world need to take a look in the mirror now and then. Intel Corp. is no exception. Back in 2007, the company felt that it was slipping in some key areas, including reliability, customer responsiveness and supply-chain costs as a percentage of revenues. It was time for a serious reassessment. So Intel proceeded to implement a number of key performance metrics, and benchmark itself against the competition. ''We had to get our house in order internally,'' says Sharon J. Hall, our guest on this episode. She is director of equipment planning and procurement, as well as of Intel Resale Corp. Hall discusses how Intel went about evaluating itself, and implementing improvements to the organization where necessary. It adopted five key tenets to which its metrics would be aligned. The result: Intel today has once again been designated a ''Supply Chain to Admire'' by Supply Chain Insights. The effort, says Hall, stemmed from a realization that supply chain can help the company not just to control costs, but to deliver growth.

Can playing a game help supply-chain managers cope with the uncertainties of the real world? Experts would say yes. As far back as the early 1960s, professors at MIT's Sloan School of Management developed the Beer Game, which despite its frat-friendly name was a sober attempt to demonstrate the principles of supply-chain management. Since then, academics and practitioners have developed a number of so-called ''serious'' games and simulations to address the complexities involved in achieving the proper balance between supply and demand. The latest version is SCI Impact, developed by Sterling Simulation in partnership with Supply Chain Insights. It extends the concept of the Beer Game to encapsulate the realities of entire supply chains. Pairs of teams compete to see who can dictate the most effective inventory and ordering policies in response to shifts in demand. On this episode, we get an introduction to SCI Impact from Paul Rohrbaugh, president of Sterling Simulation. He talks about the history of gamification in supply-chain management, what his new game hopes to accomplish, and how it might evolve in future.

There's a new tool for ranking the world's best supply chains. The Supply Chain Index was developed by Lora Cecere, founder of Supply Chain Insights, in partnership with Arizona State University. The idea, she says, was to come up with a way to benchmark global supply chains based on hard financial data. Thousands of publicly traded companies are rated on the basis of economic strength, balanced portfolio, resiliency and peer ranking. The result is a tool that can be accessed by all companies, regardless of size. The three-year effort culminates with release of the very first Supply Chain Index, at Supply Chain Insight's Global Summit in Scottsdale, AZ on September 10-11, 2014. Lora joins us on this episode to explain how the index was developed, and how companies can use it to improve their supply chains in the years ahead.

Humankind is forever striving for perfection. When it comes to the job of demand forecasting, however, perhaps we ought to be a tad less obsessive. Nobody's arguing that the forecast is irrelevant. Suppliers and retailers need some way to get a handle on what the customer's going to buy. But the all-consuming quest for the perfect number is bound to fail. Reality has an annoying way of refusing to cooperate with expectations. Lora Cecere, founder of Supply Chain Insights, joins us on this episode to prescribe a way out of the dilemma. She proposes to redefine the discipline of forecasting and demand planning, with an eye toward embracing probability. In the event, companies can move closer to what ought to be their real goal: crafting an agile supply-chain with end-to-end visibility, and the power to respond to actual demand. ''We've gone about it all wrong,'' Cecere says.
