This week on the podcast Mikki speaks to Dr Brendan Egan about exogenous ketones and exercise through the lifespan. They talk first about exogenous ketones, how they might be used in different exercise contexts, where the science is at (and lacking) and potential application in the longer distant events. They then shift gears to discussing exercise in general, and why strength, muscle function and muscle health are important concepts as we age. They discuss the potential for a catabolic crisis and how this can take decades worth of muscle off somebody's frame, they talk about sarcopenia (and how we might best define it through the lens of increasing opportunities to avoid it, rather than from a diagnosis/deficit model) and what counts in terms of strength work as we age (i.e. gardening? Pilates?)Brendan Egan, PhD is Associate Professor of Sport and Exercise Physiology at the School of Health and Human Performance, Dublin City University, Ireland. Brendan received his BSc Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Limerick (Ireland), MSc Sport and Exercise Nutrition from Loughborough University (UK), and PhD from Dublin City University, and completed post-doctoral training at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. Could you explain a little about this? 4.Could you explain what effect this can have on both performance and general health? 5.For someone working with athletes, what are signs one should look after that can indicate that the athlete is suffering from an eating disorder and what should you do and not do to try to help the athlete as this is obviously a complex issue to work with?

Today’s Run Your Life episode was recorded live at the East Asia Region Council of Schools conference being held at the International School of Manila in the Philippines at the end of March. Well-known PE consultants from Canada, Ted and Carolyn Temertzoglou, and Dr. Ashley Casey from the University of Loughborough in the UK all share their perspectves about what a quality physical education experience should offer students. Although Twitter has brought together countless PE teachers from around the world to help share excellent teaching practice and pedagogy, we delve into the caveats of becoming a socially connected educator. Whether already socially connected or just becoming connected, there are major considerations that need to be well thought out as teachers use Twitter as a tool for improving practice. Ted, Carolyn, and Ash all share their valuable insight into what these considerations are. Better engaging students and moving them toward becoming more physically active requires a thoughtful construction of the learning environments we create in our PE programs. In this episode, you will hear about different ways that this end goal can be achieved. It was an honour to have these three great minds together to share their knowledge, passion, and wisdom.
