Digital Oil and Gas
The Future of Offshore Connectivity

Digital Oil and Gas

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 16, 2025 33:29

Offshore oil and gas operations are among the most complex and remote in the world. From harsh weather to limited physical access, these environments demand reliable, high-speed communications to enable modern digital workflows and keep operations running safely and efficiently. As offshore operations become more autonomous and data-driven, the traditional telecom models fall short. Legacy systems struggle to meet rising demands for bandwidth, low latency, and mobility—especially when platforms are unmanned or vessels are constantly on the move. Tampnet is addressing this head-on by delivering a mixed-mode communication strategy that combines subsea fiber, private 5G, and satellite (LEO) into one seamless network. Their infrastructure enables everything from robotic inspections and mobile edge compute to AI-driven automation—critical for modernizing offshore energy. In this episode, I speak with Frode Støldal, Chief Digital Officer and President of the Americas at Tampnet. We explore how a hybrid telecom model is revolutionizing offshore connectivity, driving operational efficiencies, and accelerating digital transformation. From supporting 450+ global platforms to enabling real-time decision-making at the edge, Frode shares a glimpse of the offshore future—one powered by high-speed, intelligent infrastructure.

Episode #86 of the PhysioBib Podcast is the first in a series of three episodes on pelvic health. In which we had the honor to speak with Professor Kari Bø, who probably is one of the most well-known researchers in pelvic health physiotherapy worldwide. She's been a Professor of Exercise Science at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences since 1997 and has published more than 350 peer-reviewed papers on various topics like pelvic floor dysfunction, incontinence, pelvic girdle pain, and exercise during pregnancy. She has also held visiting and guest professorships at multiple universities in Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil. And after our recording she did send us a short bio where she mentioned that she's currently supervising 11 PhD students. So with everything she's involved in, we feel very honored that she took the time to join us for this conversation — where we focused on stress incontinence and the importance of pelvic floor training in physiotherapy. We also touched on broader topics related to pelvic floor care, including the competencies physiotherapists need in this field, adherence to pelvic floor training and much more.

In contemporary physical activity promotion, a quantitative and instrumental approach is the predominant perspective. From this view, physical activity needs to be promoted as a means to prevent various threats to physical and mental health produced by our sedentary lifestyles. With Professor Sigmund Loland, we explore alternative framings that could help us imagine human movement, including mundane activities such as walking to work, in a different way. What if these activities, in addition to their well-documented health benefits, could help us develop a deeper sense of environmental interconnectedness, and the disposition to live and act in more sustainable ways? Our conversation draws on Prof. Loland's recent article The poetics of everyday movement: Human movement ecology and urban walking. Sigmund Loland is a professor of sport philosophy and ethics at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences (NIH), Oslo. He has published extensively in the area of sport philosophy and ethics, including questions about meaning in movement and ecological perspectives on sport. ___________ This podcast episode is sponsored by Fibion Inc. | Better Sleep, Sedentary Behavior and Physical Activity Research with Less Hassle --- Collect, store and manage SB and PA data easily and remotely - Discover ground-breaking Fibion SENS --- Learn more about Fibion Flash - a versatile customizable tool with HRV and accelerometry capability.  --- SB and PA measurements, analysis, and feedback made easy. Learn more about Fibion Research. --- Fibion Helix – Ideal for large scale studies.

"Sustainability isn't just about the environment; it's about the economics and profitability of companies, too. We need the expertise, we need the technology - if you like solving challenges, this is the place to be." In this episode of Seismic Soundoff, host Andrew Geary sits down with Sandy Spørck to discuss the challenges and opportunities in creating a sustainable future within the oil and gas industry. Sandy shares her journey from an engineering mindset to embracing a broader, more scientific view of sustainability and TGS's steps to reach net-zero emissions. They explore the complexities of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), the role of education, and the importance of collaboration in navigating the energy transition. KEY POINTS > Sustainability and ESG: Sandy explains the difference between sustainability (as defined by the UN) and ESG, highlighting how both frameworks guide corporate transparency and environmental responsibility in the oil and gas industry. > TGS's Net-Zero Goals: TGS has committed to reducing emissions from its maritime operations by 75% by 2050 and transitioning to 100% renewable energy for onshore activities. > Decentralizing Sustainability Efforts: Sandy emphasizes the importance of involving a broader range of stakeholders across TGS, creating a sustainability network that brings diverse perspectives. > The Challenge of Climate Transition: Achieving sustainability goals is a complex process that involves trial and error, with the next few years focused on aligning efforts and understanding what works. > Education and Understanding: Sandy advocates for education as the foundation of sustainable progress, not only as a means to lift people out of poverty but also to foster a deeper understanding of the economic, societal, and environmental impacts of energy transition. In episode 78 of the Podcast for Social Research, BISR's Jude Webre (who also teaches at Columbia University and NYU), Sami Al-Daghistani (Columbia and the Norwegian School of Theology, Religion, and Society), and Robyn Marasco and Anthony Alessandrini (CUNY) offer faculty perspectives on the Gaza Solidarity Encampments that have arisen on college campuses nationwide and globally. What happened and what is happening on the ground in NYC and internationally? How do faculty understand their position relative to protesting students, on the one hand, and mega-institutions like Columbia University and City University of New York, on the other? What are the discussions that are happening among faculty—including faculty with different levels of employment precarity and security? How can we understand the Gaza Solidarity Encampments and the faculty response within the context of the wider crisis in academia? Can the student protests inaugurate, in turn, a new movement for faculty empowerment? What is the meaning of solidarity?

We're going back overseas with this episode, this time to Norway. The Norwegian military has a reputation for high fitness standards, and therefore their special operations forces take fitness to another level. This week we'll be digging into the training and testing of the Marinejegerkommandoen, more commonly known in English as MJK or NORNAVSOC (Norwegian Navy Special Operations Command). Directly translated they are the Marine Jaegers, and they live up to that legendary name. Our guest Paul Solberg has a Masters in sport psychology and PhD in health psychology and physiology from the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. He is an accomplished athlete in his own right, having represented Norway as a javelin thrower and also competing nationally in handball, powerlifting and weightlifting. After his athletic career he Coached for several of the best track and field throwers in Norway. These days he is the Head of the Strength Department at the Norwegian Olympic Training Center and Committee, but we're going to spend most of this conversation focused on his previous role. For many years he was the human performance program director for NORNAVSOC, where he built the training program they use today. He has also published close to 40 peer reviewed articles focusing particularly on muscle adaptations, recovery, power-training, motivation and well-being, and reliability of testing. We mentioned Magnus Midtbo's videos where he took the Coastal Rangers and Long Range Reconnaissance fitness tests, so here there are: Coastal Rangers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81Dz26FboU4 LRRP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-zAeifC2sQ

In this episode, Kristian Hauge Solheim shares profound insights he has garnered throughout his entrepreneurial journey. As the Founder and former CEO of Cutters, a flourishing beauty concept in the Nordics, Kristian offers a firsthand account of the strategies that propelled his business's rapid growth and international expansion across multiple countries.     According to Kristian, the key to creating a niche within an existing market lies in narrowing your focus to a singular aspect and dedicating efforts towards scaling and expanding within that space without directly competing with others.     You don't have to invent a wheel with every new venture. By observing successful businesses, identifying what works, and incorporating those proven strategies, you can navigate the existing market dynamics more efficiently.     This approach acknowledges the wisdom of learning from the experiences of others, surrounding yourself with people who are doing what you want to achieve, streamlining your operations, building a team, and capitalizing on unique opportunities.     With a background in economics and business administration from the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH), coupled with experience as a Consultant at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Kristian's expertise shines through. After eight years at the helm of Cutters, he discusses the motivations behind his transition from the CEO position, providing a unique perspective on leadership and succession planning.      Tune in!    Key Highlights from The Show  [01:26] Introduction to the show with Kristian Hauge Solheim  [04:12] Why Kristian stepped out of the CEO position in his company after 8 years  [05:44] When Kristian realized it was time to step out and the process he leveraged   [09:22] Why your role as an entrepreneur has to evolve as your company grows  [12:05] How Kristian built a successful hairdressing brand from scratch in a short time  [14:40] Blue Ocean Strategy: Creating your own market within an existing market   [16:11] Lessons Kristian has learned leading and building his own business   [21:30]  Business Ideas: how to share, talk, and implement your ideas  [22:30] How Kristian managed his business during the COVID-19 period  [28:18] How entrepreneurship has transformed Kristian  [31:00] Practical tips to help you set limits and take care of yourself   [35:00] About Kristan's bottleneck score on strategic thinking   [37:50] Kristian's practical recommendation for entrepreneurs and start-up founders  [39:24] Ending the show    Notable Quotes  ·        As the company grows, your role as an entrepreneur should evolve.  ·        It's not easy to let go, but it's the only way to grow; you can't do everything by yourself if you want to grow.   ·        You don't have to invent a wheel every time you start a new company; look at other businesses, see what is working, and try it out.   ·        Entrepreneurship is not just about ideas; it's also about how you implement and execute them.  ·        Set goals, do everything possible to achieve those goals, know what you can't do on your own, and bring team players to help you.   ·        The people you decide to spend time with will affect you in a very big way whether you like it or not.   ·         If you want to succeed in something, it will be so much easier if you surround yourself with people who are doing exactly what you want to achieve.    Connect With Kristian Hauge Solheim  Website: https://karriere.cutters.no/people/60120-kristian-hauge-solheim  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristian-hauge-solheim-b5881881/?originalSubdomain  Facebook: https://web.facebook.com/kristian.haugesolheim/?_rdc=1&_rdr    ----- How much of the bottleneck in your business are you? What kind of being is the sporting human being? For Professor Gunnar Breivik, a human being is the homo movens and the homo ludens: a playful and active being that explores the world and its own possibilities. Our guest explains key ideas in Heidegger's work in Being and Time while also arguing that the ways of ‘worldmaking' disclosed in sport are more ontologically diverse than Heidegger's classic text opened up for. We explore the four constitutive relations identified by our guest (‘I-Me', ‘I-You', ‘I-Society' and ‘I-Nature') and their typical manifestations in sport. And finally, we explore what kind of 'things' are 'meaning' and 'meaningful life' in Heidegger's work. Gunnar Breivik is Professor Emeritus in Sport Social Sciences at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, where he was Rector of the School 1999-2005. His pioneering work in philosophy of sport over several decades has covered a range of areas including studies of intentionality, knowledge, skills, and other aspects of human experience and action in sport. Moreover, he has conducted many empirical studies in sport and physical activity from psychological and sociological perspectives, including studies on personality in high-risk sports.
