Whether it's a nap, restorative yoga practice or taking 5 minutes in your car before heading into the house to be with your family, humans need rest to thrive. The two explore why western culture doesn't prioritise rest and the detriment this can cause to our health and wellbeing. In today's episode, we have a guest! Kristi Lemos is the owner/manager of Heart Mind Body Wellness, a virtual-based health coaching & wellness company, where she provides individualized health coaching programs to busy women, parents, and professionals. Kristi helps her clients move forward in their health journey using her holistic framework, partnering with them to create actionable steps that build to sustainable habits through food, movement, and mindset. Kristi has over 10 years of experience in the healthcare industry, including coaching, direct patient care, program management, and health equity work. She completed her grad studies in Functional Nutrition and obtained her Master's degree in Public Health, where she found her home in all things social justice and health equity! As a result of the COVID pandemic, Kristi spent time a lot of looking inward, getting clear on her career and life-path, which led her to opening Heart Mind Body Wellness in March of 2021. Kristi's Heart Mind Body program is NOT your typical “cookie-cutter” personal-training or coaching program. It is customized to *each* person and focuses on healing, human connection, self-love, and strategic action planning to help you meet your personal goals for your body and for your life. She helps you connect to your WHY, what drives you to be healthy in the way that makes most sense for YOU and your life. Rather than feeling stuck or limited to society's standards, she helps you figure out what health and being healthy means for you! Kristi is running a “Love Your Body” group challenge in mid Feb-March where she provides 1 private coaching session, weekly group check-ins, and food & movement resources, such as meal planners, and more. In her private coaching sessions, Kristi helps you lay out a blueprint of your personal goals, according to your body's needs and your readiness level for change; and she helps you come up with a customized action plan to get you where you want to me on your health. Kristi plans to run additional group challenges in the summer and/or fall, so stay tuned for updates! In the meantime, she offers a free 30-minute consultation for anyone considering private coaching to find out if you're both a good fit for coaching. My obsession with the mind continues. I just find its abilities, depth, and power so incredible and fascinating. As a continuation of my Ayurveda series: A journey to healthy living with Ayurveda medicine, we'll explore the mind through an Ayurvedic stand-point. We previously talked about aligning your body with Ayurveda medicine. But what is a healthy body without a balanced healthy mind? The mind has a tremendous influence on our overall health. That's what I want to dissect today: how to heal our minds on all levels from the subconscious to the superconscious part of the brain with the three regulatory principles of the body, mind, and soul in Ayurveda? For that discovery, who better than a Neuroscience BA holder and psychiatrist who adds Ayurveda, spiritual practices and wellness lifestyle approaches into the mix to build an unshakable awareness for self-healing. I invited Dr Siva Mohan today to guide my little investigation about aligning our mind with Ayurveda medicine. She has been helping people in her private practice for over a decade to build self awareness, emotional wellness to live a healthier life. Don't forget to check out the 1st segment of this Ayurveda series: Aligning your body with Ayurveda medicine and to stay tuned for:Part 3 of this series - Aligning your soul with Ayurveda. But right now let's focus on the mind. Why illness isn't only in your head : Mind-body wellness + holistic healing There is a link between early childhood loss, trauma & abandonment and adult illness & disease. Years ago people would call an illness psycho-somatic in a condescending way. So being told that a symptom or illness was in your head led a lot of people to think they were either defective or crazy. Fortunately we now recognize that the body & mind are not just linked, they are one. If you grew up in a dysfunctional family or with chronic stressors, the illness and disease you experience could be linked to not healing or processing the past. As you will read in Holistic Healing, our body and mind can recover in a multitude of ways. Often the first step is just recognizing the source of the dis-ease. She is the founder of Awake Psychology, an online Australia-wide psychology practice, the Centre for Mind Body Wellness in Mullumbimby (Australia), teaches Mental Health Aware Yoga trainings world-wide and runs several highly acclaimed online courses. Lauren believes that happiness is our true nature, and that yoga, gratitude, authenticity, compassion, creativity and community help us to cultivate happiness in our lives on an everyday basis.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:1- Stress is a precursor to mental illness. It underlines a lot of physical and psychological illnesses.Mental illness and mental health challenges are extremely common. In many western countries, 1 in 5 report a diagnosable mental illness in the last 12 months period. Another 1 in 5 people struggle without meeting the diagnosable caracterias. 2- Over half of yoga student report starting yoga for mental health reasons and more than 3/4 report continuing practicing for mental health reasons. 3- Creating a safe container in our classes is the first and most important thing we can do as a teacher to support our students, particularly those struggling with mental illness challenges. Be consistent and predictable, give permission to leave and leave the door unlock, use non-judgmental and inclusive language. Invite instead of insist, ask to notice instead of telling what their experience should be. Reduce likelihood of comparison and competition. Look at your own biases and beliefs. Be mindful of touch. Be fully present.4- You don't need to fix people that are having an emotional response during class. You can be there for them, notice what's happening, but oftentimes, there's nothing you actually need to do. We don't need to rescue them.5- Yoga isn't therapy but is therapeutic. Coming together in community, moving the body, mindfulness, practice to regulate our emotions, mood and the nervous system, exercice, are all things that are therapeutic.QUESTIONS SHE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE:What in your life particularly brought you to want to focus your work on mental health and mental illness? Can you define mental illness? As yoga teachers, what should we know about mental illness? How can yoga teacher support students that come to yoga for mental health reasons? And how do we stay within our scope of practice while doing so?What creates a safe container in class? How can we ask permission to touch in a way that makes it easy and comfortable for people to say no.How can we be more present for our students? What should teachers watch out for to not be triggering, to not add on to trauma, or simply not to be counterproductive to their students needs? What are some therapeutic skills yoga teachers need to learn?Any tips for teachers that might have to deal with a moment of crisis in their class?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!DONATE OR BECOME AN EXCLUSIVE MEMBER TODAY.As always, I really appreciate your support with this podcast. In October of 2018, Amanda Webster stood on the ledge of a Canadian hotel room, ready to end her life. A song playing at the right place at the right time brought her down and she made a pact with herself. She was going to give it her all for one year. If she still felt the same desolation after that, she gave herself permission to jump. The only problem was that she had no idea where to start. She’d seen the counselors, taken the medications, journaled and read as many self-help books as her brain could handle. Having majored as a Mind-Body-Wellness practitioner at the award-winning Southwest Institute of Healing Arts in 2011 with a specialty in holistic nutrition, she finally concluded that it was time to get back to basics. It wasn’t eating a salad or taking a Yoga class or reading a book. It was reconstructing her lifestyle and way of thinking as a whole.

Living our lives in the dark is a terrible place to be. Every one of us is unique and although our traumas and issues can be something someone else can relate to, it doesn't mean that they have all the answers or that they will completely understand what we are going through. We don't even have all the answers but sometimes the light reveals itself in a way we would never expect and it gives us that hope to try again and to work on ourselves in order to heal and live the best life possible for us. Co-Host Amanda Webster In October of 2018, Amanda stood on the ledge of a Canadian hotel room, ready to jump and end her life. She had been a victim of sexual assault at the age of 16, lost both of her parents in her very early 20's, and found herself spiraling down into the world of drugs and self-harm. She had sought help but wasn't able to get people to understand the pain she had been experiencing. As she stood upon that ledge with only the thought of easing her pain, a song began playing in the distance that woke her up from her daze and brought her down off that ledge, giving her hope to try once again. Amanda took back her life and is now a Mind-Body Wellness coach with a specialty in Holistic Nutrition. She is also a fitness instructor and coach. She has worked with the It Gets Better project and volunteered as a suicide prevention operator for the Trevor Project. To find out more about Amanda, visit her website www.amandawebsterhealth.com
Have you or anyone you know tried medication and other methods to deal with your mental illness and found that it hasn't worked, or even made it worse? Certified Mind-Body wellness coach, Amanda Webster, offers so much incredible insight and inspiration on the "What's Up Down There?" podcast this week as she shares her experience with dealing with and overcoming depression. “These medical professionals do get kickbacks for writing you these prescriptions. They're not going to make anything if you change your diet. That's not helping them. They don't want you to heal, because if you heal yourself, you're not going to go to them anymore. ” The majority of serotonin is produced in your gut, so if you are not your body is not getting the nutrient it needs, you will not produce the serotonin that could help you feel better. You need to give your body the proper tools to operate at the optimum level. If you feed yourself garbage, you will probably feel that way. “If you're not feeding your body, it's going to affect your emotions and anger is an emotion.” Go more in-depth into these topics and so much more in this inspiring and inspiring episode of "What's Up Down There?" as host, Laurie Seely, speaks with Amber Webster. Key Points: *Gut health does affect mental health. *How the death of Linkin Park singer, Chester Bennington, affected Amanda. *What large farms are really doing with cancerous tumors *The true meaning of the USDA Certified Organic label. *How anxiety and adrenal fatigue are related. *The influence pharmaceutical companies have on doctors and medical schools. *Masturbation as an act of self-love and mindfulness. *What you eat has an effect on your emotions. *You can't help people who don't want to help themselves. *”Fat-free” products used to distract from products full of sugar. Amanda Webster is a certified Mind-Body Wellness coach who has beat depression on her own terms. After being guinea pigged on medications for years, succumbing to addiction and self-harm and nearly taking her life on the ledge of a Canadian hotel room, she realized that she needed to make some changes in her life if she wanted to give herself the best chance possible at healing. Now, she is being decertified as having a Serious Mental Illness (SMI) by the very professionals that told her it was impossible. When she was struggling and wanted to get referrals to other specialists to get to the source of what was causing her mental illness, she realized the incentives doctors had for not giving her the referrals she wanted. Yoga Spotlight: The Importance of Mind-Body Wellness Transcript
Carleton Yeagley, Yoga Instructor/OU Fitness and Recreation intern, talks about the importance of mind-body wellness.
The influence that the mind has over our body and every bit of our functioning is nothing short of amazing. The mind can take us to all sorts of physiological places -- pure exstacy and absolute misery. We've all done it and yet we often credit others for our modd and state or illness or wellness. The mind and body are linked and influenced in an ingenius manner and understanding this clearly and in detail puts you into teh position of authority over how you feel and what your longevity is. I've interviewed the elderly -- those who do it well and those who don't. I've interviewed the youthful in both camps as well. Tune in and hear what I have discovered.

Do you wake up every day overflowing with joy? Gwen Lepard does! She is a Speaker, Holistic Healer, Master Neuro Lingustic Programming (NLP) Practitioner and Bestselling Co-Author of “The Gratitude Book Project”. With over 25 years of healing experience, she’s impacted thousands of people through touch, voice, words and music. Gwen is also an authority on joy! She worked directly with Debra Harry of Blondie, Ginger Baker, who was Erik Clapton’s drummer in the band Cream and Acoustic Alchemy. She also worked with Smooth Jazz greats, Russ Freeman and the Rippingtons in the studio and backstage during the 80’s. In the 90’s she took to the airwaves as an on-air radio personality. In her 9 years in radio she was featured in over 1500 shows and spoke in front of groups of hundreds and even thousands during a fundraiser featuring Heart’s acoustic group, the Love Mongers, in Portland, Oregon. As the twenty first century unfolded, Gwen co-founded a small record label that included an album she personally placed in over 400 stores and through her efforts that album made it to the Grammy ballot in four categories. Like for many others, life took a turn for the worst in the late 2000’s and Gwen lost everything she’d worked so hard to gain… Everything that is except her determination and ability to find the positive in even the most negative experiences of her life. These experiences resulted in her desire to help others end their suffering and live a joy filled life. Today… she’s mastered one of the most profound technologies in neuro-linguistics, combined with structural healing modalities, she’s one of few healers who literally touch the body and mind simultaneously. Through her workshops and message of “Forgiveness to Joy” her clients gain a new way to have more energy, better health, happier relationships and become more attractive to the abundance they desire. In October of 2018, Amanda stood on the ledge of a Canadian hotel room, ready to endher life. A song playing at the right place at the right time brought her down and she made a pact with herself. She was going to give it her all for one year. If she still felt the same desolation after that, she gave herself permission to jump. The only problem was that she had no idea where to start. She'd seen the counselors, taken the medications, journaled and read as many self-help books as her brain could handle. Having majored as a Mind-Body-Wellness practitioner at the award-winning Southwest Institute of Healing Arts in 2011 with a specialty in holistic nutrition, she finally concluded that it was time to get back to basics. It wasn't eating a salad or taking a Yoga class or reading a book. It was reconstructing her lifestyle and way of thinking as a whole.
