This week 2x 66kg IPF Open World Champion Panagiotis “Pana” Tarinidis joins Eric Helms on Iron Culture to discuss the state of modern powerlifting. The two of them recently joined legends, phenoms, leaders and top thinkers of the sport like John Haack, Greg Nuckols, Lya Bavoil and others at the 2024 European Powerlifting Conference in Limerick Ireland. The existence of such events is emblematic of powerlifting's growth, but so too is just how competitive IPF powerlifting has become. At 2024 IPF Worlds the podium for the 66kg class was decided by bodyweight, as all three men had identical totals. In this interview Pana shares what it takes to stay in the fight in modern powerlifting, how hard it is to vie for a championship title when the competition is so tight, and the mindset, passion, and focus it requires.

This week on the podcast Mikki speaks to Dr Brendan Egan about exogenous ketones and exercise through the lifespan. They talk first about exogenous ketones, how they might be used in different exercise contexts, where the science is at (and lacking) and potential application in the longer distant events. They then shift gears to discussing exercise in general, and why strength, muscle function and muscle health are important concepts as we age. They discuss the potential for a catabolic crisis and how this can take decades worth of muscle off somebody's frame, they talk about sarcopenia (and how we might best define it through the lens of increasing opportunities to avoid it, rather than from a diagnosis/deficit model) and what counts in terms of strength work as we age (i.e. gardening? Pilates?)Brendan Egan, PhD is Associate Professor of Sport and Exercise Physiology at the School of Health and Human Performance, Dublin City University, Ireland. Water Witching is an exhibition of new work by artist Shelagh Honan. Her lens-based narrative features photography, sculpture, video, sound and installation, all of which pivot around an audio video called Aistear. The film touches on themes of mortality, transcendence, infinity and the abyss. Its co-ordinates are those of modernist poetic cinema, with long takes which are sometimes fixed in slow motion. The central figure moves through a series of landscapes and appears in a state of co-temporal elision, existing within her own frame of time and communing with nature through a dream-like sequence.Water Witching is open 10-5pm Monday to SaturdaySkip to Main ContentShelagh HonanBiographyShelagh HonanShelagh Honan is a visual artist working in Ireland. She works predominantly with experimental film, photography, projection, sculpture and installation. Her practice concerns the development of new strategies to present narrative through video, sound and projective environments. Her's is a contemplative video practice that encompasses the minimalist, observational art of slow cinema, a genre of film-making that emphasizes long takes with little or no narrative. These films establish an evocative register that connects the viewer with the saliences of a memorialised past and a memorialised landscape. She is a full time lecturer in Photography Film Video in Limerick School of Art and Design.Recent exhibitions include the wom@rts series, opening in Maribor, Slovenia, Vilnius (Lithuania), Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and Rijeka (Croatia), Angoulême (France) and Limerick (Ireland). Giuseppe Torre - ‘Noise, Phenomena and the Digital Psychosis'

BSP Podcast

This episode of Season 5 of the BSP Podcast features Giuseppe Torre, University of Limerick, Ireland. The presentation is taken from our 2020 annual conference: ‘Engaged Phenomenology' Online.   ABSTRACT: With respect to digital technologies, noise is something that is at once both fought and sought. We may wish to minimise noise in communications but require it for encrypting the very content communicated. We may wish to minimise noise when recording sound but also want to use it to improve the fidelity of the recording process. The catch is that noise is both an abstract idea and a concrete thing that does not sit comfortably in relation to systems that are deterministic/probabilistic, such as digital technologies. This is a fact that computer scientists know well but that is systematically overlooked in order to safeguard and improve the functioning of digital technologies, such as digital instruments. Indeed beyond the plethora of different kinds of noises, the comparison between analogue and digital technologies highlights the existence of just two types of noise: one that is naturally occurring (noise) and one that is humanly constructed (pseudo-noise). Digital technologies operate by moving from noise to pseudo noise, in order to then 1) crystallise reality into mathematical constructs and 2) create realities from mathematical constructs. This makes the digital realm a type of technology different from any other, namely, one in which noise is fiercely fought and used for the digitisation process but then relentlessly sought, and always denied, within the digital realm. This observation points to at least two further implications: one is that noise may point to essential differences between analogue and digital technologies; the second is that the presence or absence of noise may lead to either crippled or diverse phenomenologies. To this extent, digital technology, rather than revealing by challenging (Heidegger), has more to do with enabling a psychotic stance towards reality - one in which reality has been made to conform to our mathematically constructed idea of it … and one which might be too much even for a phenomenologist to overcome. These arguments will be developed from the perspective of a digital art practitioner.   BIO: I am a lecturer in Digital Arts at the University of Limerick (Ireland). My research interest lies at the crossroads between digital art practices, open source technology/culture and philosophy. These interests respond to a questioning of the relationships between art and technology and that has so far led me to question under what forms and forces truly creative efforts may, or may not, arise.   This recording is taken from the BSP Annual Conference 2020 Online: 'Engaged Phenomenology'. Organised with the University of Exeter and sponsored by Egenis and the Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health. BSP2020AC was held online this year due to global concerns about the Coronavirus pandemic. For the conference our speakers recorded videos, our keynotes presented live over Zoom, and we also recorded some interviews online as well. Podcast episodes from BSP2020AC are soundtracks of those videos where we and the presenters feel the audio works as a standalone: https://www.britishphenomenology.org.uk/bsp-annual-conference-2020/   You can check out our forthcoming events here: https://www.britishphenomenology.org.uk/events/   The British Society for Phenomenology is a not-for-profit organisation set up with the intention of promoting research and awareness in the field of Phenomenology and other cognate arms of philosophical thought. Nóirín Ní Riain -- A Theology of Listening

Awakin Call

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 25, 2020

Nóirín Ní Riain (pronounced Noreen Nee Reeun) is an Irish spiritual singer, theologian, teacher, author and Interfaith minister. Known as the High Priestess of Gregorian Chant (plainchant, plainsong), she is also known as a singer of Celtic music, Sean-nós and Indian songs.  Nóirín has released sixteen albums since 1978, including three with her sons Eoin and Mícheál (Owen and Moley) Ó Súilleabháin under the performance name A.M.E.N. Her voice has rung out for peace on many continents, from United Nations conferences to gatherings with the Dalai Lama. Born in 1951 in County Limerick, Noirin resided in Glenstal Abbey, a Benedictine male monastery for sixteen years and now lives at the back gate. In the eighties, she recorded several discs with the monks of both Irish spiritual song and Gregorian chant. She has also performed with John O Donohue, Anjelica Huston, Gregory Peck, Paul Winter, David Whyte, Sinead O Connor, and Markus Stockhausen, to name but a few, and she has several times in Ireland and abroad introduced His Holiness, the XIV Dalai Lama, in song. Author of several books, including her autobiography, Listen with the Ear of the Heart, and Theosony: A Theology of Listening, she is currently compiling an Inter Faith Book of Prayer. In 2003, she was awarded the first ever Doctorate in Theology from MIC, University of Limerick Ireland. This was a theology of LISTENING to the Divine, for which she coined the neologism Theosony (Greek Theo (God) and Latin sonans (sounding). In 2017, Nóirín was ordained an Interfaith minister with One Spirit Interfaith Foundation Seminary in London and now she spends much of her time officiating at diverse rituals such as marriages, funerals, naming ceremonies, divorces, house blessings, and other sacred ceremonies. Nóirín also travels extensively, performing with her two sons and offering very popular workshops on Celtic Spirituality, Imagination, Sound as a Spiritual Experience, and Creativity. With her sons, she also leads a select group on pilgrimages of Ireland through Turas D’Anam (Journey of Your Soul), visiting the megalithic stone circles and ancient sites, and experiencing Irish music and art in both tradition and contemporary expression. She began singing lessons at age seven and later studied at University College Cork (UCC), specializing in religious music for post-graduate work. Persuaded by a teacher to become a singer instead of studying law, she developed as a performer despite an almost incapacitant fear. Despite having a voice that seems a divine gift, in public performances, she has said “I went through agonies. I've let so many people down, because I wouldn't turn up on the day. I remember even a live television program, and being just stuck to the seat. Not being able to get up and sing my song. I was a nightmare…Now, I'm nearly the opposite really," she says. "I can't sing for enough people. Nervousness is narcissistic. It's all about yourself. It's when you get in the way. Now I know that it is only the voice coming through me, I'm only a tiny vehicle, of something else." Nóirín attributes this change to "a lot of different little incidents,” including a divorce. “I went back to do a doctorate in theology; I was around 49 when I finished my doctorate. Until then, I had been wandering around, I had never found the answer. Then I found the answer – it's not you. It's not my will be done, it's thy will. There is a force – call it whatever you will – much bigger than us." Nóirín’s first triumph as an ordained reverend nearly 15 years after receiving her theology degree was administering divorce blessings. “I hate the word divorce – it’s ugly. In the same way that two people came together they can come apart. It’s a formal way of saying, ‘this is God’s thing too’. The church regards divorce as a failure. I don’t. It has been a blessing in my life. I wouldn’t have done the doctorate. I wouldn’t be here talking about my ordination, if I hadn’t been divorced.” That she is uniquely placed to do so is evident from her attending the marriage blessing of her ex-husband, composer Micheál Ó Súilleabháin, to Helen Phelan. “There are two kinds of heartbreak: the one that shatters the heart and the one that splinters and lets the light in.” Nóirín feels the light has been coming in all these years. In the context of the 2020 global pandemic, she and her sons Owen and Michael Ó Súilleabháin have initiated Dámh Imeall - The (h)Edge School -- a series of  retreats that offer immersive online experiences around thoughtfully curated themes. Join us in conversation with this deeply inspirational figure!

So much fun and so much love! Qool DJ Marv takes us on a 3-hour, 4-decade, 5-Borough tour of New York records. Qool Marv is one of New York’s finest, most skilful and most respected DJs. As resident in the city’s Meatpacking District, Lower East Side and now Dumbo SoHo House establishments, and as HBO’s DJ of choice, the Philly native and three-decade New York citizen has played for everyone from Martin Scorsese and Oprah Winfrey, to Harry Belafonte and Prince. Returning to I.NY after a one-week, three-set visit in 2017, Marv will feature with Aoife Nic Canna, Mark ‘Scope’ Murphy, and Donal Dineen at various events in this year’s programme. He has a Thursday night all to himself though, and will be touring New York music history at the I.NY Festival Club. In his own words… “rocking Club anthems, B-Sides and game changing jams from all five boroughs of NYC for the head nodders, break dancers and urban stylers are what’s up and in store. Expanding upon the foundation of last year’s NYC Hip Hop Influences freestyle set, this time around it’s all about the jams with the groove to make you move, and the lyrics that became everlasting Hip Hop quotables.” #thisisiny #wildatlanticway #discoverireland #whatsonlimerick Thank you @thisisiny https://www.facebook.com/thisisINY/ + https://thisisiny.com/ + https://thisisiny.com/five-borough-tour/

Today’s Run Your Life episode was recorded live at the East Asia Region Council of Schools conference being held at the International School of Manila in the Philippines at the end of March. Well-known PE consultants from Canada, Ted and Carolyn Temertzoglou, and Dr. Ashley Casey from the University of Loughborough in the UK all share their perspectves about what a quality physical education experience should offer students. Although Twitter has brought together countless PE teachers from around the world to help share excellent teaching practice and pedagogy, we delve into the caveats of becoming a socially connected educator. Whether already socially connected or just becoming connected, there are major considerations that need to be well thought out as teachers use Twitter as a tool for improving practice. Ted, Carolyn, and Ash all share their valuable insight into what these considerations are. Better engaging students and moving them toward becoming more physically active requires a thoughtful construction of the learning environments we create in our PE programs. In this episode, you will hear about different ways that this end goal can be achieved. It was an honour to have these three great minds together to share their knowledge, passion, and wisdom.
