Florida State switched things up with its first scrimmage of the spring on Thursday, giving head coach Mike Norvell and his staff an early glimpse into where the team sits after putting four practices in the books. “I thought it was a good opportunity for guys to see exactly where they are,” he said following the scrimmage, noting that it was the earliest he's held one in spring. “No coaches, no extra assistance, having to go out there and communicate, operate, understand the play that you have but also know the details and fundamentals.” “For the most part, I thought the guys did a really good job of understanding. It was a lot better than what I really expected.” With ACC referees in attendance to emphasize a need for mindful reps, the coach said “there a few focus penalties, things that showed up” that will be targeted as the team moves to a more cohesive place. “In the understanding of what to do, we've got to continue to improve on how to do. The techniques and the fundamentals, some things with our footwork, our eyes — those are all things that we get an opportunity go and get better.” The offense, in Norvell's eyes, missed a few opportunities (“throws we'd definitely like to have back, missed opportunities where we had a chance to finish a play but didn't”) but still managed to execute on some big plays, saying running back Kam Davis and wide receiver Malik Benson both found the endzone while also namedropping running back Caziah Holmes. The offensive line, in Norvell's eyes, did a solid job while the staff mixed things up with a variety of personnel groupings. Speaking on his quarterback room, he offered some high praise for early-enrollee Luke Kromenhoek, calling his performance “outstanding” for a first-time out. Speaking on the defense, Norvell said the linebackers have “been one of the pleasant surprises to start the spring,” complimenting DJ Lundy for looking “like what we needed him to look like” in a veteran role. Byron Turner, Sione Lolohea, Marvin Jones Jr., Tomiwa Durojaiye, Darrell Jackson and Pat Payton, who had a sack, were pinpointed when talking about the defensive front, who Norvell said “did a really solid job” while making the same caveat that there are fundamentals and finer details still deserving of polishing. Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis can compete for the Heisman, and he's already proven to be a top contender. ● His dual-threat statistics from last season were spectacular. The 24 TD to 5 INT ratio was a great start. So was his 5.1 yards per carry average and 7 rushing touchdowns ● Clutch plays versus big-time teams. Travis placed stress on a defense and he will be even better in 2023 with more experience and more weapons. ● Travis has several big games this year to showcase his talents: LSU, Clemson, Miami and Florida will be some of the games he can increase his Heisman Trophy odds. ● If possible, it would be great for FSU to play UNC and quarterback Drake Maye in the ACC Title Game. That would be an all-eyes on the quarterback situation. ● The last segment also discussed FSU's future with quarterback commitment Luke Kromenhoek, another dual-threat quarterback with a lot of talent. Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis can compete for the Heisman, and he's already proven to be a top contender. ● His dual-threat statistics from last season were spectacular. The 24 TD to 5 INT ratio was a great start. So was his 5.1 yards per carry average and 7 rushing touchdowns● Clutch plays versus big-time teams. Travis placed stress on a defense and he will be even better in 2023 with more experience and more weapons.● Travis has several big games this year to showcase his talents: LSU, Clemson, Miami and Florida will be some of the games he can increase his Heisman Trophy odds.● If possible, it would be great for FSU to play UNC and quarterback Drake Maye in the ACC Title Game. That would be an all-eyes on the quarterback situation.● The last segment also discussed FSU's future with quarterback commitment Luke Kromenhoek, another dual-threat quarterback with a lot of talent.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!BetterhelpThis podcast is sponsored by BetterHelp. If you're thinking of starting therapy, give BetterHelp a try. The Florida State Seminoles sign a top five recruiting class if they do what? Today's Locked On Seminoles broadcast breaks down what needs to happen for Mike Norvell and the Noles to finish inside the top five. Segment one begins with what's already in the class to better grasp what's still needed: ***Discussing key recruits like quarterback Luke Kromenhoek, running back Kam Davis, safety KJ Bolden, cornerback Charles Lester, linebacker Jayden Parrish, and wide receivers BJ Gibson, Elijah Moore, and Lawayne McCoy defines how well FSU continues to bring in speedy skill recruits. ***With all of the skill talent, the Noles need to land more big-bodied defensive linemen, as well as offensive linemen, to make this a more complete recruiting class. To compete with Georgia, Alabama and Ohio State, among others, FSU needs even more talent in the trenches. ***The second segment goes into the importance of Davis. He's a talented prospect from Albany (Ga.) Dougherty. Not just on the gridiron, but off the field, he's a special young man. Discussion points regarding personality and humbleness, as well as how he's been helping the Noles recruit, are inside this second segment. ***The final FSU segment transitions to the actual field. The Florida State versus LSU matchup and how three areas will be key for FSU to handle well. There are specific points about quarterback Jayden Daniels, Maason Smith as a big-time defensive tackle, and the issues wide receiver Malik Nabers brings. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! However, Fitz and Snyder will provide some extra context to Martin's decision today on the show. Also, is it just happenstance that Martin, the 41st overall player in the Industry Ranking, committed to Penn State after four-star quarterback Luke Kromenhoek, five-star defensive end Dylan Stewart, and four-star wide receiver Nick Marsh visited campus? T-Frank wants to know how planned the experts think these commitments are and asks our experts. A star-studded Friday Next, T-Frank will ask the group about those names and their reactions to visiting this weekend. Fitz and Snyder will share what they know about the previous trio and New Jersey wide receiver Jaylen Hornsby. They'll also discuss 2025 defensive tackle Trent Wilson and the other notable defensive linemen who made it to campus this weekend. Both Fitz and Snyder have made it known that they think Penn State is about to go on a recruiting run this spring. Who might be next? And which positions does the class need to score quickly? Finally, the group will review Penn State's latest offers to 2024 prospects and beyond. Unlike last week, the Nittany Lions have sent out offers to the current class, including two massive offensive linemen. Phil Trautwein extended his recruiting board to include Florida tackle Deryce Plazz and Texas titan Bennett Warren. Check out the show to find out more about the new offers. Happy Monday... Noles Nation... Welcome to your first official game week of 2022. The Florida State Seminoles football team is back on the field at Doak for a game that matters this weekend. Get the tailgates and TVs ready. Football is back. Thank you so much for listening to Noles News Now, your podcast home for all the news happening around Florida State sports three times a week. I'm your host Brian Pellerin on this Monday morning, guiding you through the weekend that was. The biggest note, yeah, I already told you. Fall camp is finished and football is here. And if it doesn't quite feel like football yet for you, look in this article and check out the video of Jordan Travis smashing the rock. It's a sign of achieving a goal, overcoming obstacles and showing progress and work from a player that has the mindset to win so to end fall camp. It makes sense that the undisputed leader of this team, quarterback Jordan Travis, took the hammer and closed camp the best way possible. Travis gets his first chance to show off the improvements he's made in his passing game this weekend against Duquesne. Nobody needs to take that leap as much as the Noles signal caller. We'll see that Saturday, but there's still plenty of game week activities to see between now and then. First and foremost, it'll be Mike Norvel's weekly press conference today. In case you forgot how that goes, each Monday Norvell adresses the media -- typically recapping the week before after reviewing the film and looking ahead to this weekend's game. With no game to review, he'll probably tackle many of the same questions as he has this offseason with some extras about Duquesne. We'll have a recap of that presser posted on Tomahawk Nation dot com later today with the highlights. This week on Seminole Wrap, Max Escarpio and myself take a look at some of the biggest standouts from the final week of fall camp, look ahead to what we want to see from FSU against Duquesne and some news out of Baton Rouge as LSU appears to be down an offensive playmaker for the FSU on top of the already lingering QB battle there. Lots going on as we do a final fall camp episode. Later this week, we'll drop a full season preview to get you set for the season ahead as well looking at predictions, wins-losses, surprises and more. That episode expected Friday. The final fall camp episode is available now in your podcast feed. College football not the only sport getting underway as plenty of future Noles gridiron stars have started their high school seasons. Among them, Benedictine High School QB and FSU commit Luke Kromenhoek. He dropped 4 touchdowns in the first half of a 45-0 route that included a nice dime down the right sideline you should find in this article if you haven't seen it already. Meanwhile, the FSU soccer team has notched their first W of the season. After a draw in their opener on Thursday against 12th ranked South Carolina, the Noles beat Georgia in Athens 3-1 to get the first win of Brian Pensky's tenure as head coach. Florida State jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first 28 minutes and never looked back. They return to Tallahassee for their home opener on Thursday against Auburn. That's it for this Monday's Noles News Now. We'll be back on Wednesday to update on the biggest happenings early on this opening game week of 2022. Until then, be sure to follow this feed so you're up to date on the latest this football season. Thanks for listening. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
