Our final Diana Wynyard episode has arrived all too soon! We look at her two final key roles, in Alexander Korda's film of Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband (1947) and The Feminine Touch (1956), a nurse drama that's better than its silly title. And in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, we cover the 2025 Toronto Silent Film Festival, focusing on three films built around miraculous performances, Victor Sjostrom's The Wind (1928), starring Lillian Gish, Victor Fleming's Mantrap (1926), starring Clara Bow, and Josef von Sternberg's The Last Command (1928), starring Emil Jannings (ably supported by Evelyn Brent), before turning our attention to a film that was entirely new to us, the blatantly anti-capitalist The Johnstown Flood (1926), featuring Janet Gaynor in her first major role.  Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s:    AN IDEAL HUSBAND (1947) [dir. 60 years ago, a pilot for Star Trek began filming. Would it be a success, or would it fall flat and not get picked up. The answer to both is YES! This week we look back at the original series and some of our favorite moments on Enjoy Stuff!   Let's look back at the beginnings of one of the most successful franchises to ever be created. Beam up for Star Trek, the Original Series.     News A new Stranger Things/Dungeons & Dragons crossover comic will feature Eddie Munson There are now seven new frog species named after Star Trek captains.  We have information on Star Trek: Section 31, Strange New Worlds, and Star Trek: Lower Decks We found a fun A&W commercial featuring Star Trek RIP to Star Trek co-creator Jeri Taylor and legendary actress Teri Garr Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Shua is trying to get through all the great things he's been enjoying the last couple months. And in the meantime he's been listening to some Christmas music. And NO! He's not ashamed of it at all. Jay has been watching a series on Peacock called The Resort. It's an interesting mystery that stars Cristin Milioti and William Jackson Harper about a couple that make some interesting finds on a resort island.    Sci-Fi Saturdays This week Sci-Fi Saturdays returns. Jay examines the 2007 space movie Sunshine. The movie is about a group of astronauts that are reigniting the sun, but what's more interesting is the impressive cast. Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh, Rose Byrne, Benedict Wong, and Chris Evans are among the big names that are found in this movie that has drifted into obscurity.  Read his article on RetroZap.com.  And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. There are some new locations from Agents of SHIELD season 3. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy TV!  When Gene Roddenberry was trying to get Star Trek off the ground, it took a lot of convincing of executives, the help of influential stars, and a lot of reworking of ideas, stories, and characters. They created the pilot and it wasn't quite up to the standards that would manage to get it on the air. But eventually, the classic episodes we know and love did find their way to our TVs. Much has been written about and discussed about it's legacy and influence, and we share some of the episodes that made it special to us. Brace for impact and get ready to explore Star Trek the original series.  Do you enjoy the original Star Trek? Which episodes do you like? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Boldly go!” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. This week, Pop Screen is warming up its fingers to peruse the lexicon of love with Mantrap, a short film starring ABC - but mostly their lead singer Martin Fry - and directed by Pop Screen's patron saint Julien Temple. Once again, we're joined by Gav Smith from the very fine My Favourite Film podcast, as he takes on his most challenging assignment to date - persuading Graham that early '80s synth pop is good, actually. Along the way, we discuss the film's romantic lead Lisa Vanderpump and her later career on reality TV, the wayward career of the prolific Temple and whether The Fast Show has rendered jazz inherently 'nice'. If this strikes you as a fairly obscure choice of film even for our podcast, you're not wrong - this is the first, and no doubt last, film we'll cover that was originally released on Laserdisc... If you don't want us to have to run away with a touring New Romantic band in order to make ends meet, you can support us on Patreon where you'll also get a plethora of articles about forgotten Asian cinema, classic Doctor Who, bonus episodes of this show and deep dives on the videogame industry. This week's Clara Bow Acteurist Oeuvre-view episode sees our star's debut at Paramount, in a supporting role in Dancing Mothers, followed by a starring role in what is sometimes considered her best silent film, Victor Fleming's Mantrap (both 1926). Bow plays two versions of an amoral child-woman, one irritating and one dazzling. We contemplate the Flemingesque woman (so much better than the Hawksian woman, although admittedly, the latter sounds snappier), with comparisons to Sternberg and Bergman. And much like most 70s romance comics, this one’s a lark of a story about a girl whose mother can’t stop plucking away her boyfriends. You see, Mom’s 36 but she’s still a looker and can get crunk with the kids of today and their Lil Jon. Things come to a head when the daughter meets Neil Brazzers, a corny AF dude who is angling for a quadruple with Mom, Daughter and 70s Stan Lee.Continue the conversation with Shawn and Jen on Twitter @angryheroshawn and @JenStansfield and email the show at worstcollectionever@gmail.com

SUMMARY An underdog herself, Krista Beth Driver discovers the surprising history of how Vietnamese women helped American nail salons proliferate. In her first book, Mani/Pedi: A True-Life Rags-to-Riches Story from Boat to Beauty Salon, Driver tells the story through the experiences of Charlie Vo, a Vietnamese salon owner in Los Angeles. Beginning with Charlie escaping from Communism, the tale extends to present-day with Charlie as a mani/pedi mogul and multi-millionaire. “Charlie would end up employing hundreds of technicians in a career that allowed those who wanted to work hard the opportunity to make as much money as they wanted to earn. She also gave many the skills and the opportunity to open their own shops, creating dozens of entrepreneurs throughout Southern California.” KEY POINTS Tippi Hedren, an actress and humanitarian at Camp Hope (a transitional refugee camp in Sacramento), is the first to create mani/pedi employment opportunities for Vietnamese women. The mani/pedi tradition dates back 3000 years ago to Egypt and Asian countries where nail color indicated societal status (e.g., red = upper class). Men are first to paint their nails, but the practice eventually spreads out among women. Vietnamese salons democratize the exorbitant cost of getting a mani/pedi. Charlie Vo, a gritty and resourceful Vietnamese refugee, continually looks for opportunities to improve her family circumstances as well as her own skills. Olivett Robinson, an exuberant African-American woman whose racial background should have put her at odds with Charlie, moves instead from customer to business partner. The number-one driving force among women becoming manicurists is to provide a better life for their children. Charlie and Olivett open several mani/pedi salons while overcoming racial tensions, standing up to bullying inspectors, and knocking down language barriers. QUOTES FROM DRIVER “She was making this trip…so that her children could dream. She wanted them to imagine all the dreams she had for them. She wanted them to believe in this new life.” “The passengers came from every economic level—rich and poor—it didn’t matter…They all had the desire to escape Communism and build a new life in America. Escape was the great equalizer.” “Olivett Robinson…has an infectious soul and being around her let me believe anything was possible.” “ManTrap…not only provided good [mani/pedi] service, but they got you in and out. It was a salon that valued a woman’s time.” BUY Mani/Pedi: A True-Life Rags to Riches Story  RECOMMENDATION Watch Charlie and Olivett discussing the documentary about their partnership that led to ManTrap, a nail salon chain based in Los Angeles.

Manifest Podcast 019 - Rory St JohnRory St John, one of the emerging talents from Dublin's budding electronic music scene, is the maker of future influenced dancefloor and non-dancefloor music alike. Heavily influenced by the purity of the techno sound, his previous releases have been along the same vein. From the early days of hardcore and hard dance, Rory's interest was always focused on producing music. Equipped with an early edition of Cool-Edit and Evolution at the age of 16, his early productions ranged from hardcore techno to more melodic based tracks. After taking a break from production while completing his commitments in university, Rory's debut was on Eire Electronic's VA compilation, alongside his influential techno compadre's Sunil Sharpe and Fran Hartnett. Some years down the line, Rory, was adopted by Mantrap records for his debut 12", Ear Cycle EP, which was a sellout release. Mantrap records significance to the Irish and international scene was to expand as it provided platform for an abundance of emerging artists.Rory returned to college to complete his postgrad in Music & Media Technologies where, over the 2 year period, built a real-time audio and visual manipulation environment, a facet which still stands to him in his current productions.Progressing from a vinyl only DJ, to hardware only liveset, Rory now incorporates hardware and software in the studio and live, to achieve his idea of the techno sound. Often funky, usually deep, always influenced by what the sounds of the future might be, his livesets have made their way across Europe from the former U-Club Bratislava, to Berlin, and back to Ireland. Now residing in Berlin, De, Rory is focused on installing a new studio and continuing to develop his sound and skillset, in both music production, and in freelance graphic design. Rory's latest releases on Limetree Records, and Teskoba Records have received genuine appraisal from some of the leading names in the techno scene, and forthcoming releases on Singularity Records (Uk) and Unknown Forces (Uk/De) are sure to do the same.More infos and sounds :http://rorystjohn.com/http://soundcloud.com/rory-stjohnTracklist :__________Withering Zithering - Recovery Path - Acre RecordingsC Mantle - Congener 2 - Acre RecordingsImminent Starvation - Link Addiction - Ant ZenCristian Vogel - Ninjah Koula - Kickin RecordsExium - Cloner - Audio AssaultJoton - Loud Flash (Pacou Remix) - NewrhythmicLucy & Xhin - LX3 - CLRStructural Form - Rior (Doryk Remix) - TrusT RecordingsPeter Gual - Restos De Carn - NubroncaRory St John - Pyre - TrusT RecordingsArrestar - Thoughts & Emotions (Oscar Mulero Remix)Synapse - They Come in Waves - Bass GunSwarm Intelligence - Gurgle - UnreleasedClouds - Consciousness (Randomer Remix) - Turbo RecordingsMax Duley - Elegant Manoeuvres - ARCC-System - Analog Overdose - Pareto ParkLag - The Collapse of Yzordderrex - unreleasedChris McCormack - Your Green Eyes - MaterialsGo Hiyama - Feeling - Audio AssaultDipole - Electron Cloud - Sonic GrooveJB3 - Time - NovamuteMslwte - Discorderd - TrusT RecordingsOscar Mulero - 46 (Regis Antagonists Mix) - Warm UpThe Black Dog - You're Only SQL - Soma
