This week, I am joined by Mr. Big's Billy Sheehan & we're diving into the stories behind songs from across their discography! From their worldwide # 1 smash hit “To Be With You,” (which was never intended to be a single); to fan favorites “Addicted To That Rush,” “Colorado Bulldog” & “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy (The Electric Drill Song),” to their cover of Cat Stevens' “Wild World,” we cover the Mr. Big musical spectrum. We also discuss: their new live album “The Big Finish: Live” which serves as the band's triumphant victory lap, given their retirement from touring; where the band name “Mr. Big” came from; the unique story behind the “Wind Me Up” riff; Billy's unique approach to the bass solo, and how his has evolved over the decades; a little joke the members of Rush played on the band; and so much more! We've got a unique twofer for you this week. First up is Mr. Big frontman Eric Martin! Eric had been at it for a decade before Mr. Big happened. He fronted bands in the Bay Area and recorded a solo albums that were as poppy as it gets. Luckily, Mr. Big worked out and they just completed their "last" tour and released the live album, The Big Finish as a memento. They've been extra busy beecause they also released a new album earlier this year. He didn't have much time, but we get into his early days, the post "To Be With You" period, and what his plans are now. Then we hear from Bossa Nova royalty Bebel Gilberto! Her dad was the legendary Joao and her step mom was Astrid, but she's built her own incredible career taking her native music into the future. She chats with us for a bit while making lunch about it all. Enjoy! www.mrbigsite.com www.bebelgilberto.com

Mike Soboslai is back again with his BIGGEST song yet. Mr. Big's campfire sing-along ballad "To Be With You" was a surprise hit in 1992, especially as the grunge era was taking hold. This infectious tune was dramatically different from the band's usual intricate hard rock style, showcasing a softer side that few saw coming. Known for their technical prowess and complex compositions, Mr. Big's other fan favorites include the blistering "Green-Tinted Sixties Mind" and the shred-heavy "Addicted to That Rush." Despite never recapturing their U.S. success, Mr. Big became (and remained) HUGE in Japan. Join us as we explore the band's career and see if we've been missing out here in the States. And yes, we'll even touch on their more... uniquely titled tracks like "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy." Interview by Kris PetersMr. Big have been captivating music lovers since their inception in 1988 with an irresistible blending of rock and blues music that is as infectious as it is beautiful to hear. After releasing their self-titled debut album in 1989, Mr. Big - (vocalist Eric Martin, guitarist Paul Gilbert and bassist Billy Sheehan) achieved universal breakthrough success with the follow-up Lean Into It, an album that spawned the smash single To Be With You that set Mr. Big on a collision course with destiny that has continued unabated ever since.A combination of musical brilliance, integrity and genuine love for their craft has allowed Mr. Big to perform for over three decades, but, sadly, all good things must come to an end and for Mr. Big that ending is delivered in the form of The Big Finish touring extravaganza that has wound its way around the world at select destinations from last year, winding up - at this stage - in Romania on August 27.But in true Mr. Big style, the band was not content to leave their fans with only the memories of their final live performances, but also announced their tenth studio album - appropriately named Ten - would be unleashed with a strong nod to the entire history of the band in a musical farewell that promises an eternal gateway into the sonic sensibilities of a band who may never be rivalled. With the release of Ten rapidly approaching its global birth on July 12, HEAVY had the honour of sitting down for a one-on-one with founding member Billy Sheehan to talk about the album, Mr. Big's legacy and more."It's our 10th studio record," Sheehan proudly affirmed. "There have been a lot of other records. The first time we played in Japan, we had a wonderful time. And they knew we wouldn't be coming back until the next record - which was going to be a cycle that happens - so they wanted a live record. And we didn't really have the facilities because we were on tour with Rush in America, and so the sound man took a DAT tape, a digital audio tape that they don't have many more that cost $7.95, and put it in and hit record on our show with no multi-track, no fixes, no overdubs, no nothing. So our recording budget for the whole show was $7.95 (laughs). That tape became the first Raw Like Sushi. I think in Korea it's sold like 350,000 units. I don't know how many in Japan, but I hope we recouped our investment (laughs). But it was kind of cool that it was completely real and no fixes, no turning the audience up or any of those cheaters that you can do. So we've done a lot of records. And there's a million bootlegs, too. There was a great bootleg store in Japan - I think they're long gone now - selling CDs, and they had the most amazing set of bootlegs you could imagine. I got the Band of Gypsys, Jimi Hendrix demos and rehearsals. I got Genesis', The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway demos. It's the most amazing thing, the Montrose first record, all the demos, Boston demos that led up to these iconic records. And so we'd go there after our show, and they'd already have our record with artwork for sale (laughs)."We ask Sheehan to tell us more about Ten musically."We took a break on a tour and were able to go in and record," he explained. "I was super busy and couldn't make it for the writing sessions, so I came in and just played bass and that was kind of cool. I just could go, what do you got? Okay, maybe this will work and I would put a little bass line down. The songs were very together, but it was nice to be able to just come in and create a baseline that just came from nowhere, just from my first impression of how the song went. I didn't have a lot of time to even rehearse the songs. So in a way, that was kind of good, too, because it was spontaneous and came right, I didn't think it through. Thinking often… thinking will ruin a song pretty easily. And that happens with writing a lot. You just come up with a part and like it (but) the next day you think maybe we should hold on a second. Wait a minute. We had it. And now you're changing your mind? So that was a cool way to approach it. I just went in and played bass, and we came up with some cool stuff."In the full interview, Billy discussed a range of topics related to music production and performance. He talked more about Ten and its significance as their 10th studio record. Billy provided a detailed account of the recording process for the singles Good Luck Trying and Up On You, emphasizing the value of spontaneity and avoiding overthinking when creating music. The conversation also touched on the art of song arranging and hit songwriting techniques, exploring the concept of motifs, key changes, and song structures. We discussed the deliberate use of songwriting mechanisms to create hits and the intentional avoidance of radio-friendly song titles by bands like Led Zeppelin. Additionally, he explored the importance of live performances and spontaneity in music production, emphasizing the raw energy and genuine feel that it brings to recordings, plus heaps more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. BIO: Legendary recording artist and ground-breaking entertainer Tony Orlando got an early start in show business, reaching national charts at the age of 16 with his recordings of “Halfway to Paradise” and “Bless You.” Orlando became the first vocal artist to sign with Epic Records. The young entertainer continued to set records, eventually becoming one of the youngest vice presidents in the history of CBS Records. After agreeing to record a demo record for a song called “Candida the song became a surprise hit, launching Orlando into the spotlight. Tony Orlando continued producing hit songs, releasing the #1 single “Knock Three Times” in 1971. The single became the top song of 1971, selling over six million copies worldwide. In 1973, Orlando recorded perhaps his most famous song, “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree.” The hit stayed at #1 for a year and soon became an anthem of hope and renewal for American veterans from the Vietnam War to Desert Storm. By 1974, Tony Orlando had developed his very own variety show. Led by Orlando himself along with Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson, the show was the first multi-ethnic variety show on television, running for four seasons. Orlando's career spans over 60 years. Tony currently has a radio show called Saturday Nights with Tony Orlando – Tony spins the greatest hits from the 60s, 70s and beyond every Saturday from 10pm to midnight ET on WABC radio. Also Tony Orlando's Autobiography Halfway to Paradise by Tony Orlando (Author) and Patsi Bale Cox (Author) Tony has written an autobiography as warm and heartfelt as his songs. Halfway to Paradise is rich with stories from the music world-from doo wop to the disco era, from early recording with Gerry Goffin and Carole King to recent concerts in Branson, Missouri and across the United States. It's also full of behind-the-scenes detail of how it felt to be at the top of the entertainment heap-with his #1-rated CBS show, Tony's life in front of and behind the camera was grand, but sometimes not all it seemed. Orlando succumbed to one of the familiar antidotes to the pressures of a big life: drug use, with its predictable toll on family and friendships. And even as his career was soaring, he was unable to save his best friend Freddie Prinze from a fatal downward spiral. With a return to roots-and to the close-knit family that has always sustained him-Tony restored the order and creativity that have allowed him to thrive through four decades of exuberant entertaining. Halfway to Paradise is a wise, funny and spirited life story, and a must-read memoir for fans. available at amazon.com FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT TONY ORLANDO VISIT www.tonyorlando.com official website www.facebook.com/OfficialTonyOrlando Facebook https://twitter.com/TonyOrlando Twitter www.instagram.com/officialtonyorlando Instagram https://music.youtube.com/channel/UCXYgkzCQz80gxd0Zeiaws8Q YouTube www.wabcmusicradio.com/show/saturday-nights-tony-orlando ABC RADIO https://www.wabcmusicradio.com/podcast/saturday-nights-tony-orlando/ It's Saturday Nights with Tony Orlando– Tony spins the greatest hits from the 60s, 70s and beyond every Saturday from 10pm to midnight ET. www.wabcmusicradio.com TONY ORLANDO Discography Albums Bless You and 11 Other Great Hits (1961) Make Believe (1969) (with 'Wind') Before Dawn (1973) Tony Orlando (1978) I Got Rhythm (1979) Livin' for the Music (1980) Halfway to Paradise: The Complete Epic Masters 1961–1964 (2006) Bless You (2014) Solo singles "Halfway to Paradise" (1961) "Bless You" (1961) "Happy Times (Are Here To Stay)" (1961) "Chills" (1962) "At the Edge of Tears" (1962) "Shirley" (1963) US "I'll Be There" (1963) "What Am I Gonna Do" (1963) "Tell Me What Can I Do" (1964) "To Wait For Love" (1964) "I Was A Boy" (1969) "Make Believe" (1969) "I'll Hold Out My Hand" (1969) "Don't Let Go" (1978) "Sweets For My Sweet" (1979) With Tony Orlando and Dawn Candida (1970) Dawn Featuring Tony Orlando (1971) Tuneweaving (1973) Dawn's New Ragtime Follies (1973) Prime Time (1974) He Don't Love You (Like I Love You) (1975) Skybird (1975) To Be With You (1976) Christmas Reunion (2005) Support us!

Did you watch the popular 70s TV show, “Chico and the Man?” The very popular comedian and actor, Freddie Prinze, starred as Francisco “Chico” Rodriquez. He released a comedy album recorded at Mr. Kelly's in Chicago called “Looking Good.” His biggest breaks came on the Jack Paar and Johnny Carson shows. Freddie made several appearances on the Dean Martin celebrity roasts and can be heard in the background of the title song of his friend Tony Orlando's album “To Be With You.” Freddie was married to Kathy Cockran with whom he had Freddie Prinze Jr. He and Kathy had marital problems, and weeks after their divorce he took his life. Months before his death he had signed a five-year, $6 million contract with NBC television.

The Buffalo band opened up for Van Halen back in 1980. Billy left Talas to join David Lee Roth's band in 1985. After leaving Roth's band, Billy formed Mr. Big, who had the smash hit, "To Be With You." The song was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in 1992.

Sunday night football on NBC exposed a few Bears issues to a national audience, wouldn't you say? The defense was poor, the offense was dinky and dunky and the result was a 20 point loss in Los Angeles. We look at all that happened against the Rams while turning our attention to the home opener against 1-0 Cincinnati as Dan Doinks will be attending his first Bears game since we became familiar with what the hell Covid-19 meant. Does this qualify as an Andy Dalton revenge game? Will JF1 get more than five plays? Will the secondary give up any more 50+ yard bombs? Has Matt Nagy learned anything in his three+ years as a head coach in the NFL? Plus tons more, including our resident sharp and whale Rick Feelsmen as well as the boys' can't-miss fantasy advice. 0:00 - 04:13 - New intro tune with compliments to Sufjan Stevens, Coach Cuse and Bill Doinks 04:13 - 05:44 - What's on tap tonight? 05:44 - 53:35 - Bears-Rams review, Bears-Bengals preview, NFL chatter. How are we feeling after Sunday night's 20 point loss? Does Matt Nagy know what he's doing? What happened on defense? Offense? Quarterback play overall? Who wins the Zero Doinks Cornish Hen Week 1 MVP as voted on by the Fans N Eggs? Dan Doinks walks us through Week 2's opponent, the Cincinnati Bengals. Will JF1 get more than five plays this upcoming week? How will the oh-fer NFC North fair in Week 2? 53:35 - 84:12 - Hamm's N Spreads. Rick Feelsmen laments his 1-2 week but he's nothing if not resilient and of sound mind as he shoots for 2-1 this week, at worst. The boys discuss what games catch their eye in Week 2. Everton chatter returns here for the soccer fans among us as they are undefeated and unstoppable. I think this is where we chat about some Ted Lasso, too? 84:12 - 84:49 - Where can you find us on the interwebs? 84:49 - 91:25 - Bears Fantasy Corner. Who won between the Doinks with their Week 1 picks? Is John Lithgow actually alive? Who is the Taysom Hill trash player of the week, presented by Glad? Most importantly, which Chicago Bear player can win you your Week 2 fantasy battle? 91:25 - 103:56 - The B1G Minute. Illini still lead the Big Ten West. Gophers bounced back from a Week 1 defeat. Iowa football might be really good this year, eh? Ohio State loses a regular season game for the first time in Ryan Day's coaching career, right? 103:56 - 109:35 - Let's Wrap this M'F Up. What weird thoughts are still bouncing around in Dan and Bill's minds? 109:35 - END - Outro. Special thanks to Mr. Big for the inspiration of "To Be With You," credited to Bill Doinks.

In this lightning (and wife-ening) episode, Phil & Jake are joined by Beth & Ali to rapid-fire rank karaoke, dippin’ sauce, landlines, the Golden Gate Bridge, bagels, goats, Cadbury Creme Eggs and carpets on the List of Every Damn Thing.VOTE HERE to help choose which item on the List of Every Damn Thing should be re-ranked in an upcoming episode (you can vote once a day).If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter and Instagram).Check out the Little Anti-Racist Library project that Beth is working on.SHOW NOTES: We mention many of our favorite karaoke songs, including “Last Christmas” by Wham! (we don't cite it specifically, but Jake also likes George Michael’s “One More Try”), “Easy Lover” by Philip Bailey & Phil Collins, “Dream A Little Dream of Me” by The Mommas & the Poppas, “To Be With You” by Mr. Big, “Bernadette” by the Four Tops and “Blow the Whistle” by Too $hort. Dimples is a San Francisco treasure. If you like karaoke, overpriced drinks, open gambling, a weird sex-work vibe and possibly indoors cigarette-smoking, go there. Ali doesn’t mention the song “Last Resort” by name when she brings up Papa Roach in honor of Beth’s hometown of Stockton, CA. The band is actually from about sixty miles away in Vacaville, CA, but hey what’s the difference really? We mention “Cherry Pie” by Warrant, but not as an acceptable karaoke song. Also, “November Rain” by Guns ‘n’ Roses has way too much instrumentals to be a good karaoke song. Even the radio edit. Phil tells a story about a former student teaching him to mix hot sauce and butter, which is the recipe for buffalo wing sauce (usually made with Frank's Red Hot sauce). When Jake refers to Phil’s mom having a “Bucky Walter” in her home, he’s trying to use Boontling, the local dialect of the small town of Boonville, CA. It looks like he misuses the term, though, as a “Bucky Walter” is specifically a payphone (he should've said “Walter Levi”). “Breaking Up Was Easy in the 90s” is a country song that Phil listens to when he goes to the hardware store. The paint color of the Golden Gate Bridge is neither golden nor red. It’s international orange. Here’s a brief video with some clips of the GG Bridge “singing” (as described in the episode by Jake and Ali). If you’re in Petaluma, CA and have a bagel-hankering, go to The Bagel Mill. The Marble Rye is the king of bagels. It's made by dividing the dough into two piles and mixing cocoa powder into one pile! Strange that it doesn't taste like chocolate. When Jake & Beth inexplicitly exclaim “Cram!” they’re referring to the comedy of Tony Baker. Googling teaches us that goats are, in fact, ungulates. We discuss the use of goats in religion. In Islam it's traditional at the end of Ramadan to slaughter a goat and donate it to the needy. Phil didn't know the word off the top of his head but it's Qurbani and it comes from a story about Abraham. In non-majority Muslim places there's not really a framework for donating and the needy aren't expecting goat meat. The scapegoat is a different story from Hebrew tradition in which there were two goats and one was sacrificed while the other one was marked up to carry all of the sins and let go into the wilderness. We're not religious but it seems like the scapegoat got off easy (although it does carry the burden of guilt) which is the opposite of how we'd always understood the expression. We brought on an Elliott to talk about an Elliot! For quite a while, Puerto Rican writer/director Elliott Feliciano (OutFest's "To Be With You") only saw examples of trans women in media - and the few trans men he did see were all white. It wasn't until he came across model Laith Ashley that he first felt he saw himself. Elliott talks transitioning at thirty-five, and why he uses both "he" and "they" pronouns. Also, we dig into Elliot Page's epic announcement - the joy *and* the controversy, oh my!

Hardrock trifft Herzschmerz, toll!

This super-group ROCKS SO SOFT! Its a group made up of not-so-terribly well known musicians; Blond Fred Armisen, Emilia Estevez, Darryl Hall, and Darryl Strawberry. How is it that Teresa and Katie don't like hair bands, but they do love this song? The Answer: Sing-along. We learn all about shredding on the guitar (Blooms, Bong, and twee.) We get into the oddness of one particular line that nobody knows anyway. Are there blue traffic lights? Is this just another dirty old man song? Maybe not, but it is man-splainy and condescending. Also, let's enjoy Katie going full-on prude in this episode. Stay tuned, there's a sing along at the end, and even Mike joins in for some rare on-mic banter. Mr. Big founding bassist Billy Sheehan and singer Eric Martin bring the rock & roll to TIJ! Billy talks about starting Mr. Big right after leaving the David Lee Roth “Eat ‘Em And Smile” solo band, and he and Eric tell the story of their surprise hit single, “To Be With You,” the role that MTV played in their success, and what it was like touring with Rush and Bryan Adams in the 90s. They talk big in Japan, losing drummer Pat Torpey last year, and whether Mr. Big will ever tour again. Plus, Billy has tons of ridiculously hilarious stories from this days with David Lee Roth including skunk beer garage sessions, Canadian “peelers,” and the historic reunion gig that never was. Billy also tells the true story about how he nearly joined Van Halen himself!
Folk genius, passive aggressive grossness, electronic steel drums, and spandex pants. How could we be talking about anything other than Wild World, originally by Cat Stevens, covered by Maxi Priest and by Mr. Big. Outro Music is To Be With You, also by Mr. Big.

Every morning, when I open my eyes, it is like I am joining a radio program already in progress. A song I may or may not have heard recently is playing in my head, on repeat, like some sort of Manchurian Candidate type instruction directing me to assassinate my own sanity. The song varies as does the genre. Sometimes I know why the song is there. Other times, I have no idea why or how the song got stuck in my head, especially when it is a song I haven’t thought about in years. This music, however, exhausts me because I don’t know where it came from. I wonder if others have a similar experience as I.

So check out the article over on io9, which sums up the (no sarcasm here) masterpiece and includes a few GIFs, and then hit play on the video right when we do for a totally new M&BLC experience! This jam is worth watching. When you’re done with this, you should check out the episode where we read the “X-Cutioner’s Song” storyline with Pat Loika! You may not know his name on first glance, but if you've listened to a radio even once in the past two decades, you're bound to know his peerless voice: as the lead singer of '90s band Mr. Big, he landed radio smashes with songs like "Just Take My Heart" and the number one classic "To Be With You." He still regularly tours and records, and he has just released his latest solo record, "Timeless," a collection of bold pop covers, and now the amazing ERIC MARTIN is stopping by the Buzz to discuss his current projects and his chart-topping career!
