Our final Diana Wynyard episode has arrived all too soon! We look at her two final key roles, in Alexander Korda's film of Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband (1947) and The Feminine Touch (1956), a nurse drama that's better than its silly title. And in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, we cover the 2025 Toronto Silent Film Festival, focusing on three films built around miraculous performances, Victor Sjostrom's The Wind (1928), starring Lillian Gish, Victor Fleming's Mantrap (1926), starring Clara Bow, and Josef von Sternberg's The Last Command (1928), starring Emil Jannings (ably supported by Evelyn Brent), before turning our attention to a film that was entirely new to us, the blatantly anti-capitalist The Johnstown Flood (1926), featuring Janet Gaynor in her first major role. The last in Caro's Tahoe miniseries (but not the last of Tahoe content!) takes us to the Cal-Neva Hotel, a property that has changed hands many times, been host to celebrities, mobsters, politicians, and more over the years, and most recently, inspired a 2018 film featuring some folks you might be familiar with! Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe are the most famous of the folk said to occasionally haunt the Cal-Neva and other Lake Tahoe properties, but they aren't alone. David Stenn has a good “day job,” writing scripts for television (like The L Word and Boardwalk Empire) but his passion is film history. He has funded restoration of films long thought lost or unavailable, including a recent “find” featuring Clara Bow. He is also the author of two definitive biographies, Clara Bow: Running Wild, first published in 1988 and Bombshell: The Life and Death of Jean Harlow. They are both “must-read” recommendations, along with his passion project, a documentary called Girl 27 that is now available free of charge on YouTube. And if his face or voice seem familiar, it's because he appears regularly on Turner Classic Movies.
In our FINAL episode of the standard version of The Tortured Poets Department, we dissect Track 16: Clara Bow. But don't worry, we'll still be diving into each of the songs on The Anthology very soon

Welcome back to Evolution of a Snake. In this episode, we're introducing a new format: Sister Songs. This is a series where we draw parallels and themes between two (or more!) songs from different points in Taylor Swift's discography. On the menu today is an evergreen connective tissue: Taylor's musings on fame, being replaced, and ageing. Initially, we were inspired by the mashup she performed for Stevie Nicks in Dublin. But as we got into our in-depth lyrical analysis, it quickly became clear there are more than just two songs to pay attention to. We delve into Nothing New and Mirrorball to flesh out our analysis and better understand how Taylor's relationship to the public eye has evolved but also stayed the same over the years. As always, you can find more EOAS on our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/swiftologist
David Stenn was hired by the TV series Hill Street Blues immediately after graduating from Yale, becoming the show's youngest writer ever. David then wrote She Was Marked For Murder, an NBC movie that earned an Edgar nomination from the Mystery Writers Guild of America.David returned to television as Producer of 21 Jump Street, then Supervising Producer of Beverly Hills, 90210. David's first biography, Clara Bow: Runnin' Wild, which was published by Doubleday and edited by no less than Jacqueline Onassis, became a national bestseller. Variety raved, "Only rarely will you find a book that is as total a winner on every level as Clara Bow: Runnin' Wild." His second biography, “Bombshell: The Life and Death of Jean Harlow, again, edited by Jacqueline Onassis, was cited by the New York Times as one of the year's notable books.“It Happened One Night…At M-G-M,” David's discovery for Vanity Fair of Hollywood's best-suppressed scandal, brought vindication to rape survivor Patricia Douglas after sixty-six years in hiding and is now considered an historical progenitor of the MeToo movement. The story was adapted into Girl 27, a documentary film that David directed. I've read David's excellent book on Clara Bow and seen Girl 27. Both are powerful pieces about Hollywood's long history in how power players treat both celebrities and those who wish to become celebrated.David then served as Co-Executive Producer of The L Word and Supervising Producer on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. His most recent screenplay assignments have been for Martin Scorsese; Leonardo DiCaprio/Warner Bros.; and Working Title.David is a passionate supporter of film preservation. He serves on the Film Committee of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Board of Directors at the UCLA Film & Television Archive in Los Angeles.

Try and come for my job. We've got a special episode to discuss “The Tortured Poets Department” songs that Taylor Swift added to The Eras Tour setlist this weekend. We share our reactions and observations about the changes like the visuals in “But Daddy I Love Him,” the levitating platform in 'Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?' and how “So High School” feels like “Fearless”- era Taylor. We cover the UFO effects in “Down Bad” and how “Fortnight” mirrors the music video. Finally, we have to talk about the epic marching band in “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” and the Clara Bow and “A Chorus Line” references in “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart.” The TTPD section of the Eras tour is an emotional, fun, and powerful journey in The Eras Tour! As a hardcore Swiftie, I was elated when I found out that Taylor Swift had a new song named after Clara Bow, and I thought, what better time to help people who may not know her story get to know her better? Clara was born desperately poor in early 1900s New York and suffered from a bad home life with an alcoholic father and a mentally ill mother. However, by the time she was a teenager, she won a beauty contest that shot her into stardom. Her fame came with a price, and she had her life intruded on by paparazzi; she was exploited by her managers and suffered from her own mental health issues. We all had a couple days with 'The Tortured Poets Department' now and we've seen some controversial (unpopular opinions) about certain songs. We're pretty sure 'WAOLOM' is about Ms. Rodrigo and Clara Bow isn't - we'll explain why! AND did Taylor really already put out her first song about Trav and did she mean it to be so spicy?? Plus we update on Taylor breaking news besides TTPD (we know its hard to think about anything else) !! Fun Fact Clue: Deadpool Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This week, Stauney and Sadie are indulging, and celebrating the release of a new favorite album. We HAD to do a recap on the latest Taylor Swift release and talk about how much we love it, as well as taking some time to appreciate some of the members of the Tortured Poets Department mentioned in her anthology. We discuss the criticism and different aspects of being an artist in the public eye that would influence your creativity and work. Then we take some time to talk about the Patti Smith and Stevie Nicks references, as well as explain the history of Clara Bow, the mythology of Cassandra and Diana of Ephesus, and the women from the podcast that we think would be members of the TPD. "She released a phantom clear vinyl, which is only availible at Target. I don't collect vinyls, but I could just... put it on display. It'll probably be an impulsive purchase, along with that weighted dinosaur plushie I bought last month.... *nervous laughter*." "PAPOW PEW PEW PSHHDEHIUEHWFNSSHHHH POW and those other explosion noises." "Yeah, the- the- the machine thingy. That's what we're calling it for now." "Did you guys see the black dog in the music video? Yeah, that's my favorite part." ‼️ Trigger Warning: After I talk about my Swiftie origin story, I do talk about how Taylor uses some drug and alcohol metaphors in her new songs, so if that's a hard topic for anyone to listen to, I suggest that you don't listen to that segment. I am not trying to influence anybody in any sort of negative way, I just felt like it was necessary to address that some of the metaphors she uses aren't always the best. ‼️ How many of you are HYPED UP about Taylor Swift's new album! Or should I say, ✨double album✨? I know I am- considering I let out a bloodcurdling scream when she announced it during the Grammys (ask my family, they could hear it from across the house!
Clara Bow (1905-1965) was an American film star of the 1920s. Her flapper persona helped bring about the “it” girl and popularize the fads of the era. Her sudden retirement at the age of 28 essentially erased her from later films as the studio system grew, but she left an undeniable imprint on film history. This month we're telling the stories of these women: we're talking about disappearing acts. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason.
