Easter 2024 Pt. 1: An Act of True Love By Louie Marsh, 3-3-2024 Last slide Bob Maxwell 1) True love is COSTLY. “1Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. 3Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” (John 12:1–3, ESV) · Am I willing to PAY the price? “21And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.” (Mark 10:21–22, ESV) 2) True love is often MISUNDERSTOOD. “4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, 5“Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it.” (John 12:4–6, ESV) · Judas speaks for MANY. “4There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? 5For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they scolded her.” (Mark 14:4–5, ESV) · Judas uses this to make himself look COMPASSIONATE. 3) True love puts Jesus FIRST. “7Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. 8For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”” (John 12:7–8, ESV) “7For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. 8She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial.” (Mark 14:7–8, ESV) 4) True love makes an impact that lasts FOREVER. “9And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.”” (Mark 14:9, ESV) · True Love is never WASTED. “4Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Corinthians 13:4–7, ESV) Never for Nothing by Margaret Becker, 1987 It's never for nothing When you love with no return It's never for nothing Light your candle in the darkness 'Cause it's never for nothing Your friends say you're the fool For loving with nothing to gain But they can't see the reward That you'll claim So, hold on to the holy promise (that says) "No labor of love is in vain" Precious tears are changed to jewels In the rain - Margaret Becker, 1987 58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:58, ESV) · I cannot see the END of my acts of love. “8Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.” (1 Corinthians 13:8–11, ESV)
What's up, dudes? It makes sense that a Christian music record label would release a version of the Christmas Story, right? Yup. Sparrow Records, founded in 1976 by Billy Ray Hearn, then A&R director at Myrrh Records, did exactly that! In 1987, Sparrow released a promotional album to radio stations containing several of their biggest artists narrating the Nativity story. The B-side contained some Christmas IDs of these stars wishing us all a Merry Christmas. The Christmas Story narration is done in this order: Michael Card is up first, followed by Scott Wesley Brown, Margaret Becker, Steve Camp, and Richard Souther. Michael Card then takes it up again, this time followed by Steven Curtis Chapman, Geoff Moore, Rick Florian of White Heart, Deniece Williams, and Steve Green. The musical selections were taken from Steve Green's album Joy To The World! The Scripture reading was taken from The New International Version translation.Steven Curtis Chapman? Check. The guys from White Heart? Yup. Deniece Williams?!? Well, let's hear it for the voice! So grab your donkey, knock on all the doors to the town's inns, and remember what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown, as the Sparrow artists narrate the Christmas Story!Check us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Totally Rad Christmas Mall & Arcade, Teepublic.com, or TotallyRadChristmas.com! Later, dudes!
The prayer of a person going through very difficult times has been turned into a song by Margaret Becker and Keith Getty. Here are the words: Jesus, draw me ever nearer As I labor through the storm; You have called me to this passage, And I'll follow, though I'm worn.
Mark Pogue is a Christian singer/songwriter who performed with many Christian artists such as Morgan Cryar, Rick Cua, Margaret Becker, Gospel Music Hall of Famers: Degarmo & Key , The Rambos, Neal Morse and others. He had his own record deal with Word/Pakaderm records in the early 90's. His debut album Mark Pogue & Fortress, Restoration had 5 top 10 hits in CCM markets and was produced by John & Dino Elefante (of Kansas fame). Though, he left the music industry to be with his family, he never quit writing but stayed involved in church and family life playing for worship leaders such as Israel Houghton, Gary Oliver, David Baroni, and others. In 2016 he released another album: "Through the Fire" which continued in the melodic rock style with a few updates of modern technology and some songs that were more vertical in their focus on God. Mark has had some songs placed on independent projects but has emerged with new idea. The single series is aimed at bringing people together to sing and worship God. The songs that form the deepest connection and impact will be a part of a live worship experience. No force feeding here. You will decide the songs that elevate you to worship and speak your heart's cry as we overflow in His presence and change the world around us with His amazing love.

As a pioneer voice in the genre, Becker carved out her own spot amongst the CCM greats with radically truthful songs and edgy performances that shook the industry. At the time, audiences had never seen a female rocker who wrote songs packed with veracity. A trailblazer among her peers, Becker earned 4 Grammy nominations, 4 Dove awards, 7 SESAC Artist of the Year awards, more than 20 No. 1 radio singles and sold millions of records. Now and an author, speaker and producer, she aids new young Millennial artists in finding their own voice. Now, she's able to plant seeds of hope into others as they go out to perform, growing the scope of her influence exponentially.
If you are in need of some encouragement then you should definitely listen to today's episode! Margaret Becker shares her story of change. This week I am talking with one of my favorite producers in music! Brent Milligan currently produces and plays bass for Steven Curtis Chapman. He's also worked with Michael W. Smith, Charlie Peacock, The Backstreet Boys and more. We are discussing his journey as a producer, a touring musician and A&R rep as well as the importance of taking advice from the people you look up to and putting it into practice in your career by becoming really good at one thing as a time.Show Notes:Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. Talking Points:*I grew up taking bass and cello lessons.*I knew a couple of guys who went to Belmont University who were starting to have some success as musicians in Nashville playing for people that I had heard of and it got me thinking I could do it too.*I got to Nashville because a mutual friend knew the artist/producer Charlie Peacock who was my favorite artist.*I got a voicemail from Charlie Peacock saying he needed a bass player for a festival and he felt like he was supposed to call me.*I had auditioned for Margaret Becker’s band previously and she referred me to Charlie.*I met Charlie at his studio and played through some songs and got to know him, then we flew to Sunshine Fest in Minnesota and that was my first real gig.*Charlie asked to hear my songs and decided to teach me songwriting and producing and use me as a bass player from time to time.*I had an open invitation to sit on his studio couch and say nothing and just be invisible. Just listen and watch which I was going to do at every opportunity.*He let me use his studio whenever he was not using it and I would go in and work and learn from his engineer Craig Hanson.*Charlie taught me to not cross pollinate musical styles when recording. Don’t do jazz licks on a pop record, etc.*He taught me a lot about being a family man and be a musician.*It’s okay to be faithful to your wife, faithful to a church, not doing crazy stuff.*I met Brent Bourgeois through Charlie and had done some work together and he called me and asked if I wanted to play bass for Michael W. Smith because he just got hired to be his band leader.*I played for Michael W. Smith for 7 years. At the same time, I was also writing and recording demos and a band wanted to record one of my songs. The A&R guy asked who they wanted to produced their album and they liked my work. The A&R guy was Eddie DeGarmo who I had played bass for on his band DeGarmo and Key’s tour. He knew I produced the demo and wanted to get me work producing and asked them if they wanted me to produce their album.*Everyone I’ve worked with so far has been by referrals and relationships.*Start building competencies .*Charlie said that If you establish a competency as a producer or bass player, then people will be more likely to interested in your production. As opposed to just walking up to them and saying I want to produce.*If you establish competency as a songwriter or musician, people will take you way more serious when you say you want to produce records.*After playing for Michael W. Smith, I got asked to do A&R at a label and got off the road for 2 1/2 years.*Then I got a call to start working for Steven Curtis Chapman. I had subbed in for his bass player over the years so we had a relationship. He heard a record I produced and asked if I would produce his next record Beauty Will Rise.*Even when you’ve been successful, there is still that voice inside that says you’re not good enough.*When producing with Steven Curtis Chapman, he usually brings in a voice memo and I have him track a guitar to a click track, then I will make a sketch of what I think might work by building tracks and a sound around his scratch track, then I send him an mp3 to see what he thinks and getting adjustments from him.*Then he either thinks it great and keep going with it or he likes certain parts about it but maybe wants other parts to go in a different direction. I’m trying to get guidance from him, then once we get the course set, then I’ll start getting live instruments tracked.*Then he’ll come in and sing and do bgv’s.*Picking players and mixing engineers for an album is usually a collaboration between me and the artist.*I became the head of A&R at Forefront Records because their guy left and they asked Charlie Peacock to be their interim A&R and he had to find his replacement and thought I would be good for the position.*An A&R person does project management by helping the artist think through direction musically and think through song selection, producer choices, making sure there are songs that work for radio.*You’re helping the artist turn in an album that’s going to help them with their career the most.*You’re the go between for the artist and the label.*Start with developing one competency.*If you want to be a producer, start producing tracks. Learn to play your laptop like an instrument.*Start doing whatever you aspire to do at whatever level you’re able to do it.*Start putting up videos of you playing your instrument on You Tube and make a presence for yourself.*If you have content that people can see what you do, that let’s people know your talent level and can open opportunities for you.*You can make videos everyday and get your name out there.*If you reach out to someone and ask them for coffee, they will usually meet with you and give you advice.*It comes back to relationships.*Be interested in people. Brent Milligan is a Nashville based producer and musician. Originally from Baton Rouge Louisiana, he has lived in Nashville for many years with his wife Sarah and three kids, and has toured with or worked on albums by Michael W Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman, The Backstreet Boys, Toby Mac, DC talk, Paul Baloche, and many others. He can usually be found in his studio, spending time with his family, playing tennis, or making chocolate chip cookies.

Jeff and Allen have another conversation with Jennifer Knapp about the many things she is currently working on. The discussion takes us through her recently finished theology degree from Vanderbilt University, her upcoming tour and finally one of her favorite cooking methods. For those unfamiliar with Jennifer Knapp’s work, she has been a recording artist since the late 1990s. She started her music as a CCM artist. After an extended hiatus and coming out as a lesbian Jennifer started the second half of her musical career outside CCM. She refers to her current musical trajectory as career 2.0. In addition to being an accomplished singer and songwriter Jennifer is also the founder of a non-profit called Inside Out Faith. Inside Out Faith helps faith communities educate, affirm and foster support of LGBTQ persons and their allies. In this episode Jennifer shares how her theological education is shaping her current work and gives some solid recommended reading for anyone looking to move forward in their religious exploration. Her recommendations include works from Karen Armstrong, Diarmaid MacCulloch and John Shelby Spong. She also shares more about her upcoming tour in which she plays songs from her career 1.0 as a CCM artist. She talks about that the tour was at the request of her fans, many of whom have grown right alongside Jennifer and view many of her songs, old and new, as the soundtrack of their lives. Her upcoming Christmas music with Margaret Becker is also discussed. Finally, we end on a lighter note as Jeff and Jennifer nerd out on the wonder that is cooking Sous Vide. They share go-to recipes practically turning the show into a foodie podcast. To find out more about Jennifer Knapp and all her work visit her website at www.JenniferKnapp.com. Girls rule on this episode of Frontline Rewind featuring Riki Michele of Adam Again and Adel Meisenheimer, Executive Producer of Frontline Rewind. – It’s “Girls Gone Wild†in Frontline Rewind 47 as executive producer, Adel Meisenheimer, interviews Riki Michele, of Adam Again fame. It was fitting to get the girls together on the cusp of Michele’s female-infused new solo album, Push. She and producer, Margaret Becker, primarily wrote the new work, which also features several girlfriends. Getting together in Michele’s San Diego home provided an opportunity to celebrate the new release and reminisce about her very first solo album, Big Big Town. Songs on this first project were written by Gene Eugene (Adam Again) and Steve Hindalong (The Choir) and produced by Gene Eugene. Of course it has funk-rock influences and Adam Again-infused production. Songs featured are from Big Big Town, released digitally for the first time since its 1989 release on Broken Records, and a couple favorites from Push.
We are excited to have Riki Michele join us on the show Tuesday April 14th. Many of you might recognize her name as the longtime member of the group Adam Again. Her new project PUSH, which was produced by Margaret Becker released just last week. Be sure to get a copy of this. It is available on iTunes here. Also, check out this great write up on the new record here.

He earned his degree in classical piano and conducting from the University of North Texas, and during that time was a member of the award-winning Jazz Singers. Later seasons in both Nashville and in his current home of Los Angeles brought opportunities to tour as a keyboard player, arranger, and musical director for such diverse artists as Grammy-winning singer Rebecca St. James, American Idol superstar Katharine McPhee, Ginny Owens, Margaret Becker, Bryan Duncan, Ryan Farish, and many others. Nowadays his production work ranges from film scores and orchestral/choral writing over to pop, rock, R&B, soul, and jazz production. His music has appeared in numerous TV shows and films, including American Idol, America’s Got Talent, The Sing-Off, and his arrangements have been published by Hal Leonard. He also does a considerable amount of sound design work for companies such as Big Fish Audio, Native Instruments, and MOTU. My conversation with David discusses how he finds work as a composer, how he interprets music requests from music supervisors, writing songs that stick, social media, the power of word of mouth, and whole lot more! I think this one is going to really appeal to all of you musicians that are interested in writing music for film and TV. Aaron Bethune. Music Specialist.
