I welcome back the legendary Roine Stolt from The Flower Kings to discuss LOVE, the new album from the Swedish progressive rock masters. This 17th studio release is sure to appeal to longtime fans of the band, as The Flower Kings have produced an album that builds on their recent releases while calling back to their classic sound. Roine was kind enough to tell me the stories behind the recording and writing of LOVE, the guitars he used, and even a few surprises about the band's co-headlining tour with Neal Morse & the Resonance. Neal Morse and Chester Thompson join the podcast to talk about the new band Cosmic Cathedral and their debut album 'Deep Water.' We also talk about Genesis, songwriting and more.
My guest for this episode is legendary guitarist Phil Keaggy. Phil has joined forces with Neal Morse, ex-Genesis drummer Chester Thompson, and noted session bassist Byron House to form a new prog rock supergroup called Cosmic Cathedral. The band's debut album, Deep Water, drops April 25 from Inside Out Music. Phil was kind enough to tell me how the project came about, the making of the record, his musical beginnings and more. Cosmic Cathedral rocks, swings, grooves, and is full of all the proggy goodness you'd expect from a project involving Neal Morse. PROG SUPERGROUP COSMIC CATHEDRAL RELEASING DEBUT ALBUM FEATURING NEAL MORSE…CHESTER THOMPSON…PHIL KAEGGY…BYRON HOUSE… ZOOM SPECIAL EDITION WITH EX GENESIS DRUMMER CHESTER THOMPSON ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS Hello everyone and we are back for another edition of Interviewing the Legends… I'm your host Ray Shasho. How do you make an album that is different to what is usually expected of you? One answer is to work with musicians who also have decades of experience and worldwide recognition, plant a few seeds, then stand back and see what happens. For the Cosmic Cathedral project and their debut album ‘Deep Water', this is exactly what Neal Morse did, joining up with Chester Thompson, Phil Keaggy & Byron House. As Keaggy comments: “It was an honor to be invited and included in the making of the Deep Water project with Neal, Chester and Byron.” Much of the album was created from jam sessions where Morse's long-time audio partner Jerry Guidroz put the best parts together, then Morse and the band developed them into songs and epics. “Much of the album, and certainly “Time To Fly”, came directly from the jam sessions, where we were spontaneously creating in the room. Even a lot of the lyrics just came out of our mouths! It was amazing!” What resulted from all this was a more groove-orientated feel, which Morse calls a “prog meets yacht rock meets The Beatles” kind of album, with an unmistakable jazz fusion influence: “These guys are real groovers: even if they're playing proggy stuff, it has more of a Steely Dan feel to it, but when Phil and I start singing it sounds like The Beatles! In Deep Water, the ‘New Revelation' section is based on a jam that turned into something that could have been on a Sting album! So, there's a lot of variety here.” And Chester Thompson says, “I am super excited for people to hear this album. There was great communication between all the players. One of my favorite projects I've ever been a part of!” And coming from someone who's played with Genesis and Frank Zappa, that's quite a statement! The album will be available as a Limited CD Digipak, Gatefold 2LP & as Digital Album. NEAL MORSE & THE RESONANCE ANNOUNCE NEW RELEASE ‘NO HILL FOR A CLIMBER' AND LAUNCH FIRST SINGLE “ALL THE RAGE' EXCLUSIVE SPECIAL EVENT ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS WITH RAY SHASHO! Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. Neal Morse is an American singer, musician and composer based in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1992, he formed the progressive rock band Spock's Beard with his brother Alan, he joined Dream Theater's co-founder and then drummer Mike Portnoy, formed the super-group Transatlantic. In 2002, Neal Morse became a born-again Christian, left Spock's Beard and began a Christian rock solo career, releasing many progressive rocks concept albums about his new religious faith, He continued to play with Transatlantic and formed three new bands with Portnoy, Yellow Matter Custard, Flying Colors and The Neal Morse Band. One of his most recent projects included two critically acclaimed solo releases with D'Virgilio, Morse & Jennings. Throughout his long career, Neal Morse has often been a musical collaborator, usually with some of the greatest prog musicians across the world. This time, Morse has brought that collaborative spirit closer to home. The new album by Neal Morse & The Resonance – entitled ‘No Hill for A Climber' will be released November 8th, 2024, and the title is taken from a resonant line in Barbara Kingsolver's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Demon Copperhead. PLEASE WELCOME AMERICAN SINGER,SONGWRITER,MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST NEAL MORSE TO INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS … PREORDER NO HILL FOR A CLIMBER BY NEAL MORSE AND THE RESONANCE OFFICALLY REALEASED NOVEMBER 8TH Pre-order now here: https://nealmorse.lnk.to/NoHillForAClimber To coincide with the announcement, the track ‘All The Rage' has been launched with a brand new video. Watch it now here: https://youtu.be/BSXjvdHqADk?si=F_0g0Inzs48UoJvy “Awesome album! I can safely say this will be a fave of the year for me!” – Mike Portnoy Faithful to any Neal Morse prog album, ‘No Hill For A Climber' features two epics (the 28 minute ‘No Hill For A Climber' and ‘Eternity In Your Eyes', which clocks in at 22 minutes) as well as three shorter songs: ‘Ever Interceding', ‘All The Rage' and ‘Thief'. The latter, Morse admits, is his current favorite: “It's so different… it's in all these different sections, and I'm really happy with the way each part has come out. It's pretty crazy. There's even a really cool King Crimson-style instrumental bit in the middle that Chris Riley originally came up with at the Radiant School a couple of years ago.” For all of these reasons, Morse believes that the whole album is unique, but notes that “if I was going to compare its structure to an album I've done in the past, it might be along the lines of ‘Bridge Across Forever' or Spock's Beard's ‘V'; it's not that it sounds at all like those albums, it's just structurally similar. It has voices and playing styles and soundscapes that many people will have never heard before! Everyone you work with changes you a little bit, so even sound a little different on this one, but I hope that everyone will love it!” FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT NEAL MORSE & RADIANT RECORDS VISIT https://nealmorse.com/ Official website https://nealmorse.com/morsefest-2024-2025/ Morsefest official website https://www.facebook.com/nealmorse/ Facebook https://x.com/nealmorse Twitter https://www.instagram.com/neal_morse_official Instagram https://www.youtube.com/user/NealMorseMusic/featured YouTube TOUR DATES Moresefest November 8, 2024 - November 9, 2024 White House, TN Morsefest 2024 USA @ New Life Fellowship November 15, 2024 - November 16, 2024 Zoetermeer, The Netherlands Morsefest 2024 EU @ De Boerderij January 17, 2025 - January 18, 2025 Brentwood, London, UK Morsefest 2025 UK @ Trinity Church NEAL MORSE Discography With Spock's Beard Main article: Spock's Beard § Discography The Light (1995) Beware of Darkness (1996) The Kindness of Strangers (1998) Day for Night (1999) V (2000) Snow (2002) Singer-songwriter albums Neal Morse (1999) It's Not Too Late (2002) Songs from the Highway (2007) Songs from November (2014) Life & Times (2018) Late Bloomer (2024) Neal Morse & The Resonance No Hill for a Climber (2024) Prog albums Testimony (2003) One (2004) ? DUTCH PROG ROCK GROUP DILEMMA RELEASE NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO “THUNDER” FROM FORTHCOMING THIRD ALBUM ‘THE PURPOSE PARADOX': ZOOM EXCLUSIVE WITH DRUMMER COLLIN LEIJENAAR ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS LIVE FROM THE NETHERLANDS. Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. BIO: At the end of this summer, on September 20, modern progressive rock band DILEMMA presents its third full length album, ‘The Purpose Paradox'. This concept album, spanning over 60 minutes, will be released on CD, double LP and via all streaming platforms, and distributed internationally by Butler Records, a division of V2 Records. It features 9 brand new tracks ranging in length from 4 to nearly 16 minutes. The sound showcases a broader side of DILEMMA — louder, faster, more technical, more progressive. With new frontman Jermain van der Bogt (Wudstik), the vocals have become rawer and more varied. Almost six years after the previous record ‘Random Acts of Liberation' the band sounds reborn. Like its predecessor, ‘The Purpose Paradox' was produced by drummer Collin Leijenaar, who, together with the famed music wizard Rich Mouser (The Mouse House, LA), was also responsible for the mix and mastering. Thanks to their unmatched ears, the result is an audio experience that DILEMMA has worked on with great pride over the past years. Collin made a name in the progressive rock scene by becoming the drummer, bandleader and tour manager in the European live band of Neal Morse (Transatlantic/Flying Colors) where he subbed for Mike Portnoy (Transatlantic/Flying Colors/ex-Dream Theater). But he is not only a musician but also a successful entrepreneur. His main company is Novae (NO VEE) Popschool, a modern music school which is operating in The Netherlands. To date his music school has grown into an organization with over 500+ students and a team of 35 teachers, staff members and volunteers and has several locations across cities in The Netherlands. PLEASE WELCOME THE DRUMMER/PRODUCER/ENGINEER/ FOR DUTCH PROGRESSIVE ROCK BAND DILEMMA COLLIN LEIJENAAR TO INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS… PREORDER THE PURPOSE PARADOX BY DILEMMA "The Purpose Paradox" is our third studio album, and it's our most ambitious work yet. There are few names as big as that of Neal Morse in the world of progressive rock. Among the many projects he's participated in over the past two, the trio of D'Virgilio, Morse and Jennings is the most unique in that it takes him out of his established genre and allows him to make folk-tinged rock in the vein of Crosby, Stills and Nash.He was kind enough to chat with me about their upcoming second album, Sophomore, due out November 10.
I'm delighted to bring you this interview with Spock's Beard and Pattern-Seeking Animals bassist Dave Meros. Dave was kind enough to spend some time telling me about the upcoming Pattern-Seeking Animals album Spooky Action at a Distance, along with the upcoming 20th-anniversary release of Spock's Beard's Feel Euphoria album on vinyl. He also spoke about the making of that Spock's record and that period in the band's history when it transitioned from Neal Morse to Nick D'Virgilio as lead singer. Dave also dove into his musical background, playing Snow live in its entirety at MorseFest, and many other topics. Here's an interview I've been wanting to do for a long time! My guest is the legendary Neal Morse, founder of Spock's Beard and currently a solo artist, a member of The Neal Morse Band, Flying Colors, Transatlantic, and D'Virgilio, Morse & Jennings. I spoke with Neal about many topics, including his two upcoming releases, An Evening of Innocence & Danger: Live in Hamburg by The Neal Morse Band, and a new solo prog rock concept album, The Dreamer - Joseph Part One. We covered a variety of subjects and Neal was gracious with his time. To find out more about these two releases and Neal's work in general, check out www.nealmorse.com. John Young From Lifesigns - The Now Spinning Magazine Podcast On this episode I am delighted to be joined by John Young from PROG Rock band Lifesigns John is celebrated musician known for his incredible versatility and contributions to the progressive rock scene. He's a songwriter, a keyboardist, a vocalist, and a composer who has worked with a diverse range of artists, from Steeleye Span to Bon Jovi. Lifesigns is a fantastic band band who I would describe as English Pastoral Prog, for those of you new to the band who are looking for a reference point I would say if you are a fan of Early Genesis, Camel, Flying Colors, Transatlantic, Neal Morse, The Tangent you would be pretty close! Lifesigns, debut album made waves in 2013, even making it to the UK top 100 album chart. The band began touring in 2014, with Jon Poole stepping in for Nick Beggs, and Niko Tsonev joining the lineup. Their performances at major festivals and events, including Cruise To The Edge and Night of the Prog, were notable highlights. The band released a live DVD and double audio CD, Live In London, recorded at Under The Bridge at Chelsea Football Club. Their second album, Cardington, launched in 2017, was a crowd-funded success, featuring guest appearances from renowned artists and reaching the top ten in the Amazon national chart. Lifesigns continued to tour and perform live, releasing the single Impossible in 2020, which introduced them to a broader audience. The band underwent a lineup change with the departure of Frosty and the arrival of Zoltán Csörsz in 2020. Despite recording their album Altitude remotely, the band's synergy was palpable, leading to a successful live performance on Cruise To The Edge in 2022. Their summer 2022 tour resulted in a double live album, to be released in July, with a blu-ray to follow. The band are about to embark on a European Tour and then start writing and recording their fourth studio album. For more details on Lifesigns please visit their website Phil Aston | Now Spinning Magazine

I jumped at the chance to talk to one of my favorite drummers for this episode. I've been following Mike Portnoy's career for 20-odd years and he joins me this week to discuss the new album, III, by The Winery Dogs. This is a brilliant collection of technical blues-based rock featuring Portnoy, the incomparable Richie Kotzen, and bass legend Billy Sheehan. In addition to discussing the making of this Winery Dogs record, Mike talked about his musical beginnings, his musical chemistry with Neal Morse, why it's difficult for young bands to make a living as musicians, and more. Find out more about The Winery Dogs and their current worldwide tour at www.thewinerydogs.com. We finally scale the misty mountain of PROG ROCK on the True Tunes Podcast - with none other than the venerable Neal Morse as our guide! As a founding member of Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, Flying Colors, and his own Neal Morse Band, he has been setting the standard in modern prog rock for decades. He has also developed his own streaming app to deliver his entire catalog (over 80 albums!) and curates his own Morsefest - an annual gathering of progressive rock fans from around the world. His personal and musical journey is as inspiring as his epic music. We also ponder the backlash "prog" received in the punk / new wave movement of the 70s and what complex, intricate art might offer us as we strive to become deeper thinkers, better discerners, and more imaginative humans. Break out the capes! If you would like to support the show, please consider joining our Patreon community or dropping us a one-time tip and check out our NEW MERCH! It's EPISODE 77 OF FRIENDS AND RIVALS and we are ALL winners! I heard that once from a guy that finished behind me in a 5 mile race and I tend to agree with him. But in this episode, we talk about REAL winners! Who REALLY won the NHL awards, who REALLY predicted Shesterkin winning the Vezina, who is REALLY going to win the Stanley Cup, and who REALLY are our top 5 bands? It's NOT DEBATABLE! Have you ever heard someone butcher the lyrics to timeless songs? We got that too! And the REAL lesson that we learn today is best summed up by the immortal lyrics of Neal Morse from the song So Many Roads; "As I look to the grand horizon, gazing out at the auburn sky, there's..." ................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Wait, how the hell did they manage to mute me when I'm doing the episode write up??? Only on FRIENDS AND RIVALS EPISODE 77!
Ahoy listeners! This week strap in for a 4-hour tour to the bottom of the sea of completely self-indulgent noodling… nah, just kidding! We have raided the Prog Rock crypt, yet we've prepared a bite-size slab of the genre that pushes the boundaries of rock music with a diverse mix of, well… everything! Kevin's prog-rock cruise that was postponed in 2020 is finally setting sail this week, so we thought we'd feature several of the artists that will be featured on the ship. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Prog rock in the 60s and 70s initially had mostly classical music and jazz influences, but over the last 40-years, it has come to include other fusions of music styles including metal, punk, funk, folk, and electronic. From Zappa and Sgt. Pepper to today's Djent and Post-Prog movements… This is Prog Rock! Get yer nerd on!Songs this week include:Riverside – “Rainbow Box” from Rapid Eye Movement (2007)Transatlantic – “Rainbow Sky” from The Absolute Universe: Forevermore (2021)Wishbone Ash – “The King Will Come” from Argus (1972) District 97 – “Stay For The Ending” from Many New Things (2022)Pain Of Salvation – “Angel Of Broken Things” from In The Passing Light Of Day (2017)Marillion – “Murder Machines” from An Hour Before It's Dark (2022)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Ross Jennings is seemingly everywhere these days, stretching his own boundaries into new projects outside of Haken. Most notable of those projects would be his solo debut, "A Shadow of My Future Self" and the soon to be released "Troika", which is his debut with prog legends Nick D'Virgilio and Neal Morse. The sky is the limit and Ross' talents are in high demand. This is my conversation with him about all the many projects and successes he's been having over the past year, as well as what the upcoming year holds for him. In this episode, Neal Morse talks to prog legend Steve Hackett about life as a gigging musician, Prog Cruises and London in the 1960s! Audio version available on iTunes, Spotify and all major podcast networks. www.radiantrecords.com
Randy George is a terrific multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. He may be best-known as the bassist in progressive rock supergroup The Neal Morse Band, but he's done a lot of other things. I spoke to Randy about he and his wife Pamela's Sweet Invention project, playing live during the pandemic, his christian prog rock band Ajalon (and whether we'll see another album from that band), meeting and recording with Neal Morse, the early sessions for the forthcoming fourth Neal Morse Band album, and a lot more. Check out Sweet Invention and Randy's solo works on Spotify and Neal Morse's Waterfall streaming app. You can also listen to select Neal Morse solo (with Randy on bass) and Neal Morse Band music on public streaming or all of it on the Waterfall app with a paid subscription.
