It is within each of us.' -Black ElkWe all have an often underused and therefore latent power of concentration. It is like the aperture of a camera which controls how much light comes through the lens. When it is smaller, it yields marvelous depth of field but a blurring of the periphery.Similarly, the light of conscious attention can be directed like a laser to penetrate the phenomenal world to reveal deeper insights and master an aspect of life.Ordinarily, our understanding and attentional interests are coming from the environment and outer conditioning with the illusion of one's willful direction, just as the tides appear to be the work of the ocean and not the invisible gravity of the moon.Concentration also represents the sixth limb in the philosophy of yoga. Dharana is the Sanskrit word with its root "dhar" meaning "to hold." But this is not the same as meditation, which in some ways is the opposite, like the large aperture full of light due to having no specific focus. This episode explores various creative and contemplative paths to concentration, it's material and spiritual benefits as well as it's relationship to meditation and other limbs of yoga.(original artwork on episode website and music "Eight Hours" by Bing Satellites)

The supply of available homes is historically low. Land is expensive, material costs are high, and the market conditions have a particularly dramatic impact on smaller homes less than 1,800 square feet. However, modern manufacturing techniques have shown the potential to cut costs and build times significantly. While the world's largest 3D printer is quicklybuilding modest homes layer by layer in Maine, modern offsite manufacturing techniques are making it possible for "stick-built homes" to be made more sustainably and efficiently.Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.

Ep. 210: Bruce Bennett on Eight Hours of Terror, Ambush at Tomahawk Gap, Yield to the Night, Nuke Films, and more Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw. I'm your host, Nicolas Rapold. It's that most wonderful time: writer and “recovering film critic” Bruce Bennett returns to the podcast for another absolutely enjoyable discussion of recent viewing. As always it's hard to pigeonhole the selection but broadly speaking we mine the 1950s—from Japan to England to the U.S.—for unsung brilliance by known and under-known auteurs. Films include: Eight Hours of Terror (Seijun Suzuki), Ambush at Tomahawk Gap (Fred Sears), Yield to the Night (J. Lee Thompson), Ladybird Ladybird (Frank and Eleanor Perry), Locked In (David C. Snyder), and much more. Please support the production of this podcast by signing up at: rapold.substack.com Photo by Steve Snodgrass

Summary: Is your environment noisy and distracting when you're trying to get work done? Are you working 12 straight hours with no breaks for nourishing food and hydration? These things might be directly impacting your ability to focus. In today's episode, we'll be talking about why focus is not a skill and rather how it's a condition of the brain. We'll discuss the three things that impact your ability to focus. When we can understand that focus is a condition of the brain (it is a brain space we can be in), then we can control the factors that might influence us or help us click into that brain space. Caveat: I am not an expert on ADHD, and I do not discuss ADHD in my content. If you have ADHD, though it might still apply to you, it also might work a little differently for you. Picture yourself lying next to a campfire. Crickets chirp as night falls. The fire crackles and pops. Relax and close your eyes. Let the sounds of the campfire pull away your anxiety. Focus on the soothing sound of nature. Your heart rate slows. Everything is calm and serene. Why I made this soundscape: I suppose my favorite memory of a campfire is when we celebrated Guy Fawkes Night by building a large bonfire. We were in western England near the welsh border. And we were having a bit of a fancy dress party with finger food and cider. Me and the other boys were asked to shoot off a box of fireworks. By that point in the evening we were all a bit tipsy. But somehow we managed to give the kids a good show. When we were done I grabbed the empty box. For some reason I was sure there were no more projectiles in it. I threw the box on the fire. As I marched away fireworks started shooting out of the bonfire. We all ran and dove on to the ground. This Crackling Campfire Soundscape is a lot more soothing than that night. I hope by listening to it you find happiness and calmness.
It's a special episode as I made it out to Florida for Labor Day. Our first in-person recording in a while and it got weird. We talk about The Outer Worlds, No Man's Sky, and Cooking Simulator. BMW Microtransations and a surprisingly long rant about subscriptions.
Picture yourself standing in the rain. The water droplets run down your face. Relax and close your eyes. Let the sounds of the rain pull away your anxiety. Focus on the sound, sometimes louder, sometimes softer. Your heart rate slows. Everything is calm and serene. Why I made this podcast: It's rainy season again. The daily deluge cools everything off here in San Miguel. Around this time of year I'm always reminded of my first few months in town. We went to a taco cart and ordered up some gringas de pastor. The rain started. Our backs began to get soaked. Soon our shoes were filled with rain water. But it didn't matter. As long as we stayed under the awning our tacos couldn't get wet. I hope by listening to it you find happiness and calmness. Facebook Page (leave your ideas, thoughts, and comments here): https://www.facebook.com/Relaxing-Nature-Sounds-106801641817461
Picture yourself standing on a rocky cliff. The lighthouse's search light stares out at the sea. A light rain drizzles. Relax and close your eyes. Let the sounds of the waves pull away your anxiety. Focus on the ocean. Your heart rate slows. Everything is calm and serene. Why I made this soundscape On the back wall, above my bed, are two porthole windows. The light from the street shines through them. I often lie in bed looking at them. They remind me of a lighthouse. A beacon in the fog searching for me. A light trying to bringing me safety home. My guest is a regular on the show, critic Beatrice Loayza (The New York Times, Reverse Shot, A.V. Club). Beatrice's viewing leads us to two dramas with British star Dirk Bogarde and two comedies by the great Albert Brooks. We also take the measure of studio blockbuster filmmaking from recent months, including Godzilla vs. Kong and Nobody.
