Donald Trump's illegal deportations are running into more trouble. A federal judge just declared there's probable cause to find the administration in criminal contempt over the removal of Venezuelans to El Salvador. Meanwhile, a Democratic Senator went to El Salvador to check on Kilmar Abrego Garcia and got a shocking response. And a new polling analysis has a warning for Trump: On immigration, he's significantly weaker than he appears. We think all this has the makings of a fiasco for Trump: He is heading toward defying the courts on this issue, in a way that could provoke a large backlash. We talked to New Republic staff writer Melissa Gira Grant, author of a good piece on Trump's use of spectacle on immigration. She deciphers the new ruling, why it's pushing us toward a crisis, and how Democrats can try to make it all backfire on Trump. Looking for More from the DSR Network? Hi listeners — Beatrice and Artie are currently on parental leave. (We were planning to be able to telegraph the announcement more this week, but "baby death panel" had other plans, and came early!). While we're away, we'll still have episodes in the feed, like today's episode; a mix of some old favorites we haven't revisited in a while and some unlocks. We'll be back as soon as it's safe and reasonable for us to do so, because with everything going on right now we want to make sure we're here for everyone. We also want to thank each and every one of you, because without support from our patrons it wouldn't be possible for us to take this kind of time. So if you can, now is a great time to support the show at patreon.com/deathpanelpod — either by becoming a patron or increasing your membership. This episode was originally released for Death Panel patrons November 27th, 2023. Original episode description: Beatrice and Jules speak with Melissa Gira Grant about the history of the Lavender Scare, the anti-gay campaign that overlapped and ran in parallel with the Red Scare, how it shaped the politics of gender and sexuality today, and whether we're experiencing a new Lavender Scare today or if instead the Lavender Scare never ended. Beatrice and Jules speak with Melissa Gira Grant about the Trump administration's anti-trans executive orders in the context of their broader attack on “wokeness” and DEI. We discuss what the broader impact of these orders could be, what elements are a retread of longstanding rightwing attacks on trans life, and what parts of them seem like a new and evolved form of attack. The New Abnormal hosts Andy Levy and Danielle Moodie look back on Donald's Trump's inauguration and the long list of executive orders he signed hours later. Then, Melissa Gira Grant, journalist, author, and senior editor at The New Republic, joins us to discuss the Laken Riley Act, a harsh immigration bill that could jail undocumented immigrants for minor arrests, even without charges. A vile quote from J.D. Vance just surfaced in which he described Kamala Harris and other Democratic leaders as “childless cat ladies,” and spun out a whole theory based on this absurdity. Then Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg sharply dressed down Vance for poking his nose into other people's family decisions. With this response, Buttigieg showed that Vance has invited a much larger national conversation—one that won't help Vance and Donald Trump. We talked to Melissa Gira Grant, a staff writer at The New Republic who closely tracks Vance's ideas, for help in illuminating what this saga tells us about the New Right's tortured views on gender, natalism and nationalism. Part 1:We talk with Melissa Gira Grant about the strict anti-abortion laws passed in Texas. These are aimed at controlling women, even paying bounties to anyone, including people outside Texas, who can accuse a woman of having, or even seeking an abortion. The goal is to intimidate women and those who help them. It givers abusers yet another method to intimidate and injure women. Part 2:We talk with Predro DiNezio, Associate Prof. of Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences. We discuss the role of El Nino, and La Nina in the formation of hurricanes, and the likelihood of the increase in the number and power of hurricanes. Combined with higher sea levels already in place, the intensity and effects of storms and storm surges are likely to be greater than ever before. What should we be prepared for? This week, The New Abnormalintroduces you to a relatively new face in the pantheon of Trumpworld toadies:Steven Cheung, Trump's principal spokesperson and de facto enforcer. Plus, a conversation with New Republic staff writer Melissa Gira Grant about a largely forgotten 1873 law, called the Comstock Act, that could be used to outlaw virtually all abortions across America. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Michelle Eisen, organizing member of Starbucks Workers United (SWU), to discuss the breaking news that Starbucks may be willing to return to the negotiating table with SWU. Then, Sam is joined by Melissa Gira Grant, staff writer at the New Republic, to discuss her recent reporting on Project 2025. First, Sam runs through updates on the tremendous showing of the “Uncommitted” vote in Michigan's Democratic Primary, an imminent government shutdown, US' commitment to begin to start working on trying to get Israel compliant with international law soon maybe, IVF legislation, UAW expansion, Arizona fascism, anti-trust action, the impotency of the New York Democratic machine, climate change, and Nepo babies Hunter Biden and Lara Trump, before diving into CNN's coverage of Michigan's “Uncommitted” vote, attempting to downplay and obscure the political movement behind it. SWU's Michelle Eisen then joins, reflecting on the major developments in their unionization drive in the 11 months since her last MR appearance, including Starbucks' contract stonewalling and active discrimination against union stores and workers. Next, Eisen looks to the role of Starbucks' recent trademark lawsuit and the union's countersuit in pushing Starbucks to come back to the table with the union and attempt to prove good faith after years of union-busting, and granting backpay and other benefits provided to the union. Wrapping up, Michelle and Sam tackle the central role workers will play in these negotiations moving forward, and where the timeline for the reparations currently stands. After briefly touching on Mitch McConnell's announced resignation from Senate leadership, Sam is joined by Melissa Gira Grant who jumps right into what “Project 2025” is, an agenda blueprint provided by the far-right Heritage Foundation and supported by some hundred other groups that outlines their plan for a fascist transition in the case of a GOP victory in 2024. After briefly stepping back to look and where this project came from, and the particular role that Donald Trump plays in it, Grant walks Sam through the specifics of the project, centering around this idea of enshrining the family (more specifically the heterosexual nuclear family) at the core of policies to undermine same-sex marriage, trans rights, the DOE, social programs writ large, and generally gut the 14th amendment's right to privacy when it comes to sexual and gender identity. After briefly touching on the role of the 1873 Comstock Act as central to the Heritage Foundation's plan, Grant tackles Project 2025's major goals of removing all mention of reproductive rights and abortion from US government policy, and punishing any governmental or public organizations that do not comply with their myriad fascist changes. Wrapping up, Melissa and Sam discuss the ideological focus of the project's recruitment methods, and why their numbers are falling well short of their vision as the election draws closer. And in the Fun Half: Sam talks with Nick from Michigan and Matt from Ann Arbor, respectively, about the “Uncommitted” vote in yesterday's primary, then Dave Rubin calls in to attempt to hash things out with Sam as they tackle the necessity of wealth inequality and the attack on IVF before things take a turn for the personal. The MR Team also covers the fallout of James Comer's central witness to the Biden Impeachment getting exposed as a Russian asset, Hemet from Canada calls in to touch on Canada's growing xenophobia, and Joe Rogan and Kid Rock go back and forth between whether genocide is productive or not, while Dr. Phill and Rogan come to agreement on the wonders of wealth inequality, plus, your calls and IMs! This week on CounterSpin: “Abortion Politics Reveal Concerns” was the headline one paper gave a recent Associated Press story, language so bland it almost discourages reading the piece, which reports how right-wing politicians and anti-abortion activists are seeking to undermine or undo democratic processes when those processes accurately reflect the public desire to protect reproductive rights. Methods include “challenging election results, refusing to bring state laws into line with voter-backed changes, moving to strip state courts of their power to consider abortion-related laws, and challenging the citizen-led ballot initiative process itself.” So there is a way to cover abortion access as a political issue without reducing it to one. But too many outlets seem to have trouble shaking the framing of abortion as a “controversy,” or as posing problems for this or that politician, rather than presenting it as a matter of basic human rights that majorities in this country have long supported, and centering in their coverage the people who are being affected by its creeping criminalization. Melissa Gira Grant is a staff writer at the New Republic, and the author of Playing the Whore: The Work of Sex Work and of the forthcoming A Woman Is Against the Law: Sex, Race and the Limits of Justice in America. She's been reporting on abortion for years, and joins us this week to talk about it. First, Janine Jackson takes a quick look at recent press coverage of marriage and ideology. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit davidlat.substack.comLast month, in honor of LGBTQ Pride Month, I interviewed Alejandra Caraballo, a leading advocate for transgender rights. After that episode, I heard from listeners who asked me to interview someone on the other side. As a passionate advocate of free speech and viewpoint diversity, I agreed that it would be appropriate to do so.My latest podcast guest is Kristen Waggoner, chief executive officer and general counsel of Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which describes itself as “one of the leading Christian law firms committed to protecting religious freedom, free speech, marriage and family, parental rights, and the sanctity of life.” ADF's opposition to same-sex marriage, transgender rights, and abortion rights has made it a reviled organization on the legal left.Although Kristen isn't popular among progressives, there's no disputing that she is an influential and newsworthy attorney. For better or worse, ADF has won 15 cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, and three of them were argued personally by Waggoner—including 303 Creative v. Elenis, one of the biggest cases of the just-completed Term. Writing for the six conservatives, Justice Gorsuch held that the First Amendment protects Kristen's client, website designer Lorie Smith, from being required under Colorado's public-accommodations law to make websites for same-sex weddings, which she opposes on religious grounds. In our interview, I posed tough but respectful questions to Kristen about the mission and legal work of ADF, including its designation as a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center; her recent win in 303 Creative, including an allegation that ADF fabricated one piece of evidence (the “Stewart and Mike” controversy); the next major goal of the conservative legal movement, in the wake of wins like 303 Creative and Dobbs; and her views on “legislating morality” or enshrining Christian views into law (where her comments might surprise you). Despite our many differences—e.g., she opposes same-sex marriage, and I'm in one—I enjoyed and learned a great deal from our conversation, and I'm grateful for her time, insight, and willingness to engage.Show Notes:* Kristen Waggoner bio, Alliance Defending Freedom* Inside the Christian legal powerhouse that keeps winning at the Supreme Court, by Jessica Contrera for the Washington Post* Meet the Lawyer Who'll Argue at Supreme Court for Christian Baker's Right to Free Speech, by Ken McIntyre for the Daily Signal* The Supreme Court Doesn't Care That the Gay Wedding Website Case Is Based on Fiction, by Melissa Gira Grant for the New RepublicPrefer reading to listening? A controversial U.S. Supreme Court term ends with a trifecta of right-leaning rulings, including a swipe at LGBTQ+ rights based on free speech. Equality California's Jorge Reyes Salinas, Slate columnist Matthew Stone, Guardian columnist Moira Donegan, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, UC Berkeley law professor Dan Farmer and New Republic reporter Melissa Gira Grant comment (reported by Christina Aanestad of KPFA News and Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!). The Los Angeles School Board's lesbian President Jackie Goldberg reads a story to educate the book-burners. And in NewsWrap: Nepal's top court orders the government to register same-gender marriages, over a hundred Pride activists are arrested in Turkey, U.S. federal judges slam Tennessee and Kentucky pediatric trans care bans, Kansas to reverse gender identity changes transgender people have made to their state documents, Hamburger Mary's serves a drag ban loss to Florida's DeSantis, and more international LGBTQ news reported this week by Marcos Najera and Nico Raquel (produced by Brian DeShazor). “The stakes right now are really high when it comes to queer and trans life. I can say in terms of my own lifetime, I haven't felt like it has been this dangerous ever,” says journalist Melissa Gira Grant. In this episode, Kelly talks with Gira Grant about right-wing attacks on trans people, Republican school board takeovers, and how the right's “groomer” discourse has expanded to include queer people, drag performers, and public school teachers. On today's Deep Dive, Melissa and Dorian take an in-depth look at sex work and how it's been criminalized in the United States, starting off with journalist and former sex worker Melissa Gira Grant, who discusses the history of criminalizing sex work in the U.S. Then Cecilia Gentili, principal consultant and founder of Trans Equity Consulting, and LaLa B. Holston-Zannell, trans justice campaign manager in the National Advocacy Department at the ACLU, explain the idea of sex work as work and why some advocates are calling for full decriminalization. Yasmin Vafa, executive director of Rights 4 Girls, discusses concerns that sex work increases opportunities for sex trafficking, particularly the trafficking of children. RJ Thompson, managing director of the Sex Workers Project at the Urban Justice Center, helps break down some of the stigma surrounding sex work as well as how and why male sex workers are often left out of conversations around sex work. And finally Elexus Jionde, author, content creator and founder of Intelexual Media, explores how technology, digital communication and the “realites” of the virtual world will continue to shape the future of sex work. This collection of narrative essays by sex workers presents a crystal-clear rejoinder: there's never been a better time to fight for justice. Responding to the resurgence of the #MeToo movement in 2017, sex workers from across the industry--hookers and prostitutes, strippers and dancers, porn stars, cam models, Dommes and subs alike--complicate narratives of sexual harassment and violence, and expand conversations often limited to normative workplaces. Writing across topics such as homelessness, motherhood, and toxic masculinity, We Too: Essays on Sex Work and Survival (Feminist Press, 2021) gives voice to the fight for agency and accountability across sex industries. With contributions by leading voices in the movement such as Melissa Gira Grant, Ceyenne Doroshow, Audacia Ray, femi babylon, April Flores, and Yin Q, this anthology explores sex work as work, and sex workers as laboring subjects in need of respect--not rescue. A portion of this book's net proceeds will be donated to SWOP Behind Bars (SBB). Rachel Stuart is a sex work researcher whose primary interest is the lived experiences of sex workers.
Melissa Gira Grant and Chardine Taylor Stone join PTO to discuss police and male violence and the murder of Sarah Everard. We talked about the importance of not seeing Wayne Couzen's role as a police officer as merely incidental to the murder of Everard and we also talked about why carceral feminist approaches that seek to combat male violence through the police and the courts are doomed to fail. We also talked about the social media reaction to the initial vigil for Sarah Everard on Clapham common and how the struggle against police violence and violence against women in general requires the building of a mass movement of collective struggle that cuts across different identities.

"At the end of the day, what this is about is preserving white male power. If the consequence of going back on Pornhub is reducing the incomes of people who were already marginalized, who were already lower to middle income, who were already blocked from other forms of work because they are trans, because they are undocumented, because of disability, then it isn’t an unintended consequence. It is just part of how this thing goes." Melissa Gira Grant We talk to Melissa Gira Grant about Nicholas Kristof’s Op/Ed in the New York Times that led to Visa/Mastercard pulling out of Pornhub. We discuss trafficking narratives, anti-porn feminism, the business model of Pornhub, sex workers issues with payment processors, and more. Melissa Gira Grant is a staff writer at The New Republic and the author of Playing the Whore: The Work of Sex Work.
Pornhub, the Montreal-based streaming giant, is in trouble. They’ve dumped millions of videos from their platform, Visa and Mastercard have cut ties with the company, and they’re facing questions from Canadian MPs. This all happened after a recent New York Times article which exposed the platform’s insidious problem of hosting videos of rape, child abuse and sex trafficking — sometimes even after victims asked for the videos to be taken down. But porn performers say that while they also want to fight abuse and non-consensual content on the platform, they’re now becoming collateral damage in the rush to tackle this serious issue — and that could affect their livelihoods and their safety. Today, we’re speaking to Melissa Gira Grant, a staff writer at The New Republic and the author of Playing the Whore: The Work of Sex Work, about the changes shaking one of the world’s biggest porn sites, and why sex workers say they need to be included in the conversation.
Why is the period between Election Day and inauguration so long in the United States? What kind of trouble have past outgoing presidents made during the interregnum? And in the event Joe Biden wins, how can we expect Donald Trump to behave? On Episode 15 of The Politics of Everything, hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene interview six guests about the presidential transition and how we might prepare for it: Michael Kazin, a professor at Georgetown University and co-editor of Dissent; Jason Linkins, a deputy editor at The New Republic; TNR staff writers Matt Ford, Melissa Gira Grant, and Libby Watson; and longtime campaign reporter and TNR staff writer Walter Shapiro. * On this episode, one of our guests suggested that Congress could change the date of the presidential inauguration if it wanted to. That’s true of Election Day, but changing the date of the inauguration would require a constitutional amendment. We regret the error. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
As we celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment this month, it’s tempting to assume that women’s suffrage is complete. Yet millions of women—because they are incarcerated or on parole, because their legal name doesn’t match certain documents, because the polls are open only during the hours they are at jobs or caring for their families—still don’t have the franchise, either in effect or by law. On Episode 13 of The Politics of Everything, hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene talk Melissa Gira Grant, a staff writer at The New Republic, about who remains locked out of the vote, why they’ve been excluded, and what the work of suffrage looks like today. Later in the episode, Alex Shephard explores how Trump is changing the books we buy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Two dozen women have accused Donald Trump of sexual misconduct, harassment and assault, including rape. Trump has responded by denigrating, mocking and attacking his accusers. Eight women have made allegations of misconduct against Biden and one of them has accused him of sexual assault. Biden, who is running on a campaign to restore dignity and honesty to the White House, emphatically denies he assaulted his former staffer Tara Reade and has sought to explain away his conduct toward his other accusers by portraying his unwanted touching as his way of being affectionate. The New Republic’s Melissa Gira Grant discusses Reade’s allegations, Biden’s response and the broader discourse in the media and Democratic Party surrounding the actions of the presumptive nominee toward women. And former Nevada lawmaker Lucy Flores says Joe Biden touched her inappropriately, kissed her head and sniffed her hair when he was campaigning for her. She says she didn’t report it to the Obama White House at the time for fear of retaliation or rejection, but when Biden began to run for president she felt an obligation to speak out. Flores was soon followed by seven other women sharing similar stories. She discusses her experience with Biden, what it means that the Democratic party is standing by him and the impact of a choice between Trump and Biden.
Melissa, the first guest for our book club, reads from her still-very-relevant book, touching on the implications of banning sex workers from social media, police violence, and what it means to have sex work become an electoral issue. Welcome to our first ep of 2019! We're starting off by taking some time to educate ourselves on something that none of the On the Dresser hosts have lived experience with and that is asexuality. Enter Taryn. She's a blogger and educator. Her site www.AceInTheHole.com is a place where she reviews sex toys and chronicles her journey as an asexual person. She chats with Vanessa about representation and discovery and gives us helps us better understand our friends on the Asexual and Aromantic spectrum. Afterward, Danny Cruz and Lauren Kiley chat about how to best support a loved one who may trust you enough to "come out" to you. We chat in the context of asexuality, but it really applies across the TLBGQIA spectrum. Plus! Vanessa and Danny come to you from the American Bar Association (ABA) Mid Year meeting in Las Vegas! Our own Vanessa Carlisle co-wrote a guide with friend of the show Kori Cordero for writing legislation that bans gay conversion therapy for minors. Currently, only 15 states in the US ban the practice. The ABA's Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) adopted a resolution urging all federal, state, local, territorial and tribal governments to enact laws that prohibit state-licensed professionals from using conversion therapy on minors. You can find the resolution, the guide and more information at: https://www.americanbar.org/groups/diversity/sexual_orientation/ While we enjoyed the scenery in Vegas, it was hard not to feel like we were being watched. That's because that we woke up to the news from journalist and author Melissa Gira Grant that Marriott Hotels were training their staff to “identify trafficking victims” by behavior like turning down housekeeping or traveling with too little luggage! All in the name of human trafficking (of course) THREAD: https://twitter.com/melissagira/status/1089170470895783938 Later that week, Elizabeth Nolan Brown who is an associate editor at Reason Magazine wrote a piece detailing Marriott's increased surveilling of women in their hotels and how it ties into the government's expansion of "see something, say something" targeting women and sex workers. Are You a Woman Traveling Alone? Marriott Might Be Watching You. https://reason.com/archives/2019/02/05/hotel-surveillance-state-sex-trafficking If that didn't feel like enough eyes on us, we heard from frequent business traveller Clementine Crawford who wrote an essay about her experience being a single woman at a New York City Restaurant. At one of her regular dining spots when she travels in from London, she was surprised to find that she was no longer allowed to sit at the bar! "Company policy." "The Night I Was Mistaken for a Call Girl" https://drugstoreculture.com/the-night-i-was-mistaken-for-a-call-girl/ Finally (and probably most grossly), we'll chat about a bill that was proposed in the Utah state legislature. HB 153 would amend provisions regarding the completion and amendment of a birth certificate in order to prohibit transgender citizens from being able to change the gender on their birth certificates. Luckily this bill was held and is effectively dead, but we'll talk about how these all these things fit the larger theme of policing sex, gender and bodies. All of it, On the Dresser! In this episode, Bethany interviews Molly Smith and Juno Mac, authors of Revolting Prostitutes, a rare example of a book about sex worker rights written by current sex workers. Episode 26 is a special episode, brought to you from Eyebeam in Brooklyn, NYC. We cover Hacking//Hustling: A Platform for Sex Workers in a Post SESTA World with a combination of interviews and captured audio. We discuss the need for a sex worker centered tech conferences with Ingrid Burrington, an Eyebeam art resident who helped to facilitate the event. We then move to footage of the sex worker panel that kicked off the event. We feature snippets of Tina Horn, Lorelei Lee, Danielle Blunt, and Melissa Gira Grant. We also talk to Brit Schulte, who curated the Whores Will Rise: Protest Art and Resistant Ephemera Against FOSTA/SESTA, the art exhibit running in conjunction with the event; and we talk to Joanna Gould and Sally Szwed, Eyebeam staff. Finally, we bring you three longer interviews. First, we talk to Sophie Searcy from t4tech, about digital hygiene; second, to sex worker Tourma, and her client Rick about their trip to the conference together; and, lastly, to Danielle Blunt and Melissa Gira Grant about their reflections on the conference as a whole.
The SESTA/FOSTA law purportedly aims to curb sex trafficking. But as my guest Melissa Gira Grant explains, it actually denies sex workers access to online platforms to more safely conduct their business. It received just two "no" votes in the Senate: from Rand Paul and Ron Wyden. It's a problem of hegemony: prohibition has long been plain common sense. So, it's our job to change that. The first step is to make it clear that there is dissent, and that prohibition is self-evidently neither good policy nor good politics. Live recording of The Dig coming up in New York City. Stopping the trafficking of exploited persons is something everyone agrees is important. But recent efforts by the federal government to exploit this good faith desire to protect the vulnerable by criminalizing consensual sex work––namely by passing of Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA)––has driven the business further underground, all while chilling speech and exposing sex workers to even greater harm. Our guest, senior reporter for The Appeal, Melissa Gira Grant.

This week on the VICE podcast Reihan Salam sits down with Melissa Gira Grant, an independent journalist who has been writing and reporting on the sex industry for the past ten years. Grant recently authored a book, Playing the Whore: The Work of Sex Work, in which she calls for an overhaul in the way we think about sex work. Today, she chats with us about the history, the myths, and the criticisms of the sex industry and shares her perspective on how sex work is primarily about economic activity, and those who perform sexual labor shouldn't be criminalized or treated any differently than any other laborers trying to survive in our treacherous economic system. This week, Belabored talks to Melissa Gira Grant, whose new book Playing the Whore: The Work of Sex Work dismantles the myths surrounding sex work and challenges us to think about sex work in the same framework in which we put other kinds of labor. At the heart is the question: should workers have to love their work in order to be able to demand rights and protections on the job?
