Dr Helen Fry has authored and edited over 25 books covering the social history of the Second World War, including British Intelligence and the secret war, espionage and spies, and MI9 escape and evasion. She is the foremost authority on the 'secret listeners' who worked at special eavesdropping sites operated by British Intelligence during WWII. Her groundbreaking research and extensive media coverage have shed light on one of the greatest intelligence deceptions of the war: the bugging of Hitler's generals at Trent Park in North London, and thousands of prisoners of war at Latimer House and Wilton Park in Buckinghamshire. Helen is the official biographer of MI6 spymaster, Colonel Thomas Joseph Kendrick. She has also extensively written about the 10,000 Germans who fought for Britain during WWII. Helen has appeared in a number of documentaries, including David Jason's Secret Service (Channel 5), Spying on Hitler's Army (Channel 4), and Secrets of the Spies (Britbox). She has covered the major D-Day commemorations in live BBC broadcasts from Normandy and is a recent recipient of the Lifetime Contribution Award for Jewish Military History and Education, awarded by The Jewish Military Association.Dr Helen Fry is guest number 388 on My Time Capsule and chats to Michael Fenton Stevens about the five things she'd like to put in a time capsule; four she'd like to preserve and one she'd like to bury and never have to think about again .For Helen Fry's books and everything else Helen, visit - www.helen-fry.comFollow Helen Fry on Twitter @DrHelenFry .Follow My Time Capsule on Twitter, Instagram & Facebook: @MyTCpod .Follow Michael Fenton Stevens on Twitter: @fentonstevens and Instagram @mikefentonstevens .Produced and edited by John Fenton-Stevens for Cast Off Productions .Music by Pass The Peas Music .Artwork by matthewboxall.com .This podcast is proud to be associated with the charity Viva! We are extraordinarily grateful that historian and biographer Dr. Helen Fry made time for us right as her latest book Women in Intelligence: The Hidden History of Two World Wars was released in the UK and is poised to launch in the United States.  This new book is filled with intrigue hidden in plain sight. Spies recruited at cafés, ordinary women bicycling around town passing along messages to help the Allies, secret codes knit into jumpers (that's the British English word for what we Americans call sweaters). Helen Fry has authored too many popular books to count. These include: The London Cage, The Walls Have Ears, MI9, Spymaster: The Man who Saved M16 and more than twenty books on intelligence, prisoners of war, and the social history of World War II. She appears regularly in media interviews and podcasts and has been involved in numerous documentaries. Here's the official, delicious description of Women in Intelligence: “In this major, panoramic history, Helen Fry looks at the rich and varied work women undertook as civilians and in uniform. From spies who worked for the Belgian network ‘La Dame Blanche', knitting coded messages into jumpers, to those who interpreted aerial images and even ran entire sections, Fry shows just how crucial women were in the intelligence mission.” Nigel West, author of Spies Who Changed History described Women in Intelligence as “A fascinating, minutely researched study of women in the espionage business.” And Clare Mulley, author of The Spy Who Loved, warns us: “Beware – this is a book full of danger and deception, sabotage and secret codes, and some brilliant, unstoppable women.  “This account is long overdue. Helen Fry redresses the relative neglect of the contribution of women as intelligence officer and agents during and between the two world wars, with gripping personal stories of bravery, grit and analytic brilliance.”—Sir David Omand GCB, former Director of GCHQ Helen Fry was raised in North Devon and went on to graduate from the University of Exeter with a degree and Ph.D. The focus of her (okay, we've counted now. It's ) 25 books has been the 10,000 Germans and Austrians who fought for Britain, and intelligence, espionage and prisoners of war. Her highly acclaimed book The Walls Have Ears: The Greatest Intelligence Operation of WWII was in the top 8 Daily Mail's Books of the Year in War, and has been optioned for film.  Contact Booked Up: You can email Jen & the Booked Up team at: BOOKEDUP@POLITICON.COM or by writing to:  BOOKED UP  P.O. School holidays often means board games. Especially in winter. I love a game of cards, or backgammon, but when someone in my family suggests a classic board game which I know could last hours – sometimes days - I slip off my chair under the table.OK – so that's what I think about doing in my head. Mostly, I reluctantly play.Monopoly is a favourite in our house, and I felt like a terrible mother this week when my daughter wanted to play and I couldn't bring myself to join her. Bless her grandmother for stepping up to the table and taking her on.I didn't always hate Monopoly. But after years of playing with my kids – a son who would strategically buy only between Mayfair and Regent Street, cover it in hotels and bankrupt you in one bad throw of the dice, or my daughter, who would buy wherever she landed then negotiate as only a child can to get the final property to make a monopoly – I'm kind of over the property market. Even if it is only a board game. But as I put my head in a book while the others played this week my father told me something about Monopoly which has made me like the game just a little more. Apologies if you've heard this story before, but it was news to me.During World War II, Monopoly was more than just a board game – it was a way of sending hidden escape kits to captured Allied service men in prison camps throughout Nazi-occupied Europe.John Waddington, who at the time manufactured the boards and players' tokens, worked alongside MI9, the secret government department responsible for helping prisoners of war and liaising with resistance movements in continental Europe. Waddington had mastered printing on silk – which is why Monopoly led the charge. It's hard to spoil a silk map, which were laminated within the board and sent by fake charities to the camps as part of humanitarian packages. There are stories of Monopoly sets sent out with tokens made of pure gold – to aid prisoners making their escapes. And when it was discovered German guards weren't searching the sets, real German currency was included in some of the packs of Monopoly banknotes.Waddington printed little clues on the game, so the military knew which game to send where. A full stop here or there, would determine whether the game was to be sent to Italy, Norway, Sweden, Germany, or Northern France. "Straight" boards were marked "Patent applied for" with a full stop. It's also thought the game tokens were used to hide compasses and even files. British historians think Monopoly boards could have helped thousands of captured soldiers escape from prison camps during the war.So next time you're looking for a story to distract your child when you've landed one of their properties, no doubt covered in intensive housing, this story may be helpful.Monopoly really was a ‘get out of jail free' card.

Alright, getting to squeeze one more in before we close out 2015.  What a year it been!  So much has happened.  I went to Brazil.  I watched one rocket blow up and another one land.  I listened to a ton of music and went to a lot of show.  Most importantly for me, I witnessed the miracle of child birth once again.  Let me tell you, three kids is no joke folks. But, getting to the matter at hand, what’s in store for the podcast today?  Well, you want to know what is going to form the backbone of the soundtrack for my New Years party?  No, not drum and bass though that will be playing in the side room.  It’s that latin thing that I just keep coming back to.  I don’t have a good name for it as it encompasses so many sounds but there are three labels that are the foundation for me.  First of course must be ZZK based in Buenos Aires  followed by Wonderwheel Recording and Dutty Artz both in Brooklyn, hence the podcast title.  These are by no means the only players however.  And equally important are the local latin dance parties bringing the sound to life by delivering to people on the dancefloor: Peligrosa (Austin), Subsuelo (LA), Club Zizek (Buenos Aires), Que Bajo (Brooklyn), Tormenta Tropica (SF), etc. This one has been in the works for a while and I'm so happy to finally get it out to you.  I always really like everything I play but this one is particularly special and I can’t think of a better way to close out 2015.Get involved.  Let me know what you think and what you're listening to.  Twitter: @actlistmusic, Facebook: www.facebook.com/activelistener, or email: aaron@activelistenerpodcast.comThanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,AaronTracklist (links to buy)1.Sanacion by Nicola Cruz on Prender el Alma2.Orinoco by El Buho & Barrio Lindo on History of Colour EP3.Jardines ft. During World War II, the British Secret Service found a surprising way to help Allies in Nazi prisoner-of-war camps: They used doctored Monopoly sets to smuggle in maps, files, compasses, and real money. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story behind this clever ploy, which may have helped thousands of prisoners escape from Nazi camps. We'll also hear listeners' thoughts on Jeremy Bentham's head, Victorian tattoos, and phone-book-destroying German pirates and puzzle over murderous cabbies and moviegoers. Sources for our feature on MI9's use of Monopoly sets to help Allied prisoners escape during World War II: Philip E. Orbanes, Monopoly: The World's Most Famous Game -- And How It Got That Way, 2006.
