In this episode of Hacking the Hustle, I sit down with Mark Gerson, entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist, and co-founder of GLG, Thuzio, United Hatzalah, and African Mission Healthcare. We talk about how he helped build one of the most influential expert networks in the world, why he believes Israel is a breeding ground for innovation, and what drives his deep commitment to medical missions in Africa. Mark shares his unique perspective on interfaith philanthropy, the power of Jewish values, and how business can be a vehicle for doing real, lasting good. This conversation made me think differently about success, service, and what it means to lead with purpose.
Even if navigating change sometimes feels like trying to herd cats, it's important to remember as Leslie Knope says ,"every obstacle is an opportunity to prove how awesome you are.” Feeling part of a community, as we know, is so vital for student and educator success - and given the stresses, trials, and victories that come with being in the field of education and leadership, change is going to happen. So, how do we maintain those relationships and not fall into a metaphorical pit as when change or transitions come our way? The question is as prevalent now as it was nearly 3 years ago. So before GLG takes a running leap and learns to fly towards what's ahead” let's reflect on “Network Connectivity Problems” - and what we can do to keep our connections “Leslie Knope & Ann Perkins” strong…

The Kumbaya-love-fest the GLG had on this past rerun of the Make it Work Mindset displays how the powers of a guild provide support and recognition during times of stress when performing at max capacity is a must– a common reality for all those in this education space. As we work our way towards our own “Auf wiedersehen” for our favorite education episodes, it's a chance to revisit and reflect upon this episode that reminds us all that even if the situations that had us “making it work” during the pandemic have changed immensely, we are STILL designers - and we are fierce.
Hello Listeners! In this episode, we had the opportunity to have a conversation with SEOI, RIINA, HWISEO, and YEL from K-Pop girl group H1-KEY H1-KEY is a K-pop girl group under GLG, composed of four talented members from South Korea: SEOI, RIINA, HWISEO, and YEL. Since its debut, H1-KEY has garnered significant recognition, ranking third in the “Girl Group Brand Reputation” in February 2023, just behind NewJeans and BLACKPINK. The group has also been gaining widespread attention, with many calling them the "miracle of small and medium-sized K-pop labels" due to their rising popularity. The group reached third place on QQ Music's Korean Chart, China's largest music streaming platform, and was ranked as the most popular K-pop album on NetEase Music in the first quarter of 2023. These milestones mark their “best record” to date, further solidifying their global presence and fanbase. On November 2024 H1-KEY is set to release the highly anticipated remix of their track "Re: Thinkin' About You". H1-KEY collaboration, Josh Cullen, the lead member of the Philippines' first idol group to chart on Billboard, lends his voice to the remix with a powerful rap verse. The lyrics serve as a response to the original track, with both Josh Cullen and H1-KEY reflecting on themes of emotional growth and mature breakup experiences, creating a unique dialogue within the song. Accompanying the release is an exclusive music video that offers a behind-the-scenes look at the recording process between H1-KEY and Josh Cullen. The video captures the creative chemistry between the two artists, offering fans an intimate glimpse into their collaboration and the emotions behind the remix. Hey everyone - Casey here!Since watching and falling in love with the original Star Wars trilogy as a child, I knew we'd eventually “jedi-mind trick” a way to discuss the Star Wars Universe as GLG. At the time of our recording, the teaching world had been rocked by the release of another podcast series on how that brain actually learns to read, and how schools and curriculum publishers for years may have got it wrong - and many children lacked the skills they need to operate in a highly literate world. The episode you are able to hear was released on November 24, around Thanksgiving of 2023, and was part of our three part series on The Science of Reading. Happy listening!

She is founder of the multi-location law firm, The Grigoropoulos Law Group. She is a corporate real estate broker for Property Shark Realty Inc., an investor, and CEO of IME Sharks Inc. She has appeared as a finance expert on Fox News, Yahoo! and more. Topics covered in the Episode: LadyShark book overview Step 1 being brave and having courage Step 5 confidence and what we wear Step 6 LadyShark organization Self-respect Step 8 what it means to be rich Here are three takeaways from the episode: 1. Naysayers can get in the way and keep us down and the key is to believe in yourself. Sometimes you surprise yourself. The sky is not the limit. 2. We do make assessments about what we wear and what others wear. It can reflect what we think about ourselves. We need people to believe we are capable. Naysayers are usually people not as successful as us and our cheerleaders usually are. 3. You'll find you need help so it's important to find mentors who know more than us. We need to own who you are, the good and the bad, and acknowledge how far we've come. Also important is to avoid comparing yourself to others, only compare yourself to where you want to be and where you are. Mentioned in the Episode: Chrissy Grigoropulos book: LadyShark: How to Become a Millionaire in Your 30s. https://www.amazon.com/ More About Chrissy: Chrissy founded her own law firm, GLG, while still in her 20s. Bonjour, GLG listeners! It might seem “rather odd” to compare math to Disney's iconic take on “Beauty and the Beast” but bear with us here - A bookish protagonist finds herself torn between two worlds - between the love she has grown into and those who have yet to see the value and beauty under what seems dark, confusing, and . . . requires attention to precision? Now you can see where we're going with this…and we've found a qualified expert to “be our guest” on this enchanted mathematical adventure. Join us!

One thing that's pretty clear about the GLG, especially if you've listened to our “Pop Culture Playground” mini episodes, is that we typically skew, as a guild, towards pop music. Much in the same way, in our journey as a podcast to capture what it's like to teach, learn, team, and lead in school systems during the early-mid 2020s, we realize our discussions have been tuned closely into the “United States K-12 Education” station.Up next, we're going to spin that dial…and consider the “Alternative” station. Where or how else can those with a curious mind, an empathetic heart, and a love for teaching and learning make a difference in education? “Stay Tuned” throughout this mini-series on “AlternativeEDU” with the GLG …starting with this very episode!
Show Notes: Dimitris Samouris discusses the development of a tool called Junior, an SaaS tool built on large language models and speech to text models. It leverages AI to help process primary research workstreams, particularly in the due diligence process, especially for primary interviews. How Junior Works - A SaaS Tool to Clean Transcripts Junior helps automate a significant portion of the administrative tasks associated with research execution, allowing users to focus more on the big picture answer rather than the execution side of things. The tool provides a highly accurate transcript of each call, including the name, segment, company, customer size, date and time of the interview, call status, and review status. The call tracker is a knowledge repository that displays the names, segments, job title, company, customer size, country, date and time of the interview, call status, and review status. The call screen is a customizable project management tool for running the call workstream. Junior has three parts: a call drawer, which has three parts: verbatim transcript, clean transcript, and audio file backup. The first step is to chunking the verbatim transcript into relevant question and answer pairs, then cleaning those pairs for colloquialisms and repetition interruptions. This process typically strips out about half of the text in the verbatim transcript, making it more digestible. The Benefits of Using Junior - Workflow Tools for Consultants Junior allows users to create a clean transcript of a call and then convert it into a call summary. The tool has two components: a stats box that extracts every numerical data point referenced in the call and stores it in one place for review after the call, and a set of key takeaways that are AI-generated summaries of the key points of the call. The tool leverages information from the beginning of a project, such as a scope document or interview guide, to help guide the summary. The tool also offers workflow tools specifically designed for the consulting industry to help get to the slide output faster. One of the main features is Ctrl. F. This feature helps users find relevant quotes and questions related to the topic, such as contract structure, pricing, implementation, and renewal processes. This feature is particularly useful for human consultants who may struggle to trace quotes due to sanitization or paraphrasing issues. An AI native spreadsheet table automates data input for questions that need to be tracked systematically across research or used in market models. It allows users to set up questions and track transcripts, with the source information attached for verification. The data is exportable into Excel for further analysis. Junior also has a chatbot that handles transcripts for consulting and investment research use cases. It produces structured answers with evidence attached to each argument, providing a comprehensive data access and customization tool. Pricing and Signup for Junior The presentation also touches on the pricing and signup process for clients, including six of the top 10 consulting firms, boutiques, and private equity funds. The pricing is $100 per transcript, which typically gets billed back to the client as part of the research expenditure along with the extra networks used to source calls. Overall, the presentation emphasizes the importance of auditability and traceability when using Gen AI tools in procurement research. Junior saves time on analysis and synthesis for clients who are already paying for interviews on big alpha sites or GLG. The tool is priced at an extra 100 dollars per interview, but it can be refunded back to the client. The signup process involves reaching out to the company, who spin up a new instance for each user due to data security concerns. The platform can be set up within a day of reaching out. It's not uncommon these days to see teachers clamoring for a hack that will change how student discussion plays out in the classroom. Our students still have a tremendous desire for interaction with each other, but it can feel like the second that topic of conversation aligns to a learning objective, the struggle for engagement is REAL. When the odds are against us like this, it seems as if we need to pull off something BIG to get student discussion where we want it to be…almost like pulling off some kind of heist! Yet, we're flipping the classic heist narrative here – it's about giving, not taking. And the GLG is just the right team to dive into the vast “ocean” of possibilities.

On a scale of 1 - 10, how would you rate your ability to use AI in your classroom?Considering all we discussed in our last episode, it's understandable if that number isn't very high. But there's another side to AI, where it may not be out to defeat or even replace educators…but to be our companion in brainstorming, solution seeking, and creation for our students. Welcome to the GLG “nerd lab” where we're going to consider how AI might have the potential to be “The Big Hero”, too.
“Come with us if you want to live.” Okay, it's not THAT drastic, but at this moment in time, we are in dire need of quite a few conversations about the many facets of Artificial Intelligence when it comes to learning and teaching. Some educators see a post-apocalyptic world bearing down on us, while others just see a tool that can be incredibly useful, even …fun. Wherever your own personal programing has you on this continuum, there's going to be a few bits and bytes here for you as the GLG explores AI in schools.

Not to give too big of a spoiler, but the film “Rogue One, A Star Wars Story” ends with a very important word: “Hope”. When we look at literacy instruction and learning, we find “hope” when our striving readers begin to master reading comprehension. This incredibly sought after skill unlocks so many others - reaching far beyond mere recall into analysis, creation, and synthesis. It doesn't matter if you're reading a social studies textbook chapter, “Rosie Revere Engineer” or….say…the schematics used to create the Death Star, perhaps?. Reading comprehension is about bringing together varied skills to transform information on a page into real power….and hope! Stick around while our “ragtag group of rebels” in the GLG discuss another such group -the crew of the “Rogue One” and tie their collaborative mission for crucial comprehension - to our own.
Raoul Pal, founder and CEO of Real Vision and author of the Global Macro Investor, joins Julia La Roche on episode 121 to share his macro outlook, views on cryptocurrency and AI, and his Exponential Age thesis. In this episode, Pal makes a case that we're currently in the bottom of the business cycle and could be headed for what he's coined as “macro summer” next year. According to Pal, a macro summer is the “holy grail for macro investing,” characterized by falling rates, falling inflation and growth picking up. Pal noted that tech stocks and crypto priced in a recession last year, and they're forward-looking, indicating a more positive outlook for the economy, while the Russell 2000 and oil are more reflective of the present day and a slow economy. Pal, a Goldman Sachs alum, previously co-managed GLG's global macro fund, one of the world's largest. Since retiring back in 2004 at age 36, he now authors a research letter, The Global Macro Investor (GMI), which is read by some of the most influential hedge funds and asset managers. He's also the founder of Real Vision, an online subscription media company specializing in long-form investor interviews. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a classic battle waged - led by a group of rebels who dared to think differently - engaging in disciplined practice that would ultimately yield them the power to transcend time, space, and physical limitations. As Yoda might say: “Talking about the Jedi we are?” But as is the GLG way, we have one foot firmly planted in the world of education which means, the answer is Yes - BUT we are also talking about a different kind of training: teaching new readers!
This episode is brought to you by Oberle Risk Strategies, the leading insurance brokerage and insurance diligence provider for the search fund community. The company is led by August Felker (himself a 2-time successful searcher), and has been trusted by search investors, lenders, searchers and CEOs for over a decade now. Their due diligence offering (which is 100% free of charge) will assess the pros and cons of your target company's insurance program, including any potential coverage gaps, the pro-forma insurance pricing, and the program structure changes needed for closing. At or shortly after closing, they then execute on all of those findings on your behalf. Oberle has serviced over 900 customers across a decade of operation, including countless searchers and CEOs within the ETA community * This episode is brought to you by Symphony. Symphony not only performs technical due diligence engagements for search funds, Private Equity firms, and strategic acquirers, but they also partner with those buyers on an ongoing basis on all things product (outsourced development, team augmentation, new product prototyping, UI refreshes, QA professionalization, and so on). Symphony is offering a full 15% off of any of their services for listeners of In the Trenches. Just go to the Contact form on their website and tell them that you're a listener of the podcast to receive this discount! * Today I'm joined by Peter Lehrman, the Founder and CEO of Axial Market. For those of you who don't know, Axial is the North America's #1 online platform that connects buyers and sellers of small and medium sized businesses. Axial is used by over 20,000 investors, M&A advisors and CEOs, allowing them to connect on a confidential basis to explore M&A, debt, buyout, and growth equity transactions, to name just a few. Over 10,000 transactions are posted each year on Axial, covering companies that generate anywhere between $2.5M – $250M in revenue. Prior to Axial, Peter worked in private equity at SFW Capital Partners and was part of the founding team at Gerson Lehrman Group (or “GLG”, for short), a platform where investors and other users are able to connect on-demand with experts spanning a countless number of industries and disciplines.
Whether it's a report from a sub or a comment from a passing observer, the way people talk about educator's students often boils down to one thing: student behavior. It runs the gamut from “That class is completely out of control,” to “what a polite and respectful group of young people!” Educators everywhere are trying to amend the former and replicate the latter, but it starts with a firm understanding of the science of behavior. And of course, to balance out all this research, we're relating it by way of a pretty “sweet” metaphor that would make both Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp proud. . . “The suspense for GLG's first episode of season 4 is terrible . . . we hope it will last!”
We humans tend to be empathic, and our brains reward us with hits of dopamine when we help our fellow beings. So, it is no surprise that when we do good by providing charity or means for our fellow humans to improve their lives, we feel good. And because of that, I am so excited to speak with the guest on this episode, Mark Gerson. Mark is an incredible human being. He has a JD from Yale Law School, he married a rabbi, is the author of a brilliant book, the host of a great podcast, and he has had spectacular success in the business world founding Gerson Lehrman Group also known as GLG, Thuzio, Tel Aviv Angel Group and, later, Maverick Ventures Israel, a venture capital fund. But these are just some of the things that impress me about Mark. At least as impressive has been his total dedication to his charities and to measurably making our world a better place. He oversees United Hatzalah, an inspired medical operation in Israel, as well as African Mission Healthcare Foundation, a similarly inspired medical operation that supports Christian Medical Ministries in Africa. He talks about the benefits of participating in charity work and the meaning and sustainable joy it provides. He also shares tips on fundraising: a Jedi level skill that requires incredible finesse and has been described as the most difficult sale of all. So, listen in as Mark shares timeless wisdom of charity: how we get so much more than we give, when we give. If you're so moved, the link for African Mission Healthcare is: africanmissionhealthcare.org and the link for United Hatzalah is israelrescue.org.
We at GLG love a “fish out of water story.” Some of our favorite connections on the Pop Culture Playground have been about characters who leave their lives of comfort and familiarity who embark on a journey of self discovery. Today, we will once again revisit this classic trope, this time with a movie (and spinoff tv show) about a group of vampire roommates trying to make it in our modern world - and growing very little (but making us laugh a ton) in the process. “They say that vampires' hearts are cold and dead. Definitely dead. But we don't know. We think they still feel things inside” so long as we look closely at What (They) Do in the Shadows. Stay tuned.

When you're watching sport on the telly, do you realise how much passion goes into the grounds?I'm not talking about the passion from the coaches, the players and the fans. As far as the GLG is concerned, the fun of connecting pedagogy to pop culture and listening to some good tunes in the process never will “go out of style” - so put on your favorite “cardigan”, (even if you have to crank up the AC first) and join us for a game we know “All too Well” on the Pop Culture Playground.

Teachers don't choose to become teachers because of the glory, sizable paycheck, and the countless hours educators spent planning, delivering and assessing learning. We become teachers because we love working with and inspiring the next generation and because we had an exceptional teacher ourselves that instilled a love of life-long learning. As we mentioned in our parent university episode on technology, today's students have grown up in a time unlike any other. Today, we are going to shine the GLG light on Gen Z, those 11 to 26 year olds - and we are going to go straight to the source. With a very special, confident and impressive guest.

As very grateful chicagoans we leave the chill of winter behind us, we embrace the fact that we are moving into spring that will inevitably be rainy….or even foggy. But what if the fog surrounding us isn't in the atmosphere at all…but is more of a metaphorical fog? Few educational topics are “foggier” than assessment for even experienced educators. But hold onto your foghorns, folks, because the GLG is here to share some assessment strategies sure to shed some light on the topic- dissipating the fog and making the path to solid classroom assessment as clear as a bright sunny day.

One of the kids wants to be a YouTuber when she grows up and is begging for her own channel. Another one would play Minecraft all day long if you let him. Your teenager barely looks up from his phone. Your preschooler has a complete meltdown when you're waiting to get your food at a restaurant unless you let her watch a few videos. And through it all, they dutifully pack up their Chromebooks every day to engage with, you guessed it, even more technology at school. What's a parent to do? It's a tricky question, like so many of the questions parents have as they navigate their childrens' growth and learning. That's why the GLG is kicking off our “Parent University” mini-series. As parents of school-aged children ourselves, in this episode we will make connections to our fellow-parent listeners and help answer some questions along the way.

That's why we're here to talk about retrieval practices. If you've ever asked students to pick back up on where they left off and been met with blank stares…? Since 2019, GLG has conducted a survey of global CEOs to help our clients and the broader public better understand how these trends impact business, and what business leaders expect for the future. In our fourth annual survey, we interviewed more than 450 executives. And the results tell a markedly different—and less optimistic—story than in previous years. Yet numbers don't tell the whole story. Fortunately, our guest today, Sheri McCoy, the former CEO and Director of Avon Products, Inc. is here to help analyze the results, and add her own perspective to the conversation. Listen in as Sheri shares her thoughts on the biggest concerns executives face, including hot-button issues like how to navigate inflation, remote work policies and even Elon Musk's handling of Twitter.

Hey guild members! It's not just the weather outside that's frightful. In the 1993 classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Jack, the spook-tacular Pumpkin King, is so inspired by Christmas Town, he decides to try his hand at taking the reins. So join the GLG as we put our shrunken heads together to make six connections to education, leadership and teams honoring this terrr[or}----ific film in our pop culture Winter Wonderland.
To paraphrase Mr. Miyagi from the 1984 classic film “The Karate Kid”, “there's no such thing as a bad student; only a bad teacher.” Now hear us out. While we here at the GLG avoid shame & blame where teachers are concerned, we can all admit that some lessons are certainly more engaging than others! But why? And what does engagement really even mean? We're here to discuss this concept in our very favorite way - using a metaphoric lens. This time, we've set Karate Kid and Netflix's Cobra Kai in our sights; so join us for another 2-part series for what we hope will be an “engaging” conversation.
