Hello Seattle Mariners fans! This week the gang Mikey, Anders and Evan are back with a new episode focusing on the ZIPS projections that are out in the wild. Who got snub? Who is overrated? Who's primed for a breakout? We discuss all the details. Furthermore, podcast host Michael Ajeto is a finalist for the SABR analytics contemporary analysis award for his article on seam shifted wake. On this episode Mikey demystifies this phenomenon and shows us all a new way to think about it. Lastly the gang assess the final additions to the Mariners roster: Tommy La Stella and J.B. Bukauskas. Ben Lindbergh and Meg Rowley review all of the action from the historic, eventful fourth and fifth games of the World Series, banter about a fan heckling Rob Manfred, and share multiple Past Blasts (33:22) from 1925 (plus a throwback, Philly-centric Past Blast from 1868). Then (50:08) they talk to Baseball Prospectus writer Michael Ajeto […]
Keep or Kut - Pete (@PeteBBaseball) and Chad (@chadyoung) continue down a list of players who they think will be hard to value going into 2023 drafts. This time around there are no pitchers, but quite a lot of outfielders. From the seemingly zapped power of Ronald Acuña Jr. to the extremely up-and-down season of Seiya Suzuki, Chad and Pete touch 'em all. Join Pitcher List Plus and get an ad-free website and access to the Pitcher List Discord community, while supporting the podcast. Timestamps: 1:27 - Seiya Suzuki has had a roller coaster of a debut season. Regardless, Chad thinks that the final result is most likely reflective of what we should expect next season. Pete is holding out hope it could get better, but wants to see some improvement in that lineup. 12:03 - Tyler O'Neill was a major let down for folks this season. Chad found something odd about pitches in the heart of the plate, and Pete thinks the ban of the shift could help O'Neill after looking at his wOBA vs the shift in comparison to his wOBA with no shift. 28:40 - What happened to Ronald Acuña Jr.'s power? Him or Aaron Judge for 2023? 39:28 - Jesse Winker is turning 30, still can't hit lefties, and might be in a crowded outfield, so Pete thinks he is out on him. After doing some reading by author Michael Ajeto, Chad thinks Winker's issue could be mechanical. 46:53 - Pete is blaming any of his losses on Ketel Marte (completely unfairly, but man was he high on Marte!). Chad acknowledges the long period of time where Marte posted an elite wRC+, so maybe there is hope, but also wonders if the balls negatively impacted Marte. 54:35 - Chad and Pete want Joey Gallo to go some place that will be low-pressure and result in everyday at-bats. 1:02:03 - Taylor Ward's wRC+'s by month are crazy. Could his shoulder have prevented him from a monster season, making him a great buy in 2023 drafts? 1:05:45 - Is Oneil Cruz solving his strikeout issues, or are they still too shaky and the position too deep? *Glorious horns* A guest has arrived! On this week's episode Mike, Jon, and Sam welcome in friend Michael Ajeto to talk about a whole bevvy of things. The headline here is Mikey's SABR Award nomination for a well written article about player names and assimilation in Major League Baseball. We tackle politics as well, because it wouldn't be a conversation between us without it veering into that area. The show ends on a pair of baseball notes: Mikey gives us what he thinks are the most interesting pitches in baseball so far, and recants the story of his unique relationship with Mariners relief star Paul Sewald. It's a fantastic conversation with one of our favorite people, so pull up a chair and enjoy. Hello everyone! Today Evan James and Michael Ajeto are joined by Lookout Landing writer Anders Jorstad to talk Mariners. We kick it off with some minor league talk about Emerson Hancock, George Kirby and the young arms across the organization. We dip a little bit into Jerry's new status, and how we expect it to influence the Mariners spending or not spending moving into the offseason. There's much discussion about the short stop position, particularly Trevor Story and some of the other superstar names who might make sense as additions to the feeble Mariner infield. We look at some of the holes in the roster moving forward and theorize some ways to close those holes, and maybe which routes to doing so might be open. We look a little bit at the outfield and do some risk assessment on a very interesting but ultimately unreliable group of players. We take a look at the kids: Jarred and Cal, and preach some patience as they work through rookie struggles. Evan also repeatedly calls T Mobile Park “Safeco” and it confuses everyone; Shameful, disgusting behavior. Mikey and Evan forget that Wade Miley threw a no hitter this year. Lastly we eagerly anticipate the rise of Matt Brash: Relief Pitcher. Finally, Mikey gives a little tease for an article he is writing on ascending Mariner: Yohan Ramirez.
Eno welcomes Michael Ajeto from Lookout Landing and Janice Scurio from NBC Sports Edge and South Side Sox to this episode of Rates & Barrels. Trey and Patrick talk about the ethics of baseball with Mike Gianella and Michael Ajeto. Can you enjoy and play dynasty baseball without being a baseball nihilist?
Janice Scurio (@scuriiosa) and Michael Ajeto (@dysthymikey) tweak the weekly power rankings episode to include MVPs for each team in MLB. The duo discusses who has stood out most among the top five teams in the league, and examine other notable seasons from stars thus far. Look for power rankings every Tuesday morning as part of the expanded Circling the Bases podcast schedule.Privacy Policy and California Privacy Notice.
Kev Mahserejian (@RotoSurgeon) and PitcherList analyst Michael Ajeto (@dysthymikey) cover a list of starting pitchers that have either bounced back or potentially could due on their track record. Bounce-Backs: Can they keep it up/improve?-Kyle Hendricks-Ross Stripling-Kyle Gibson-Alex CobbHope or Drop? Can they figure it out??-Blake Snell-Luis Castillo-Chris Paddack-Dylan Bundy-Kenta Maeda-Patrick CorbinKev and Michael also discuss Olivia Rodrigo's new album SOUR because why not.
White Sox ace Lucas Giolito did not start the year the way we would have wanted. His strikeouts have fallen, fastball velocity has dropped, and he's also getting hit hard — a recipe for disaster. He's had OK starts, and bad starts — he's also given up nine home runs this year, already well past his eight in 2020's shortened season. We think that Giolito is a much better pitcher than his 3-4 record and 4.35 ERA implies. Michael Ajeto of PitcherList and our Seattle Mariners sister site, Lookout Landing, agrees, and explains why in this excellent piece written earlier this month. In this in-depth conversation about Giolito's mechanics, Mikey discusses what small adjustments Giolito needs to make to get himself right again. He may already be on the way to getting back to his old self, as his last start on May 19 he pitched eight innings, holding the Twins to one run off of two hits and striking out 11. We also discuss Mikey's PitcherList article on Tony La Russa (yeah, yeah, him again) and the problems surrounding his hiring, and the nefarious implications behind the statements he made regarding Yermín Mercedes taking Willians Astudillo of the Twins deep on a 3-0 count last week. We're always pro-player, always pro-fun. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Shaggin' Flies is joined this week by Scott Chu (@ifthechufits), Pitcher List writer and manager and czar of the phenomenon knows as Fantasy Curling. Scott was such a horrid, difficult, uncompelling guest that we just HAD to talk with him for three whole hours, so I'll let the notes do the rest of the talking: 0:01 – The show is thrown for a loop from second number one as we are confronted by the visage of a non-mustachioed Scott Chu 0:03 – Naturally, the first all-cis-male-identified episode of Shaggin' Flies in three weeks spends the first six minutes talking about facial hair 0:08 – Scott and Ben on deriving just the slightest pleasure from playfully annoying their spouses (to Zach's befuddlement) 0:10 – Oh yeah, the introduction. #GingerBalance 0:12 – The joys of Southwest Michigan, and giving out Moderna at the Pfizer factory 0:14 – Freud would have something to say about how close we all are to our parents 0:16 – The regional accents of the Upper Midwest, some of which are close but not quite to Canadian. 0:20 – The teenage Michigander tradition of trekking to (and ruining) Windsor, Ontario gets Scott into trouble with immigration officials 0:23 – How the federal government got Wisconsin to raise their drinking age 0:26 – How to properly order a burger at a 24-hour diner (hint: not medium-rare) 0:29 – Scott dives deep into the fascinating minutiae of American Sign Language 0:33 – Turns out ASL also has TONS of problematic language (or, “if it was invented by white people in the 1800s, it's probably racist”) 0:37 – The surprising degree to which our cognition and modes of thinking and being are directed by the ability to hear. 0:43 – Sign language has no tenses and minimal grammar, and Zach gets way overly optimistic about language learning as a route to increasing empathy 0:48 – Pidgin sign and a way cooler way to refer to Kalamazoo, Michigan 0:53 – Ben dubs us (accurately) the Seinfeld of baseball podcasts 0:54 – One of us has graced the cover of the Wall Street Journal and it's not Ben or Zach 0:55 – What is Fantasy Curling and how did it get Scott Chu in the WSJ? 1:02 – Fantasy Congress and Fantasy Supreme Court are (or were) a thing, apparently. 1:06 – Curling as Canadian Golf 1:09 – The idea of Fantasy Congress is complicated by the dysfunctional-at-best nature of the American government 1:12 – Oberon and Leinenkugels, legends of the Midwest 1:13-1:20 – How Eno Put Zach Onto Hazy IPAs Which Are Kind Of Like Sours But Not Really (Either Way Ben Hates Both Of Them And It's All Because Of Warheads) (As In Candy, Not A Nuclear Device) 1:21 – Two things that are close to water 1:22 – Pregaming a Motion City Soundtrack show 1:24 – Malört and other wraths of Chicago 1:29 – Jesus getting sponge-fed wine while up on the cross is an objectively funny image 1:32 – BRING ME TWO HUNDRED PHILISTINE FORESKINS 1:37 – Why baseball? Sunburn! 1:41 – The fun of writing the Batter's Box segment, and Ben's request for information about Philip Evans is denied, because we're not a baseball podcast or anything. 1:43 – “You're a hack!” “Duh!” 1:46 – Scott spends two minutes giving a well-reasoned analysis of Pavin Smith, because it is a baseball podcast. 1:51 – The official position of Shaggin' Flies: Baseball Is Good! 1:53 – Scott details his time working for the Fair Housing Association, all the terrible acts of racism, ableism, and discrimination one encounters in that line of work, and therefore being perfectly okay with bringing politics into sports. 2:00 – Being buried in the news? Not great for mental health! 2:02 – Tiger Stadium and the ~plethora~ of Memorial Stadia 2:05 – The GM building flips the bird to Canada, in true ‘Murican fashion 2:05 – Scott and Zach bond over hatreds of Indiana drivers 2:08 – Gigantic burgers at Fifth Third Park make Zach and Ben lose their math for a sec 2:11 – Order of Operations Trifecta 2:15 – Scott and Ben on arguing with their kids about personal hygiene 2:20 – Ben Palmer resembles Matt Stafford (and Zach's cat makes her appearance) 2:24 – Even in Scotland they hate gingers 2:27 – Homer at the Bat 2:31 – Bob Costas in Baseketball 2:36 – Just some white guy BS, huh 2:40 – Almost made it to the end before the weekly Michael Ajeto mention! 2:44 – Shoutout to Ben's brother Greg, with reference to the boiling hot dog water incident 2:50 – The Full Count Scott's Book Recommendation: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams Scott's Food Recommendation: Bulgogior Bibimbap Scott's Movies/TV Recommendation: Bob's Burgers Scott's Music Recommendation: Linkin Park (Hybrid Theory) Scott's Miscellaneous Recommendation: Dove Hand Sanitizer Get PL+ and join our community!: https://pitcherlist.com/plus
