I recently spoke with Michael Fahey about some developments on human rights related issues in Taiwan, including the anticipated ruling by Taiwan's constitutional court on the Death Penalty. Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/recently-debated-human-rights-issues-in-taiwan-a-conversation-with-michael-fahey-ep-294/ We spoke on September 16th and Taiwan's constitutional court made its ruling on September 20th. At the time I had spoken to Michael about a campaign and online petition to expand access to dual nationality for long-term foreign permanent residents of Taiwan. To learn more about that check out episode 293. Michael is an American lawyer and resident of Taipei since 1988. Did you know that there is a campaign underway in Taiwan that is calling for foreign permanent residents to be able to apply for dual nationality, effectively allowing them to obtain Taiwanese citizenship after 5 years without giving up their original passport?   Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/dual-nationality-for-long-term-permanent-residents-of-taiwan-discussion-with-michael-fahey-ep-293/   An online petition for this proposal was launched on August 19th and they are trying to collect 5,000 signatures to support it by October 19th: https://join.gov.tw/idea/detail/951c745d-4484-4923-953f-4cdaefe7f344   I recently spoke with Michael Fahey, about this campaign which was initiated by Crossroads and Forward Taiwan. We talked about many of the most common concerns raised by a proposal like this, given the sensitive position that Taiwan is in due to the threats it faces from the PRC (People's Republic of China).   Michael is an American lawyer and resident of Taipei since 1988. He is foreign counsel at Formosa Transnational (萬國) and also founder of Forward Taiwan.   If you'd like to sign the online petition to expand access to dual nationality for long-term foreign permanent residents of Taiwan, please note a few things:   1)    In order to be able to sign the petition you must be a citizen of Taiwan or holder of an A(P)RC (Alien Permanent Resident Certificate) and have a Taiwan mobile number. 2)    When filling out the petition form it's best to use a computer not a smart phone but have your phone nearby and have patience when going through the process.  3)    Whether or not you are personally able to sign the petition, please consider also sharing this with friends, family or colleagues who would and are able to support it.   Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: ·       How the proposal to expand access to dual nationality for long-term foreign permanent residents of Taiwan came about ·       The case of Michael Boyden, a British citizen and permanent resident of Taiwan ·       How Taiwan's nationality law was drafted in the 1920s and how it compares with other countries laws on nationality ·       How Taiwan's nationality law is not symmetrical for native-born Taiwanese and naturalizing foreign citizens ·       How expanding access to dual nationality for long-term foreign permanent residents of Taiwan could make Taiwan more resilient ·       How immigration could be a way to deal with Taiwan becoming a super-aged society ·       Concerns about whether this proposal will make it easier PRC (People's Republic of China) citizens to immigrate to Taiwan and become citizens ·       PRC (People's Republic of China) citizens are governed by a different law; the act for the relations between peoples of the mainland and the Taiwan region ·       The proposal is to change the nationality law not the act for the relations between peoples of the mainland and the Taiwan region ·       How to handle concerns about PRC citizens who've naturalized in third countries using their foreign citizenship to come and naturalize in Taiwan ·       How the fear that crime would go up is unfounded because foreign nationals in Taiwan commit crimes at a rate of 50 percent of the native population ·       What exactly is being proposed ·       The procedure for foreign permanent residents in Taiwan to obtain dual Taiwanese citizenship ·       The types of people and special cases that have been granted dual Taiwanese citizenship ·       The standards required for foreign permanent residents in Taiwan to be granted dual Taiwanese citizenship ·       Cases of foreign permanent residents in Taiwan that applied and failed to attain dual Taiwanese citizenship ·       How the process to get the nationality law amended could actually be a very long process that could take 5-20 years ·       Arguments for and against the proposal ·       How people who wish to sign the online petition must be citizens of Taiwan and have a Taiwan mobile number ·       When filling out the petition it's best to do so on a computer and not on a smart phone, but to keep your mobile phone nearby ·       Have patience in filling out the online petition form because the interface is a bit difficult to use ·       How foreign permanent residents can't get household registration and how that limits them ·       Reasons people would like to get dual Taiwanese citizenship ·       How to deal with individuals who have dual nationalities ·       How male citizens of Taiwan under the age of 36 are required to serve in the military ·       How Taiwan could take steps to ensure that people serve in the military   Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/dual-nationality-for-long-term-permanent-residents-of-taiwan-discussion-with-michael-fahey-ep-293/

"Some folks thought The Wans were dead in the water. I like to think we were in hibernation,” says lead singer Simon Kerr of the Nashville based rock band, The Wans. Described as sounding “like The Stooges having a baby with Stone Temple Pilots” by Classic Rock Magazine, the group are welcoming their highly-anticipated fourth LP Magical Touch, which includes 11 songs that showcase a refreshing new approach that is sure to perk up your ears. Magical Touch will be released on July 26, 2023, which is exactly 11 years to the date of their first release. The Wans' new eleven-song LP, Magical Touch, was co-produced, recorded and mixed by Michael Fahey at Starbird Sound in Nashville using vintage recording equipment and recorded live with minimal overdubs. With two new additions to the band, Akshay Narang and Noah Denney, it was sure to add to the expansion of the sonic qualities. Noah Denney, formerly of Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown and who originally played bass in The Wans, now sits behind the drums. “The new sound is so exciting for me. We've known Akshay for over a decade and bonded over everything from Nine Inch Nails to Depeche Mode so it was only natural to ask him to play some synth and guitar with the band.”, says Kerr. The hard-touring Wans have been on the rise for a while now, playing major festivals like Austin City Limits, Voodoo Fest, Forecastle and Hangout Fest, and sharing bills with Pearl Jam, Beck, and Queens of the Stone Age. They recorded their 2014 album He Said She Said, with Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton, Rival Sons), the acclaimed record landed them press at USA Today, NME, Consequence of Sound, The AV Club, and more. Not only that, the band's music has been featured everywhere from major motion picture Point Break and TV shows like Nashville, Longmire, and Necessary Roughness to a powerhouse commercial for BMW'S 4 Series Gran Coupe, which was soundtracked by the band's muscular riff rocker "Black Pony."“This record feels like my novella, a journey similar to Steinbecks ‘East of Eden'. It took 4 years to write and a week to record.” says Kerr. There's no doubt that The Wans wore their influences proudly on their sleeves, like Queens of the Stone Age and Nirvana, but this record feels more precise and like nothing we've heard before from the band. There are certainly hints of 80's and 90's Brit-Pop influences, but the songwriting has become more focused and that's not an overthought.” Kerr continues, “My dad, Tony Kerr, has been my main songwriting partner since I was 16. Some Father-Son's bond over fishing, but we bond over writing songs. It's become effortless when we write together.”Bassist Thomas Bragg states, “Simon and I have been so excited with what's going on in the Irish/British music scene in the last few years. Bands like Idles and Fontaines D.C have made some of the best records of the last decade and I think that definitely had an effect on our music and this record.”The Wans' have always shared a brotherhood and love for making rock n' roll, which is much needed in today's overall climate and music scene. Lyrically, this record purposefully radiates self-awareness, love, and togetherness. “The Wans' are everything to me. When it comes to the song's they're all we have.” says Kerr. The great Joe Strummer once said, “People have got to stop pretending they're not in the world. It's time to take that humanity back into the center of the ring and follow that for a time. Think on that. Without people you're nothing.”Host - Trey MitchellIG - treymitchellphotography   IG - feeding_the_senses_unsensoredFB - facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848

What is powerlifting’s (nearly) unbreakable record? w/Michael Fahey Director of Westside vs the World

A couple weeks ago, Eliud Kipchoge ran a sub-two-hour marathon. The first time a human has ever done that. That got us thinking…what is powerlifting’s nearly unbreakable record? Kipchoge had a number of advantages: running with others who were pacing him rather than running against him; vehicles with lasers discovering the best path to run in; and some special shoes not yet available to the public. Because of these factors, his record is unofficial. Are some powerlifting meets similarly skewed and should we want that for just the spectacle and the accomplishment? We asked Michael Fahey -- director of Westside vs the World and the guy responsible for getting powerlifting on ESPN -- to join us for our full discussion of the broader question. Here are some of our thoughts: Are all the broken records in the past few years the result of a bigger pool of talent? Can training methods make that much difference if there haven’t really been any new innovations in a long time? Are co-efficients really fair comparisons? Who thought 1,000+ pound raw squats would become fairly regular thing? Do tested records mean more or less than non-tested ones? Women have turned in some amazing performances in all the competition formats. Are we even capable of defining the limits at this point? It was difficult to come to any definitive conclusion, but we covered a lot of ground. You can count this one as 100% opinion. You can find Michael on Instagram @westsidefilm. The World Powerlifting Organizations Super Finals (equipped powerlifting) are on ESPN 3, October 28, 2019 at 1pm ET. You can watch at the link below. It’s a BONUS episode! And there are SPOILERS! Obviously, we wanted talk about the end of Game of Thrones. It’s not that we’re terribly upset about it, but wow there’s a lot of pissed off people on the internet. Beyond that, it got us thinking about our personal stories, about beginnings and endings, and how difficult it might be to tell the true story of someone’s life in a film or TV show. Here’s what we came up with: What did we love and hate most about the way the individual stories played out at the end of the show? To what extent do each of us plot out our personal stories in our heads before we make big decisions?  If we know where we want to end up, how do we choose our steps along the way? How much impact do comments from people on YouTube and social media about the decisions we’ve made (that affect who we work with and the content we produce) have on us? How is storytelling different in fiction vs documentary/real life? We’re joined on the panel in the first segment by Connor O’Neal who produces the video version of the show and handles Mike’s YouTube channel. Our panel discussion kicks off from the jump. Michael Fahey, director of the documentary Westside vs The World, joins us about 39:00 to give his perspective on presenting the stories of real people on film in a way that’s both accurate and entertaining. (And commercially viable.) Westside vs The World, which details the history of Louie Simmons and Westside Barbell, is now available for rent or purchase on most steaming platforms. We’ve all heard the old tale about cracking your knuckles and arthritis, but what about your neck, back and all the other parts of you that crack and pop? Is there actually a connection to arthritis? Why do chiropractors and other manual practitioners pop or “adjust” your back or neck? What about shoulders, hips, and knees that pop on their own? Is that good or bad? Does any of this relate to overall joint health? Dr. Jordan Shallow is a chiropractor and competitive powerlifter. He helps us sort through these questions, and he gives some good guidelines on what to look for in a good practitioner. Our ideas start at about 15:00. Jordan joins starting at around 24:00.
