Michelle Quirk, MD is a pediatrician and pediatric hospitalist in the Philadelphia area. She is also a certified run coach and started Mindful Marathon (mindful-marathon.com) to help busy professionals develop well-being through running and fitness. Importantly, Michelle was not always a runner, but over the years learned how to engage with her own personal wellness through running and fitness. That engagement led to the Mindful Marathon passion project – by which trains doctors and other busy professionals how to run and coaches them through short- and long-distance challenges. We talk about Michelle's journey into running, how a pledge to patients to get healthier inspired her to be healthier and how running became a great stress outlet for her. WE take many analogies from the running world and bring them into medicine and surgery including training, nutrition, and recovery. I love talking to Michelle, I hope you enjoy too!If interested in learning more about Michelle or having her be your run coach, you can find her at:Mindful-Marathon.comYouTube: @MindfulMarathon

Dr. Charlotte Markey is a psychologist and the author of two brilliant books geared toward children (but they also taught me a lot): "The Body Image Book for Girls" and "Being You: The Body Image Book for Boys". She hopped on the pod to talk about the books, and was also gracious enough to share her personal story - of what it was like to be told as a child that she didn't have a "dancer's body", and what it's like as a parent raising a boy and a girl. ************************************ This episode was presented by Mindful Marathon. Mindfulness and meditation coach Josephine Atluri has seven children, including three sets of twins. She has experienced all the highs, the lows, and tangled messes of complicated emotions that come with having children. Because of fertility issues and a miscarriage, she and her husband adopted. Then they were pregnant with twins, and rather than enjoying the miracle of being able to carry children, she lived in constant fear of miscarrying again. Faced with the decision of what to do with their extra embryos, they went the surrogate route. Twice. And in both instances, those surrogates had twins. Well into her family's journey, she discovered mindfulness and meditation. Now she shares the insights she wishes she had. ************************************ This episode was presented by Mindful Marathon. Even when we've grabbed the gold ring, it's possible to feel like something is missing. That was the case for Dr. Michelle Quirk, a pediatrician whose career and life were firing on all pistons … and yet. She felt burned out and boxed in. On this episode of She Turned Entrepreneur we learn how, step by step, the founder of Mindful Marathon, a coaching practice devoted to aspiring runners, hit her stride! Michelle didn't want to abandon her medical practice, but still had to face the fact that it wasn't bringing her enough of what she wanted. For anyone else who has experienced this gnawing feeling, she has some advice: First, take a pause. Spend some time with yourself. In Michelle's case, she cleared space for taking long runs. And before she knew it? Michelle had completed her first marathon and gotten clarity about this much: She was passionate about running! Knowing what you love is the entrepreneur's first challenge. What Michelle did next was equally important, however. She looked for a sounding board, in her case a fellow physician who had found a way to add a new venture while keeping her medical practice going at the same time. It was an “aha” for Michelle, who envisioned Mindful Marathon for the first time. Today she's got a thriving practice, coaching one-to-one and in small groups, offering a virtual race series, designing training plans and running retreats. Whatever your goal – running a marathon or building a business – Michelle will inspire you with her story, resources and simple tips for shifting from stuck to full steam ahead! Here are key takeaways from the conversation:· You don't have to run a marathon. Just lace up your shoes and start with five minutes!· As was the case for Michelle, entrepreneurial ventures offer an opportunity to reimagine or reinvent our identities. · If you undertake an entrepreneurial venture, some people will ask if you've lost your mind. But you will also find plenty of cheerleaders. Stick with the latter!· Have a passion? With time and patience, you can find a way to turn it into a business. · Burnout Remedy: Take a step back and spend some time with yourself.· If you're feeling stuck, don't hesitate to seek counsel from a friend, a therapist or coach.· Are you a new runner? Start low and go slow. Find a pace that's comfortable for you!· If you stay consistent you will get there – in running, in business, in life! Here's a quick look into the episode:· Michelle's evolution from being a kid who hated running to being a periodic runner in her young adult years to becoming a devotee when she discovered the restorative nature of running as part of a self-care plan during a particularly stressful period of life.· At the peak of her career as a young pediatrician, Michelle hit a patch where she was training but felt like she needed something more. The decision to run her first marathon proved transformational.· Michelle hasn't quit medicine so much as folded it into her coaching enterprise and overall identity. She felt the desire to get out of the box and try something new.· Mindful Marathon offers one-to-one coaching, group programs for beginners, a virtual race series, training plans and running retreats.· Creating a Niche: Michelle followed her passion and evolved it organically, which afforded her time and space to find ways to marry medicine with running.· Michelle has been able to maintain a medical practice and a coaching practice by setting up dedicated work hours for both.· When she felt stuck on a treadmill, literally and metaphorically, Michelle got intentional. She took time to pause and be with herself, which she did while out on long runs that ultimately helped her get clarity about her purpose and the direction she needed to go.· Confiding in a fellow physician who had started a coaching practice in addition to her medical practice proved a gamechanger for Michelle, for whom it opened up a new path.· Tips for Wannabe Runners:1. Wherever you are in terms of conditioning, get moving.2. Start low and go slow.3. Find a “conversational” pace that's comfortable for you.4. Leave your technology at home and just be present to how you feel.5. Try run-walk intervals to build up stamina.· Even though we live in a “compare and despair” social media culture, Michelle urges runners at whatever level not to get caught up in trying to keep up with anyone else.· Recommended Reading:o "The Miracle Equation: The Two Decisions That Move Your Biggest Goals from Possible, to Probable, to Inevitable," by Hal Elrod.o "The EntreMD Method: A Proven Roadmap for Doctors Who Want to Live Life and Practice Medicine on Their Terms," by Nneka Unachukwu. About Michelle:In the midst of a lively career in pediatrics, Dr. Michelle Quirk discovered that running could change her life. She embraced the sport by becoming a certified run coach with the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), a local Girls on the Run coach, and a Disney World-loving marathoner. She founded Mindful Marathon to help make running easy and fun for busy professionals. For anyone thinking that running is too hard or that they can't be runners, Michelle is ready to help transform you into a runner. She develops customized training plans for every type of runner—new, old, somewhere in between—and fits those training plans into busy lives, helping her athletes find their edge and achieve their goals.

Sylvie Mae Baldwin performed her one-woman show, Skinny Crazy Small six days a week, first in Seattle and then in New York City. Then she sporadically performed for healthcare professionals. Each time, she had to go back to sixth grade, when her eating disorder took over her life. She couldn't just perform. It had to be authentic. She had to go back there and relive it, to make the audience feel her pain, her struggles, and her triumph. Name a role in producing a show, and Sylvie has filled it. Her CV reads like a scroll. But while she loves acting, her greatest achievement is creating a show that has helped countless people and swung the needle on the stigma surrounding mental health and eating disorders. I'm Christopher, and I'm a recovering alcoholic, marijuana abuser, people pleaser and so much more. More importantly, I'm a mental health advocate thriving in sobriety. I figured with so many new listeners tuning in, and seeing as how I've never done so, I'd lay out my story to kick off Season 2. I grew up completely opposed to alcohol and drugs, yet I became an addict in college. I went through rehab in the spring of 2019, got sober for good May 21 that year. It hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows, but I've reached a point where I virtually never think of alcohol. I have deeper relationships with all my loved ones. I've completed an ultramarathon. Check this out. I actually really like myself. Crazy, right? Jason Wood is an author and a mental health advocate who suffers from orthorexia - a little-known eating disorder defined by obsession with eating healthy foods. Back when he was a self-described "fat kid," he discovered the surefire way to gain praise and to achieve what he then considered successes was to adhere to a strict, albeit downright dangerously restrictive diet. Jason's first book, "Starving for Survival" comes out Jan. 11, 2022, and you can preorder it now. He's taken on the mission of sharing his personal experiences with not just orthorexia, but dealing with an eating disorder as a man. He's also only recently come to terms with being gay, despite having been married his husband back in 2019. Does this all sound intimidating? To Jason, it sounds exhilarating. Yes, he still has a lot of growing to do. But he's come a long way, and he's thrilled by the opportunity to keep getting better. Charlie Engle has seen some things, man. He's run across the Sahara Desert and summited ice-covered volcanoes, and his next goal is to run from the Dead Sea to the top of Mount Everest. He's also spent a year and a half behind bars in federal prison. Charlie is coming up on 30 years sober, and as a public speaker, author, and relentless advocate, he's made a significant impact on treatment for substance abuse, and the stigma surrounding addiction and recovery. Whether it's training for another near-impossible physical feat or simply becoming a better human, Charlie has a universal credo: "Comfort is overrated." We obviously couldn't get to everything Charlie's done and hopes to accomplish in a 1-hour interview. For his entire incredible story (up until now), check out his memoir, "Running Man." TRIGGER WARNING: This episode includes discussions on substance abuse. ************************************ This episode was presented by Mindful Marathon. Ally Garber is relentless with her love, and her work. She's a half-marathoner, a public speaker, and a fervent advocate for those of us recovering from addiction, and everyone living with mental illness. On Oct. 1, Ally's tracker app told her she was 3 years sober, and it broke down all the money and time she's saved. But the biggest reason she got clean was to be fully present with her mother after she got sick in the final year of her life. ************************************ This episode was presented by Mindful Marathon. Women Physicians Flourish. A Podcast About Life and Wellbeing
Michelle Quirk is a pediatrician, who in the first year of practice, lost her father to cancer. She was jolted by that experience, realizing the many parts of herself she had lost touch with during medical training. She found her way back through running, which she says allowed her time to notice the world around her and to feel connected and embodied in a way she hadn't before. Today, Dr. Quirk continues to practice pediatrics, and is a run coach. She founded Mindful Marathon to help make running easy and fun for busy professionals. For anyone thinking that running is too hard, Michelle is ready to help them transform into a runner. Even if you aren't planning to take up a running practice anytime soon, you will enjoy this episode - the real underlying theme here is that many of us physicians have been taught to feel that interests outside of medicine are less important, or not serious enough, when the truth is that finding the things that make us happy and light us up can fuel our ability to flourish - to be better doctors, friends, spouses, parents and leaders. Pam Rickard has tackled more than 100 marathons and ultra-marathons. She's run across the Gobi Desert, and she was on a six-member Icebreaker Run team that ran across the United States to increase awareness of the importance of mental health. Pam exudes gratitude and joy, and calls herself "obnoxiously optimistic." But who wouldn't be after racking up 15 years of sobriety and tens of thousands of miles? She's made it her life's goal of helping others not only survive addiction, but thrive in sobriety. Through her work with Herren Project, she's raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to increase access to treatment and counseling for those who are suffering. In this complicated world, Pam keeps her mantras simple: Grow some good today. Do the next right thing. And even when the road ahead looks rocky, be grateful that you get to run on it. ************************************ This episode was presented by Mindful Marathon. If you've ever wondered what it's like to undergo brain surgery, you're in luck. Martin Parker remembers every moment of his procedure, during which doctors inserted an electronic device into his brain to address his Parkinson's symptoms. He never could have anticipated what would happen once the doctors turned that device on, and asked him to walk down the hallway. ************************************ Our conversation with Martin was presented by Mindful Marathon. Dr. Michelle Quirk is a pediatrician, run coach, and founder of Mindful Marathon. She shares how she went from someone who would come in last for the mile run in school to becoming a marathon runner and coaching others on running. She started running when she had an unprecedented period of stress in her personal and work life. Through running, she experienced an unexpected life transformation which helped her prioritize self care and form healthy boundaries. The mental space that was created as a result of running also helped her realize she was in burnout and needed to pursue a change in her work life. She speaks of her experience running her first marathon "It's who you become in the training process... In January, Dr. Michelle Chestovich launched her podcast Re-Mind Yourself, through which she offers tips and insights on mental health topics from burnout to perfectionism. On Feb. 3, she addressed the topic of allowing ourselves to feel ALL of our emotions. Never could she have imagined how important that would be when her kid sister, Gretchen, committed suicide in early March. The unthinkable tragedy led Michelle to set forth on a grief journey, and she's bringing her listeners, her social media followers, and anyone who will listen with her as she speaks openly about the pain she's processing. She's creating a safe space to talk about grief, loss, and the resulting trauma, while turning up the volume on suicide prevention awareness. ************************************ Our conversation with Michelle was presented by Mindful Marathon. Dr. Quirk is a pediatrician and a run coach. Michelle has such a wonderful personality and we covered a lot of topics including the mindset required of a physician turned entrepreneur. Her company is called Mindful Marathon and she can be contacted at her website https://mindful-marathon.com/
Running has been vital for Michelle Quirk as she's grieved her father, who lost his life to cancer in 2012. It also helps her deal with the trauma she endures daily as a pediatrician. Think about it. Not every child comes through the clinic door with the sniffles. She sees kiddos who are terrified to see a doctor. Little ones with terminal illnesses. Tiny tots who are clearly being neglected and abused at home. So Michelle, like many of us, works out her problems through running. She took that one step further a couple of years ago, when she began her running coaching business, Mindful Marathon. It's geared toward helping professionals cope with stress, anxiety, depression and, one issue that's running rampant in the healthcare industry: burnout. ************************************ This episode was presented by DUI & Behavioral Health Counseling Centers, which has offices here in northern Illinois – in Sycamore, Plano, and Crystal Lake.
