Taming the Inner Critic: Empowering Your Mindset for Positive Running On the days you're tempted to skip a workout, what motivates you to run anyway? Are you thinking, “A missed run equals weight gain!” or, “I'm not going to be a real runner if I don't follow through on my training.” or “I'll only improve if I run every day, so I have to run today, no matter what.” Chasing external outcomes isn't going to make you a better and more committed runner. In fact, it'll only perpetuate the negative feelings you already have, and even block you from appreciating your accomplishments when you do achieve them! This is episode 3 in Stine's new series, Mindful Running and How to Cultivate Presence and Joy in Every Step. Today, she addresses how your mindset shapes your running journey and peels back the layers of motivation, self-talk and intention that influence your steps, so you can make positive change. Top Takeaways: How mindset shapes your running experience Why you aren't satisfied, even when you do reach your goals The #1 reason you get stuck in negative thought loops The 3 step process to transforming your negative thoughts Now, when your negative thought habits threaten to take over, you'll have the tools you need to shift your thinking into joyful motivation. In Episode 2 of the series, Mindful Running and how to Cultivate Presence and Joy in Every Step, Stine goes over the principles of good form, tips for testing your form and improving it + how proper running form helps you run with joy. This episode was sparked by an inspiring interview by Danny Dreyer, the founder of Chi Running and The Energy Blueprint. Danny has been a guiding light for the last 20 years by educating runners worldwide on the art of good running, and his message focuses primarily on the benefits of mindful movement. His motto is, “Don't try to build big muscles to go faster, get rid of what's slowing you down.” You'll learn: How Chi Running can improve your form Why good form helps you run faster and more safely The 3 levels of the training pyramid Tips for testing your form What's really slowing down your running time When you run mindfully and in alignment, running with joy becomes your new reality. While we all start each training cycle rearing to go and extremely motivated for whatever training and life throws our way, the reality is we will all go through periods during training where we're just not motivated. As an example, I know with some of the record heat this summer, it's just plain exhausting to always be battling even when you get your runs in before the sun is up. There's no shortage of reasons we go through stints in our training when we just don't feel motivated to get out the door. So, on today's show we're talking with author Mackenzie Havey. Mackenzie published an awesome book called “Mindful Running” so today we're going to learn from her… How to overcome lack of motivation Tips and tactics to relieve anxiety about performance And the best ways to dispel negative thinking during training and racing We're going to get in-depth about all these issues and the simple things you can implement in your daily training to conquer them. I just looked at myself in the mirror one day and said, ‘I can't do this anymore. I can't continually try to change myself. I can't hate my body. I give up.' In doing that, in hitting rock bottom, it was the best thing that could have ever happened for me because Mindful Miles, years later, came about.” (06:42) (Sara)“For the most part, I think a blanket statement is that you have to have blind faith. That's why it's so important to choose a coach that right off the bat, you have that gut feeling. Because on the days you are doubting yourself, you're going to return to that blind faith.” (15:02) (Sara)“What I've seen in myself and others is we struggle to get back into running or a movement routine, because we have this idea of what running looks like. And oftentimes, it's sparked from comparison of who we used to be, or the comparison of the runner that we know. And, you have to get really honest with yourself and redefine what running looks like. Life looks different after kids. Life looks different with each phase of having a child and how much they need you and rely on you.” (23:18) (Sara)“What does it mean to get back to the runner that you were? Is it time? Is it a feeling? What is that specifically and is it reasonable? We start with these surface level goals and ideas, but will it actually bring us joy and is it actually reasonable and realistic for our lives.” (29:25) (Sara)“This is my firm belief. If your body has weight to lose, it's going to do so on its own. It's going to find its own natural, healthy weight.” (34:33) (Sara)“Data's great, but the way you're feeling and any symptoms that your body is presenting, that's also data. And we can learn to work with that.” (45:03) (Sara)Resources MentionedWhitney's LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/whitney-heins-02ba3b5The Mother Runners Club – https://www.themotherrunners.com/Sara's Website – https://www.mindfulmilesrunning.com/Sara's Instagram –

On the latest episode I speak with Rio Lakeshore, LA-based runner, writer, artist, father and man. It's hard to encapsulate Rio in a sentence so I suggest listening to the episode, but we dive into his growing up in Los Angeles, how moving to the Mojave Desert changed his life, perspective and began his relationship with running. We explore what mindful running really is and how it can be artful like music and dance, and what can be invited through this ancient movement practice. Rio speaks on learning from injury, transitioning from the road to the trails and his vision for running in community and helping more underprivileged youth get out of the city and into the trails. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/into-the-well/support

Hey Running Friends! Today's episode is really short. Just a quick word on having a running mantra in your back pocket for getting through a hard run.In the podcast I talk about a book called "Mindful Running" by Mackenzie L. Havey. I refer to her as Mackenzie HARVEY, which is wrong (not sure why, maybe Havey was autocorrected to Harvey and I just read what I had without thinking). Anyway, check out my reviews of the book below. Running has been vital for Michelle Quirk as she's grieved her father, who lost his life to cancer in 2012. It also helps her deal with the trauma she endures daily as a pediatrician. Think about it. Not every child comes through the clinic door with the sniffles. She sees kiddos who are terrified to see a doctor. Little ones with terminal illnesses. Tiny tots who are clearly being neglected and abused at home. So Michelle, like many of us, works out her problems through running. She took that one step further a couple of years ago, when she began her running coaching business, Mindful Marathon. It's geared toward helping professionals cope with stress, anxiety, depression and, one issue that's running rampant in the healthcare industry: burnout. ************************************ This episode was presented by DUI & Behavioral Health Counseling Centers, which has offices here in northern Illinois – in Sycamore, Plano, and Crystal Lake. Einsendeschluss: 29.05.-----------Foto: Ruben ElstnerMusik: The Artisans Beat - Man of the Century See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

For many many people, running is more than just a sport. It’s time alone, it’s meditation, it’s pushing your body and mind to its limits or it’s connecting with a tribe of people who love it too. It might be all of those things and more. For one runner and sports journalist Tina Chantrey, running is a coping mechanism and stress reliever that has pushed Tina through difficult times – getting divorced and navigating a new life as a single mum. Whether you’re a novice runner or a marathon lover, this interview with Tina will highlight just how important it is to find what it is that releases stress within you and practice it day after day. If you’ve been intrigued about how running might be able to help you but aren’t sure how to keep it up or get started, listen in for lots of tips on what you may be doing wrong. It all starts with reframing your thoughts about what “running” is and what you’re expecting of yourself…

In this episode, we chat with Elinor about self-compassion, stress and the effects it has on our body, practicing mindful running, bringing together women through running retreats and more. Introduction: Elinor Fish has worked in the travel, tourism and running industries since 1999. The Canadian ex-pat, who now calls Colorado home, has long been an avid trail runner, writer and champion for women’s participation in the sport. She spent four years as the managing editor of Trail Runner magazine, during which she founded Run Wild Retreats + Wellness in 2010. Throughout this time, Elinor’s personal health challenges led her to a deeper mindfulness practice. She soon recognized ways to blend running with mindfulness to create one powerful practice that could alleviate the effects of at-times debilitating chronic auto-immune diseases. Questions we ask Elinor include: How did you get your start in running? For four years, you were the managing editor of Trail Running Magazine. What was this experience like? It was working at Trail Running Magazine that you founded Run Wild Retreats + Wellness. What was your basis for developing these retreats? Why did you feel the need to create the retreats? A major part of Mindful Running is reducing stress. What are some of the positive impacts that you have witness from those who attend the retreats? During this time, you went through some personal health struggles that led you to develop your own practice with mindfulness. Would you mind telling us about this time? What does mindfulness practice look and feel like for you? How would you suggest listeners develop their own mindfulness practice in day-to-day life? We would love to hear more about how you blend mindfulness and running. Frustration and mindfulness? Tell us what a typical day at the Run Wild Retreat might involve. What is next for Run Wild Retreats + Wellness? What is currently making you thrive? What advice would you give your younger self? What does being a Strong Runner Chick (or Mindful Runner Chick) mean to you? How can listeners connect with you (or sign up for a retreat!) --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/strong-runner-chicks/support
Sarah and co-host Dimity commune with Mackenzie Havey, author of Mindful Running. Mackenzie defines and demystifies mindfulness, telling how years of overtraining and repeated injuries had sucked the joy out of running—but how mindful running has restored it. This mother of a baby recounts how she gained a new appreciation for mindfulness when she was pregnant. She and Dim bond when Mackenzie equates mindfulness training to reps in a weight room, while it all clicks for SBS when Mackenzie talks about how thoughts can be like passing cars. The author shares some simple steps to get mindful, and how following them can result in a calmer run. The ladies talk about the value of acknowledging the hurt (burning lungs or quads, anyone??) we experience while running—and how to bring a curiosity to those sensations. And, yes, we openly acknowledge the irony of talking about mindful running on a podcast we suspect most of you will listen to while, yup, running. In the intro, Dimity tells the tales of her recent trip to Rancho La Puerta with her (generous!) mother and two sisters—and the duo discuss the possibility of a future AMR Retreat at the resort spa! #2019RLP.
