Have you ever wondered if you're a "real runner" because you take walk breaks? Dr. Michelle Quirk, pediatrician and running coach, sets the record straight in this episode, sharing why walk intervals are not only acceptable but beneficial for all runners. Her thoughtful advice for beginners—remember your "why," start slow, and focus on effort rather than pace—offers a refreshing foundation for anyone lacing up for the first time. The conversation with Dr. Quirk delves into practical wisdom that both novice and experienced runners will appreciate. She explains how to distinguish between normal muscle soreness and potential injuries through timing, location, and relieving factors—information that could save you from sidelining yourself unnecessarily or pushing through a genuine problem. For parents, Michelle offers sage advice on introducing children to running in a healthy, sustainable way that keeps the focus on fun rather than competition.Following our expert interview, we're treated to emotional firsthand accounts from three Boston Marathon finishers, including two who completed their Six Star journey at this iconic race. Their descriptions of the overwhelming crowd support and the profound feeling of turning onto Boylston Street for the final stretch will give you goosebumps. As one runner put it: "If you ever want to feel like a rock star, run the last half mile of the Boston Marathon."The episode wraps with our comprehensive race report, highlighting achievements from runners across the country and around the world—from PR-breaking performances at the London Marathon to the quirky "Reverse London Midnight Marathon" where participants run the course backward starting at 12:01 AM. Whether you're training for your first 5K or your sixth major marathon, this episode offers both practical guidance and the inspirational stories that make our running community so special. She's talking about why she's running and who she's running for as well as touching on some ways she prepared for her first race. We also have some concerns for the Athletes With Disabilities at the runDisney races this year, which Theresa has some personal experience with. Melissa became a runner 11 years ago, after a trip to Disneyland and being inspired by seeing all the runners celebrating their finish of the Disneyland Half Marathon at the parks. She signed up for a Disneyland 5k in 2009, and then followed up with her first half Marathon in 2010. Since her first 5k, she has completed several Marathons, and has dove into the world of triathlon. She enjoys running and triathlon because she likes to challenge herself and see what mentally and physically she can overcome. She uses running and activity as a way to decompress after work and help clear her mind. In her opinion, there is nothing better than a sunset run after a long day at work.

This week, Mousetalgia welcomes Jeffrey Epstein to the show to talk about D23 past, present and future! We look back at the launch of D23 - Disney's official fan club - over 7 years ago, and then discuss other current D23 happenings, including the "Fanniversary" events celebrating Beauty and the Beast and other upcoming opportunities for club members. We also host a Mousetalgia therapy session for a listener who, having fallen in love with Disneyland, has a hard time resisting comparing it with Walt Disney World and feeling like WDW falls short. Is it okay to compare the two resorts, or should Disney fans hold a special place for all the parks in their hearts? Also, listener reports on Shanghai Disneyland and Steakhouse 55, and two runDisney reports - one on last week's Disneyland Half Marathon weekend, and one on runDisney's recent virtual races. Plus - Tim Burton, Disney-themed t-shirts... and more.
The team talks about the recent Disneyland Half Marathon weekend, where Murray ran the 5k and Danie ran the Half Marathon itself. Main Street Electrical Parade is the next topic. Then two items from Disney California Adventure are discussed - the new Fun Pass/Annual Pass for just that park and Tower of Terror leaving soon. The end brings about "blue sky" ideas - anything is up for grabs for the future of Disney.
Calling all fans of Disney, Running, or Inquiring Minds about how much protein to eat. We have the episode for you. You'll hear all about the MAJOR pixie dust my son William received at Typhoon Lagoon, the best places to run at Disney World, where to eat at DW, what rides you must ride, and the resorts my husband Robert and I recommend. Becky Kotsifas is back to tell us about her third half marathon this year at Disney, the Disneyland Half Marathon, and compares it to other runDisney races she has run. Serena Marie, RD, talks all things protein and then Serena and I discuss our training for the Chicago, NYC, and Philadelphia Marathons. Want to know about how you too can have the gift of running be a part of your lifestyle? Head over to therunninglifestyle.com/join and you'll receive the 11 Strategies to Live the Running Lifestyle. Special thank you to Jeff Galloway and ElliptiGo for getting me ready to run the Chicago, NYC, and Philadelphia Marathons. ElliptiGo is like a an elliptical machine/bike that you ride outside. It gives you a great runners high (and I mean HIGH) and lets you “run” without the impact! William Gormley · How to experience the ultimate pixie dust at Disney World, which is opening a park. William Gormley shares with you how he was “Big Kahuna” and what that means. And how you can be Big Kahuna someday. Robert Gormley · What resorts to stay at and running around the Boardwalk, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom (don't do it!), and Port Orleans Riverside and Port Orleans French Quarter · New restaurants we tried · The restaurant which is the best value when it comes to Crab Legs · The number one tip when eating at Be Our Gust · Favorite restaurants we go to every time · What dessert NOT TO MISS at Boma · What rides not to miss at the parks · What great tips we received from The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World by Bob Sehlinger and Len Testa. The big takeaways when it comes to the interviews with William and Robert Gormley is that you need to get to a park early, if you want to be able to open it. We strongly recommend running at the Port Orleans Riverside and Port Orleans French Quarter Resorts. Some restaurants not to miss are Cape May Cafe, Be Our Guest, Boma, Sanaa, California Grill, Wolf Gang Puck Express, and Narcoose's. Our favorite rides include Kilimanjaro Safari, Expedition Everest, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Splash Mountain, Toy Story Midway Mania, Soarin, and Test Track. We booked directly with Disney World this trip. When we don't go through the Disney World Reservations to book our trip, we have been very happy and satisfied with David's Vacation Club Rentals. Through David's service, we have been able to pay a moderate hotel's price, but stay at Deluxe Resorts including Bay Lake Tower, Beach Club, Animal Kingdom Kidani Village (with a savannah view) and the Boardwalk Resort. Every time we have requested a certain type of room, David's team has been able to come through for us (thank you!). Becky Kotsifas · Discusses her year of Run Disney - Princess Half, Tinkerbell Half, Disneyland Half, and Wine and Dine Half · The special medals Becky has received for running multiple races · Celebrating the 10 year Anniversary of runDisney · Highlights of the Disneyland Half Marathon · The signs along the course · The breakdown of men vs. women in the Disneyland Half · Why the Wine and Dine Half Marathon is a favorite among many people Serena Marie, RD, · Why you need protein even if you're not lifting a lot of weights · Serena's explanation of how much protein a runner needs & how to do it · How to estimate your protein needs depending on your running distance and goals · How to estimate a portion of protein if you are a man or woman · Where to go for a list grams of protein in foods · What are great sources of protein The big take-aways from our talk with Serena are to know how much protein you need based on your goals, weight, and distance. If you're training for for 5ks/10ks or recreational running aim for ~1 gram of protein per kilogram. If you're training for marathons should aim for ~1.2-1.4 gm/kg protein. If you're training for endurance events in conjunction to heavy strength training regimen ideally aim for ~1.6-1.7 gm/kg. Go to https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/eat/fd_exch.htm (which is actually a site through the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, but refers to the American Dietetic Association food exchanges) to get a list of how much protein is in a serving. You can estimate protein by looking at your palm. If you're a woman, your palm can be estimated to be a 4-5 ounce portion of high biological value protein (meat, fish, eggs). If you're a man, your palm will represent 5-6 ounces of high biological value protein. Each ounce of animal protein has 6 grams of protein. Please say a prayer, send positive intentions, that Serena's knee gets better. Another way to support our efforts is to donate to Team Kari and Serena Run NYC and Chicago for Action for Healthy Kids. Every dollar makes a difference in helping a child eat healthier foods and move their bodies. Next week we're going to hear from Dr. Vinny Kripalu, MD, an internist who practices an integrated medical approach and is a fellow marathoner. Please subscribe to the podcast through iTunes, Stitcher, or whatever podcast app you use. You never know when a surprise episode comes up and by subscribing, you won't miss it. :-)
Inside The Mouse Castle: Disney News, Information and Commentary
After technical difficulties and busy travel schedules squashed last week's show, Tim and Anthony are back for another go-round Inside The Mouse Castle. We start off with Tim's review of Walt Disney, the new American Experience documentary airing this week on PBS. It's an earnest, if somewhat biased, depiction of Walt's life that plays up the darker elements of his personality and career. Fans will appreciate the rare photographs and archival footage, while Disney history buffs will question how the film presents Walt's relationship with his father, his actions during the 1941 studio strike and the assorted psychobabble spouted by some of the "experts" who try to crawl inside Walt's head. Here's what else we have in this week's episode: A live action Frozen stage show will replace the long-running Disney's Aladdin--A Musical Spectacular production in the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure...and the Internet loses its mind. We now know for certain that Disneyland and Walt Disney World will break ground on their Star Wars-Land expansions next year. That means the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, the popular holiday light show at Disney's Hollywood Studios will blink out after this year. Director Brad Bird has let it be known that work on Incredibles 2 is moving along briskly, so well that it will likely be released before the other Pixar sequel, Cars 3. That still means it probably won't be out until 2018, but any news about The Incredibles is good news. Disney Infinity 3.0 will be available on Apple TV after the streaming service undergoes an extensive update in October. Some participants in this month's Disneyland Half-Marathon complained of incorrect corral assignments, suggesting there are proof-of-time security issues with RunDisney and TrackShack. There will no longer be chanting allowed at Walt Disney World. Unofficially, of course. Enjoy! www.TheMouseCastle.com
In episode 57 of Beyond the Berm, Matt tells about running in the latest Disneyland Half Marathon, we look at how we and Disney have changed over the last few years, we talk about Star Wars Force Friday, a book by Marty Sklar, and more!
Ellen Rohr, a business coach and motivational speaker, who was the featured guest and Runner of the Week last week, comes back on the show to share more stories of how running has impacted her life in so many positive ways. Ellen and I discussed: Why she loves using a metronome and how its helped her hips How running is the river that threads her best friend and her together How being in pain running her last marathon was one of her favorite marathons How confidence comes from doing things for a long time What a race/event makes her want to do How I (Kari Gormley) started running Why choosing clothes are so important How running keeps on reminding her of the beginners path and how running gives us opportunity to learn and grow The top take-aways with part two of our conversation: When you get injured, it's feedback that you aren't doing something correctly and learn from it. How the more you do something, the more confident you become. There is no such thing as bad running weather, just inappropriate running clothes. If you'd like to find out the 11 strategies to live the running lifestyle, please head over to www.therunninglifestyle.com/join and find out. :-) Need to buy some books, or perhaps some general supplies? There are many great marathons held on Fridays or Saturdays such as Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Baltimore, Fargo, North Dakota, and Akron, Ohio. He is looking forward to his trip, but has some fears when it comes to running on a treadmill in Cairo and running on the streets of Abu Dhabi when it's over 100 degrees. Charlie will be back on the show next week to share how his six marathon distance runs across six continents in only a week went. The Mouse Castle Lounge Podcast: Disney News and Interviews, Cocktails and Conversations
We hope you're having a great Labor Day weekend. Tim is at the Disneyland Resort this weekend, not only for Force Friday--did you get any cool Star Wars Merchandise?--but also here for the 10th anniversary of the Disneyland Half Marathon. His guest in the Lounge today has nothing to do with either of those events, but you're really going to like him. He's Disney Legend Bill "Sully" Sullivan and you're going to hear part two of Tim's conversation with Sully about his nearly 40 years with Disney. Sully started out as a ticket taker on the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland in 1955 and finished his career in 1994 as vice president of the Magic Kingdom in Florida. Between those times, he got to know both Walt and Roy Disney. He worked at the Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley in 1960 and the New York World's Fair in 1963 and '64. Last week, Sully told us much about those adventures and in part two of our conversation, he picks things up in October 1971 as Walt Disney World is closing in on its Grand Opening. Sully also shares some of his fondest memories of both Walt and Roy, as well as the day he got the biggest surprise of his career: the letter from Michael Eisner telling him he'd been named a Disney Legend. It's part two of Tim's conversation with Sully Sullivan in The Mouse Castle Lounge. www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://themousecastle.libsyn.com/rss
Mousetalgia reports from the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend, and Dave and Becky talk about the runDisney Expo, Jeff Galloway's running philosophy, preparing for a race, a description of the 10K course, and dealing with a sudden illness at the park. Then, Dave reviews "Marceline," a documentary about Walt's childhood hometown held at the Walt Disney Family Museum with some discussion with the filmmakers and actors. Does this film about a small town in the midwest maintain the Disney magic? We also discuss the potential impact that Marceline may have had upon a 5 year old Walt. Plus - Walt's home movies; Mousetalgia is named a "Best Disney Podcast;" Jeff gets a taste of the caviar dream of being a bestselling author; and if you get sick at Disneyland, we discuss the best attractions to be stuck on!

This episode the guys takes a look at the latest Disneyland Rumours. Frozen Christmas stuff in DCA? Marvel Rockin Roller Coaster? Star Wars destroying Toon Town Alderaan style? We discuss it! Plus we our bi-weekly visit to the Main Street Newsstand. Main Street Newsstand Finding Nemo Subs lagoon is refilling up! Also just as a reminder - "Friday, September 26th is the last working day of Fiscal Year 2014 for the cubicle worker that publishes the planning calendars, and thus that shows up as the end date for this fake "refurbishment" that is really just a permanent closure." (Emphases - disgeek) Disneyland Half Marathon is this weekend. Adventure Trading Company bids farewell Anna and Elsa's Boutique D23 Tix now Available Disneyland Mobile Site Feature - Latest Disneyland Rumours - August 2014 From Miceage.com The new Star Wars expansion would be accessed via the western flanks of Fantasyland beyond the old Skyway station, taking over the Big Thunder Ranch area and extending to the north beyond the railroad tracks. Where Toontown is now would be more expansion and a large show building, not unlike New Orleans Square with the show buildings for Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean stashed unseen behind it. Now that plan has an E Ticket to go along with the meet n' greets, in a proposal to put a Marvel themed version of Rock N' Roller Coaster tucked into the parking lot currently between Tower of Terror and Luigi's Flying Tires. Taking a cue from the successful Frozen Summer Fun promotion they pulled together very quickly out at Walt Disney World, a new Frozen offering will be shoehorned into DCA for this Christmas season. Setting up in, you guessed it, the backlot area of DCA's Hollywoodland, the characters from Frozen will be moving in for the holidays. An indoor ice rink and character meet n' greet will be installed in Stage 17, while next door the Muppets will go on hiatus (again) and the MuppetVision theater will be repurposed for a small stage show and Frozen sing-along. Frozen décor and set pieces will be plopped down around these two venues and take over some of the existing Mad T Party facilities, and the existing Studio Store nearby will be turned into a Frozen merchandise headquarters. This will create a Frozen miniland of sorts in DCA, and should help take the pressure off the Frozen frenzy currently found in Fantasyland.
