This week my friends Mary Ann Mariani, Amy DeFehr and I talk about the things we liked about 2024 like road trips, writing a book and appreciating the flow that comes with getting better at something. Then there was learning new things like Canva to help with work and Lagree for exercise. Looking into 2025 with the words we've each chosen to guide us: amplify, alive and abide. It was an inspiring conversation amongst friends. Consider starting a small group yourself. Let's get pumped for Episode 111 of Opportunity Knocks “Building Strength through Teamwork and Community” featuring Lisa Solomon, the Founder of The Studio (MDR), a Lagree studio with five locations in LA and a sixth coming in 2025. This is a special episode, given that it is 111 - an angel number representing good luck, opportunity, confidence and profound transformation. Such a perfectly fitting number for my dear friend Lisa, who I had the joy of facilitating with at an incredible Women's Wellness Event here in LA last week. After falling in love with the Lagree method workout and out of love with her career as an executive in the music industry, Lisa opened The Studio (MDR) during the peak of the recession. They beat all the odds and have been booked and busy since day one, more than a decade ago. There are many golden nuggets from my chat with Lisa, including:
Let's talk about debt with Lisa Michaud. Lisa has been an active real estate investor for over 12 years. With experience investing in 3 different provinces, she has been involved in everything from house hacking to short-term rentals, rent-to-own, self-storage, and now focuses on multifamily residential properties. Lisa is all about holistic, whole-life success, and a big part of her “why” is her belief that generating wealth and cultivating purpose play a role in happiness and wellness, and that it is an opportunity everyone deserves.Lisa lives in beautiful Vancouver, BC with Troy and their 6 year old daughter Sonoma. In her spare time, Lisa loves traveling, wine-touring, going to Lagree classes, talking about real estate and chasing her daughter around the seawall and city.In this episode we get ‘into it' with Lisa about:Her journey from over 30K of unsecured debt to millions. What it means to be rich Having things vs. creating wealth What it means to have good debt vs. bad debt, Paying off debt and more! Follow Lisa on Instagram or visit her website.

When Ariel Swan is in the room, you feel her presence. Her laugh is big and infectious, her speech cadence is quick and lively. A long-time professional dancer, she started her career at 18-years-old, traveling the world performing on cruise ships and doing commercial gigs. Eventually, she became a pilates & Lagree instructor and cofounded popular long weekend R&B dance party Slow Jam Sundays. Then, in June 2019, Ariel opened Jaybird, an infrared yoga & pilates studio, with her business partner Barbie Bent. Ariel was born & raised in North Vancouver, a fearless and adventurous child in perpetual motion. She was a rhythmic gymnast, until an injury sidelined her. She found her way back to movement through dance and began to pursue a career, landing her first professional gig as a BC Lions cheerleader and creating a modern burlesque dance movement with friends. Another injury ended her dance path, a challenging identity crisis for her. But she, again, found her way back to movement through pilates and teaching at Lagree West. A call from her sister, an actor, prompted Ariel to move to LA to dog sit; there, she went to a few infrared movement classes. She and Barbie began to talk about bringing the concept to Vancouver, but Ariel hesitated—then pushed through her fear to make it happen. Jaybird now has studios in Vancouver and Toronto (with a second one coming) and plans to expand into the US.In this conversation, we talk about the responsibility she took on at a young age; where her love for dance comes from; how picking up choreography is a matter of letting go & trusting; what she learned about herself traveling the world as a cruise ship dancer; her relationship with her body as someone who practices embodiment as a career; the story of Jaybird; her love from Peru and the retreats she's hosted there; how her relationship to fear has evolved over time; and much more. This week on #WeGotGoals, I'm speaking with the woman behind [solidcore], Anne Mahlum. And before that, she started the not-for-profit Back on My Feet, and soon to come, she's heading up her new venture in the fitness space: Ambition. One thing I noticed the first time I met Anne Mahlum on a lobby bench at the opening of Chicago's first [solidcore] is this: She fills up a room with her presence - and the name of that presence is the same name of her coming in 2023 concept: ambition.Ambition. A word that is often spat out of the mouths of those speaking about women along with competitive or loud. In a Harvard Business Review article that featured the findings from interviews with high achieving women, “ambition” was, for these women, associated with egotism, selfishness, self-aggrandizement, or the manipulative use of others for one's own ends. For men? Ambition was considered a necessary and desirable part of their lives.Anne Mahlum is not shy about her ambition, that is one indisputable truth about her. She is not shy about her goals, either. She shared here on this very podcast a few years ago her goal to have 100 [solidcore] locations open by the end of 2020. We all know what 2020 did to business goals, but if you google her, you'll find that same goal listed in a litany of publications.I get the sense from her that she's growing and learning every day, personally and professionally. She's had challenges as she seeks out her big goals - she shares pretty openly about all of it - from disordered eating that followed her family's split. She was injured severely in a 2019 jet ski accident that led to several surgeries that you'll hear about this week. She was sued by Sabastian Lagree, the founder of the Lagree method and that lawsuit (and the countersuit by [solidcore]) was settled privately. She was sued by an ex-boyfriend who claimed to be co-owner of [solidcore]. That was also settled. In our interview this week, Anne also mentions what she calls a “hit piece” by buzzfeed, which shared interviews from 25 current and former [solidore] employees. Through all of it, I get the sense that her ambition is more her blessing than her burden. So why not name your business that: Ambition. With all of that said, I know one thing for sure, she's a human with a singular focus. She has her sights set on a goal probably two or three goals ahead of what she tells me in this interview, and she absolutely believes in her ability to achieve it.Resources:Anne on Instagram[solidcore][solidcore] on InstagramAmbition's websiteWomen and ambition, HBRFundraising for Ambition by Anne MahlumA photo of Anne as founder of Back on My FeetBack on my feetOne of the success stories from Back on My FeetHer reaction to a piece about stepping down as CEO from [solidcore]
Arlene is a fitness instructor specializing in Lagree, as well as formerly being crowned Miss Bakersfield. She shares what God has tought her primarilly with living in California during the pandemic, that although community is very important, it's also important to be alone and learn about yourself and focus on doing the things your love and are passionate about.
We could talk all day about the pressure of being discovered as a teenage model like Erin Heatherton, co-founder of Chicago-based studio Resistance Chicago, was. She was scouted on the street at 17 and would go on to walk in high fashion shows as well as Victoria's Secret Fashion shows. The pressure comes from being expected to stay that way - a teenage girl - for your foreseeable future.Erin recently wrote about it, and I'll quote her instead.“At the peak of my career, there was constant pressure to stay very thin. Even early on, maintaining industry standards was a full time job, but it was possible for my body type at the time. I took my fitness seriously and was motivated by the validation I received … As I got older, I continued to work hard, but the “fit” version of my body looked different. I built my career and my self image on positive feedback that came naturally when I was younger and the foundation crumbled when that feedback turned negative. Shoots and agency meetings that were once fun and rewarding felt depleting and incredibly taxing on my self esteem. I was training twice a day and religiously monitoring the quality of my diet, but my body would simply not return to its 18-year-old shape.”We gloss over this on this week's episode of #WeGotGoals, but before leaving New York City and moving back to Chicago, Erin started to hate fitness. It had become a thing she had to do to whip her body into the shape that was being demanded of her. It was not a thing she enjoyed anymore. So she spent a year not working out, not smoking and getting back in touch with herself. So when she went to her first Lagree class, it was - as she describes it - humbling. I would say that a humbling experience can knock you off your path, but for her, it was the beginning of a couple of special things: a new relationship with fitness that was healthier and a new relationship with her person. In the middle of her journey to rediscover fitness in a more joyful way, Erin also found Karol Kocemba, who would become her co-founder at Resistance and her fiancé.They dated, they Lagree'd, and he fell for the fitness modality too and started nudging her to making this passion a business.I've taken a couple of classes at resistance and the environment is comfortable, small and attentive. The focus is on form and Erin is a born instructor. On the episode, you'll hear her describe the nerves she felt before teaching, but I think she does all of the things that are very important for a good class. She makes you do hard things with a smile. She praises loudly, but corrects quietly. She greets new students at the door instead of waiting for them to wander in. She tells me on the episode that feels empowered now by serving people and making them feel good about their bodies and the strength they feel. Contrast that with making herself miserable to maintain an impossible standard that's sold as “beauty.”I'm excited for you to hear the story of Erin and Karol's studio and of finding each other. Workout Woman, aka Ashley Fern (disco_infern0), is back to share her latest workout report. Ashley starts off by clearing the air from the last Workout Woman ep - let's just agree to disagree that, no matter how Lagree is pronounced, it's a hard AF workout. Aleen then reads a listener submitted DST Win (new & improved NSW) about not comparing yourself to others in workout classes, then she and Ashley share their own, which are about getting back into the kitchen and waking up before the sun to get that workout in. Ashley then gives her first-timer workout report of the highly recommended Orangetheory Fitness. From the vibes to the quality of the class, they break it all down. Don't forget to submit your recommendations for workout classes for Ashley to try by dming @dietstartstomorrow or emailing dst@betches.com.
Workout Woman aka Ashley Fern (@disco_infern0) is back! This week, Ashley's report is about reformer workouts. The episode kicks off with Non-Scale Wins of the week - Aleen's was a long time coming and Ashley's is about hitting a big workout milestone. Next, we read a listener NSW about using the podcast to help them get through a tough health struggle, which was the result of not prioritizing their health in the right way. Then, Ashley gives her workout report on Solidcore, SLT, BODYROK and Lagree. Ashley gives us the rundown on how all of the studios differ from each other and throughout the convo, Aleen shares her experience with reformer classes. We then talk about how sore these workouts make you and whether or not they're worth the price.
In this episode, we sit down and have a chat with Linda. With three studios in California, she's an entrepreneur and owner of Club Lagree. She's passionate about life and what she does. Her finner du oss i Oslo, og du kan teste 3 klipp for 400 kr inkludert treningssokker. www.corebalance.no Vårt søsterstudio i Stockholm heter Be Core www.becore.se See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This workout is known as the Lagree Method. You will learn much more about this method and why it will be a game changing workout you can now even do in your own home. Welcome to the 22nd episode of Amplify Clearwater Show, powered by 13th Ave Media! We are very excited to take you on a journey to learn more about all of the incredible businesses, nonprofits, and community leaders. In this episode, we are featuring Business Developer, Sue LaGree at Sea Dog Cantina! Sue LaGree has been working in promotions and business development for over 25 years, first as an attorney in Boston, then as a small/start-up business consultant. She first met Fred Forsley, owner of Shipyard and Sea Dog brands, several years ago, while living in New England. Sue moved to Safety Harbor 2 1/2 years ago, and last February, reconnected with Fred at her brother’s new restaurant- The Tiki Tavern, on Main St. in Safety Harbor. Sue was impressed with Fred’s Florida locations including Sea Dog in Treasure Island, Sea Dog Cantina in Gulfport, and Sea Dog Tap Room in Clearwater and with his locally made all-natural vodka brand “Ice Pik Vodka”, distilled right here in Florida. Through her connections in the professional athlete world (law school roommate is the agent for legendary football player Doug Flutie) she was able to get Ice Pik vodka and Sea Dog beer involved as a sponsor at a few prestigious Super Bowl events in Miami last year. From there, Fred asked her to join his team and promote his brands as he expands in the Florida market and beyond. Sue is particularly excited about their location at US 19 in Clearwater. “Our Tap Room in the back of the building remains open while we renovate the entire location –(formerly Cody’s Roadhouse Restaurant) into a Sea Dog Cantina which will feature hand-crafted margaritas, Mexican-inspired food and over 50 different types of tequilas, including some exclusive brands which can be sampled as flights at the Cantina in our VIP tequila room. The menu was created by our incredible, top-rated Chef, Greg Picard. Recently, St. Pete Foodies gave him a perfect 10 score for what they described as “Mexican food heaven”. “ Sue and her team can’t wait to introduce this food into our local community. Sea Dog Cantina is expected to open in late December and they look forward to inviting all Chamber members to a VIP ribbon cutting event! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/13th-ave-media/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/13th-ave-media/support

Our exercise series continues as we highlight the benefits of Pilates with PDX powerhouse, Abby Parker! Settle in as she shares her story of strength and resiliency, culminating into a love for fitness. Before we jump into the show I want to make sure to remind those of you in the Portland area to come out and see me at Athleta in the Pearl District! I am doing an awesome workshop event there to help you embrace the power of your mind for fitness. It is February 17th at 8:30 AM and you can click this link to RSVP on Eventbrite. Abby is here today helping us continue our exercise series to expose us to the amazing variety of options we all have for moving our bodies every day. It’s all about finding something we LOVE to do, something that feels good and feels right to our bodies. Abby is here to help us understand a little more about pilates and to help us see the true beauty in this exercise. You HAVE TO head over to Abby’s Instagram and check out her photos. They are incredibly inspirational...you can’t help but feel motivated to get moving and find commitment to daily movement when you see her beauty! Abby's Road to Fitness Abby’s fitness journey is truly amazing. She is a New Jersey girl and reflects back on her mother enrolling her in dance lessons at the age of 13. Ballet quickly became all consuming for her. She would stretch and practice daily, head in to New York every weekend to compete and be exposed to other dancers, and at 17, decided she wanted to pursue dance professionally. After many terribly critical dance auditions for professional companies, she was finally accepted to the American Repertory Ballet out of Princeton, New Jersey. Though she loved dancing full time, she quickly learned the harsh realities of the profession when all the female dancers were lined up in front of the mirror and told to pick out everything that was wrong with themselves and to dedicate themselves to “slimming down.” Abby is 5 foot 8 inches tall and only weight 118 pounds but was told to lose 15 or 20. She went to extreme dieting and cut herself down to 108 pounds in 3 months. But her energy levels showed the damage and she ended up in the hospital after collapsing in a rehearsal. She was told she had to begin eating again and as a result, ate excessive amounts of food but would feel extreme guilt and throw it all up. These two years with the company were full of big changes for Abby, but in 2015, at 20 years old, she discovered Moxie Contemporary Ballet whose tagline stated, “We support healthy bodies in dance.” She packed up everything she could fit in a suitcase and flew to Portland, Oregon to practice with this company while staying in a dorm room on the campus of Portland State University for 4 weeks. At the end of that period, it was time for the director to select 7 out of the 100 dancers to stay with the company. Little did the dancers know, the funding fell through and the director chained up the doors to rehearsal and fled the state. So Abby began frantically searching for a job, staying on the couch of a friend, and doing everything she could to make herself marketable. She finally got a job in a call center in downtown Portland and was less than thrilled about the work she was doing. But Abby didn’t give up on her passion. She still worked out every single day, did deep research into dance opportunities in the Northwest, and she wouldn’t let her dream die. She even joined PDX Contemporary Ballet part-time to continue dancing while working. In March of 2016, her mentor and superior at her job was murdered and the call center was shut down and she was out of a job once again. She knew with her dancer mentality to be her best, that she had always loved fitness. So she was faced with a blank page on her computer and typed in, “What are the top 10 fitness gyms in Portland, Oregon.” And she clicked on one of the middle results...Firebrand Sports. She sent them a shot in the dark email letting them know she was great at answering phones, doing clerical duties, and that she really needed a job. She got a response that they didn’t need anyone answering phones...but they did need an instructor for Barre. Abby was completely caught off guard. She wasn’t even sure exactly what Barre was. She met Sarah, the owner of Firebrand Sports and they immediately connected. She auditioned, was hired, and became a certified Barre instructor. As she was doing that, she walked past another room at Firebrand, saw the Megaformers, and desperately wanted to know what that was and how she could do it. After trying a class, she immediately LOVED it and went down to California to become certified in Lagree. Back in Portland, Abby started teaching more and more while supplementing with other jobs and finally, Sarah thought she should become more involved with the runnings of the business. Throughout this process, she met her best friend Katie, who encouraged her to push herself to her full potential. They began working out a 6 AM together and became fast friends. Abby is continuing her career in fitness and is proud to see a bright future ahead of her despite the setbacks in her past. Abby’s story is a fantastic example of what it takes to make a true lifestyle change...support from the 4 cornerstones of fitness: Daily Movement Good Nutrition The Power of the Mind Community Connection Abby’s story is a beautiful example of the amazing change that can happen when these 4 things come together. It shows us the importance of releasing our obsessions with body shape and embracing body appreciation, health, and wellness into our lives. Fitness helped Abby get through some of the most difficult part of her life in a positive light. So what is Pilates exactly and what can a first-timer expect from giving it a try as a new way of moving their body? Abby explains that the Lagree Fitness Method is what Firebrand specializes in, which is a form of Pilates. You are using a total body fitness machine, or Megaformer, to enhance your movements and exercises. Lagree is a high intensity workout with low intensity on the joints. You can move all parts of your body in just 45 minutes. The beautiful thing about using a Megaformer is that you can modify any workout for more or less intensity. So regardless of your ability or experience level, you are able to feel fantastic. For those of us who have never experienced Pilates or Lagree before, Abby gives us a little insight into what the Megaformer machine is actually like. At the basics, it sort of looks like a bed with many springs and many different things to grab on to and adjust. You are always either pushing or pulling at all times and YOU control the springs of resistance on your machine. There are over 500 different moves that you can do on a Megaformer which gives both the instructors and the students loads of creative expression and flexibility in their workouts. “You have the ability to create a whole beautiful symphony of movements in your workout.” The resistance and intensity of the workout helps to target all those tiny little muscles that are difficult or impossible to reach with other workout methods. Abby says it isn’t just fantastic for strengthening your physical body, but also for strengthening your mind. These workouts challenge you in new and innovative ways and leave you feeling fantastic at the end. For both veteran and new Fitlandians, Christa focuses intensely on the power of the mind with Mind Zoning. You can work to create new neural pathways and thought patterns to change what we believe we can do and to build on our health and wellness simply with our subconscious mind. Pilates is great not only for your physical fitness but your mental fitness as well. Still not sure if Pilates of Lagree Fitness is a good fit for you? Abby offers a complementary class called Lunge and Learn to help you learn modifications, get started slowly, and learn more about the exercises in general before you drop in on a full class...so be sure to check that out! Also, if you are in the Portland area, be sure to check out a Lagree Fitness class in person at Firebrand Sports! Abby’s last minute tips for getting started: Just GO for it! (Starting is the hardest part!) Try a workshop to get started and feel comfortable Grab a friend for support and motivation Stay inspired and push your boundaries! Thanks to Abby for sharing her incredibly inspiring story with us and for giving us some insight to the world of Pilates and Lagree Fitness. We are so grateful to you and look forward to seeing you in our Fitlandia community in the future! Subscribe to the show, rate us and leave a review on iTunes or Sticker.
