"I was so afraid of being vulnerable, and afraid of having to look at other people and say what was going on. But when I did…it was the most incredible experience of my entire life." In December 2019, life was good for Kate Greene. She had a good job in Boston, she had just completed her first half marathon, and her New York-based family was planning a trip to visit for the holidays. Her younger brother, Ryan, who had struggled with drug addiction since they were young, was finally doing well. Kate and Ryan celebrated his birthday together over FaceTime. Everything was falling into place. Then, Ryan died of a heroin overdose. In this conversation, Kate talks about processing such a tremendous loss, and about leaning into running during that time. She explains how Ryan's death became the catalyst in getting her to run her first marathon, and about how getting involved with The Herren Project is what saved her when she needed it most. (Kate first heard about The Herren Project on the Ali on the Run Show. She went on to run the 2022 Boston Marathon for The Herren Project, and raised $14,000 for the organization in the process.) Chris Herren's story is one of profound struggle and eventual redemption. Addiction impacts millions of families in heartbreaking ways. I know this personally and through sitting with multiple clients who have been going through it with loved ones. This makes today's conversation about addiction and recovery on the Cracking Open podcast especially powerful. As a young basketball prodigy from Fall River, MA, Chris soared to fame with over 2000 points in high school, even gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated before graduating. However, his journey with addiction had already started to derail his life and his future as a professional athlete. Due to repeated failed drug tests, Chris was expelled from Boston College.Legendary coach Jerry Tarkanian reached out to Chris and gave him a second chance to play college basketball at Fresno State. He flourished there, leading him into the NBA, playing with the Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics. In secret though, Chris was still battling with alcohol and drug addiction, and basketball simply couldn't compete with the lure of alcohol, cocaine, and heroin. Despite his success on the court, his personal life spiraled out of control, culminating in an overdose and near-death experience in 2008. Through what he calls his "sherpas" – guiding lights on his journey – Chris fully embraced recovery, and has been sober since August 1, 2008. He continues to share his story through various platforms, including his bestselling memoir Basketball Junkie and the Emmy-nominated ESPN Films documentary Unguarded.Chris has dedicated his life to sobriety and creating a positive impact in the world. Through his company Herren Talks, he has reached over a million students and community members, sparking crucial conversations about substance use disorder and wellness. Chris's nonprofit Herren Project, empowers schools and communities to make healthy choices and supports families through recovery. Herren Wellness, established in 2018, offers residential health and wellness programs to support substance-free living.Chris's journey and this conversation around addiction recovery will resonate deeply with many of you. Even if you have not been personally touched by addiction, understanding this topic and its impact is crucial, making this conversation particularly significant.Love,MollyLearn more about Chris Herren and his work hereFollow Chris on InstagramMolly's next 3-month Cracking Open group coaching program starts in July 2024! You serve your Country- you Lead in the military (THREE tours in Afghanistan)- you better speak clearly. Problem may become, when you return home, you lose your voice... lose your purpose... pick up some addictive habits. My guest, Sean MacMillen, endured all of this, and a lot more- on his road to redemption. I had the privilege of meeting Sean at a spectacular Ultra running event, honoring our mutual friend Charlie Engle. I really had no idea going in that the bond that was formed among this group of "crazy" passionate endurance runners, would be so powerful. Sean's story is one of success, endurance, resilience, humor, and tragedy. The key to all of this- at least when I listened to Sean- is to literally keep moving a step at a time... a day at a time. Sean and I have sobriety in common, and that bond enabled us to connect. I remember when I spoke with Charlie Engle, a week prior to the incredible event supporting the Ashley Treatment Center in MD. Charlie said to me that Sean would be a great guest for my Podcast. Now I know that Charlie's right. This is a powerful episode with some really difficult topics covered. Pam Rickard has tackled more than 100 marathons and ultra-marathons. She's run across the Gobi Desert, and she was on a six-member Icebreaker Run team that ran across the United States to increase awareness of the importance of mental health. Pam exudes gratitude and joy, and calls herself "obnoxiously optimistic." But who wouldn't be after racking up 15 years of sobriety and tens of thousands of miles? She's made it her life's goal of helping others not only survive addiction, but thrive in sobriety. Through her work with Herren Project, she's raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to increase access to treatment and counseling for those who are suffering. In this complicated world, Pam keeps her mantras simple: Grow some good today. Do the next right thing. And even when the road ahead looks rocky, be grateful that you get to run on it. ************************************ This episode was presented by Mindful Marathon. Chris's love of basketball was forced on him in his childhood.  It was a very competitive household.  His brother was s very successful basketball star in high school, and Chris found himself following in his footsteps.  His father was an alcoholic, and Chris feels he inherited this troublesome trait. Chris Herren had a storied career in basketball.  He loved the culture of basketball & performing, but he didn't truly see this as a passion in his life. In his senior year, Herren was named the Boston Globe and Gatorade Player of the Year. He also was named to the McDonald's All-America Team.  He went to Boston College in 1994, where he failed multiple drug tests for marijuana & cocaine, which led to him being kicked out of college and the team.  He then transferred to Fresno State under coach Jerry Tarkanian.  Chris says that the first four years at Fresno State were his career-defining years.  He was at his best during that time but eventually fell back into his old habits. When Herren made it to the NBA, he eventually made his way back to Boston to play for the Celtics.  This is when his drug use hit its peak.  He also started to increase his painkiller use with pills like OxyContin, Vicodin & Percocet.  During playing abroad in Italy, he tried heroin for the first time.  He would play for NBA teams abroad in places like Iran, where the punishment for heroin usage and sale is death, and yet he would still take that risk to get high. He says looking back now that he was actually in worse shape during the season because the money he was getting paid at the time all went to drug use.   It hit a new low for Chris in 2007, he was charged with possession of heroin in the parking lot of a Dunkin' Donuts.  A year later, Herren overdosed on heroin and crashed into a utility pole. According to paramedics, he was allegedly dead for thirty seconds.  A lot of people in Chris' life at this point tried to get Chris some help, including fellow NBA player & Golden State Warrior Chris Mullen & his family, who got Chris into his first treatment center. When you go to Chris Herren's house, you won't see and memorabilia from his time in the NBA.  He is only proud of his time with Fresno State because he feels that this was the most passionate & level-headed he was playing basketball, in his entire career.  He says here that this was the only time of his career that he's proud of to this day.  After his recovery, he started a program called Hoop Dreams, where he has, so far, taught over 1000 kids basketball. After founding Hoop Dreams, he wrote a book in 2011 called ‘Basketball Junkie: A Memoir'.  In 2012, It was turned into a documentary called “Unguarded” and nominated for 2 Emmy Awards.  Chris Herren now devotes his time to the Herren Project.  He opened Herren Wellness, with one location in Virginia, one in Massachusetts, that specializes in health and wellness, and recovery for addicts.  They have placed over 5,000 people into treatment, 27 family online support groups a week.  The program requires honesty, transparentness, and the ability to not break from the routine.  A very inclusive approach that includes the whole dynamic of family & friends of the person in recovery. He describes the involvement of their therapists, life coaches, and other medical staff when they are accepting a new addict for treatment.  According to Chris, they are very involved in the recovery process, more so than similar programs.  This is his new passion and new drive in his life & hopes to reach & help as many people as possible.  This is Chris Herren in his own words, on Knockin' Doorz Down. It’s very difficult to describe in a short summary how much this episode means to us. Chris Herren joins us on the podcast today for an episode that is a must-listen. This is a conversation that could potentially change lives as many of his previous powerful speeches have done already.         Herren was a standout player at Durfee High School. At one point he was a Top 10 Nationally ranked player, Gatorade New England Player of the Year two years straight, Boston Globe Massachusetts Player of the Year three years straight, and 1994 McDonald’s All American. Unfortunately, along with the many accolades was a substance abuse problem. Herren was selected by the Denver Nuggets in the 1999 NBA Draft even after multiple failed drug tests during his college career. In our conversation today, Herren shares the struggles and dark times that eventually ended his basketball career and put his life in jeopardy.       The story of Chris Herren could have easily had a tragic ending, but he is now accomplishing things that are far more impressive than anything he has done on the court. Herren has been sober since August 1st, 2008. He’s become one of the most powerful and impactful voices for wellness and recovery, telling his story and raising awareness across the world. He has funded the non-profit Herren Project where Chris and his team help schools and communities make healthy choices while helping families through recovery. He also founded Herren Wellness that helps people live healthy, substance-free lives.       We love Chris Herren and can’t thank him enough for this time. His ability to connect with others and educate is beyond incredible. This episode is special to us and we know these conversations will reach someone in need. Chris’s words always do.     Thank you Chris Herren.        In the 16 countries that we are currently charting in, we hope that this conversation can reach at least one person. Our guest this week, Chris Herren has been sober since August 1, 2008. He had his first drink at the age of 12 and was addicted to drugs by the age of 18.   Growing up Chris's desire to fit in lead him to the partying scene in high school which he recalls as just, “doing what all the other kids were doing” or so he thought. Surprisingly, through the drinking and the drugs, his natural athleticism and his fear of failure are what pushed him to make a career of basketball. He worked hard to made it to the NBA, he had a wife and kids and almost lost it all. After being arrested, overdosing and a few other tragic events that unfortunately are common in the life of an addict, he finally hit his rock bottom and started to work towards getting sober. He is now a motivational speaker using the brand name Herren Talks allowing him to share his story and generate raw necessary conversations. He is also the founder of the Herren Project which helps individuals and family members find treatment or support. He is also proud of Herren Wellness which is a holistic residential treatment facility focused on assisting men and women with recovery. We know that food can play a huge role in healing our bodies and spirits, but what about exercise?    Finding yourself in a new professional sport in your 40s might not be as simple as changing your diet, but Joshua Stevens did it and hasn’t looked back.   Joshua is an ultra-marathon trail runner who ran his first 50K on his 44th birthday after being told he wouldn’t ever run again.    Before he was spending 24 hours on a treadmill for charity, he spent 24 years in the army, which led to two spinal surgeries and opioid addiction.    After reading Eat & Run and watching the documentary Unbreakable, Joshua tapped into his competitive nature and hasn’t stopped running since.    He joins Dotsie and Alexandra to share the painful journey that led him to finding peace on the trails and fostering empathy on his plate.    You’ll hear how he pulled himself out of addiction, went all-in on running, and went down the rabbit hole of plant-based eating.    Plus, hear how his performance has gotten even better since making the switch.    Don’t miss this inspiring episode!   What we discuss in this episode:   - What you can do if you were disappointed in the April 24th episode of the Amazing Race   - The tragedy that led to multiple surgeries and the Purple Heart for Joshua   - How Eat & Run and Unbreakable: The Western States 100 inspired Joshua to start ultra running when he wasn’t sure he’d be able to run again   - What happened to land Joshua dealing with opioid addiction, and what we’re getting wrong about the opioid conversation     - Did Joshua replace his addiction with running? Hear how he was able to quit cold turkey and why he says you must always be running toward something   - How eating plant-based fosters your empathy and why Joshua says it’s a way to “pay rent” back to the planet   - The amazing results Joshua saw in his performance and injuries after making the switch, and why he started by cutting out dairy   - Why Joshua ran on a treadmill for 24 hours to benefit the Herren Project and their film The First Day   - Joshua’s advice for anyone struggling with depression and addiction, including to read the powerful book What Made Maddy Run   - Follow Joshua on Instagram at @tumbleweedultra.   Connect with Switch4Good   - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ2toqAmlQpwR1HDF_KKfGg   - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Switch4Good/   - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/switch4good/   - Twitter: https://twitter.com/SwitchForGood   - Website: switch4good.org

Now she is a running ambassador and lifts up others who are trying to straighten out their lives. Pam came from not wanting to live to being so full of life, its amazing. Jim Mackert is 82 and on Sunday May 19, he completed his 42nd Cleveland marathon. The only one ever to run in and complete all 42.. I spoke with both Saturday at the running expo. Pam ran the 10K with her hubby Tom and her 80 year old father Bob Virant, while spreading the gospel of the Herren Project. Sadly, a 22 year old young lady, Taylor Ceepo collapsed and died very close to the marathon finish. She was a Walsh University soccer player who had just graduated. At the end of the podcast, I talk about this sad piece of news and honor her. Whether dealing with addiction, or the day to day problems of life, Herren advocates doing things the hard way. He believes kids need to learn to deal head-on with the real and difficult emotions life can bring, this will reduce the temptation to mask and avoid them with drugs and alcohol. Just like physical and mental resilience - emotional resilience is a key building block for success. Overcoming addiction has been his greatest obstacle. His sobriety, his greatest accomplishment. His dedication to helping others led him to found the Herren Project: to Support. Recover. Overcome. Sometimes the hard thing is asking for help. In this episode of Keep Moving Forward I interview former professional basketball player, recovering addict, and founder of The Herren Project, Chris Herren.   “Oftentimes we want to focus on the worst day when we need to focus on the first day.” Chris Herren, a man who almost died because of his substance abuse issues knows full well the importance of just focusing on that very first day. From the outside looking in, it seemed that he had it all. A professional basketball career playing for the illustrious Boston Celtics, a loving family...nothing could stop him. But to even function on a daily basis, Chris needed a combination of various drugs and alcohol. He justified that so long as he could play basketball, he was okay and that he had everything under control. But his lifestyle caught up with him in an earth shattering moment in 2008 where he almost lost his life, and he knew that he had to change for the sake of himself and the sake of his family.   Today, Chris is the founder of The Herren Project, aimed at providing assistance in taking the first steps toward recovery and a life of sobriety. The Herren Project offers resources including effective treatment, educational programs, and programs to increase awareness on the signs of addiction for the recovering addict as well as for their families. Through The Herren Project and his own experiences, Chris wants those trapped in their own battles to know it is okay to share their stories, and that there is always a way to make it right, so long as you give yourself a chance.   Speaking with Chris about his journey was an honor and I hope that you, too, are inspired by the incredible story of Chris Herren.   To learn more about him, you can visit http://www.theherrenproject.org/ and follow on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @ChrisHerren, @HerrenProject, @THPPurple, and @THPRuns. In his 20s, it seemed that David had it all. He swiftly climbed the corporate ladder and became an impressively successful businessman. However, beneath these successes David hid a dark secret: an addiction to alcohol, drugs, and food. At his lowest point, David weighed 320 pounds, he had a heart condition, 2 herniated discs, was pre-diabetic, and even eventually lost his 8 million dollar per year company.David knew that it was time for a change, so he turned himself around and found refuge in the sport of running. In 2006, he ran his first marathon and has now competed in a number of endurance competitions around the world. In the pursuit of restoring his own life David aims to help others do the same as the Ultra Endurance Ambassador for The Herren Project Runs initiative, created to help raise funds for and awareness about addiction. To raise money in another way for The Herren Project, David is even competing in an UFC match later this year. The only way David was able to come out of his addiction on the other side was because he constantly tested the limits of his own body. He found that if he was determined and driven enough, he truly could accomplish anything that he set his mind to. David continues to question what he is capable of on a daily basis and encourages others to do the same. His insight on life will leave you inspired to tackle any obstacles in your path and will make you see that you truly are capable of so much more than you ever imagined possible. Of course, all episodes will still be free both on iTunes and at http://keepmovingforward.us/, however, if you would like to ensure my future success, your support would be much appreciated.   “I don’t have to run, I get to run.” If you were to ask her, Pam Rickard would say that this is her life’s motto. After having running nearly stripped away from her at the pinnacle of her alcohol addiction, Pam discovered what it really meant to appreciate the sport upon which she based her wellness. As an alcoholic and an athlete for most of her life, Pam knew exactly how she could justify her daily addiction: so long as she could run at least 3 miles a day, she determined that she was okay. Attempting to ignore her problems, no matter how severe they became, Pam continued with her regular training. She even completed 7 marathons while still an active alcoholic.   After struggling for years with this heavy burden Pam decided to take control of her life. On April 17, 2006, she entered rehab at the Farley Center in Virginia and set her life in the right direction. In 2007, Pam ran the New York City Marathon as a fully sober athlete, and in 2009, she ran her first Boston Marathon, a long time goal of hers, solidifying the fact that she was successfully leading a clean life.   In leading a life as a newly sober runner, Pam found herself presented with the opportunity to work for an organization called The Herren Project, aimed at helping individuals just like herself. Chris Herren, a former professional basketball player and addict, whose story can be seen on the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary “Unguarded”, founded The Herren Project in 2011 to answer the calls of those in desperate need of help with their addiction and to increase education and public awareness on the issue of substance abuse. Pam was asked to head up a new side of this organization called THP Runs, aimed at raising awareness and raising funds for The Herren Project through the running of road races, marathons, ultra-marathons, and Spartan Races. Today, she is the director of this program and takes her role to heart, considering it to be a blessing in her life.   Pam’s energy is contagious and her positive outlook is sure to leave you inspired and ready to take on any challenge that comes your way. I hope that you enjoy my discussion with Pam Rickard.   If you would like to see more of Pam, you can follow her on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @PamRickard. Laurie McGarvey joins us on The SHAIR Podcast today. She is the founder of Recovery Management Solutions, and Laurie is currently fundraising for the Herren Project for this Boston 2016 marathon. Sober Date: June 13th, 2008 This episode was brought to you by AddictionUnscripted.com So Laurie, tell us about how your life is today because I'm assuming it's very busy, give us your daily routine and how you squeeze in recovery. Laurie: Okay. Let me just say that for me, this alcoholic recovery is my routine, so everything that I do, whether it's from when I get up in the morning and I get down on my knees and I say, "God's will, not mine, be done today," and that's how I have to move. When I don't stay with that routine, you know what? Quite honestly, I get negative. That's not who I've learned to be. I really try and stick with my daily routine of prayer and some type of ... I'm not real good at meditating because it's tough for me to sit still so I try and do more of a walking and gratitude list even before I move into the day, get into the workplace. I have 2 kids. I have a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old and a dog and they're very active. I try and keep something, like I use my phone a lot, and I keep everything, all my devotionals, all things like that, and I work through it throughout the day. I've learned to pause before I go into situations and it allows me to be who God needs me to be in that space rather than thinking about me and my ego. Omar: Got it. Absolutely. I totally got it. My next question was going to be how do you maintain your spiritual condition, the conscious contact with your higher power, but it looks like you already got that covered. Laurie: You know what? Yes, I have. I was taught well. However, I get stuck. I get stuck a lot, and I'll be honest, I've been stuck the past couple days, and I'm fighting my way back to my higher power and it's ironic that I happen to be doing this particular talk with you on this day. God has a reason for everything. There's a page in the Big Book that I live out of. I'll say, "This is really how I live out of," page 417, and it talks about acceptance. Acceptance is the answer to all our problems. There are no mistakes in God's world. You know, this alcoholic will resist reading that page and keep herself miserable for a good 48 hours and then finally I'll just say, "You know what? I'm just going to read the page," and everything goes. The spirit comes back. I'm still rebellious. 7 years sober and I'm still rebellious, so I just say to myself, "Laurie, keep coming back."
