I'm not sure how many stages of coping there are, but when Greg Hess told his wife and family they were moving to San Diego to start one of the first “nano breweries” in the country—I'd bet they ran through most, if not all of them. Probably added one or two. Harris' brother, Mike, had the idea in 2010 to go even smaller than a microbrewery. Launched a brewery in an 800 square-foot cubby hole. It may not have sounded like a “sure thing,” but it sure became one. Now Mike Hess Brewing is one of the most recognizable names in local craft beer, with tasting rooms in North Park (the OG, opened in 2013), O.B., Imperial Beach, Seaport Village, and Walnut Creek (where the Hess clan is from). For today's podcast, he joins us under the metallic tower of funfear that is the Emperor, SeaWorld's new roller coaster—the fastest, tallest, and longest plunge coaster in California. To commemorate the unveiling at the tap, Hess Brewing created the Emperor Hazy IPA, which will be served exclusively at the park. A portion of the proceeds for the beer will go to Penguins International to fund their conservation, education, and research efforts for the species. We also talk about the future of Hess, including the deal they signed to revive the iconic location where Alpine Beer Co. was created—a 4,000 square-foot space with a 5,000 square-foot patio. They'll carry on the tradition of having a beer wonderland in the nearby hills of San Diego. In “Hot Plates,” Mabel's Gone Fishing–an oyster and gin shop from the beloved local owners of The Rose natural wine bar—is making its long-awaited debut in North Park soon. L.A.'s famed breakfast tacos joint, Homestate Tacos, is landing in the Freeman Collective in South Oceanside, joining BlackMarket Bakery, Northside Shack, Corner Pizza, and Artifex Brewing. The Freeman project should be a hangout for a long, long while. In Sherman Heights, Cafe X is opened by a mother-daughter duo in the cultural hub that is 1835 Studios—a spot for food trucks, art galleries, community doings. And a while back we did the hunt for the best birria in San Diego, and El Prieto was our personal favorite—a food truck in the parking lot of a muffler shop by the border. Well, they just opened a second spot in Mira Mesa and you should go immediately. For “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” Troy pays homage to a San Diego icon of brunch and points you to the liquid obscenity that is the bloody Mary at Hash House A-Go-Go (pair it with the sage fried chicken with polenta and fried leeks). David recognizes the continuing evolution and betterment of San Diego mainstay, Crazee Burger, and Greg Hess hails the almighty Rocky's Crown Pub. See ya next week.

Welcome back to the Happy Half Hour! San Diego has long been a craft beer destination, but the city is also home to a burgeoning small-batch distillery scene. How has the pandemic affected these companies, since tasting rooms have to remain closed? We invited Michael Skubic, founder of Old Harbor Distilling Co., to talk about this. Michael got his start as a homebrewer when he was just 21, and after college he helped co-found Mike Hess Brewing. He later ventured on his own and founded Old Harbor in 2014, and he makes gin, rum, and coffee liqueur out of its East Village headquarters. In the beginning of the pandemic when sanitizer was in short supply, Michael teamed up with other companies in the San Diego Distillers Guild to produce and donate 10,000 gallons of it. Michael talks about the process of making sanitizer (he also studied biochemistry at Point Loma Nazarene University), how his business is doing, and some new products he’s launching. He also shares what makes his San Miguel Southwestern Gin stand apart from other botanical gins on the market—it involves a cool history lesson, so listen to find out! In Hot Plates, we talked about the new Tito’s Deli in Barrio Logan, which specializes in Puerto Rican tripleta sandwiches. Chef Andrew Bachelier announced that he’s leaving Jeune et Jolie, which Esquire named one of the best new restaurants in the country last year. We ended the segment with some good news: Addison, San Diego’s only Michelin-starred restaurant, is reopening in a new outdoor setting on August 1. Chef William Bradley announced this on his Instagram. For Two People for Takeout, Michael recommended Tribute Pizza. Troy said to get the birria to go at Fernandez Restaurant in Nestor. David is a big fan of the Roman-style pizza at the newly opened Gelati & Peccati, and my pick is the shoyu (soy sauce) ramen at HiroNori Craft Ramen. Thank you so much for listening and for staying with us. We want to hear from you. Is there a guest you want us to book on the show? A topic that should be explored? Need a recommendation for takeout? Do you have a question for Troy? Let us know. You can call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a voicemail, or if you’re shy, you can email us at happyhalfhour@sdmag.com.

Craft Brew News – 1/18/19Maryland’s Flying Dog Brewery Hopes to Release Cannabis-Infused BeerPending approval from the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission, Flying Dog Brewery and Green Leaf Medical Cannabis plan to release Hop Chronic IPA, the state of Maryland’s first THC-infused non-alcoholic beer. The two Frederick, Maryland-based companies announced today that they intend to make Hop Chronic available to the state’s medical cannabis patients as an alternative to smoking or vaping as early as this summer.Flying Dog CEO Jim Caruso stated, “For people who don’t want to smoke, don’t want to vape, there’s no path of experiencing the therapeutic benefits,” “It feels good to be a part of creating a delicious IPA where people who want to experience cannabis that way can do that.”However, Flying Dog and Green Leaf face a potential regulatory roadblock as the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission has yet to allow companies to produce or sell edible cannabis products.Nevertheless, Caruso stated that he’s optimistic the product will be approved since similar offerings have already received the go ahead in other states, like Colorado, where Ceria, Inc. founder and Blue Moon creator Keith Villa launched a similar product in December. If approved, Flying Dog would join a number of beer manufacturers that have already entered the cannabis space. Large beer companies such as Anheuser-Busch InBev (Tilray), Constellation Brands (Canopy Growth) and Molson Coors (Hexo) have each struck partnerships with Canadian cannabis companies. Other U.S. beer manufacturers, including Heineken-owned Lagunitas and Craft Brew Alliance (31.4 percent owned by A-B InBev), have experimented or explored the possibility of THC- and CBD-infused beverages.Ballast Point Sets Opening Date for Downtown Disney TaproomA year after announcing plans to open a taproom in Anaheim’s downtown Disney district at the Disneyland Resort, San Diego’s Ballast Point’s brewpub has set an opening date of Wednesday, January 16.The Constellation Brands-owned craft brewery said the new taproom will feature a 3-barrel brewing system and offer more than 50 styles of Ballast Point beer across 100 tap lines.Constellation Brands craft and specialty president Ben Dollard said, via a press release. “This new location also gives our passionate brewing and culinary teams the perfect place to test new and inventive offerings, as we welcome longtime Ballast Point fans and introduce new guests to our brand,” The Disney taproom is Ballast Point’s ninth in the U.S.Braxton Brewing Announces $5 Million ExpansionKentucky’s Braxton Brewing Company has embarked on a $5 million expansion that will include the purchase of the building where its brewery is currently situated, as well as the construction of a rooftop bar and the installation of a new canning line.Braxton co-founder and CEO Jake Rouse said the construction of the new 5,000 sq. ft. rooftop bar would cost about $1.5 million. The craft beer maker, which launched in 2015, will also spend approximately $2 million to acquire the Covington, Kentucky, property where the brewery is located, and another $1.5 million to expand production capabilities.According to Rouse, Braxton made about 17,000 barrels of beer in 2018, up from 11,500 in 2017. The company expects to produce upwards of 25,000 barrels in 2019 but will have the capacity to make 30,000 barrels. In late December, Braxton announced the launch of Vive Hard Seltzer. The product will be sold in 12 oz. slim cans, which led the company to invest in a new canning line capable of filling those packages. In addition to the Vive Hard Seltzer line, Braxton recently launched a new year-round New England-style IPA, called Tropic Flare. Four-packs of 12 oz. cans sell for a suggested retail price of $9.99.San Diego Brewers Guild, Lyft Share Most Requested Brewery DestinationsThe San Diego Brewers Guild and Lyft shared their list of most traveled craft brewery destinations of 2018. Season 1, Episode 8 – This week, we’re once again joined by the lovely Denise Ratfield of Pink Boots Society and Stone Brewing Co., who (like the dope lady she is) brought #AllTheBeers. Robert French is also back in the studio with us. We try three varieties of Societe’s “The Bachelor”, learn more about Denise, and learn that Jason simply dominates during “Guess That Brew.” If you have yet to hear about Societe Brewing Company in San Diego, California, well…get in the know! They’re making killer beer in San Diego that’s uncompromising and true to their take on what craft beer should be. Societe Brewing Company – The Bachelor Denise brought three varieties of Societe’s American IPA, The Bachelor, to share with us. These growlers were provided by our good bud, Mike Sardina, Societe’s “Ruler of the Underworld.” Mike is one of the most sincere craft beer geeks we’ve ever met, and he’s a perfect fit over at Societe. The Bachelor is an ever-changing, single hop IPA. The hops in the beer vary from batch to batch, so you can really get the true essence of whatever hop was used in the beer pretty well. The first variant of The Bachelor we’re drinking is made with Mosaic hops. Mosaic hops tend to come off very much like passion fruits, and this beer definitely delivers the fruit, perhaps even all over your face. The second variant of The Bachelor is made with Amarillo hops. Amarillo is a great hop for IPA, especially when combined with Simcoe, so it’s really nice to see it used in The Bachelor as a single hop. The third variant of The Bachelor is made with Citra. [Citra is so hot right now. So hot.] We all love its citrus-like characteristics and it really shines in this beer. Societe makes some of the cleanest beer you’ll ever drink, and Citra in The Bachelor is a match made in beer heaven. Feature: “Guess That Brew!” We’re back for another round of “Guess That Brew.” This time, we’re reading two reviews of two very different but much sought after brews. Jason proves once again that he is the master of this game. Don’t cross this dude—he’ll lay the smack down. Feature: Denise Ratfield and “Unite Pale Ale.” Denise Ratfield has been involved in the brewing industry since 1995 when she worked on the bottling line at Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. She currently works at Stone Brewing Co.’s headquarters as their Brewceptionist. Along with working at Stone, Denise has been an active member of the Pink Boots Societyas the Social Media Committee Chair. She also recently organized the massive brewday that was International Women’s Collaborative Brew Day. Pink Boots Society is comprised of women who work in the beer industry. Their main goal is to empower women in the brewing industry through an open exchange of ideas and scholarships. There are many women working behind the scenes in the beer industry, whether they be brewers, brewery owners, shop owners, or even beer writers. Their voices and advancement in the industry are important. Pink Boots Society is there to help them advance and thrive, and encourage even more women to get involved in the beer industry. Mike Hess Brewing and Pink Boots Society Collaboration Beer – Unite Pale Ale As mentioned earlier, Denise was the event organizer for International Women’s Collaborative Brew Day. The idea was originally brought to Denise and Pink Boots Society by Sophie de Ronde from Brentwood Brewery in the United Kingdom, in collaboration with Project Venus UK (think Pink Boots Society, but in the UK). The thought was to have women in the beer industry from all over the world unite for one day and brew a beer. In this case, it was a pale ale made with Cascade hops—a true classic. A recipe was posted online, and those who participated could tweak the recipe as needed and brew the beer. Over 70 breweries around the world participated. The beer was named “Unite Pale Ale.” The variation of Unite that we are drinking this week was brewed at Mike Hess Brewing Company in San Diego, California, by two team members from Stone Brewing Co. in Escondido, CA, Laura Mirsch (Brewer at Stone Brewing Co.) and Hollie Stephenson (Brewery Supervisor at Stone Brewing Co.). It’s a 4.9% pale ale that’s quite delicious. Latitude 33 and Pink Boots Collaboration Beer Label Denise is all about the Pink Boots Collaborations these days, and her latest is with Latitude 33 Brewing Company out of San Diego, California. Denise and Kevin Buckley (Latitude 33’s Brewmaster and Head of Brewing Operations) made a 5.3% oatmeal pale ale (ah-hem,John…?) with Nugget, Nelson, Southern Cross, and Motueka hops named “Worldly Scholar.” It’s on draft and in bottles, and it’s available RIGHT NOW! Funds raised from the sale of the beer will benefit Pink Boots Society scholarships. Denise will also be pouring this beer at Beervana, a two day celebration of craft beer in New Zealand. Season 1, Episode 4 - This week, a really enjoyable rye IPA from Mike Hess Brewing out of San Diego, California, followed by John Holzer‘s Cantaloupe pale ale named “Jill.” We start off the show this week with a delicious beer from Mike Hess Brewing in San Diego, California, called “Habitus.” It’s an 8.0% ABV IPA made with rye malt, and Sterling and Chinook hops. Overall, a nice spicy rye character comes though, but isn’t overbearing. The unique combination of hops really sets it apart and makes it an very quaffable IPA, even at 8.0% ABV. Mike Hess Brewing – Habitus Feature: Homebrew – John‘s cantaloupe pale ale, “Jill.” John brings us his cantaloupe pale ale made with Meridian, Simcoe and Amarillo hops. Fermented with one pound of cantaloupe, the original idea for the beer was for it to have some big tropical notes, but not be too hoppy, and too high in alcohol. Made in collaboration with David and Adam Gillanders, Jill was brewed in memory of their mother, Jill Marie Thibodeau, who fought a tough battle with cancer. Jill was a fan of craft beer, so David and Adam thought it fitting to make a beer in her memory. Recipe: 10 gallon batch, 82% mash efficiency. 154º mash temp for 40 min, 20 min mash out to 168º. 60 min boil. 64º fermentation temperature. 1.063 OG. Malts: 22 lbs 8 oz 2 Row Malt, 1 lbs US Caramel 15 malt, 12 oz Gambrinus Honey Malt. Hops: 2 oz Meridian Hops at 40 min, 4 oz Meridian Hops at flame-out. Dry hop: 2 oz Simcoe at 7 days, 2 Simcoe oz at 10 days, 2 oz Amarillo at 13 days. Yeast: White Labs WLP051 with 3.2L starter. Cheers, and we’ll see you next week!
